Full World Cup Spread
For the soccer fans out there, attached is a World Cup calendar by Marca.com which provides an instant view of every day, match, team, group and stadium. By far the best one stop shop of catching up with everything happening during the tournament. And with that, there is only two hours left until the US-England game...and many, many BP halftime commercials.

My bloody Limey buddy will appreciate this.
Typo in that first sentence Tyler. You wrote soccer fans; plural. I think that overstates the audience for this mind-numbingly boring sport. But who am I to talk about overstatements, I just called it a "sport."
Exactly, we have 4 sports here in the US (HOCKEY, Football, Baseball, Basketball). It's been that way since middle school. The boys pick one of the 4 sports, and the girls play soccer.
And the assholes play lacrosse.
Weird that.....because in the UK, the girls play Baseball, basketball and hockey while the boys play football, more or less...
Interesting.
Now grow up.
As European who lived in US for 12 years, I can appreciate American football and understand why it's more popular than soccer. But baseball??? Jesus, the most boring, slowest and useless game on planet earth. The only game where broadcaster has to have great talent to keep people interested.
unless of course US team gets us some respect this year... which they could they're holding their own vs england.
baseball isn't a sport it is a past time.
as far as the audience for this "mind-numbing" sport:World Cup Fever: Internet Has Busiest News Day as Tabulated by Akamai

Football = foot + ball.
"American football" is just Rugby.
I believe ZH is in danger of becoming "this guy".

