The Vietnam war started with CIA operatives then military advisors. We funded the South Vietnam army with arms. The CIA created the Gulf of Tonkin incident to get funding for the war in Congress and a step up in US boots on the ground. LBJ thought the war would soon be over. He was wrong. Word is Qaddafi is brokering a deal with the EURO's to keep his son in power after he "leaves".
You're right in general... but your specifics fall short. #1. To begin with, during WWII the Viet Minh (COMMUNISTS) were on OUR side, while the Vichy French (Vietnam's pre-war colonial rulers) SIDED WITH JAPAN. American airmen captured by French authorities, were HANDED OVER TO THE JAPANESE, for EXECUTION. Whereas the Viet Mihn helped smuggle them out, to the CIA. The French helped the Japs SIEZE ALL of Vietnam's rice crop to supply the Jap. war machine... which famine killed ONE MILLION Vietnamese 1944-1945.
#2. After the war was over, President Eisenhower - something of a "bleeding heart liberal" by today's standards - supported independence in Asia & Africa vs the old (Euro) colonial regimes. But the French BLACKMAILED America "SUPPORT OUR DICTATORSHIP control over Algeria & Vietnam... or we will EXPEL NATO from France (effectively ENDING NATO on the Continent, Germany, remember, was split 4 ways, including France & Russia). The USA bowed to France's blackmail, and the French phase of the Vietnam war was on - ONE MILLION MORE Vietnamese killed, as the French used US supplied bombs, weapons, and many former Nazi men & officers (both Wermacht AND SS in the French Foreign Legion) to kill as many Vietnamese "insurgents" as possible. Given some modern supplies by communist China, the Viet Minh made far more of a fight than the racist Frenchies expected, France got their asses kicked OUT of 'Nam.
Enter, stage right, the CIA - which at the time was predominately Yalie lawyers, and MANY CATHOLICS. Bowing to the "us against COMMUNISTS!" conventional wisdom of the French war's propaganda machine, the CIA now started funding & arming... the same CATHOLIC Vietnamese who had backed the LOSING side in the French-Viet Minh war! We Americans infested a CATHOLIC, pro-French DICTATORSHIP, on a 90% Buddhist country, that hated the French as much as the Japanese who together had RAPED the country during 4 years of WWII occupation, and many years of colonial French atrocities before that.
Johnson inherited the mess when JFK (who had shed a misquided tear when CIA stood back and permitted the coup by South Vietnamese officers who could no longer operate under Diem's thuggish brutality) was assassinated. Johnson had NO DELUSIONS that the DESPISED CATHOLIC, American PUPPET DICTATORSHIP regime could survive (by now, the Vietnamese had been OCCUPIED by FOREIGNERS for nearly two hundred years) - but Johnson knew that it was THE KISS OF DEATH in American politics to be portrayed as "SOFT ON COMMUNISM" - much less, have ANOTHER Democratic administration portrayed by Rethuglicans as "HAVING LOST Vietnam to the Commies" as Repubs BLAMED TRUMAN for "losing China." Johnson KNEW the war would NOT be the CAKEWALK his generals & admirals told him (witness the Communist revolution in China) - but if he didn't give in to their demands to INSERT US TROOPS in the war, it would be POLITICAL SUICIDE, and his presidency would be OVER that coming November.
So, yes, LBJ consigned 58,000 American soldiers & troops to be KIA in America's longest war. BUT! STRATEGICALLY, the argument could be made WE WON the war: we ended up ALLYING WITH CHINA, AGAINST the USSR, and Reagan was able to bring about the PEACEFUL COLLAPSE of the Soviet Union. DON'T THINK THAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED, had the Republicans ESCALATED the war RIGHT TO CHINA's BORDER, as Goldwater and MOST REPUBLICANS (like McCain & his father) were advocating!
In a concept familiar to anyone who has read up on General George Washington's command of the Patriot armies during the American revolution, you can LOSE a lot of battles... but still WIN THE WAR.
Under Johnson (and later Nixon) America lost the "battle" of Vietnam... but WON the larger "COLD WAR."
And to speak in cruel military "loss/reward" terms, we lost less men in all of Vietnam war, than the Germans (much less, heavens forbid, Russians) lost in INDIVIDUAL BATTLES of WWII. The Dullesian dogma was "rollback" after Korean War, loss of China trauma. The People’s Daily Online (March 23) reported that China has 50 large-scale projects in Libya. The outbreak of hostilities has halted these projects and resulted in 30,000 Chinese workers being evacuated from Libya. Chinese companies report that they expect to lose hundreds of millions of yuan.
China is relying on Africa, principally Libya, Angola, and Nigeria, for future energy needs. In response to China’s economic engagement with Africa, Washington is engaging the continent military with the US African Command (AFRICOM) created by President George W. Bush in 2007. Forty-nine African countries agreed to participate with Washington in AFRICOM, but Gaddafi refused, thus creating a second reason for Washington to target Libya for takeover.
