As Gasoline Prices Pass $3.81, Stranded Motorists Looking For Cheap Refueling Options Surge

Tyler Durden's picture

Following this week's ebullient UMichigan consumer confidence readings (which continue to diverge from reality as per Gallup, which oddly enough does not poll Wall Street CEOs who are always eager to give their economic assessment from the infinity pool while vacationing in Fiji) one would think that the price of gas had fallen of a cliff. Alas no. In fact quite the opposite. And the propaganda logic of the domestic ministry of disinformation, consumers in Hawaii must be by far the most confident as it is the state where gas prices are now at virtually all time highs, well ahead of the peak summer driving season. Businessweek reports: "Hawaii's average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline hit a nation-leading $4.46 on Thursday, 28 cents higher than second-place California. The national average reached $3.81, according to AAA data. Wyoming had the cheapest gas in the country at $3.53. As many states brace for gas to climb to $4, Hawaii was the first to reach that mark a month ago. The Aloha state's average on Thursday was 12 cents higher than a week ago, according to the automobile association." The weekly increase is double what the national spike for regular gas was, which moved from $3.750 to $3.818 in the span of a week (compared to $2.858 a year ago). And as the LA Times reports, the ongoing surge in gas prices has led many to paradoxical outcome of literally run out of while driving from station to station looking for the cheapest refuelling option.

For the first time since the record-setting gasoline- and diesel-price summer of 2008, there has been a double-digit increase in the number of Southern California motorists gambling -- and losing -- a bet that they will find a pump price they can live with before they run out of fuel. Experts say it's a common form of rolling the dice out of anger and frustration.

"When prices go up, people like to push it. If it is costing you $50 or $75 or $100 to fill up, that is real money they don't want to part with. They are hoping to find a bargain, and they push it further and further," said Jason Toews, co-founder of GasBuddy.com, a system of 185 websites where members post the highest and lowest prices they find.

AAA of Southern California says that an average of 15,600 of its members a month are having to make one of those mildly embarrassing "stranded, need gasoline" emergency calls in the 13 counties within the organization's jurisdiction. That's an increase of 12.9% over the first quarter of last year, and it represents the biggest jump since the California gas-price average hit the AAA all-time-high mark of $4.61 a gallon on June 19, 2008.

"It's happening again to a lot of people," said local AAA spokesman Jeff Spring. "Our presumption is that these current high gasoline prices have a lot to do with it."

The current state average is $4.191 for a gallon of regular gasoline, according to the AAA Fuel Gauge Report, which is compiled by the Oil Price Information Service and Wright Express. That's up from $4.125 a gallon a week ago and just $3.112 a gallon at this time last year. Among states, only Hawaii, with an average of $4.464 a gallon, has more expensive gasoline than California.

And since in America denial is always the best strategy to dealing with any form of problem the AAA issued the following directive for its intellectually challenged, yet driver's license holding, members: "'E' for an empty gas Tank May Turn into a capital 'E' for Expensive repair." One could also argue that 'E' stands for 'Eliminate' the idiots who have gotten America to such a dire predicament whereby the benefit of the Poverty Effect for all is having a vastly greater impact on mass psycholog than the Wealth Effect for 0.1%. And for those still confused, the price of Brent crude has jumped by 67.4% since the Chairsatan's Jackson Hole speech, while the S&P is up just 26.3%.

Yet somehow we are positive that this now near boiling anger at the pump will translate itself into another record consumer confidence high next month courtesy of the Bizarro day spinners at the BLS and the Ministry of Truth.

And for those, like the Benzebub who never need to refuel, and wish to see a state by state breakdown of average gas prices can do so here.

But...with change...there's always opportunity! And our sermonizing leaders would be the first to point that out. Consider these entrepreneurial growth industries if you will:

Unmarked MiniVan carpools. Pick up ex-commuters in the 7-11 parking lot. Cash only.

Miracle gasoline additives that put a...errrr...camel in your tank

Roadside assistance: I mean set up by the side of the most congested urban commuter routes with cans of gasoline. You'll be right there when the guys who decided not to fill up from sticker shock start to sputter

Stress management class, primal scream therapy courses, martial arts instruction, inflatable punching clowns with recognizable faces, angry bumper sticker sales....

There. Problem solved.

The price for gas should be in the $6-8 range just like most of Europe. Then perhaps we would change our habits of driving huge cars/trucks a huge number of miles every day. You call people sheeple and then think we get the best outcomes by leaving them unled.  The only way anything of any significance ever gets done is when one imposes his will on another.  That is a given in life.  The only variable is in what way that will is imposed.  What evidence have we ever had that the will of the market results in overall better outcomes for anyone other than themselves?  Since the trapped miner in Mullen Idaho is in the news, and as one example, I urge you to educate yourself to what the will of the silver market did to the Coeur d'Alene watershed.

