Following Core Meltdown, Reactor One At Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant Explodes - Video

Tyler Durden's picture

Following a report earlier that the Uranium at the Fukushima Power Plant may have melted, we sadly bring you this video of the explosion at Reactor one of the nuclear site.

A before and after picture, showing the loss of Reactor 1

From BBC:

There has been an explosion at a Japanese nuclear power plant that was hit by Friday's devastating earthquake.

Pictures show a blast at the Fukushima plant and initial reports say several workers were injured.

Nuclear expert, Malcolm Grimston told the BBC that nuclear materials may have been able to escape .

And as predicted by Zero Hedge first yesterday, the power plant has just announced that there is indeed a meltdown at the plant.

The core at Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant's No. 1 reactor may be partially melting, the nuclear safety agency said Saturday.

Radioactive substance cesium was detected around the reactor, it said.

Alas, as many may be affected by fallout, we present the wind data for Asia for Saturday:

prevailing westerly winds will take whatever comes out of this caldren of chaos north over Alaska, then Canada, and USA, estimated time of arrival about 2 weeks and will arrive carried by the April showers that bring May flowers. Canadians and Americans should stock up on Iodine as their is no way to stop what is coming.

So far the animated maps I have seen don't really show Alaska at risk unless one is in very SE Alaska or the Aleutians. But there is definately the possibility.

There is something else they either aren't bothering to report or ar hiding from the public is that there are 3 volcanoes erupting in conjunction with the quake. The only place I've seen this reported is one the web.

Volcanoes have reportedly erupted in Japan, Indonesia, and Kamchatka Russia today, presumably due to the massive Japanese earthquake. There have been no reports of damage from the eruptions.

ANY qualified geologists find this strange (3 volcs erupting in conjunction w/quake)?

If not, I'm not concerned either (after all, what does one expect from the 'Ring of Fire' around the Pacific?)

Forget all that BS on that nuclear power plant. Until now, the worst thing is that it looks like about 10.000 people are unaccounted for and might have simply drowned.

Until now, the container is still holding the core. This does not necessarily mean that it stays that way, but until now, the plant is as safe as it could be in this situation.

Handing out the iodine tablets is the right thing to do now IF the containment IS breached - which seems to be still possible.

Around 10,000 people are unaccounted for in the Japanese port of Minamisanriku, reports say, as the estimated death toll from the country's quake and tsunami nears the 1,300 mark.

Update: Radiation outside the containment is at about 1000 microSievert... that's almost nothing. But the risk of a containment breach is still there.

Yes, I'm sure there are people working tirelessly trying to contain the damage, knowing full well that they will die - contrast those heroes with the banker scum who knowingly cause tsunamis of pain and suffering to sweep across the world and do not have a scintilla of remorse, worst yet, they probably laugh about it in their midst.

I'm wondering if this catastrophe means U.S. retail stocks will gap up and take out the highs next week?

Seem to be the pattern, lately.

Or maybe the REIT stocks are next?

Amazing after last week's epic breakdown, these two sectors were unfazed.

Short sellers who piled into these groups must be pulling their hair out.

Bears must get some selling going ASAP.

People in Los Angeles are going nuts over March Madness.

Over $65 million was raised in record time for a total renovation of UCLA's Pauley Pavillion last week.  Local PigMen here who run all the money management firms in Westwood and Century City coughed up the cash.  All of them have billions under management and they all ride the coat tails of Brian Sack.

Hmm, wondering about these questions:

-For the outer casing ... why did the explosion completely destroy the concrete, but the metal frame appears entirely intact?

-If the metal frame is intact, does it seem reasonable to conclude that the inner metal containment is also entirely intact?

Something tells me that the inner metal container has maintained its integrity.

Go back and look at the before and after pictures. The sheet metal and sheet rock left, the structural steel is still there.

A schematic of the reactor building:
http://www.beyondnuclear.org/home/2011/3/12/fukushima-dai-ichi-unit-1-re...

A new problem. Years of spent fuel discharges is stored in a pool on the currently exposed top floor. This requires cooling to prevent release from this pile of irradiated fuel, more radionuclides than what is in the reactor core.

(Note: a hydrogen explosion happens within a specific range of hydrogen concentrations and propogates at the speed of sound. The combustion event is over in microseconds, you see no flames, the sonic shock wave takes out the structure.)
