Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs: Iraq War "Based On a Series of Lies"

Washington’s Blog

In his recently published memoir, "Without Hesitation: The Odyssey of an American Warrior," General Hugh Shelton, who served as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1997 to 2001, called the Iraq war "unnecessary" and said that the Bush team went to war "based on a series of lies."

Shelton also said that Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, Deputy Secretary of State Paul Wolfowitz and other Pentagon officials pushed for war in Iraq "almost to the point of insubordination."

This is not some voice from the peanut gallery.

The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs is - by law - the highest ranking military officer in the United States armed forces, and the principal military adviser to the President of the United States. The Chairman outranks all respective heads of each service branch, including the heads of the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines.

Thank you, General Shelton, for confirming what Seymour Hersh and many others have been saying since 2003 (and see this).

What is the difference between this and the current entire financial system. It can be said,

The entire financial system, from banks to brokers is "Based On a Series of Lies."

Corruption from Wall Street to Capital Hill (NYT article on US corruption highest ever) and this gangrene of fraud and lies will bring the entire financial system to its knees.

Tell me something I don't know?!

Just quick anecdote. When Collin Powell was presenting case for Iraq war with vial of anthrax in his hand, after the speech Sergei Lavrov came up to him showing blank sheet paper, saying "this is what we've got on Saddam's Weapons of Mass Destructions"! Nothing!

In my opinion, the war was just about transferring as much money as possible from was left after Clinton term - (budget surplus mainly Social Security) from state (public funds) to private sector!

Sad but true...

So what is the penalty for treason.... and when will Bush, Cheney and others be on trial for murdering Iraq citizens and the unnecessary killing of USA military soldiers?

This is absolutely no news.

Several former members of the precedent administration have already published books in which they admitted they knew what they were telling was not  true.

Once again, your analysis is off. These guys exemplify what the Western world is. They are chasing a buck and they will exploit any venue possible.

Several classes in the Western world when it comes to justice: at one end, people who can be condemned without self-indiction and evidences against them.

At the other end, people who cant be condemned even when their self indiction is confirmed by evidences.

For this last class, it is business sound to exploit their position by making money out of it in every way possible.

From the former administration, you got people making a buck by declaring the war against Iraq and making a buck by writing in a book that they knew they 'misguided' the US People.

A guy who commits a murder is a sound business man when he publishes a book reading how he committed the murder. This is made even easier when the guy knows that the book will not send him to jail.

A crime is only a crime when it is socially determined as being a crime (at least in the Western world)

The US People in general is perfectly aware of this trend and support it. What they dont want is to be part of the other class, the one that can be condemned without evidences and self indiction. They would sever one arm to be part of the class that can never be found guilty no matter what.

There is no news.
