Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff: White House Cabinet Member Suggested Killing an American Service Man to Justify War

George Washington's picture

Washington’s Blog

On Monday, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Hugh Shelton told told Jon Stewart that a Clinton cabinet member proposed letting Saddam kill an American pilot as a pretext for war in Iraq:

And see this.

This might seem, at first glance, like just an odd, one-off suggestion.

However, as reported by the New York Times and other newspapers, George W. Bush also suggested to Tony Blair that a U.S. plane be painted in United Nations colors so that - if Saddam shot it down - it would create a casus belli. As the Times wrote in 2006:

The memo [confirmed by two senior British officials as being authentic] also shows that the president and the prime minister acknowledged that no unconventional weapons had been found inside Iraq. Faced with the possibility of not finding any before the planned invasion, Mr. Bush talked about several ways to provoke a confrontation, including a proposal to paint a United States surveillance plane in the colors of the United Nations in hopes of drawing fire ....

And it's not just the current war in Iraq. As I've previously pointed out, war is always sold to it's people by artificially demonizing the enemy:

Countries need to lie about their enemies in order to demonize them sufficiently so that the people will support the war.

That is why intelligence "failures" - such as the following - are so common:

  • It is also now well-accepted that the Gulf of Tonkin Incident which led to the Vietnam war was a fiction (confirmed here).

And governments from around the world have admitted that - for many years - they have used false flag incidents to sell their people on the wars they wish to launch.

For example:

  • A major with the Nazi SS admitted at the Nuremberg trials that - under orders from the chief of the Gestapo - he and some other Nazi operatives faked attacks on their own people and resources which they blamed on the Poles, to justify the invasion of Poland. Nazi general Franz Halder also testified at the Nuremberg trials that Nazi leader Hermann Goering admitted to setting fire to the German parliament building, and then falsely blaming the communists for the arson
  • The CIA admits that it hired Iranians in the 1950's to pose as Communists and stage bombings in Iran in order to turn the country against its democratically-elected prime minister
  • Israel admits that an Israeli terrorist cell operating in Egypt planted bombs in several buildings, including U.S. diplomatic facilities, then left behind "evidence" implicating the Arabs as the culprits (one of the bombs detonated prematurely, allowing the Egyptians to identify the bombers, and several of the Israelis later confessed) (and see this and this)
  • As admitted by the U.S. government, recently declassified documents show that in the 1960's, the American Joint Chiefs of Staff signed off on a plan to blow up AMERICAN airplanes (using an elaborate plan involving the switching of airplanes), and also to commit terrorist acts on American soil, and then to blame it on the Cubans in order to justify an invasion of Cuba. See the following ABC news report; the official documents; and watch this interview with the former Washington Investigative Producer for ABC's World News Tonight with Peter Jennings. Official State Department documents show that - only nine months before - the head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and other high-level officials discussed blowing up a consulate in the Dominican Republic in order to justify an invasion of that country. (While the Joint Chiefs of Staff pushed as a serious proposal for Operation Northwoods to be carried out, cooler heads fortunately prevailed; President Kennedy or his Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara apparently vetoed the plan)
  • The South African Truth and Reconciliation Council found that, in 1989, the Civil Cooperation Bureau (a covert branch of the South African Defense Force) approached an explosives expert and asked him "to participate in an operation aimed at discrediting the ANC [the African National Congress] by bombing the police vehicle of the investigating officer into the murder incident", thus framing the ANC for the bombing
  • An Algerian diplomat and several officers in the Algerian army admit that, in the 1990s, the Algerian army frequently massacred Algerian civilians and then blamed Islamic militants for the killings (and see this video; and Agence France-Presse, 9/27/2002, French Court Dismisses Algerian Defamation Suit Against Author)
  • According to the Washington Post, Indonesian police admit that the Indonesian military killed American teachers in Papua in 2002 and blamed the murders on a Papuan separatist group in order to get that group listed as a terrorist organization.
  • The well-respected former Indonesian president also admits that the government probably had a role in the Bali bombings
  • As reported by BBC, the New York Times, and Associated Press, Macedonian officials admit that the government murdered 7 innocent immigrants in cold blood and pretended that they were Al Qaeda soldiers attempting to assassinate Macedonian police, in order to join the "war on terror".
  • Former Department of Justice lawyer John Yoo suggested in 2005 that the US should go on the offensive against al-Qaeda, having “our intelligence agencies create a false terrorist organization. It could have its own websites, recruitment centers, training camps, and fundraising operations. It could launch fake terrorist operations and claim credit for real terrorist strikes, helping to sow confusion within al-Qaeda’s ranks, causing operatives to doubt others’ identities and to question the validity of communications.”
  • United Press International reported in June 2005:

