When I lived, briefly, in PA, the "fishermen" near the sprawl of Allentown / Bethlehem / Easton were lined up almost shoulder to shoulder, hauling out trout that were raised in ponds in the western part of the state. wondering if you know about the maroon-snowmass wilderness elk herds? one of the largest in north america very stressed, but thought i read it was attributable to the fair winter's of the last couple of decades, less snow. not making them tough enough anymore. Colorado Wildlife Dept. doesn't know what to do. probably not good eating either. the bear population is exploding in colorado as well. the state is really pushing for a lot more kill licenses this kill season. not sure that will be the answer in the end.

I'm not familiar with them, but now that you brought it to my attention I should read up on it. On the face of it, it would seem to me that easy winters should benefit them. Wildlife populations take advantage of good conditions, such as your bears. Wildlife management is difficult because we are often lacking sufficient funds to have the neccessary surveys and field research done. There are the usual conflicting interests between logging, mining, tourism, environmental groups, and hunters. Often the science takes a back seat to the politics. I don't know. Going after the bears seems like a desperate easy strategy to fix a complex ecological issue. But then again, I'm biased.
We've been recommended a lot of things on this site...but this is a first.

I agree with your bleak outlook. It may take a crushing firefight to provide motivation, but people will turn in their guns. None of them have had paper targets or the animals they shoot at shoot back with superior ability and firepower. No one can predict how they will act or anyone will react when facing "the elephant", but usually the loud talkers are the first ones to give into the flight part of fight or flight or flee as it were.
There is nothing special or exceptional about today's Americans that would see them risk their lives for ideological beliefs. If that were true we would have seen firm believers go through a meat grinder already.
