Follow Egypt's Big Day As Millions Take To The Streets

Tyler Durden's picture

Update: Semi-automatic gunfire now heard in Alexandria.

For Egypt, it is now or never. With millions out on the streets in Cairo and other cities, the Egyptian population will likely not have another chance at such a massive showing of popular expression of anger against President Mubarak. For those who wish to follow today's million man march, can do so at the usual places: the Al Jazeera blog, the video feed below, the Guardian blog, real time mappable tweets, and of course, the video feed below.

Oh, yep they just started teaching that Darwin was wrong in the schools there.. and then hese is some more news:

Regarding the Jan. 17 news story, "Alcohol hits a nerve in Turkey," it's no longer a debate but a sad fact that Turkey's ruling AKP party, with the help of wealthy backers in both the U.S. and the Middle East, has been chipping away at the foundations of a secular republic, one that was founded by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk on the bankrupt and destroyed remains of the Ottoman Empire.

The AKP's carefully orchestrated dismantling of modern Turkey is almost complete, and has also been assisted by the party's rural, lesser educated, committed Muslim base.

Turkey's younger generation, meanwhile, seems to have been brainwashed through years of the AKP's "carrot and stick" tactics, while the country's minorities seem to support any initiative that brings quick financial gains.

Would it be surprising to wake up to an Islamic Republic of Turkey one day soon?

Disoriented and disorganized, Turkey's main opposition parties deserve a lot of blame as well. Years of bickering, power struggles, and the pursuit of outdated strategies, have only helped the AKP and Prime Minister Recep Erdogan with his grand aims.

Meanwhile constitutional changes masquerading as "reforms" are strangling Turkey's freedoms of press, speech, the integrity of the courts, and the capabilities of the armed forces as the protectors of secular Turkey. Everyone who has tried to prevent this dismantling of modern Turkey has been labelled as an enemy by Mr. Erdogan and his supporters. Yet they seem to have forgotten their history; it was his Muslim brothers who stabbed the Ottomans in their backs.

Now that Ankara has its constitutional overhauls in place, it will be easy to legislate and enforce Turkey's backslide, be it with regard to alcohol, or strict adherence to the Islamic way of life.

But we still live in hope that our nation may wake up sooner rather than later.

"Sharia law is incompatible with Democracy. There will not be democracy; the Arabs are intolerant and not ready for it. It is high time the United States mind it's own business- it will see soon enough."

Arabs are not ready for democracy?  This must be like American Blacks were not ready for Civil Rights for through most of the 20th century.  Good thing we had the Jim Crow laws to keep them in their place so that they could get ready.  So in this context America was helping the Egyptians, and other Arab states like Iraq and Jordan by supporting friendly and benevolent dictators.

So they probably just need a little push to help them like the British helped the Indians at Jallianwala Bagh realize that they were not ready for democracy either.  The British were always good with tough love like that.

Peaceful demonstrations do not accomplish a thing. They had over a million demonstrators in Mexico city in 2006 protesting the election fraud and you can see the results today: a civil war disguised as a "war on drugs" that kills dozens of people every single day. Egypt can expect the same.

Nope, you just can't have it both ways. Whatever leadership rises in Egypt...Democracy not compatible with even limited Sharie Law:

Sharia law in Egypt applies only in personal status issues - such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and custody of children. Otherwise the legal system is entirely a secular one, on the model of the French legal system.

Egypt incorporates Islamic law into its constitution by making Islam the official religion of the country and Islamic jurisprudence the principal source of legislation.

Sharia courts and judges, qadis, are run and licensed by the Egyptian Ministry of Justice, not by mosques.

Oh so they are going to give up Sharia law and treat women as equals??

How strange a requirement (not that strange actually)

Many, many democracies have spent most of their existence in inequal standards rather than equal standards.

The US history is clear about that, with various sequences of inequalities, in order to control various populations (including women who were excluded from voting till 1920 or something, so  more time than they were included)

Of course, in spite of all these irregularities, the US has been nothing but a democratic  constitutional republic since the beginning.

Yet all the nascent democracies should start from the very point 200 years old democracies have reached.

It is not that strange because the democracy status is more one of recognition: a country is recognized as a democracy, no matter what.

South Africa under Apartheid was considered a democracy by the US for example.

All these countries wont become democracies. Because there exist no requirement for being a democracy other than co-option.

