i only listened to the video once, but i didn't hear scahill (one of my favorite current piratical thinkerz) say "your" president and cert. not emphasize it, but i'm not sure, and have closed the window. so, i'm not sure ed didn't "mis-hear" j.s.; anyhow, they got to the bottom of it, @ ed's insistence, at which j.s. agreed with something like, "yeah, i'm an american. he is my president, too." at which point they got back to their REAL differences of thought. yeah, ed went off the "deep end" b/c he thought j.s. In all honesty it is to be noted that the crumbling Ottoman dynasty did inflict genocide in 1915 on the Armenians (1 million killed). But by then carnage in Europe was rampant, commonplace occurrence, which does not excuse its infliction on civilians!
Scheuer said nothing of the sort, and he is anything but naive or Pollyanna-ish with regards to fundamental Islam. His argument is that the US has no business getting involved in something that is not its business, and particularly in matters which it cannot win. Scheuer knows very well that there is a segment of the Islamic world that is anything but peaceful and harmless. He also knows it is a minority, and that it does not serve US interests to make that minority a rallying point for other Moslems who have suffered at the hand of US military actions gone wrong, or who can see that the lion's share of US military action over the last decade has targetted Moslem countries.
I cannot speak for Scheuer, but I believe what he was saying is that sometimes it is best to do nothing. Certainly that position is perfectly acceptable to Obama/Bush and their respective sycophants with regard to harsh totalitarian regimes who attack their own citizens in Burma, China, Zimbabwe, Bahrain, etc.
What is interesting to me is that all of the talking heads who have shown up on TV in the last few weeks who have CIA backgrounds (Bob Baer, Scheuer) are extremely cynical of US efforts in Libya, and expect things to turn out negatively. Baer went so far as to say that the CIA boots on the ground are "contractors operating under the flag of the CIA". He's talking about the likes of Xe.
One of the things I find frustrating on this site is that there are many people who fancy themselves uber-sophisticated and lay all blame for all unpleasantness in the world at the feet of the US in general and the CIA or MIC in particular, as if nobody anywhere else in human history ever had a negative thought. I suspect, or know, that these people are not widely traveled and have absolutely no first hand acquaintance with the Islamic world, especially the fringe elements who either interpret the teachings in the most bizarre manner, or else use the religion as a fallback on which to justify acting out their own ignorance, insecurities or hate. We even get a cadre of people who deny the existence of al Qaeda or else think they are cute by calling it "al CIAda". I suggest they get out of Mom's basement and travel to Waziristan. Let them wear a t-shirt that says "al CIAda". They won't come home. If they prefer their head to remain on their shoulders, let them instead travel to Saudi Arabia and see how welcome their other faith, or no faith, is. When they realize that Saudi Arabia still has a law on its books---and enforces it---that the practice of any religion other than Islam is punishable by death (public beheading), and that the road to Mecca and Medina are lined with signs noting the approach of the "non-Moslem Exit" up ahead before reaching the religious checkpoint, they might begin to realize that many in the Islamic world grow up in an environment where other religions are viewed as so dangerous and vile that the mere practice of one necessitates public beheading. Suddenly the fact that 15 of 19 on 911 came from Saudi Arabia is not so surprising.
Before someone charges me with being a naive fool or tool, or someone who has yet to wake up, I have spent many years in the Islamic world, speak and read Arabic, and have lost friends to "al CIAda" in the Middle East.
I find the naivete of many posters on this site infuriating, especially since these posters exhibit the Downing Effect for sophistication, grossly overestimating their own awareness.
many of us have at least read scheuer's books, and yup, he's got some debatable insight from his experience on the ground. but are his views nuanced and truthful, or does he speak politically - for effect? given his background, i contend that we cannot know, but at least he makes the point - we are there, and they react, just as they have done for a long, long time.
however, he's speaking out of both sides of his mouth by saying that doing nothing is an option, but if there's something big happening, the Company is there...

Perhaps you haven't noticed in your time here that precious few ideas are "tested" as you say. Belief in one's intellectual superiority, sophistication, and absolute grasp of the one and only truth is not only common here, it is probably a requirement. I am far from the first one, even in this thread, to write as such. Hundreds, perhaps thousands of times, posters have spoken in absolutes about everything from the perpetrators of 911 to the lunar landing. Add to that the fact that most of recorded history has been written by the Rothschilds or Bilderbergers, and that al Qaeda is an invention of the CIA, or so many here state with certainty. We even have contributors here who in more words than I will ever use tell anyone who does not agree with them that the one with the alternate view is in denial or too uncomfortable facing the truth. Do these contributors have special insight or access? No. None whatsoever. They pull it out of their ass, and expect the peanut gallery to salute it.
Generally I preface my statements with "mights" and "could be's" and "I suspect", but this time I did not. Perhaps by not doing so I demonstrate arrogance or condescension; so be it. It's nothing unusual on ZH. It also demonstrates frustration. That frustrations stems from having had extensive contact with not only the Middle East and Islam, but al Qaeda, as well as LeT and JI. Like I noted, I have lost friends to one of them, so I get a bit riled when people who clearly know nothing speak in absolutes.