U.S. intelligence officers are reporting that some of the insurgents in Iraq are using recent-model Beretta 92 pistols, but the pistols seem to have had their serial numbers erased. The numbers do not appear to have been physically removed; the pistols seem to have come off a production line without any serial numbers. Analysts suggest the lack of serial numbers indicates that the weapons were intended for intelligence operations or terrorist cells with substantial government backing. Analysts speculate that these guns are probably from either Mossad or the CIA. Analysts speculate that agent provocateurs may be using the untraceable weapons even as U.S. authorities use insurgent attacks against civilians as evidence of the illegitimacy of the resistance.

  • Quebec police admitted that, in 2007, thugs carrying rocks to a peaceful protest were actually undercover Quebec police officers
  • At the G20 protests in London in 2009, a British member of parliament saw plain clothes police officers attempting to incite the crowd to violence

There are many other instances of false flag attacks used throughout history proven by the historical evidence. See this, this and this. The above are only some examples of governments admitting to using false flag terror.

11a. Still searching for the specific incident in SA (by the way, for all I know it's true, but I also know what the Afrikaaners were and are up against in SA, so just as likely it's not)  I came across your ZH article at

11. Next the ZH contributor would have you believe the Soviet-back communist ANC accusations that their opponents were trying to set them up as patsies in the terrorist game. How rich. It's a real shame I can't get the link he provides for this to load for some reason. Actually, though, it's more a shame for the ZH contributor, as, left to my own devices, I stumbled upon a Craigslist post that looks an awful lot like talking points, and funnily enough, it's fairly identical with what our ZH contributor has posted. In fact, it is exactly what he has posted here, which is no coincidence, since he wrote the Craigslist post. Why do you suppose that is? Why, ZH contributor, did you feel it necessary to post this garbage at the Sacramento Craigslist? Just curious. You're beginning to look an awful like a political activist of the worst kind. You know, the type that works for George Soros. And believe me, I KNOW who he works for.

10. And that brings us to Operation Northwoods. The ZH contributor brings out the big guns at last. Consider this a nail in the coffin of his credibility. He's done. Any of you still rooting for him can head for the exits now. Game over for this guy. All he has left in his corner are 9-11 Truthers. Shame on Zerohedge for allowing this asshole who calls himself George Washington to post his garbage here.

Operation Northwoods: The Counterfeit

Ref:  "Operation 911: NO SUICIDE PILOTS"
          http://www.Public-Action.com/911/robotplane.html

January 24, 2002 -- In "Operation 911: NO SUICIDE PILOTS" I referred to a plan allegedly hatched by Pentagon brass in the 1960s to commit terrorist acts and use them as a pretext for war with Cuba (see above URL).  The plan was called "Operation Northwoods."

Operation Northwoods was unknown to the American public until May, 2001, when details were released in James Bamford's new book, "Body of Secrets" (Doubleday).  Bamford summarizes:

. .. the plan, which had the written approval of the Chairman and every member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, called for innocent people to be shot on American streets; for boats carrying refugees fleeing Cuba to be sunk on the high seas; for a wave of violent terrorism to be launched in Washington, D.C., Miami, and elsewhere.  People would be framed for bombings they did not commit; planes would be hijacked. Using phony evidence, all of it would be blamed on Castro, thus giving Lemnitzer [Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff] and his cabal the excuse, as well as the public and international backing, they needed to launch their war.  (pg. 82).

The mainstream press gave the book, in particular its Operation Northwoods revelations, lots of publicity.  For example, ABCNews.com published a lengthy review with the author.

http://more.abcnews.go.com/sections/us/dailynews/jointchiefs_010501.html
or:
http://www.Public-Action.com/911/abcnorthwds

It seemed remarkable that ABC was willing to show the US military in such a bad light.  Surely the Waco Holocaust was a more contemporaneous US military scandal, yet ABC continues to cover it up.  I wondered at that.

