Gamma Radiation In Fukushima-Downwind Ibaraki Disclosed, 30 Times Above Normal

Tyler Durden's picture

For all who have been looking for realtime radiation data from Japan, you are in luck. Or maybe not, as the data unfortunately indicates nothing good. The System for Prediction of Environment Emergency Dose Information (SPEEDI) releases gamma radiation data online. The site is jittery and apparently not suited for major traffic which is why we represent several screen captures of the data. While it is not surprising that according to the website both Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures are entirely "Under Survey" as it makes sense that the government does not want to generate panic, SPEEDI has disclosed some tell-tale data about cities in Ibaraki prefecture, which is just a hundred or so miles north of Tokyo, and is just south of the ill-fated Fukushima prefecture. And the data is stunning: based on a N, NE and NNE wind direction (where it originates), meaning all coming from Fukushima, with a normal reading in the 80 nGy/h range, the city of Kounosu Naka is at 3,024, Kadobe Naka is at 2,416, Isobe Hitachioota is at 1,213 and many others are in the mid to upper triple digit range! Again, this is based on wind coming out of Fukushima and ultimately headed toward the capital. Indicatively, normal terrestrial plus cosmic gamma radiation is about 80 nGy/h.

Below we present screencaptures as of moments ago, as apparently the Japanese government seems to believe that abnormal gamma radiation levels are perfectly notmal:

A map of all prefectures, showing maximum gamma radation readings. Note Ibaraki at 3,024 nGy/h, and Kanagawa right below it (and downwind) at 224 nGy/h compared to low double digts for all other prefecture.

Not surprisingly, Fukushima is completely N/A, as every single reading is Under Survey, also known as censored.

But the stunner is Ibaraki. We will let this one speak for itself:

As a reference, based on background radiation measurements in the lower atmosphere at
different altitudes above sea level up to 1100 m and over the land were
made at a temperate latitude (40°) in the Thessaloniki region, North
Greece, before and after the Chernobyl accident (26 April 1986), using a
portable γ-ray scintillation detector and a Cutie-pie survey
meter with an ionization chamber, the average value of the total
background radiation at ground level was 87 nGy h-1
(10.0 μR h-1, 25 cps), i.e. 60% from terrestrial radiation, 55 nGy h-1 (6.3 μR h-1, 15 cps) and 40% from cosmic radiation, 32 nGy h-1 (3.7 μR h-1,
10 cps), before the Chernobyl accident, while, after it, the total
background radiation was doubled,
due to the long-lived radioactive
fallout suspended in the atmosphere and or deposited onto the ground.

Amid growing alarm about problems at three stricken nuclear reactors, France on Monday became the first country to advise its nationals to leave Tokyo. In a notice on its website, the French embassy also cited a warning from Japan’s meteorological agency about a possible large aftershock in the Kanto region around Tokyo, following Friday’s 9.0-magnitude earthquake and tsunami that devastated the north-east of Japan.

“The probability of such an event in the next three days is 70 per cent, and 50 per cent in the two days following,” the embassy said.

“Based on the above stated risk of probably a severe earthquake, as well as the uncertainty of the nuclear issue, it seems reasonable to recommend to people who do not have to stay in the Tokyo and Kanto area [that] they should not do so ... We strongly advise French nationals to postpone any travels planned to Japan.”

France’s move highlighted growing concerns among embassies about the safety of nationals.

They have all but admitted now that there is serious radiation exposure.

As I said earlier.

This is now somewhere between Three Mile Island and Chernobyl.

However it has the possibility to exceed Chernobyl.

They are beginning to talk about the extent of the contamination.

huh?  Days ago when we had bldg explosions I said this was worse already than TMI.  JFC, try to keep up.

At the FIRST venting of radioactive steam, the situation reached the severity of TMI.  TMI was a big nothingburger.

All I ever did was tell you idiots to NOT PANIC and stop the fucking hysterics and watch the dosimeters and the live feeds.

At every point, I highlighted that primary containment breach was a worst-case outcome and to watch dosimeters to ascertain whether or not such an eventuality had occurred.

For this to reach Chernobyl, there will need to be some kind of explosion or fire which liberates core elements.  That is STILL a possible, but less probable outcome.

They are talking about a fire in reactor 4, but 4 was out of operation at time of quake, no fuel in reactor, sounds like a fire in the spent fuel pool...? Am I getting this right? Just fire, I hear you, I am referring to what the translators were saying, they were talking about the fuel in the pool, that the pool needs water, they need to put water on it. Since I do not speak Japanese, I am relying on the stamering translators.

Ah, they just said the fire is result of a hydrogen blast, from spent nuclear fuel in reactor, which was not operating. WFT???

My understanding on unit 4 was there was fuel in the reactor, but it had cooled below 100C (cold shutdown). No idea what might be burning, it could be spent fuel, if it is relatively new in the pool and became uncovered. Impossible to say at this point, though.

