French Nuclear Group Warns that Children and Pregnant Mothers Should Protect Themselves from Radiation

George Washington's picture

As Euractiv notes:

The
risks associated with iodine-131 contamination in Europe are no longer
"negligible," according to CRIIRAD, a French research body on
radioactivity. The NGO is advising pregnant women and infants against
"risky behaviour," such as consuming fresh milk or vegetables with large
leaves.

***

The document, published
on 7 April, advises against consuming rainwater and says vulnerable
groups such as children and pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid
consuming vegetables with large leaves, fresh milk and creamy cheese.

The risks related to prolonged contamination among vulnerable groups
of the population can no longer be considered "negligible" and it is
now necessary to avoid "risky behaviour," CRIIRAD claimed.

However, the institute underlines that there is absolutely no need to lock oneself indoors or take iodine tablets.

CRIIRAD says its information note is not limited to the situation in France and is applicable to other European countries, as the level of air contamination is currently the same in Belgium, Germany, Italy and Switzerland, for instance.

***

The institute stresses that there is no risk whatsoever, even for
children, of standing in the rain without protection. But consumption of
rainwater as a primary source of drinking water should be avoided,
particularly among children, it said.

As for tap water,
underground catchments or large rivers should not present any problem.
But the institute suggests that the situation of water from reservoirs
that collect rainwater from one or more watersheds, such as hillside
lakes, should be examined more closely.

As for watering one's
garden with collected rainwater, CRIIRAD advises watering only the
earth and not the leaves of vegetables, as absorption is faster and
more significant on leaf surfaces than through roots.

***

Spinach, salads, cabbage and other vegetables with large surface areas
are among those food products that are particularly sensitive to
iodine-131 contamination, if they are cultivated outside and exposed to
rainwater. Washing vegetables does not help, as iodine-131 is quickly
metabolised by the plants, CRIIRAD notes.

Fresh milk and creamy
cheeses, as well as meat from cattle that have been outside eating
grass, are categorised as foods that may have been indirectly
contaminated and must also be monitored. Contamination of milk and
cheese from goats and sheep may be of a greater magnitude than that of
produce from cows.

CRIIRAD appears to count credible scientists among its ranks, including director Bruno Chareyron
- who holds an engineering degree in Energy and Nuclear Technology and
postgraduate degrees in Nuclear Engineering and Particle Physics.

The Euractiv article notes that radiation levels are much higher in the U.S. than in France:

Data
for the west coast of the United States, which received the Fukushima
radioactive fallout 6-10 days before France, reveals that levels of
radioactive iodine-131 concentration are 8-10 times higher there, the
institute says.

***

Radioactive iodine-131 values
measured by the French Institute for Radiological Protection and
Nuclear Safety (IRSN) in recent days show the following, varying levels
of contamination: 0,08 Bq/kg in salad, spinach and leeks in
Aix-en-Provence, 0,17 Bq per litre in milk in Lourdes and 2,1 Bq per
litre in goats milk in Clansayes.

(The French use a comma instead of a period as a decimal point).

0.17 becquerels per liter equals 4.59 picocuries per liter. But cesium levels of 19 picocuries per liter of radioactive cesium plus 18 picocuries per liter of radioactive iodine have been found in milk from Hilo, Hawaii (this is the official EPA data):

Powered by Socrata

And see this, this and this.

It is not surprising that radiation levels are higher in the U.S. than in Europe. As Canada's Simon Fraser University notes:

The jet stream is carrying the radiation from Japan to North America.
Most of the radioactivity disperses in the atmosphere and falls over the
Pacific Ocean on its way over, but some of it has now reached the west
coast, falling down with rain, and mixing with seawater. It’s also
accumulating in seaweed.

As I noted on March 12th:

The jet stream passes right over Japan. The jet stream was noticed in the 1920's by a Japanese meteorologist near Mount Fuji ... If radioactivity got blown by surface winds up into the jet stream, it could spread widely.

So
should American children and pregnant mothers also protect themselves
from exposure to radiation by avoiding drinking rainwater and eating
certain foods?

I don't know. Each person must make their own decisions.

GEORGE, I saw your comment on your previous article.  CRIIRAD has scientists with credentials, you can certainly check for yourself if you care to send them a mail.  They are often on the media, whenever the media care to inform the population.

There will be additional documents on there special dossier on Japan, with details and recommandations for the population which you have summarized in your article above.