The reviews were well in circulation, but still fresh when 9-11 hit.  In retrospect, Northwoods seemed like an eery premonition.  I thought the release of the Northwoods revelations were indeed a timely coincidence.  Because the Northwoods scenario seemed to fit the facts of 9-11, many writers cited  Bamford and Northwoods.  I was one of them.

But there is just one problem with Northwoods.  Operation Northwoods was not written by Americans.  Put in other words, Operation Northwoods documents were not written by the Pentagon.  They are counterfeits.

"You can't handle the truth".
Classic line by Jack Nicholson ... in my opinion one of the all time
great movie scenes. But its also applicable to life in the US.

There's a knee-jerk reaction of Americans to rally round the flag against
any peceived threat to the country and its way of life.

Don't you think the Powers that Be are aware of this?
Witness anyone who questions the orgins of 911.
It draws immediate derision from many corners.
Obviously few have an open mind on the subject.
---------

Hey, did you all read about the new Bloomberg poll asking Americans
their thoughts about the deficit and what should be done.
Basically the respone comes down to a 'have ones cake and eat it too' opinion.

As was stated at the top ............. you can't handle the truth.

9. As far as the former Italian pm, an Italian judge, and an Italian counterintel officer opining about NATO-sponsored terrorism, well, let's just say that the best the ZH contributor could do was link to a Wikipedia entry that, for all he knows, was written by an officer in the Lubyanka. It's rubbish and he knows it. To say it's an obscure piece of (dis)information is correct, and one begins to wonder (if one hasn't already) just what this ZH contributor is up to. You see, a person isn't likely to delve too deeply into this subject without good reason, and since virtually everything in his article appears to be anti-Western propaganda, one can be forgiven for suspecting that his purpose is precisely to spread such propaganda.

His second link on the subject of this supposed NATO-controlled terrorism takes you to an excerpt of a book written by one Daniele Ganser. Who is Gansser, one might ask? Well, that would be interesting to know beyond the biographical information available online. By that of course I mean that Ganser might very well work for an organization that specializes in anti-Western propaganda, but of course that's not the type of thing easily discovered, to say the least. What is easily discovered is this:

26 February 2005. See transcription of the 1980 House  Intelligence Committee hearing on Soviet Covert Action (the Forgery Offensive):

http://cryptome.info/cia-FM30-31B.htm

20 Febuary 2005. Cryptome today has made an FOIA request to the Central Intelligence Agency for information on the authenticity or falsity of FM 30-31B.

19 February 2005

See also: http://www.globalsecurity.org/intell/library/congress/1994_cr/s940715-halperin.htm

Excerpt of Congressional Record statement on July 15, 1994, by Senator Strom Thurmond challenging the nomination of Morton Halperin (of Pentagon Papers fame) to a Defense Department position:

CAIB 1/79: "reprints a top secret U.S. army memo on infiltrating and subverting allies--although the Army continues to deny it was an official document.''

[Fact: the Army did more than deny it was 'an official document.' The alleged 'army memo' ['F. M. 30-31B'] was exposed as a KGB forgery. See House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, hearing, 'Soviet Covert Action (The Forgery Offensive),' February 1980, pp. 12, 13 and Appendix: 'CIA Study: Soviet Covert Action and Propaganda,' pp. 66 and 67; 176-185.]

A February 18, 2005, report in the Moscow Times refers to a book, "NATO's Secret Armies: Operation Gladio and Terrorism in Western Europe," by Daniele Ganser [excerpt on FM 30-31B below]. The report states:

Among the "smoking guns" unearthed by Ganser is a Pentagon document, Field Manual FM 30-31B, which details the methodology for launching terrorist attacks in nations that "do not react with sufficient effectiveness" against "communist subversion." Ironically, the manual states that the most dangerous moment comes when leftist groups "renounce the use of force" and embrace the democratic process. It is then that "U.S. army intelligence must have the means of launching special operations which will convince Host Country Governments and public opinion of the reality of the insurgent danger." Naturally, these peace-throttling "special operations must remain strictly secret," the document warns.