Chernobyl contamination of agricultural land:

http://www.oecd-nea.org/rp/chernobyl/c06.html

"The releases during the Chernobyl accident contaminated about 125 000 km2 of land in Belarus, Ukraine and Russia with radiocaesium levels greater than 37 kBq/m2, and about 30 000 km2 with radiostrontium greater than 10 kBq/m2. About 52 000 km2 of this total were in agricultural use; the remainder was forest, water bodies and urban centres (Ri95).

Since July 1986, the dose rate from external irradiation in some areas has decreased by a factor of forty, and in some places, it is less than 1% of its original value. Nevertheless, soil contamination with 137Cs, 90Sr and 239Pu is still high and in Belarus, the most widely contaminated Republic, eight years after the accident 2 640 km2 of agricultural land had been excluded from use (Be94). Within a 40-km radius of the power plant, 2 100 km2 of land in the Poles'e state nature reserve have been excluded from use for an indefinite duration.

However, it is not possible to predict the rate of reduction as this is dependent on so many variable factors, so that restrictions on the use of land are still necessary in the more contaminated regions in Belarus, Ukraine and Russia. In these areas, no lifting of restrictions is likely in the foreseeable future."

Area of the Kanto Plan, Japan: 17,000 square kilometers.  This area supplies 15% of Japan's rice and 40-60% of several vegetable crops.  It is the largest arable and urban area in Japan, a nation no bigger than Montana.

http://rdgs.dk/djg/pdfs/109/2/Pp_147-159_109_2.pdf

A significant impact to the Kanto Plain is an existential threat to Japan.

Where is the plan to entomb these facilities?  Can someone ask President Obama about it?

The odds may still be low but they are clearly rising.  Nothing pisses me off more than obvious failures of contingency planning when the stakes are high.

Other than that, my coal stuff was up bonzer today, and the rest is oil and pipeline MLPs.

I concur that govts will buy futures; they really have no other choice. If we get another '08, the show will stop totally.

One of my best friends is a jap and I had to call him last night just to make sure...this is a royal shitshow.  The part for this that has to be hard is that chernobyl and TMI were incompetence related; Japan got an Act of God.

It isn't nice to tempt Mother Nature by building on a fault line.  Some you call that incompetence, others arrogance.  Nothing has changed since the Tower of Babel.

Has it?  The Tower of Babel is a cautionary tale about man's arrogance and pride, which is the point of my analogy.  However, if you want to talk engineering, the analogy is not fitting.  The Tower of Babel was not completed, so it did not structurally fail.  Fukushima is a structural failure to withstand a foreseeable risk, i.e. major earthquake and corresponding tsunami.  I wouldn't be touting our modern engineering marvels at a time such as this.

Oh, you're right, then it would be OK to build a nuclear plant anywhere on the three big islands.  What was I thinking.

Based on what I heard, it was only the fifth largest quake in Japan's history.  However, the Japanese have been very proud of their efforts at land reclamation from the sea.  Not looking so good now.

In your world of perfect moral relativism, morality has no meaning. For the rest of us, there are standards that most of us generally agree to. Most of us can agree when they've been violated. I think it's reasonable to presume that is the case here.

1 nano-Gray (nGy) = 10 to the minus 9 Grays (10E-9 Gy)
(3817 nGy/h)(10E-9 Gy/nGy)(100 Rem/1 Gy)(1000 mRem/1 Rem) = 0.3817 mRem/h

we can break this down more

(0.3817 mRem/h)(24 h/day)(365 day/yr)(1 Rem/1000 mRem) = 3.82 Rem/yr

normal exposure limit is 5 rem/yr

This is hardly an alarming figure.

ENTOMBMENT.

These assholes have been way behind.  They need to get ahead of this thing.  Entombment is the way to do it.

All forces and resources in the world should be trained on this.

Dear President Obama: Please land several divisions with aid, and entomb these reactors for our dear friends the Japanese if they are lacking in capability.  --thx

Well, it's confirmed that there are large radiation leaks significant enough to impact human health, and this is from the Japanese Government.

Unlike before, they have not specified a number of radioactive material in the discharge or air, and there are some very nervous scientists on media channels all uniformly saying that the it's a foregone conclusion that the numbers have to be very high for the government to make that statement, and to advise anyone within 50km who has not evacuated to seal themselves in their dwelling.

Also, the Chinese Government is advising residents of their coast to take precautions by running A/C systems if they have them and via other methods (? I don't understand this, yet, unless there's A LOT more we haven't been told), and Chinese & Filipinos are stripping shelves bare of iodine products in stores, although there is no video, yet, of the reported panic.

With all the other options out there and those that are being suppressed by some other types of energy providers, we need to carefully choose our forms of energy sources.  This just goes to shows that the risks are still very great-- especially when natural disasters will become more frequent.
