Gamma Radiation In Fukushima-Downwind Ibaraki Disclosed, 30 Times Above Normal
For all who have been looking for realtime radiation data from Japan, you are in luck. Or maybe not, as the data unfortunately indicates nothing good. The System for Prediction of Environment Emergency Dose Information (SPEEDI) releases gamma radiation data online. The site is jittery and apparently not suited for major traffic which is why we represent several screen captures of the data. While it is not surprising that according to the website both Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures are entirely "Under Survey" as it makes sense that the government does not want to generate panic, SPEEDI has disclosed some tell-tale data about cities in Ibaraki prefecture, which is just a hundred or so miles north of Tokyo, and is just south of the ill-fated Fukushima prefecture. And the data is stunning: based on a N, NE and NNE wind direction (where it originates), meaning all coming from Fukushima, with a normal reading in the 80 nGy/h range, the city of Kounosu Naka is at 3,024, Kadobe Naka is at 2,416, Isobe Hitachioota is at 1,213 and many others are in the mid to upper triple digit range! Again, this is based on wind coming out of Fukushima and ultimately headed toward the capital. Indicatively, normal terrestrial plus cosmic gamma radiation is about 80 nGy/h.
Below we present screencaptures as of moments ago, as apparently the Japanese government seems to believe that abnormal gamma radiation levels are perfectly notmal:

Not surprisingly, Fukushima is completely N/A, as every single reading is Under Survey, also known as censored.
But the stunner is Ibaraki. We will let this one speak for itself:

different altitudes above sea level up to 1100 m and over the land were
made at a temperate latitude (40°) in the Thessaloniki region, North
Greece, before and after the Chernobyl accident (26 April 1986), using a
portable γ-ray scintillation detector and a Cutie-pie survey
meter with an ionization chamber, the average value of the total
background radiation at ground level was 87 nGy h-1 (10.0 μR h-1, 25 cps), i.e. 60% from terrestrial radiation, 55 nGy h-1 (6.3 μR h-1, 15 cps) and 40% from cosmic radiation, 32 nGy h-1 (3.7 μR h-1,
10 cps), before the Chernobyl accident, while, after it, the total
background radiation was doubled, due to the long-lived radioactive
fallout suspended in the atmosphere and or deposited onto the ground.

as I have been saying, let the evidence come out...there are enough dosimeters to know what the reality of radiation leakage is without wild conjecture.
That said, this is what Cs137 will do. If the core gets ejected, one will see these meters go apeshit higher. 30x normal while sounding big is not going to pose a risk to anyone over the decay periods of these radionuclides. Just watch them over time and note patterns of increase or decrease, compare against the half-lives of the expected radionuclides and you will be able to deduce what has been leaked.

Japanese news reporting has been very good; they have given out numbers several times; they anounced that the core temperature was 360 Centigrade, and declined to 350 in about an hour; these are very moderate temps. With these kinds of temps. it won't be necessary to vent more steam, (which is the entire source of the radioactivity that can be observed); it's really late for things to be melting; there's a certain amount of heat available after shutdown and the heat source decays constantly, well, not constantly but continuously; After this much time since shutdown there shouldn't be enough heat available to melt the materials the core is made out of. Also; the cores are conpletely contained inside a steel can, which is inside a re-inforced concrete can; They should just continue to cool off without a lot more drama; the drama was caused by hydrogen gas and air ignited inside the building; this is a combustion event; not really an explosion; the over pressure got rid of the concrete; but it has no effect on the reactor core or its containers. If you dropped a locomotive on the outer concrete housing of the reactor itself, it would just bounce off.

Notice the log-scale chart to the right. Instaneous power at (complete) core shutdown is approximately 7% power. The RCIC turbine was designed to supply enough flow from the Condensate Storage Tank to make up for the losses as the safety-relief valves on the steam headers opened. This was the design in case the reactor tripped and took an isolation (Main Steam and Feedwater, groups 1, 2, and 3? <- been 14 years, at a PWR now). This was with NO operator action. Some EOPS used to have the operators inhibit ADS (Automatic Depressurization System), or essentially override the safeties.
The 7% power decays relatively quickly. After about a day and a half you really have more heat input from the reactor vessel and recirc piping than from the core itself - assuming it is fully shut down.

You are talking nano-grays, right? That means you are talking about a release of roughly 3100 nGy, which converts to 0.31 mR, which equates to 0.31 mRem.
A trained nuclear worker in the U.S. is allowed 5000 mRem per year. A member of the public is allowed 100 mRem, per year.
While this is not good, it is totally consistent with the venting of the steam from units 1, 2, and 3. This is not anywhere near doses that cause health problems.