A hardcopy of "FM 30-31B, Stability Operations, Intelligence - Special Fields" was among material provided to Cryptome in May 2001 by the US Army Intelligence and Security Command (INSCOM) responding to a Freedom of Information Act request for a dossier entitled "Disinformation Directed Against US, File Number ZF010868W:"

http://cryptome.org/inscom-foia02.htm

Among the material provided is a Memorandum for the Record, dated October 7, 1976, which states, "LTC Harvey has been able to determine, after checking with various Army agencies, that there is no FM 30-31B, and that therefore, the attached document is not authentic."

This is not to say that this dossier and the memorandum are not themselves disinformation nor that there is not some other version of FM 30-31B, authentic or bogus, to which the Ganser book refers. Nor should this diminish the importance of examining claims about Operation Gladio.

Images of the Memorandum for the Record, label and letter to Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos, and the 11-page FM 30-31B (originals poor quality):

http://cryptome.info/fm30-31b/FM30-31B.htm

Now we know that at the very least Ganser is prone to accepting forgeries as authentic and basing his work on them, and at worst....

And we also know that the ZH contributor seems to be a bit of a suspicious character at this point.

8.In the case of the Lavon affair, the ZH contributor sought out and found the singular instance where it is known that Israel conducted a false-flag operation. Given the daily and incessant barrage of anti-Israel sentiment expressed online as well as what I have a hunch are his own beliefs abotu Israel, rest assured that if there were more instances to cite he would have. In any event this one event (which is still murky after all these years) serves his purpose of maligning Israel's closest (only?) ally, the U.S., if only by association, but he takes what he can get.

Here is a statement about the operation that should be given at least some weight in light of the fact that subsequent operations have never been shown to have been undertaken:

"As with Pollard, this (Lavon Affair) was a rogue operation," David Kimche, a former Mossad deputy chief, said. "We knew never to go down that road again."

Doubtless this statement will only enrage the anti-semites who so densely populate ZH and the internet, but disprove it they can't.

7. In the case of the CIA supposedly admitting that it hired Iranians to pose as communists in Iran in the 1950's the LAST thing the ZH contributor would have you do is to consider the source of the accusation, one New York Times reporter named JAMES RISEN.

I have capitalized and bolded the name because the FIRST thing you should do is consider this source. You should also consider the quote from Red Horizons many posts above, the one about Department D. Of course, the ZH contributor wants you to believe only the worst that's said about the U.S. and hopes it will never dawn on you that during the period he references the KGB attempted to kill the Shah, and later it was the KGB which orchestrated the deposing of the Shah, because if you knew that you might have reason to believe that, given those two facts, there were plenty of Iranian communists operating in Iran, and they didn't answer to Langley, but to MOSCOW.

6.Next the ZH contributor devotes a bullet point to talking about Nazi use of false flag attacks. There is no doubt that on this point he is correct that Hitler's National Socialist party did indeed engage in such behavior, most notoriously of course the setting of the Reichstag fire and the lesser-known staging of Polish corpses (they were the previous evening living Polish prisoners when they were murdered by SS troops and dressed in Polish military uniforms) around a Polish radio station to convince the world of the need for the Nazi invasion of Poland to save it from Polish military takeover.

The fact that the NAZI PARTY engaged in such acts isn't in dispute, but equally clear is the reason the ZH contributor brings it up. The object is to equivocate the actions of the Nazi Party with the actions of the United States government. It is an associative technique designed to plant very bad seeds in the minds of readers.

5. Next, the ZH contributor grasps at the straw of assigning motives which were never listed as justifications by the U.S. government for the invasion of Iraq in 1991. The reason for the invasion, of course, was the Iraqi invasion and occupation of Kuwait. Dis the Soviet-backed Ba'ath regime of Saddam Hussein kill babies? Why, yes it did, despite what the ZH contributor wants you to believe. Did Iraq threaten the security of neighbors such as Saudi Arabia? Why, yes, it did, again despite what the ZH contributor would have you believe, and regardless how many dubious sources he cites.

4. Gulf of tonkin--The ZH contributor once again attempts to portray an event from U.S. naval history as something it wasn't. By claiming the incident was "fiction" he would perhaps have you believe that the whole thing was made up out of whole cloth when in fact there was indeed a naval battle which occurred between the Soviet-controlled North Vietnamese navy and U.S. naval forces on August 2, 1964. This fact, taken in context, was justification for the escalation of the conflict which had been ongiong for some time. The aggression of Soviet-backed communist government on that day and for a long period prior assured the inevitability of large-scale conflict at some point. A similar strategy is being pursued by North Korea today. No doubt the ZH contributor would have his readers believe that South Korea was the aggressor in the recent military exchange off the penninsula, as pro-communist reports insist.

