Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff: White House Cabinet Member Suggested Killing an American Service Man to Justify War

George Washington's picture

Washington’s Blog

On Monday, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Hugh Shelton told told Jon Stewart that a Clinton cabinet member proposed letting Saddam kill an American pilot as a pretext for war in Iraq:

And see this.

This might seem, at first glance, like just an odd, one-off suggestion.

However, as reported by the New York Times and other newspapers, George W. Bush also suggested to Tony Blair that a U.S. plane be painted in United Nations colors so that - if Saddam shot it down - it would create a casus belli. As the Times wrote in 2006:

The memo [confirmed by two senior British officials as being authentic] also shows that the president and the prime minister acknowledged that no unconventional weapons had been found inside Iraq. Faced with the possibility of not finding any before the planned invasion, Mr. Bush talked about several ways to provoke a confrontation, including a proposal to paint a United States surveillance plane in the colors of the United Nations in hopes of drawing fire ....

And it's not just the current war in Iraq. As I've previously pointed out, war is always sold to it's people by artificially demonizing the enemy:

Countries need to lie about their enemies in order to demonize them sufficiently so that the people will support the war.

That is why intelligence "failures" - such as the following - are so common:

  • It is also now well-accepted that the Gulf of Tonkin Incident which led to the Vietnam war was a fiction (confirmed here).

And governments from around the world have admitted that - for many years - they have used false flag incidents to sell their people on the wars they wish to launch.

For example:

  • A major with the Nazi SS admitted at the Nuremberg trials that - under orders from the chief of the Gestapo - he and some other Nazi operatives faked attacks on their own people and resources which they blamed on the Poles, to justify the invasion of Poland. Nazi general Franz Halder also testified at the Nuremberg trials that Nazi leader Hermann Goering admitted to setting fire to the German parliament building, and then falsely blaming the communists for the arson
  • The CIA admits that it hired Iranians in the 1950's to pose as Communists and stage bombings in Iran in order to turn the country against its democratically-elected prime minister
  • Israel admits that an Israeli terrorist cell operating in Egypt planted bombs in several buildings, including U.S. diplomatic facilities, then left behind "evidence" implicating the Arabs as the culprits (one of the bombs detonated prematurely, allowing the Egyptians to identify the bombers, and several of the Israelis later confessed) (and see this and this)
  • As admitted by the U.S. government, recently declassified documents show that in the 1960's, the American Joint Chiefs of Staff signed off on a plan to blow up AMERICAN airplanes (using an elaborate plan involving the switching of airplanes), and also to commit terrorist acts on American soil, and then to blame it on the Cubans in order to justify an invasion of Cuba. See the following ABC news report; the official documents; and watch this interview with the former Washington Investigative Producer for ABC's World News Tonight with Peter Jennings. Official State Department documents show that - only nine months before - the head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and other high-level officials discussed blowing up a consulate in the Dominican Republic in order to justify an invasion of that country. (While the Joint Chiefs of Staff pushed as a serious proposal for Operation Northwoods to be carried out, cooler heads fortunately prevailed; President Kennedy or his Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara apparently vetoed the plan)
  • The South African Truth and Reconciliation Council found that, in 1989, the Civil Cooperation Bureau (a covert branch of the South African Defense Force) approached an explosives expert and asked him "to participate in an operation aimed at discrediting the ANC [the African National Congress] by bombing the police vehicle of the investigating officer into the murder incident", thus framing the ANC for the bombing
  • An Algerian diplomat and several officers in the Algerian army admit that, in the 1990s, the Algerian army frequently massacred Algerian civilians and then blamed Islamic militants for the killings (and see this video; and Agence France-Presse, 9/27/2002, French Court Dismisses Algerian Defamation Suit Against Author)
  • According to the Washington Post, Indonesian police admit that the Indonesian military killed American teachers in Papua in 2002 and blamed the murders on a Papuan separatist group in order to get that group listed as a terrorist organization.
  • The well-respected former Indonesian president also admits that the government probably had a role in the Bali bombings
  • As reported by BBC, the New York Times, and Associated Press, Macedonian officials admit that the government murdered 7 innocent immigrants in cold blood and pretended that they were Al Qaeda soldiers attempting to assassinate Macedonian police, in order to join the "war on terror".
  • Former Department of Justice lawyer John Yoo suggested in 2005 that the US should go on the offensive against al-Qaeda, having “our intelligence agencies create a false terrorist organization. It could have its own websites, recruitment centers, training camps, and fundraising operations. It could launch fake terrorist operations and claim credit for real terrorist strikes, helping to sow confusion within al-Qaeda’s ranks, causing operatives to doubt others’ identities and to question the validity of communications.”
  • United Press International reported in June 2005:

U.S. intelligence officers are reporting that some of the insurgents in Iraq are using recent-model Beretta 92 pistols, but the pistols seem to have had their serial numbers erased. The numbers do not appear to have been physically removed; the pistols seem to have come off a production line without any serial numbers. Analysts suggest the lack of serial numbers indicates that the weapons were intended for intelligence operations or terrorist cells with substantial government backing. Analysts speculate that these guns are probably from either Mossad or the CIA. Analysts speculate that agent provocateurs may be using the untraceable weapons even as U.S. authorities use insurgent attacks against civilians as evidence of the illegitimacy of the resistance.