Quite a lot of people are going to scan every little detail in their behaviour to explain how these countries are not democracies, even though it means excluding their own countries from the status of democracy a few decades earlier. Of course, they will maintain their own country  into the status of democracy. Showing double standards. But who cares? Only others are expected not to show double standards.

Wish they would acknowledge the problem and work that shit through in a healthy way.

FWIW, I'd say that most Americans suffered it as a result of 911 . . . which explains alot of what has followed here.

Let me follow your logic here. The poor Israelis, whose overwhelming majority was born after the end of WWII, and whose civil infrastructure has been largely paid for with German reparation money, cannot be held accountable for their crimes because they vicariously suffer from PTSD caused by Nazis they never met?

Amazing. It is not bombs or radiation or chemical agents that will finish off Israel. It's universal ridicule.

Tue, 02/01/2011 - 13:04 | 923997 Bob

That's right, I'm serious. If you really want to understand it, bring a truly open mind to a conscientiously careful reading of my wiki link on PTSD.

Unfortunately for the Jews, rather than dealing with the trauma in a healthy way (which people with PTSD are incapable of doing for themselves), they obsessed on the horror and drilled the images of their flashbacks into the collective memory. You've seen the pictures of the bodies. If you were a Jew, they would hit a lot deeper. Especially if your PTSD culture had adopted that image as an omnipresent real time threat to be impressed upon its children.

If the kids are not traumatized enough by that alone to develop bonified PTSD of their own, the majority of that remaining group of emotionally vulnerable children are going to develop it as Munchausen Syndrome By Proxy.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%C3%BCnchausen_syndrome_by_proxy

If you give it half a chance, it explains the full situation without demonizing Jews.

I was specially blessed in my understanding by a Jewish ex-wife who induced a proxy syndrome in our child.

It's how people function within cultures over generations.

I don't offer this as a legal defense against accountability for crimes, only as a different and suprisingly robust explanation of the situation.

And the fact that all their neighbors are sworn to their destruction has no bearing?

Tue, 02/01/2011 - 13:29 | 924158 Bob
Bob's picture

I'm glad you asked, since I'm putting my theory together as I post and had moved onto that very issue.

We certainly didn't do them any favors by giving them Israel to heal the wound.  They were not welcome.  While nobody likes that feeling, people with PTSD are especially vulnerable to hostility.  And in this case, the trauma had only been a couple years prior.  It was absolutely fresh.  The hostility further reinfored their PTSD culture.  Not that the other guys were doing a whole lot better.

PTSD produces extreme hypervigilance and hypersensitivity, even flashbacks in response to stimuli that are reminicent of the original trauma.

You can see how this goes.  Of course, their own reactions did not make the situation any easier over time, either.

Look at it now--they've got nukes and still live in terror posing as strength.  It's way different from we Americans who practiced nuclear attack drills in school while the world lived under a real omnipresent possibility of MAD through the Cold War. Not that we haven't been crazy ourselves since 9-11.

I think it works.  I hope I get some Jewish feedback on it.

That's my fantasy as well.  I picture some untraumatized Israelis meeting with reps of all the Arab countries and just working this shit out.  It shouldn't be hard for people who are meaningfully willing to be friends.  Of course, there's a serious question about how emotionally flexible these people--all of them--are.

But if Arabs and Jews couldn't negotiate a deal, I don't know who could.  And I mean that in the good way.

I agree with the exception of an electric train.  The UAW and big oil would never allow Obama to truly promote and enable commuter rail in this country, no matter what we paid him.  Ten lane highways, McMansions, and giant apartment complexes 40 miles from anywhere are our fate.  What I would give to have Houston look like this:

http://johomaps.com/as/hongkong/hkmetro_ch.html

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MTR

Although China can afford it, we can't.  We have POMO commissions to pay, and more than 750 military bases to maintain.

All this, yet no effect on markets. The influence of "easy money" emanates throughout this "crisis". "Fear" is no longer relevant, even in the most contrived view. One would think somebody would come up with a "trigger" by now. So be it, let there be peace and love. Power to the Egyptians!