3. U.S.S. Maine--The Zerohedge contributor would have you believe that the sinking of the Maine was used by the U.S. government for the purpose of declaring war on Spain when this is not the case. In fact, the link he provides has this to say about the sinking:

The destruction of Maine did not cause the U.S. to declare war on Spain

The ZH contributor has apparently also decided that he knows exactly what caused the Maine's siniking, despite the fact that the link he provided which is intended to show the reader a pattern of the U.S. engaging in nefarious deeds in order to lead the people into war after unjust war says this:

Despite the best efforts of experts and historians in investigating this complex and technical subject, a definitive explanation for the destruction of Maine remains elusive.

Sort of on topic...about corruption at executive level...re assange and the up coming bank documents release...

Why banks are worried about WikiLeaks

Madeleine Heffernan

Published 2:39 PM, 10 Dec 2010 Last update 0:11 AM, 11 Dec 2010

An Australian assisting Julian Assange’s legal team has raised the possibility that WikiLeaks’ next document dump relates to the politics of bank bailouts and ill-gotten bonuses.

Scott Burchill, senior lecturer in international relations at Deakin University in Melbourne, is working alongside the lawyer Geoffrey Robertson QC and the journalist and author John Pilger on Assange’s legal defence.

As speculation intensifies that the next phase of the WikiLeaks saga will involve the release of documents of significance to the global banking market, it has been reported Bank of America has set up a ‘war room’ to defend its reputation.

In recent days, WikiLeaks has increasingly drawn attention to corporate behaviour, with oil and gas giant Shell accused of infiltrating the Nigerian government and the market expecting a massive document-dump on troubled UK energy giant BP.

But the prime suspect of the expected bank leak is Bank of America; its share price fell 3 per cent in a recent trading session when it was pinpointed as a target for the document-leaking site led by Assange, who is currently under arrest.

In the US, Fox Business Network’s Charlie Gasparino detailed Bank of America’s ‘war room’ after outlining concerns the bank’s mortgage creation and purchases of investment bank Merrill Lynch and Countrywide Financial Corporation during the global financial crisis would come under the spotlight.

Dr Burchill, a former political officer at the Department of Foreign Affairs, defines his role as holding the Gillard government to account. As part of his duties to date he has hunted down Swedish translators for Assange’s UK lawyers.

He says the information – to be released this month or in early 2011, and described by Assange as giving “a true and representative insight into how banks behave at the executive level” – could be highly revealing.

He says: “Maybe there are a few people who’ve diverted funds to pay themselves a bonus they’re not entitled to, or there’s a link between politicians on various Senate committees and the way these banks have got a handout.”

Given the hostility Assange and his site has attracted for publishing embarrassing rather than critical information, Dr Burchill says media sites will need to make “moral judgements” regarding what to publish.

“It depends on whether there have been illegalities,” Dr Burchill told Business Spectator.

“I think you can probably make a strong case there’s a public interest argument there.

“But if it had the implications of tipping the financial system back to the precipice, then you’d have to think about that.”

1. It is not surprising that a high-level subordinate of Clinton would make a recommendation such as is claimed by High Shelton, given the fact that Clinton's two trips to the Soviet Union and his activities there indicate his likely recruitment by the KGB. Clinton and his traveling companion Strobe Talbott were treated exceptionally well by top Communist Party functionaries during Clinton's first trip to Moscow, where he led public protests against U.S. efforts to stop Soviet-backed military aggression in Vietnam. Clinton's second trip to the USSR later the same year was to Prague, where he stayed at the home of a Hero of the Revolution. There are other things which point to Clinton being an agent of the Soviet Union, but those who know will understand, as a Russian dissident recently said.