Ha.....those are pretty good retorts......but I think my point was missed. Driving a big car is hardly elitist because so many people do it here in the U.S. Most of them are up to their eyeballs in debt and bought them for the wrong reasons back when gas was $1.50 or 2 a pop. No, the reason we pay so much less is because our gas is bought with the world reserve currency and it is way overvalued. But, you know what, if it takes taxes to change schmidty habits then I say go ahead. The habit of an individual driving around in a honkin huge SUV, transporting multiple cubic feet of empty space with him/her, just to make a lifestyle statement has outlived its value. It is a paradigm that has been packaged, wrapped and sold to the public by the consumption driven economy and too many of us fail to use our brains to figure it out. Next, someone will tell me how great cable TV is and how it is not a great example of bait and switch.

Why do you have the right to dictate to others?

That is the question.

You do not have the right to control others, even if they are being stupid. That is a very real slippery slope.

In the end, it is their money, not yours. Let them be responsible for their decisions.

You are not their daddy, and to try to become their daddy will only result in more evil than existed before. History is my specialty.

Rodent - I get in general what you are trying to convey.  But we don't live life in general.  Everyone lives in the specific.  And because we congregate in towns and cities (because there is value to that), poor people and stupid choices end up having an impact on the group.  Therefore, the group gets to set boundaries and rules.  When the group takes care of its members, it has the right/responsibility to dictate to its members.

Very few members of the world sustain themselves in the forest, alone, with a bow and arrow.  Only those who live this way have a right to ignore suggestions from the group.  We all share the resources of the earth.  They are finite.  We are not wrong to point out when someone (or groups of someones) is being a piggy.

I don't like any taxes any more than the next person. That said, there are taxes on alcohol, tobacco and a plethora of other items. There is already a tax on gas. Supporting an avenue for positive change does not equate to dictatorship......it could, however, help give us more time to transition to a more sustainable form of society. Why impose a lifestyle change on America?  The US has more nuclear weapons, paid for by tax money.  Why not impose the lifestyle change on China and India?  They will expand consumption while America contracts it (and GDP).  What sense can this make, given America's nuclear arsenal?

Sat, 04/16/2011 - 17:01 | 1176461 r101958
r101958's picture

It is going to happen anyway. We consume about 25% of world oil production but only produce about 10%. Do we really think that the rest of the world will continue to foot the bill for our lifestyle? Don't think so. So, either we make the changes ourselves, just as I did, or it gets forced on us when the world decides not to buy our debt anymore. I am open to constructive suggestions as to how we can best help change along (no, and I don't mean Obama change either). Our populace refuses to accept that resources are finite. What is worse, our leaders don't tell the truth about it. They keep feeding us platitudes like if they stabilize the economy with massive money printing that everything will somehow be ok. I have yet to hear them really talk about resource issues and yes I know why. All we need to do is look at how Carter was excoriated (much deserved for other things but not for this) for telling us that we were heading into problems with resources.

I don't think you focused on the point, which is an overwhelming advantage in nuclear weapons.  The oil consuming Chinese populace could be eliminated with only modest American losses of perhaps 30 million.

Your so off, the guberment stand's right in the way of progress in the energy sector. Ban this, ban that, slow play this etc. There is a pending bill right now for Nat Gas to help supplement diesel, which haul's most of your food to you and us. The fucking senate would rather debate gas emmision's on farting cow's and how to tax the cattle rancher for it. That is not a joke either.

Read below.

----------------------

http://www.pickensplan.com/ngv/

Natural gas is an off-the-shelf technology for cars and trucks. According to NGVAmerica, there are more than 10 million natural gas vehicles (NGVs) in operation around the world. However, there are only about 130,000 NGVs — about 1.3 percent — in the United States.

Conversely, batteries will not power heavy trucks and hydrogen fuel cells may be decades away from being in widespread use. We are even further away from having a battery advanced enough to efficiently power heavy trucks. Natural gas is the only fuel capable of offsetting
imported diesel to power heavy trucks — the 18-wheelers which move goods around America.

Over-the-road truckers frequently run the same routes and stop in the same places on a regular basis. Unlike passenger cars and SUVs, truckers generally use the same facilities to eat, rest and refuel along their routes.

In addition to over-the-road trucks, there are a growing number of transit companies converting to all-natural gas municipal buses. In Los Angeles alone there are more than 2,800 NGV buses in operation.

Refuse and recycling trucks are among the most inefficient vehicles on the road. They are either at idle or driving at walking speeds for most of their work day. San Diego County is aggressively replacing its refuse and recycling trucks with NGVs.

Any fleet operator — taxi cabs, utilities, and express delivery firms, for example — whose vehicles go back to "the barn" every night are candidates to be up-fitted to NGVs. AT&T, which operates one of the largest domestic fleets in America, recently announced it is purchasing
approximately 8,000 vehicles over the next few years to replace gasoline and diesel vehicles with NGVs.

Cost

Even with higher initial costs (which will disappear as manufacturing ramps up) the life-cycle costs of NGVs are significantly lower. Fuel costs are at least 15 percent less using natural gas rather than gasoline or diesel. An equivalent gallon of compressed natural gas (CNG) provides the same miles per gallon as a gallon of gasoline. And the cleaner burning nature of the fuel means maintenance costs are reduced because engine parts such as spark plugs stay cleaner while operating on natural gas.