I think this is really worrying. The issue is who takes power next. Will the peoples sentiment swing away from tolerance towards a more intolrant islamic state? This could be catastrophic in the balance of power and peace in the region. If Mubarak goes alsorts of 'leaders' will come out of the woodwork. Who will be the new Barak. It seems the world is full of them

Has anyone here even pondered to take a look at El-Baradei? A lot of hype around him as a potential leader of the revolution, but no one bothers to think where he's coming from.

http://www.crisisgroup.org/en/about/board/Mohamed%20ElBaradei.aspx

"The Crisis Group raises funds from mainly western governments, charitable foundations, companies and individual donors. In 2006, 40% of its funding came from 22 different governments, 32% from 15 philanthropic organisations, and 28% from individuals and private foundations. Philanthropist George Soros who is chairman of the Open Society Institute is on the Board of Trustees"

Crisis Group Senior Advisers:

Richard Armitage
Former U.S. Deputy Secretary of State

Shlomo Ben-Ami
Former Foreign Minister of Israel

Stanley Fischer
Governor, Bank of Israel

Lord Robertson of Port Ellen
Former Secretary General, NATO

Shimon Peres

Zbigniew Brzezinski

The Muslim Brotherhood is very strong among the junior officer corps of the Army, not so much the Air Force. It will be interesting if the government tries to use air power against the people. My guess is that there are small units of the Army ready with ground to air missles in case that happens. If you want to follow Israel's actions around all this look at debka.com. Granted they are a propaganda shill for elements within Israeli intelligence but you can easily read between the lines. They are shitting bagels right now because the Egyptian Army (remember the MB influence) has opened the border with Gaza and Hamas is freely moving all kinds of weapons into place. The Suez canal is definitely about to be closed with more than one sunken ship.

Saw on local news this morning the claim the Egypt protests are likely to cause increased gas prices and thought "bullshit." Then read on Al Jazeera that Egypt state TV's main message is that protests are harming the economy.

Conclusion: Protests are not machinations of the U.S. government. My thought has been that with QE and other dollar inflation, Egypt is now getting the equivalent of $1.5 billion Zim dollars a year, and the tiny percentage that heretofore trickled down to the people (subsidies, etc.) is being hoarded by the elite. Hence the unrest.

We are an empire not a republic anymore because we have 800 military bases abroad. While at the same time our southern border is wide open. These folks ahte us because we are all in there business. Your enemy is not Islam, your enemy is big govt that is taking your rights away(Patriot Act,Military Comissions Act). This govt are trying to take our right to free speech and to bear arms. Are muzzies taking away our guns? No! Our govt is. The middles east is a cesspool of violence since the days of Joshua. We have enough oil, coal, natural gas to last us for centuries,so we should leave the middle east and let the factions destroy themselves. We should persue a non interventionism policy as we did back in the 19th century.

"The great rule of conduct for us, in regard to foreign nations, is in extending our commercial relations, to have with them as little political connection as possible.Europe has a set of primary interests, which to us have none, or a very remote relation. Hence she must be engaged in frequent controversies the causes of which are essentially foreign to our concerns. Hence, therefore, it must be unwise in us to implicate ourselves, by artificial ties, in the ordinary vicissitudes of her politics, or the ordinary combinations and collisions of her friendships or enmities." Theirs is a revolution of necessity, and an insurrection of profound possibility.

The uprising in Egypt is not simply an act of profound civil resistance, it represents the unthinkable: a symbol of hope in a region often dictated by oppression.

The people of Egypt, with courage and collective heroism, have challenged the great myth - that shallow temptation - which leads us to believe that change is no longer possible.

You say you want a revolution? You can have one.

Up until about a week ago, political analysts would only consider and hypothesize about Egypt’s future in the context of President Hosni Mubarak’s old age and eventual death.

But the people have spoken- they have shouted: “we will no longer by dictated by a tyranny of force.” They have proven in large numbers that ordinary people *can* be active agents of change, and that we are not born into a hopelessly programmed world.

Long ago, the Egyptian government stopped representing the interests of the people. Society may have crumbled, but the spirit of sacrifice and community did not.

Today – as Egyptians set out to march from Tahrir Square in Cairo to the presidential palace – the world will witness a moment of truth – a reversal in the way we think about living.

Their greatest weapon is an unstoppable rhythm of revolutionary spirit. This is not a choice between chaos and order. This is a choice between repression and justice.

They choose dignity; they choose to show ultimate dissatisfaction with the political scandal and corruption that has restrained them for so long.

This is the day that Egypt marches for the world. March on, brothers and sisters: the past is already behind you, and the demands for your chosen destinies await you.

A Statement from an Egyptian Protster at tahrir Square( LIBERATION SQUARE )
