Further Proof of Ongoing Nuclear Chain Reactions at Fukushima: Metallic Taste In the Mouth?

George Washington's picture

Washington’s Blog

The Russian scientists and firefighters who fought the Chernobyl fire reported a "metallic taste" in their mouth. That taste was from radioactive iodine. (It is well known that all iodine has a metallic taste.)

For example, Colonel Grebeniouk - who led the Russian troops in charge of controlling the situation - said:

There was a metallic taste in our mouths, an acidity. They say radiation has no taste. It was only later we realized it was the taste of radioactive iodine.

There is substantial evidence of ongoing nuclear chain reactions. Another piece of evidence - as pointed out by nuclear expert Arnie Gundersen - is that there are widespread anecdotal reports of people in Japan and the West Coast of the United States reporting a metallic taste in their mouths:

Hot Particles From Japan to Seattle Virtually Undetectable when Inhaled or Swallowed from Fairewinds Associates on Vimeo.

Note 1: Iodine 131 decays to xenon 131, a non-radioactive form of xenon. Therefore, it is unlikely that a non-radioactive form of iodine would be in the air.

Note 2: There are, of course, other sources of "metallic tastes".

I've heard of the metallic taste before, and not just from iodine.  I think that taste comes from ionizing radiation knocking loose electrons in the mouth.  Metals are also a good source of electrons.  The crew of the Enola Gay tasted lead even though they never flew through the mushroom cloud.  Maybe you could taste the radiation from a "hot particle" on the tongue.  Don't know.

if you put a  AA battery on your tongue, and touch the neg. end with a butter knife, that will pretty much duplicate the sensation, I was having, @ camp pendleton a month ago, during the day, for about a week.

This kind of misleading information doesn't belong on ZH. Implying people on the West Coast are tasting I 131 from Japan is BS of the worst scare and fearmongering. The real George Washington was supposedly more careful to guard the truth. Let's run the numbers:

I 131 half life = 8 hours

great circle distance of Tokyo to Seattle = 4792 miles

Assume a constant, 60 mph wind blowing directly from Japan to Seattle, WA,

4792/60 = 79.86 hours of transit and decay

79.86 / 8 = 9.98 cycles of half-life

All I 131 leaving Japan and flying on the wind to Seattle will be decayed by 1/2, ten consecutive times:

1, .5, .25, .125, .0625, .03125, .015625, .0078125, .0039062, .0019531, .0009765.|||

That rounds off to a low side of 1/1000 of the original gaseous particle's radioactivity. YMMV.

the real problem is the leaking continues.  therefore the contamination spreads.  i had the metallic taste real bad for 3 days here in the northeast a few weeks after the incident.  of late the taste comes and goes, but it has been weaker.  so either my tongue is tired of detecting it, the levels really are lower or i have become so used to it that the taste has diminished.

any way you slice this, it comes up rotten.  this accident will outlive us.  watch as  birth rates decline during this year and cancers increase in the years to come.

not freakin good.

What information are you using to "assume a constant, 60 mph wind"!!!!

There is something called the JET STREAM....  depending on the pressure gradients etc...  that thing can rip at WELL OVER 200 MPH!!!   This will give you a nice visual, (having taken my share of flights to Tokyo).

 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Greatcircle_Jetstream_routes.svg

You should also take a few moments of your time and understand how air emission modeling works, that is a straight forward Google search.. It has come a long ways since the days of using "main frame" dos, topo maps, and manually entering the met data (did my share of that shit early in my career)!!!!

My grandmother used to tell me to "try to keep you words soft and sweet, because you may have to eat them"... (a lesson this post shows at my advanced age I still haven't learned, but I am trying... lolol)

Your statement about GW misleading people suggests that perhaps you might be well advised to ask questions/do a little leg work before making such critical statements.

GW articles have been fairly accurate to date, his sources are cited.

You know, one of the nice things about ZH is you can always go back and edit your comments.

But then again, if you are a "shill" for the Nuclear Industry you might enjoy reading your own Industry News on this cluster fuck.

You are so right.....I don't even think any reactors melted down.  There are certainly no radioactive particles on the US west coast that might cause a metallic taste....that's just crazy talk! GW, thanks for the link to the chart on the radioactive density of seawater around unit 2.  Is that TEPCO data, it must be... but I could not find it on their "data" web site, wonder were the writer from the Daily Kos is getting the raw data from?  TEPCO has to be measuring this at other points on site, it would be interesting to see the rest of the data...

The I-131 levels are disturbing....  If what they say is true (it is under-control/stable AND NOT CRITICAL or going critical sometimes), it should be rolling off faster than those charts indicate.

I wonder why they released this data information?

OH well.  It looks like we learned our lesson about nuclear power.  so far it has not been an expensive lesson.  We have been lucky, considering what could have happened and what could still happen.

Or did anybody learn a lesson?

Try having a stainless steel cap on your front upper tooth.  Talk about tasting metal!  Electric shocks from forks, spoons and anything metallic that came in contact.  Still remember that sensation and taste and it's been over 40 years.

I'm in the CA Mojave Desert and did taste metallic substance in the air about a month ago, but nothing like that damned tooth.  A few of my employees commented on the taste also.

However, back when atomic testing was going on back in the sixties, we were all pretty well dosed.  All it's done so far is to make us slow and fat.  Though our kids seem to have become, largely, imbecilic...can't keep their pants above their ass crack, can't wear a hat straightwards, have never had to walk five miles to find a phone (let alone without a water bottle at hand), etc.