I appreciate you're editing this article as it is likely that the US is exposed to more severe contamination and that vulnerable groups of population must be protected.   CRIIRAD also explains why it is NOT GOOD to stay within closed doors and provide many detailed information  easy to understand by the general population.

Thanks George for this, again, excellent article.

GEORGE....THANK YOU !  IT IS URGENT TO PROTECT CHILDREN, INFANT AND EXPECTING WOMEN.....This has been advised for the population in Europe, but Cesium 131 is probably Higher in the US, though it may be in trivial quantity, what actyally counts is the length of time over which contamination is being spread over....it is likely to continue.

Criirad warns on this and regularly updates its research with whatever data authorities are willing to give......

Short summary with data and table why Fukushima moved into 7 and how 10% of Chernobyl has been calculated. Actually, Cs-137 with 30 years half life is has been already leaked at amounts =20% of Chernobyl total. And its reactor 2 which has been and still is responsible.

GW, did you see this? Homeland Security is ON IT. http://homelandsecuritynewswire.com/us-military-robot-help-detect-radiation-fukushima

I'm not sure whether it is creepier that Homeland Security already had robots to withstand very high radiation or that Homeland Security is going to Japan... to secure the homeland?

@DTaggart.

Thanks for those links. The final photo in the drone series had a little warning for us all !

"because it is the Western hemisphere's most contaminated nuclear site with 53 million gallons (200 million liters) of radioactive waste stored in aging tanks. With billions of dollars a year invested in cleanup,"

1/- Fukushima will out do the 200 million lts by a mile and run off is NOT contained and going into the sea and food chain. Further they have no plan what to do with the highly radioactive water or materials that have been spread

2/- Biilions for that US clean up can be converted to Trillions with Fukushima and the time factor extended.

Where is the EPA and correct management in all this??? Not a frigging peep yet if I drop some oil into a water way I'm fined beyond my ability to pay.

Is the radiation making these photographs fuzzy? It is impossible to make out the damage, this is anoying. I belive there will be a graveyard of these drones as they become more radiactive with every flyby.

If those drone pics are all the Army got for it's money then Honeywell suckered 'em again. Off the shelf civilian technology has that beat all to pieces.

Video mount is stabilized, flight is stablized, anti-collision sensors and ready to mount low light/starlight, infrared, HD video and HD still photography packages all ready to go.  Honeywell should be ashamed.

why aren't we getting weekly updates from Chu on this...lay out all the data, test the spinach in Soq Valley, test the milk and cheese in Cali...let us freaking know the risks, as assessed by scientists dispassionately looking at this long before it hit US shores...

II swear they are betting telling us it is bad and not to eat it, people that respect the science will do so, and Tea Partiers will up their intake because the govt told them not too, the spinach farmers will do fine and....

All decisions made in a vacuum - from economic theories to nuclear power, are flawed.  The more logical and sound they appear, they're just that much more vulnerable to some omission.  Omission as in reality.

Why can't spent fuel rods be loaded onto rockets and fired directly at the sun. Once inside the orbit of Venus the gravity would pull the rockets in. It wouldn't even take complicated calculations - more like hitting the broad side of a barn from 50 feet with a slingshot.

We CAN create a reliable, safe spent fuel transportation system, and do exactly that.

But instead humanity spends it's energy on more trival (but fun!) things like TV, partying, fighting, and hording precious metals.

Besides, storing radioactive fuel on earth isn't really working anyways.

We could always carry out a disinformation psyops public perceptions modification campaign to convince the unwanted 96% of humanity as well as any other non-believers in the Way of the Illuminati that radioactive waste is more valuable in times of distress great uncertainty and more than passably acceptable and in fact chicque anywhere in any culture of the world as collectibles, fiat money hard asset surrogates and health food additives.

Good work George - thank you. In addition to airborne radioactive particles, one needs to pay attention to the Japan current and what it is carrying across the Gulf of Alaska and down the West coast of Canada and the US. Seafood from the West coast, especially the shellfish and farmed species like Salmon, are particularly vulnerable not only to dieoff but among those that are harvested before dying to being concentrators of ocean-borne radioactivity. Shellfish are especially likely to concentrate radioactivity. I'm afraid the West coast seafood industry may be at an end for many decades to come.

George, this is your place to keep hammering this drum. I would also begin to inquire as to what the US is doing to safe guard there spent fuel. It seems to me our situation here in the US could be every bit of a disaster waiting to happen as has already happened in Japan. Yet I hear absolutely dead silence from the regulators. Why?