(One of the funniest things I've read in a while)
Soccer
*cringe*
Football good man, football ...
Ah yes. Quaint. I believe "Football" is what they call it in our 51st state -- an island province to the east.
It still beats a bunch roided guys who try to ass fuck one another; or what the colonies to the west call; football.
http://www.motifake.com/image/demotivational-poster/0904/whining-demotiv...
(All in good fun, CB -- I'll be watching the games...)
Hey man, always in good fun. No hard feeling or anything like that. I also watch your football, so there is that.
Are you watching football, or are you watching guys assfuck each other?
Your two posts, ten minutes apart, have muddled the matter.
Please clarify.
Only the Super Bowl game.
lol @ nfl fans junking you even though you speak da truf
cheeky bastard...why the use of the st. andrews cross flag for the english team and not the union jack...what's the difference and when are they used...thanks in advance
greyghost
Official reason: precisely because that's the english "national" team, not the british team.
Real reason: because they wouldn't have a chance playing with just a single national team like everyone else, so they play with 4 (still not having a chance).
Im not English ya dumb foocking twat <------ see what I just did there.
Seriously; Europe is not a country and not all Europeans are by association English. Got that or do I need to send you a pdf Atlas.
Ghost..its the St. George you`re looking for me old mate. Red cross on white background.
1.1 FFS
The Union Jack is a composite flag of the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland). When taking part in the Olympic Games or World Wars, this is the flag we use. However, in really important events, like the Football World Cup, the four nations compete individually, and that is when the English unfurl the St. George's cross. The other Home Nations also have their own flags, although you would be unlikely to spot one at South Africa 2010.
i stand corrected on the St. George's cross...thank you for the civil answer sabremesh and freebird
Its easier to draw on your face...
Tried to like soccer but just couldn't. But then most pro sports turn me off; too corporate. Are any world cup teams wearing giant AIG or BP ads on their chest?
I'm a gonna watch. My opinion on the matter is whoever wins the other will default first! :p
I wonder if we'll see some BP flags in the limey end of the ground......
To the average England fan (not to be called British which includes, much to their chagrin, the Scots, Welsh and Northern Irish, who to a man will be cheering for the US of A) BP is something bees do after a lot of beer...
Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha! Love it. The loser has the right to default on its sovereign debt first.
Problem, whoever defaults first wins. They get the kazillion dollar bailout. He who defaults last loses. No bailout money left. The winner of the World Cup is screwed.
Fucking tie. We are both doomed! :)
hey RetardoM, how about u take some of the Xanax that your doc gave you recently...your posts are beginning to hijack the hell out of this board and the problem appears to be that your IQ is about equal to that of a dead animal.
I'll try to answer. Yea, I really don't like pro-sports because like you say "too corporate", that too turns me off.
But I've lived in Germany since 2004 (and was here in 2002 as well), and I've really grown to love Fußball.
Yes, it is also corporate, but it is more like when I was at UMich going to see Ohio State come up to play or that faggot leprechaun prancing on the field when we kicked Notre Dame's ass. This is certainly more of a raw feeling and atmosphere that you get only with college sports. The Pros just cannot compete with that, they've already lost it, they're "too professional". If you know what I mean.
It's not just the game, but the whole atmosphere that goes along with it.
But I still do love my Mets!
LETS GO METS
enjoy the $12 hot dog & beer at Shciti Field ;) great point btw, the WC is only sporting event i remain attached to with exactly the reason you said...and yes, the Big Blue definitely had the same energy. think it has something to do with that stadium being built into a hill, felt like you were on the precipice looking down into the earth (much different experience that knowing you were several stories above ground level).
Lol, not sure when I will get a chance to come back to the US and enjoy a $12 brat and a bier at Shciti field! I can get that here for about 4 euro.
But as a Dortmund BVB fan now living in the east, in Jena, I need to trade my BVB scarf in for a Carl Zeiss scarf if I don't want to be beat up on the street. Carl Zeiss is not only the local football club but also one of the leading optics companies in the world servicing NASA and the like.
Cheeky Bastard
I thought it was " footie".
Thats chav talk son; and there will be none of that here.
it soothes my soul to see the delusional public embrace the world cup. while the united states morphs into a fascist / kleptocratic society, the public parties on. good stuff. richard russell's vision that america will be unrecognizable by the end of the year will be fulfilled.
It's good to know though that even in South Africa multi colored clown wigs are a fashion statement of craziness around the world.
Football is all about fascism and stealing. How many victories were stolen?
Check the past of the countries with the most stars (Brazil, Argentina, Germany, Italy)
What does it spell to you?
BANZAI7 WORLD CUP UPDATE:
http://williambanzai7.blogspot.com/2010/06/world-cup-update.html
U.S. 'Soccer' = oxymoron. A complete farce of a joke. U.S. 'soccer' is to football what the IS/LM unholy trinity is to the General Theory.
I agree with your impeccable math, UpShotKnotHoleGrable.
Problem is, I have been told by my rabidly fanatical soccer fan kids, that the U.S. was the first to qualify for the WC. They beat Spain, which was the #1 ranked soccer team at the time. How does that fit into your perfect little mathematical formula? If your math is right, this could never have happened. Go back and do a proof of your math. Einstein did. Made numerous changes to his theory of relativity until the math worked perfectly.
pure talent.

my other bike is your M O M.
Though I can't bet on the damn site(illegal in the US) it's still pretty cool to watch the "action" at www.betfair.com ....currently....a Fiver will get you 33 quid if USA pulls an upset....USA USA USA USA USA!
What is illegal? Betting on a football game outcome?
Come on USA - beat those thug Englishmen! :-)
I would like to note that a 15-yard pass in the NFL is somewhat of a celebrated rarity, it's done a hundred times a real football match and no one blinks an eye.
Just saying!
I would like to note that a 15-yard pass in the NFL is somewhat of a celebrated rarity,
L the R has been watching too many Bears games
Stephen Colbert hosted a soccer debate the other night (starts around 2:50)...
So the local ABC stations aren't hyping this game. I've got a www.flavorwaveturbo.com paid advert on right now. Sheesh.
SPECIAL HALF TIME MESSAGE FROM THE GULF:

Why don't they put all the insolvent countries on one side of the bracket. Then they can battle for order of sovereign default or currency collpase. Now that would be worth watching! Winner gets bailed out the rest fail!
That calendar is awesome.
Engerland Engerland Engerland.
:)
The calendar looks like a pack of birth control pills.
A new sport will soon be coming to the US - storming gated communities...
Fix It Again Timmy
Right, Poor people, especially minorities, ONLY destroy their own communities.
How did South Africa manage to control their extraordinary amount of rapists?
Wow that ball just spilled past Greene. Too soon?
Relative to the BP Macondo blowout well in the GOM, the max estimate of leakage is 3.3 mmbbls if the max 40,000bbl/d flow rate is correct and relief well is completed in August. Please note that in 1979 Mexico's Ixtoc well leaked 3.3 mmbbls over 290 days. After 3 years the GOM marine/wildlife completely recovered according to Government studies. The impact from the BP Macondo well will likely be less since the oil is being treated with dispersements at the wellhead (1.5 times as much dispersements as the oil flow) and on the surface. The Ixtoc oil was not treated with any dispersements since they were not available at the time. The media never mentions the 1979 Mexican blowout and the fact that no significant harm was done to the environment. However, this information will undoubtly be front and center when BP is sued in court.
Environmental laws are much, much different in the US than in Mexico. Plus my understanding is that the Mexico leak was drilled by a Ipmex which is owned by the Mexico gov't.
World Cup and the stock market! Interesting!

This is really funny regarding the BP oil spill.

Did England's keeper have oil on his gloves?
English keepers are the new Scottish keepers
Thank God I'm not that English keeper. This isn't as bad as what happened in 1996 in US vs. Colombia after Escobar's own-goal. But if the US's single brilliant shot in the 64th minute hadn't hit the post, tho, uh-oh.
On the positive side for the Brits, if the keepers were switched England would have won 4-0.
As an aside, I recommend CAPTCHA be disabled on any future World Cup threads. Math is too much to ask at this point. Burp.

I can only assume this was posted to incense England fans. Maradona may have been a genius at times, but he remains a cheating s.o.b. I see your appreciation of the finer points of the game are up there with your many other delusions...
Hand of God? Get over it already. He did score the goal of the century against England at the 1986 World Cup:
Leo we all know the greatest player of all time is Pele!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kq4S31oFHEA
Thank you WBB and yes of course.
Zinedine Zidane
Awesome player.
Thanks.
cb, ever see the film where the cameras & sound fix on zizou for an entire match? can't remember the name of it, but a subtly brilliant piece of work. almost meditative actually.
No doubt, Pele was the greatest soccer player ever. Hard to see how anyone will ever achieve his greatness. The only problem I had viewing your clip was listening to Eminem and Elton John. Here is a better one:
I see we are not going to be friends, Leo. You appear to lack principles. Almost as disappointing as Maradona himself. Let us hope you do not become a cartoon version of yourself too...
Well, I will admit it's sad to see what happened to Maradona. I feel the same way about Mike Tyson, who at his best was arguably the greatest heavyweight ever. Sad to see these superstar athletes go downhill.
I feel the same way about Mike Tyson, who at his best was arguably the greatest heavyweight ever.
Overstatement of the year.
Yeah Leo if we ever hear stories of you with trannies and cocaine, we'll make sure to get you an intervention right quick! :)
Thats impressive. Real talent.

**ck soccer or football; the most important news is that Sarah Palin's breasts are real and she hasn't had a breast implant recently. Beat that football/soccer. Everything about that game is fake, unlike Palin's breasts. The only real sport is what is played in 'merica; everything else is played by girly men. And when we win something we are crowned as the world champions even if no other country is participating in that competition. Match that futball.

"And when we win something we are crowned as the world champions even if no other country is participating in that competition"
Truer words...
If soccer had instant replay, Maradonna would be just another talented coke fiend.
The World Cup is a nett positive for the mission.
Messi has been messy (He's from Barcelona)
Watching Messi's wizardry in creating chances yesterday is why I have been a die-hard World Cup fan for many years
I kid
