Get Ready to Throw Your Remote at the TV

madhedgefundtrader's picture

You are about to be pounded senseless by competing sets of data arguing that global warming is accelerating, not changing, or like Santa Claus, doesn’t exist at all. You will be offered truckloads of contradictory, apple and orange comparisons, which sound relevant to non-scientists, but make it is impossible to reach any meaningful conclusions. The onslaught will be so annoying and offensive that you will no doubt be prompted to throw your remote at the TV in a fit of anger. With health care soon out of the way, cap & trade, alternative energy, and the restructuring of our energy infrastructure will move to the head of the queue as the next battleground in Washington. A stubbornly high unemployment rate and a potential double dip recession means that Obama could lose control of the house in November. So he has no choice but to ram through his most radical legislation in 2010. It’s now or never. The president certainly made no secret of his desire to wean the country off of terrorist financing imported oil during the election, which means that we have to come up with 20 million barrels a day of crude in energy equivalent or savings from somewhere. Think 10-20 supertankers a day of Texas tea. The environment is first and foremost an engineering issue. The last time I checked, both parties, even their most radical wings, agreed unequivocally that the boiling point of water was 100 degrees C, the atomic number of carbon was 6, and the formula for carbon dioxide was CO2. That won’t stop politicians from hijacking, emotionalizing, and clouding the issue to serve their own selfish local agendas. At stake is nothing less than the 10% of America’s GDP that the energy industry accounts for, and the moving of substantial economic amounts of activity out of Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana to the East and West coasts. Don’t expect this to happen without a knockdown, drag out fight. Since I believe that alternative energy will be one of the dominant investment themes of the coming new decade, and have the luxury of a science background, I will be wading through this morass attempting to provide readers with whatever insights I can. Watch this space, and keep that remote handy. For more iconoclastic and out of consensus analysis, please visit me at www.madhedgefundtrader.com .

agreed unequivocally that the boiling point of water was 32 degrees C

At least around sea level the boiling point of water is a bit higher...

Here is exactly what I think about government and everything it does or tries to do (via Jesse's Cafe Americain):

"The government consists of a gang of men exactly like you and me. They have no special talent for the business of government; they have only a talent for getting and holding office. Their principal device to that end is to search out groups who pant and pine for something they can't get and to promise to give it to them. In other words, government is a broker in pillage, and every election is sort of an advance auction sale of stolen goods." - H. L. Mencken

One of my favorites from the master:

"Every normal man must be tempted at times to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin to slit throats." -H. L. Mencken

The funny thing is that if you asked every single one of the congresscritter what the boiling point of water is in C they would get it wrong too.

Thank heavens these douchebags will be coming up with the answers to all of our problems.

The only reason I would participate in the alternate fuel/Green investment/movement would be to free myself of the limited energy choices.

More Choice.

That ought to be the angle they work instead of the fear mongering.

Freedom not Fear.

Thank you for that!  Diversity, yes!

But, the pols are only posturing in order to position corporations for full control (read "subsidized to the hilt").

If we'd been paying the real price for oil I think that much of all that's going on now wouldn't be an issue...

Thanks

If we'd been directly paying the real price for oil, and rewarded the real contributors to soceity instead of the parasites, destroyers and manipulators we'd already have more choices through incentive and innovation

Corporate welfare-Most corporations benefit from the breakthroughs funded by public education/military tax money. The Public benefits temporarily from the Corporate created jobs untill more and more are offshored. The pols benefit from stuffed pockets. The jackals and Owls benefit by knowing these things, yet taking part in enabling/gaming it so as to be in a better position than the sheep.

Yes, please burn mine.
btw, I just got his monthly missive and in addition to cap-n-trade, he promises they will ram@H@H@H work hard to pass comprehensive immigration reform real soon.
It's for the families, you see.

Though it is not clear why the families of illegals are more important than the families of citizens....

The only way 10% of Americas GDP is moving east or west is offshore drilling.
The last time I checked AGW was still a hoax, carbon credits were still a scam.
The last time I checked Obama was still a loser. Still doing what losers do.
The last time I checked the msm was complete and total BULLSHIT!
The last time I checked the TRUTH beat kool-aid hands down as the greatest mind altering drug of all time.
The last time I checked self proclaimed guru's and know-it-alls still got their ass's handed to them at Zero Hedge. Best of luck to ya madhedgefundtrader

-109.3°F or -78.5°C

What the hell's the problem?

Two out of three ain't bad:
Carbon dioxide = CO2
Carbon = atomic number 6
Boiling point of water = 100C

I guess that helps explain what is wrong with both parties.

Dang.
FREEZING POINT of water = 32 degrees FAHRENHEIT.
BOILING POING of water = 100 degrees Celsius
It's easy to make a math error.
Check twice; speak once.

BP of water is 100 C
Atomic number of C is 12.
Formula for Carbon Dioxide is CO2
,which is correct.
As prof Muller, UCB, wrote in an editorial article to
the WSJ several weeks back,
no amount of green house gas reductions by western
countries will make a bit of difference when the
amount of green house emissions by asian countries
is taken into account. We could reduce to zero
and it would have only an insignificant reduction
in total green house gasses, yet our GDP would
take a 10 percent or greater hit
Thats the reality of the situation

Global Warming is just the cover story for Peak Oil.
By reducing CO2 emissions we conservation of Oil,
Coal, and to a lesser degree Natural Gas. Also
Alternative energy Geothermal, Nuclear, Wind, Solar,
and projects such as Mat Simmons has in Maine will
be real jobs, with a purpose, not more government make
work jobs.