A third reason for targeting Libya is that Libya and Syria are the only two countries with Mediterranean sea coasts that are not under the control or influence of Washington. Suggestively, protests also have broken out in Syria. Whatever Syrians might think of their government, after watching Iraq’s fate and now Libya’s it is unlikely that Syrians would set themselves up for US military intervention. Both the CIA and Mossad are known to use social networking sites to foment protests and to spread disinformation. These intelligence services are the likely conspirators that the Syrian and Libyan governments blame for the protests.
Caught off guard by protests in Tunisia and Egypt, Washington realized that protests could be used to remove Gaddafi and Assad. The humanitarian excuse for intervening in Libya is not credible considering Washington’s go-ahead to the Saudi military to crush the protests in Bahrain, the home base for the US Fifth Fleet.
If Washington succeeds in overthrowing the Assad government in Syria, Russia would lose its Mediterranean naval base at the Syrian port of Tartus. Thus, Washington has much to gain if it can use the cloak of popular rebellion to eject both China and Russia from the Mediterranean. Rome’s mare nostrum (“our sea”) would become Washington’s mare nostrum.
“Gaddafi must go,” declared Obama. How long before we also hear, “Assad must go?”
The American captive press is at work demonizing both Gaddafi and Assad, an eye doctor who returned to Syria from London to head the government after his father’s death.
The hypocrisy passes unremarked when Obama calls Gaddafi and Assad dictators. Since the beginning of the 21st century, the American president has been a Caesar. Based on nothing more than a Justice Department memo, George W. Bush was declared to be above US statutory law, international law, and the power of Congress as long as he was acting in his role as commander-in-chief in the “war on terror.”
Caesar Obama has done Bush one step better. Caesar Obama has taken the US to war against Libya without even the pretense of asking Congress for authorization. This is an impeachable offense, but an impotent Congress is unable to protect its power. By accepting the claims of executive authority, Congress has acquiesced to Caesarism. Washington’s quest for world hegemony is driving the world toward World War III. China is no less proud than was Japan in the 1930s and is unlikely to submit to being bullied and governed by what China regards as the decadent West. On the fluff side, here we have two women who seem to have convinced themselves that they were hired for their journalistic talents. One of the oddities of gender equality is that the chauvinists of the world can use a woman's ego to manipulate her. Everybody's happy. Women think they are breaking the glass ceiling, network execs put on air what they think is the eye candy that draws viewers. When network execs saw how well this trick worked, they demonstrated how fair minded they are by bringing in an equal number of male bimbos. Like him or not, in today's world Walter Cronkite could not get a job in a network mailroom.
The women also erred by thinking that since they love being on TV so much, everyone else wants as much air time as possible. They failed to realize Scheuer couldn't care less if he's ever on TV again, so he has no reason to play nice. This clip will forever appear on these women's resume, though botox and aerobics might keep them employed another year or two until. I'll go out on a limb, though, and predict neither will spend her declining years on the faculty of the Columbia School of Journalism.
On another matter, the careful observer out there might see that there is a definite schism developing in the country between the CIA and the PTB. From Scheuer to Ray McGovern to Bob Baer we have evidence of a new CIA, tired of being the whipping boy for failed administrations and their preconceived views, and tired of seeing the US go down destructive and costly---financial, political and human---paths. It is beginning to look like one side of the debate is the Executive Branch and Legislative Branch, joined by the banksters, Neocons, AIPAC, MIC and MSM vs. the other side with long suffering taxpayers and real patriots. Interesting times. Another of these Scheuer-type outbursts and I see the big budget cut in Obama's second term as being Scheuer's old employer.

I believe it is demonstrative of a developing rift between the Rothschild (European) wing and the Rockefeller (American) wing of TPTB ... maybe even over whose currency will lose the race to the bottom. The CIA/MI-6 drug-dealing axis is primarily in Rothschild's camp (as is the IMF) while the FRB and DoD are primarily under the control of the oil-based warmongering Rockefeller neocons. The recent dissentions of some regional FRB governors may also hint at a prospective power play.
We can only hope that they start to tear each other apart even as they try to jointly manage their global endgame without losing control.

So let me get this straight. A misogynist "former CIA analyst" by the name of "Scheuer" (Thomas Pynchon - did you make this up?) gets to air his total misconceptions of the Muslim uprisings, none of which the former or current CIA saw coming, wearing a suit, shirt and tie all looking like he just pulled it from the dumpster at the local Holiday Inn. He proceeds to inform the world that this is all about oil, that its all about the egos of the current Democratic and Republican elite and the US foreign policy should rather at large in Alabama cutting the Deficit. He also concludes that by having the Service on the ground in Libya leaves the Adminstration with no other choices but ground troups or declaring defeat. And this total moron gets cheered here for irritating a couple of CNN anchors who at least had the decency to dress for the occassion? WTF?