  • Quebec police admitted that, in 2007, thugs carrying rocks to a peaceful protest were actually undercover Quebec police officers
  • At the G20 protests in London in 2009, a British member of parliament saw plain clothes police officers attempting to incite the crowd to violence

There are many other instances of false flag attacks used throughout history proven by the historical evidence. See this, this and this. The above are only some examples of governments admitting to using false flag terror.

Protection of property rights is the essence of the Constitution.

The essence of the current US government is a criminal gang of murderers, thieves, and thugs.

I would say 2% is a better allocation of force and coercion.

Gold and silver coin as money is the principal means of protecting those rights.  It forces the government to come up with cold hard cash to finance war and other bad government programs.  How much war would we have if people had to actually pay for it out of pocket?

Bingo!!! you're the first person that I've seen print that. People seem to think that all public services are bad. Don't know about you, but I can't watch the Ranch 24/7. I have to sleep.. hence the need for some body of authority to HELP "watch it when I can't" with at the very least some notion of deterrent.

We have almost TOTAL regulation and a government so pervasive it can pat our children's genitals while being ruled by the most greedy and ruthless. Yet, you think it is necessary? You think it would be worse if we were free and sovereign individuals? Really?

yes, it would be worse. look at failed states world wide. worse. the best armed and most ruthless private citizens would rule us, probably more cruelly than our current masters.

but that is not, imo, the relevant critique of/approach to "libertarianism".  it is: at this point, in what direction should we move?  toward greater government/corporate control or toward greater individual liberty under the u.s. constitution? on that basis the answer is clear.

Damn good to see ya GG.  THE Gold Man isn't saying anything that brings anything but agreement from this 100% disabled American war vet, Airborne-Ranger with 20 years of public service in this instance.  Not just old news, the oldest news, the oldest profession excepted.  Use the ability to speak without getting sent off to count trees for as long as ya can.

Best as always.

All those groups have committed crimes as well. The USA's crimes are no less heinous because those other groups have ALSO committed crimes. I also share no responsibility in the crimes of foreign powers as I do those committed in the name of US citizens with blowback that could effect us. Your argument is fallacious.

useful distinction there, bring.  kind of like why the sins of israel rankle more than those of its opponents: because the u.s. kills for, funds, supports, covers up, lies about those sins and, as u.s. citizens, we are implicated; more so if we are silent.

Thanks, I agree about Israel or other closely allied powers where we supply the majority of the military support. We paid for and made those weapons. To me that's the essential difference. I believe in Sovereignty so therefore I won't tell the Chinese what to do. I can complain about their horrific human rights abuses, but I don't have the same level of responsibility. Unless of course I'm funding China with my purchases of Chinese made goods.

A tangled web the globalized world has woven. Injustice anywhere increases the likelihood of injustice elsewhere. On the plus side, working to clean up local justice can have global effects. Just like the cheesy bumpersticker says.

Where is GG saying that it is ONLY the US that's fucking up?  What GG is saying is that if ya follow the money there is only one place that trail leads ya.  And it sure as hell isn't some remote cave in some desolate location!  Fact remains that this money & blood trail travels through many places before finding a home in the US and perhaps more importantly, with those that financially control us, our friends & allies.  Look to who profits immensely from this churn and you'll find blood soaked hands to go with all that cash.  In this those tragically manipulated folks living in caves, planning unspeakable horror are simply one more variable in the equation of profit generation.

Perhaps you believe that all of this nonsense is nothing more than an unavoidable industrial byproduct of our age.  In this I must conclude from your commentary that this assessment has been earned by the crap issuing forth from what passes as a digital persona from you.  Say what ya want to, as often and as loudly as ya want.  Just remember that you are only giving yourself up as a hopelessly addicted Gerbervore when ya do so like this.

And a careful computer examination of the third & fourth derivative phone & internet logs indicate a clear pathway of association with thousands of such folks throughout public & private service.  Remember, some of Wackyleaks' closest associates were based at MIT and the military.  Better lock up all those folks since everyone that has ever taught or studied at MIT or served in the Army (the guy that allegedly leaked all those cables was a service member after all) is now suspect...  Of course we don't even need to mention the criminal conduct of the New York Times and those who have ever purchased one of their papers.  Providing financial assistance to a terrorist organization is against the law.  Get their subscriber rolls for the past 30-40 years as well while we're at it...  And don't forget the Libertarians, they're for limited government and limiting government involvement in your affairs is BAD .. How else can the government, or its contractors know if your a bad guy or not unless they can crawl all the way up your ass .. and vagina in the case of females?!?!  Look to the TSA for guidance..

I am supposed to skedaddle for the weekend so I'll stop ranting for the moment.  Woulda been nice to have had some training as a lawyer so I could actually build a solid argument.  Alas .. as my Irish gets stoked.

Not just Un-American, but a wantonly criminal in their nature that seeks to undermine the very fabric of our society.  Sounds very much like the fictional Chancellor Sutler.

Ya know Davey, listening to some of these folks gives me the impression they would advocate rigorous youth training & selection programs to re-instill "traditional American values".  Train and select a core of guardians.  Put them all in a special uniform of the TRUE guardians of "the faith".  Silver & black ones since those colors go well together, as in a past rendition of this action ... Not so amazing that this is the very process advocated by Siad Kotb, a founder of the Islamic Brotherhood and guiding light of Ayman Al-Zawahiri and al-Qaeda.  The more things change, the more they stay the same.  Tragic.