I clicked on couple of cities with high readings and it seems TSHTF about 4am local time or close to 2 hours ago. Another interesting detail is that there was a big spike, then a big drop almost to normal, then a spike (current values) again.
Spike at 4 then down (to above normal still) then spike again. That's it.

So I guess that 3000 nGy/h is about ten times the maximum measured background radiation in parts of Brazil with relatively high background gamma radiation due to local geology.

Honestly, I'd just wait a bit. I don't distrust the govt yet - in truth I think there's a decent chance they didn't penetrate the inner casing so we haven't seen a core breach yet.
Ok so we have what looks to be an intentional "data dark" situation coming out of Fukushima and way higher than normal radiation down-wind from ground zero.Seems to me there is an obvious correlation. I wonder though, if this apparent "cover-up" of data is to prevent an even more detrimental situation of panic-stricken hordes running from something they don't see or understand.
Radiation is very different from contamination. Radiation will subside quickly (as many isotopes created by fission of transuranic elements have short half-lives) as the decay of such elements, and subsequent radiation energy, falls off parabolically. While contamination is the particulate form of various unstable isotopes that continually decay and produce radation energy for a long time.
In conclusion, radation: short term danger; contamination: long term disaster

This is a nice way of thinking of it. I'd only add that heavy metals including uranium have biological effects in addition to the damage due to radiation. Similar detoxification processes are involved to remove lead, mercury, arsenic, uranium, etc. So the thing is for ingestion to be avoided at all costs because then you get the toxic effects as well as a radiation source inside your body. The big problem is that this stuff is going to enter the food chain, and we all know which species is at the top.
I predict an increase in Japanese whaling far from Japanese waters.

Not sure what to make of this. While 1/2 life of 137Cs at 30 years does suck, I would think that is more of a theoretic long term carcinogenic risk at the most extreme level cited if maintained at this level indefinitely.
3024 nGy/HR works out to 3.0 x 10-4 cGy/HR which is "small". Hormesis anyone?
Compare this to nuclear fallout where lowest level death is single exposure of 500 cGy whole body resulting in hematopoetic syndrome/ death in a couple of weeks vs. x> 1200 cGy resulting in GI death in a couple of days vs. x> 5000 cGy resulting in CNS death 1-2 days.

When I was a boy my chemistry set had, among other excellent experiments, a little tube of greenish radium dust and a small sandpaper-like square of U-235. ( This was obviously prior to the nanny state.)
At night I used to get under the covers and sprinkle the radium onto the uranium and watch the little sparks - mini nuke reactions. Fascinating. I don't know how much radium I inhaled but it was probably significant. Over the years I've wondered when I was going to develop cancer - seemed pretty inevitable. However, at 70, so far so good. Just saying that radiation is quirky.

I spent six year making patrols on a nuclear sub. Wore film badges the whole time. Slept within 200 ft of the reactor. The only time my badges read any exposure was when I hung out in the upper level missile compartment. That was plutonium warhead exposure, not U235 exposure from the reactor. Point is, if there is really increased gamma radiation, the uranium has left the building.
You would have been better served wearing them in the clip joints in Naples or Taiwan.
No that's not correct. many artificial, or induced, radio-isotopes emit gamma. I'm too lazy to look up a list of things you could find in the airborne aersols; and the gas molecule inventory, but this is basicall correct. These readings, or counts, do not indicate anything about the Uranium in the core: which is basically still where it started out.
Your right, there are lots of sources of gamma radiation, and many that occur naturally. It's just likely, when levels increase dramatically, and a local reactor just blew up, that might be the source. And yes, it doesn't have to be U235. It could be any number of unstable elements created out of the fissioning material.

I was on the USS Von Steuben SSBN 632 from 1971 -1975. We wore the film badge on the belt of our poopy suit. It was a small stainless steel rectangular case about one inch by two inches with two film strips inside, one for gamma and one for neutron, if I remember right.

We do know that the original cooling systems for those 3 cores has failed (72 hours ago).
At this time, we can infer that core temperature control and ongoing core integrity is dependent upon pumping sea water using fire truck pump(s) and some make shift jury rigged hose and coupling attachment into a highly pressurized, and highly damaged facility (core 3), while it is leaking radiation.
Sure gives me a lot of confidence. It is hard to ignore the cascading failures at this time ...
We do not know if the core is cooling or not. We do not know if the spent rods are cooling or not.

I think the engineers did their job, but the officials did an awful job of releasing info regarding the situtation, especially when the lid blew off the top of the plant - twice.

The "upgrade" was done by various national geology labs, including USGS. I sincerely doubt they are affiliated with any insurance companies. This is not a bond rating agency scam, fer chrissake.