I have a friend in FL who is going to Wyoming to work on the oil rigs.  He said they're doing a bunch of hiring at the moment.

I also wonder if the Gulf Oil Spill wasn't a global demonstration that the USA has all the oil it needs - just a thought.  We were shown in such a way that we have so much oil, but it was done using a natural disaster which got people demanding the thing be capped.

I think we have smart people who run things - after really looking at how corrupt and what a bunch of bullshit is all around us - you gotta hand it to TPTB, they pulled off one the grandest of all schemes - controlling the fuk'n population, money system, education, military...everything that matters.

The smart thing to do would be to use everyone elses resources up (via importing everything) and when they start screaming go back to producing it yourself...all while decreasing the standard of living and not letting any peasant get too wealthy...and using fear of course!

It will weaken the will of OPEC. It will create a transitory cushion into other energy flows. There is a lot more oil in the ground, than what is being disclosed. It will slow down the bad guys that buy dollars every day, and sell them for Euros. The EU is the biggest Ponzi scheme going right now. Just watch what happens over the next 90 days!

Of course there is more oil in the ground than is being disclosed. Unless you admit to being adiabatic oil muppet there is, by definition, a finite amount of oil in the ground. We've already exploited much of the easy to get oil, there are still discoveries being made but most of the large discoveries can be safely labelled "not easy". Deep water off shore is not easy but it's being done, oil sands is not easy but we're exploiting the hell out of those now. ANWAR won't be easy to develop, there's a lot of oil there but the oil is spread over a huge area so your ROI is less because of the sheer amount of infrastructure you need to build.

I doubt you junked me. But to each his/her own. Your remarks are some what accurate. First of all. There are large crude deposits in shallow water. Oil sands are expensive but usd/cad @ .9594 interbank as we speak is certainly not cost prohibitive. I invested in the Bakken shale reserves in 09. Montana, South Dakota, Wyoming ect... Anwar is joke you're right. The Artic is a drilling nightmare. The infrastructure is in place. Lots of platforms for lease. So many they invested in LNG. I like your input though and welcome your thoughts. Thanks.

Geez retards gas is what $8 gallon in Europe and it's not the end of the world. Of course they don't have 100 million soccer mom bitches and nanny daddies idling at the middle school to pick-up one child in a Escalade or equivalent and shuttle them to soccer practice. They also have an efficient rail system that most people utilize and they probably don't hop in the Escalade to drive to the store for one package of microwave popcorn.

I don't think there will be any demand destruction this time. Those that have money read BRICS will hoard at this price. So get use to it.

#1  our financial policy sucks and much of the increase is due to currency devaluation.

#2  Our energy policy sucks which allows the players manipulation through speculation.  My guess, within the next 2 weeks there will be another scare in the Middle East, the CBs will already be long in the trade.

#3  While it is true many need a diet on the mileage, I think we could do a much greater service environmentally via the reduction in plastics.

Future generations won't be questioning our vehicles, they will be too busy laughing at our politicians.

Wow, your prices are approaching Canadian prices. I was about to gently mock American's horror with high gas prices but math > opinion I guess. I shall supply a datapoint. Regular in Calgary is 121.9CDN/litre which is 4.77US per USG. You guys are getting up there, I hope neither USA nor Canada will approach European prices anytime soon but I fear we will.

Sat, 04/16/2011 - 17:18 | 1176501 Yen Cross
Yen Cross's picture

Have you looked @ cad/usd lately?

Sat, 04/16/2011 - 17:35 | 1176525 kinetik
kinetik's picture

Of course. Your per litre price is still amongst the lowest in the world. In Calgary:

1.21900 CDN /litre = 1.264 USD/litre @ $1 CDN = 1.03703 USD (current exchange rate)

1.264 USD/litre * 3.78 litre/USG =4.778 USD/USG.

So that's how much we are paying for a USG in USD where the vast majority of the oil in Canada is produced. Check the per litre price in Montreal, it's 1.42. Me thinks you Americans need to hush up a bit about your "high gas prices" until they exceed Canada's and approach Europe's.

$1.21! Come to the GTA and try $1.32 on for size!

Eventually we will approach 1.50 /L and once that psychological barrier is breached, it will be a short trip to 1.80/L, which will become the new normal. We'll pay 2 bucks per litre eventually. People will continue to drive, but perhaps be more discriminating about how and when they do.

Who knows, maybe price discipline will help with traffic and wear and tear on infrastructure. That won't help people who have to drive long distances to work, but adjusting the living arrangement that we've just spent decades building takes time.

Maybe the AAA should charge for the gasoline they give to people who run out of gasoline. That free gallon of gas will knock 5% off the AAA members fuel costs. An Xmas visit meant driving 200km in the extreme cold and I had never ever driven my car in the winter except for one short city trip.