Red Horizons, page 123
excerpt:

Over the years, Service D has collected several hundred thousand examples of letterhead stationery and appropriate signatures from all around the West. Based on direct DIE procurement augmented through exchange with other Warsaw Pact services and with the Yugoslavs and Libyans, the collection now contains stationery and signatures from almost all non-communist chiefs of state, heads of government, ministers, and leading figures in the intelligence services, political parties, newspapers and magazines, private corporations, and even charitable institutions. The Vatican was represented as well. There is also a huge font containing copies of the keys used in the typewriters of these Western institutions at specific time periods. As in an art museum, every new item is carefully checked, assessed, and preserved. The collection is considered a very important intelligence asset, and no expense is spared to update and and complete it with the rarest items available.

These materials are used to create "original" Western documents containing false texts, which are skilfully manipulated for the best effect. In the previous eight years, for instance, Romania´s Disinformation Service had successfully created documents signed by various Western leaders. Each of these documents, touching on various innocuous matters, also contained carefully worded references "confirming" Romania´s independent stance toward Moscow, the genuineness of its approach to the West, its economic and and political difficulties stemming from its independence within the Soviet bloc, and the importance of Western help for Romania to encourage other cracks within the Soviet bloc. Carrying various degrees of classification, such "original documents" were skilfully surfaced in countries other than the ones in which they supposedly originated. They were "forgotten" in a briefcase left in a luxury hotel, presumably by a high-level Western government official; or seen on the desk of a Western official who was actually a Romanian influence agent; or discreetly leaked to a journalist by some Western civil servant who doubled as a DIE agent.

HL Shitckan:

Just to throw a few of your own innane and hollow words back at ya...

"You are ignorant of this subject and that is very obvious. You are perhaps not elegant but you are ignorant. You know nothing substantive.

You are a victim of deception, but know that deception only works on those who seek to be deceived."

This newbie shill... HL Shitckan... sure has his retarded head up his gaped ass about all the Isms of this big bad world, believing all the lies and bullshit he reads on the new-fangled innernetty thingy of his.

The link he posted above is to himself posting on some loser/fascist forum.

He is just making this shit up as he goes along...a bipolar discussion with himself on a keyboard...where he admits that he has no other links to a credible source...

"I wish I could post the original link and title, but I have never known what either is."

So making up a link to yourself on another stupid blog, and then using it to give fleating substance to a post on ZH is the new normal!

Jesus H. Christ... this MORON is something else!

Lots of these old 'commie-haters' left around... pissing on themselves as they bang away on a keyboard and try to make sense of all the lies they so eagerly drank down in a drunken rage during the "Cold War".

Willie:  I think this jerk needs a special WB7 cartoon all his own.

You just have to develop a maniacal crazy scientist laugh as an outlet. Of course, that creates a problem when people start to stare at you and ask those around you if you're feeling well.

Any and all testimony at the Nuremberg monkey trials was tainted and untrustworthy. Hitler attacked Poland when it was found out that the Poles were sytematically purging German people from the Polish Corridor area. Now granted. Maybe he should have stopped after retaking the area, but the situation was entirely complex and cannot be fully understood with the type of history that we are taught in government schools. The Reichstag fire was started by German jewish communist dressed up like brown shirts in order to blame it on Hitler's party. Any such testimony to the contrary abtained at Nuremberg was obtained by torchure and other methods. History as we have been taught it concerning ww2 has been totally completely false in order to make Germany look bad.

The Nuremberg trial was just another Stalin show trial. Almost anything was manufactured by the Soviet NKVD (the Stalin's state security agency). The same NKVD that was responsible for slaughtering and deliberately starving to death over 35 millions Soviet people. These people were the best American allies after the Great Britain.

Back in late 1970s, I went to an university and was living off-campus in a Chicago area heavily populated by Eastern European emigrants who came to America after the WWII. I met endless number of Jews who survived the Holocaust, extermination camps, and even gas-chambers. I always wondered how did they do it?

complexity does'nt fit neatly into the simplicity of mythic exceptionalism.  don't even bring up the german people (including german jews, but all of them were naaaatceees fun to kill see?) vs the nazi party or paper clip or ibm or jpm et al. see, it was fun killin japs and naaaaatceees! just like it was fun killin' slopes 40 yrs ago and just as it's fun! blowing up rag-heads and camel jokeys today.

the national security state is a government w/in a government, co-opted by the corporation. we all know the story, eisenhower, c wright mills, lakoff etc.  someone better than me said something like 'it is because of my unending love for her, that I reserve the right to criticize perpetually' and the man was talking about America.

edit: I believe if memory serves, that was langston hughes.
