A Girl's (Latest) Best Friend - Keychain Geiger Counters?
Probably a reasonable purchase in these uncertain times.
And yes, this is neither an endorsement nor is it solicited.

We've got two.
I got a radwatch a few years ago.. Geiger counter/Dosimeter. Time to replace the battery though.
We have a separate Geiger counter, the kind with the little wand and earphone. Also in our radiation box and also the topic of much humor among close friends. Until recently, at least.
I have a T-Shirt that lights up when it finds a WiFi signal. That should help, right?
I want that tee-shirt please? "O" you were kidding.. that sucks!
EDIT!!!

We're just going to wait until our dog starts to glow in the dark...

of course, only in amerika.
Can't let a crisis go to waste.
NukAlert may be eligible for purchase under one or more DHS grant programs.
How does that work?
Wow. Straight out of science fiction novels from a few decades ago.
Who runs Bartertown?
Just don't bust a deal. Unless of course it's in relation to a price move of more than 10% in 5 minutes.
Master blaster
Two go in one come out!
Whatcha gonna do, Raggedy Man ?
How do we get some of that DHS money to buy these little beauties?
Its a shame that you won't know if its working or not until its too late. 10 year warranty or not. ;-P
No, you know it's working. If you put them to your ear, you can hear the clicks every few seconds.
Fair enough. Thanks for the info.
You're welcome. This may have been posted as a kind of joke, but these are seriously nice to have, especially when you can't really be sure that what you're seeing on the news is the real deal.
Not meant to be sarcastic. Although I can see how it would appear that way. The warranty thing did sort of confuse me though. That would be the last thing on my mind should its use be necessary.
You can't tell if this, or any Geiger counter, is working unless you can test or calibrate it yourself. Just because it gives off clicking noises doesn't mean that it's not snake oil.
So how do you test it?
The internals of this device are quite ingenious. It's basically a scintillator (something which gives light when struct by radiation) in front of a cadmium sulfide photocell (which changes resistance in proportion to light). There's an LED inside as well, so the device can periodically check that the photocell is working. Since the scintillator is basically just a chunk of plastic coated with a radiation-sensitive material, it really can't break of fail.A microprocessor periodically checks the resistance, and thus radiation level.
The photocell is to a lesser degree temperature sensitive. The device compensates for this but if you can the temperature very rapidly (like put it in a freezer then set it in the sun) it will trigger a false alarm, and that's a user test for the unit.
The manufacturer also calibrates the unit before shipment, and you can expose it to test sources to do a live test. I've done this, it's accurate.
Strangely enough, Oak Ridge (through third parties) will sell anyone a number of different check sources. I got a 5 uCurie Cs-137 source just a few months ago for about $80 to calibrate aa different instrument, if I recall correctly you can get up to 10 uCuries sources, and pick the emitter without any NRC paperwork.
Woof. Color me very impressed! Thank you very much! That was not only helpful, but more than I was expecting. I appreciate it, as I like to know how things work, and you have saved me a bunch of time.
Much obliged.
And watch them turn the US market green
Man, I have seen those things. I bet they sell like hotcakes now..........
I have a couple, but in my opinion the General Atomic's Dose-Guard is a much better deal, since it's an indicating dosimeter (LCD display, alarm, cumulative readout, and priced not that much more.)
THey have a cheaper, non-alarming and much less sensitive version for just $30 that would still work in a major crisis.
They should sell them with a purse-sized can of Mutant Away. Everything a girl needs for a night on the town.

I'm not saying these aren't valid devices, but I think it's a sign that things are overblown. Whenever the headlines/stories appear like this, it's usually a sign that things have reached their most extreme point. The calm after the storm is en route. Contrarian buys like nuclear, Japan, etc look appealing. Silver and rare earths too.
These have been for sale for years. We bought ours over a year ago to have in our radiation box.
Wow. Made in the USA. I thought the Gov made that illegal.
accumulated radiation stickers are 5 bucks each if you buy five....like i did
6 plants within 25 miles....seems like a good investment for the price
ordered the KI too
why not
20 bucks...cheap insurance
ya just never know
now i can BTFD FTMFW with confidence that i wont be reading in the dark with my extra eye
Asshat Scott Wapner of the Ministry of Truth [CNBC], talking with a CEO who requires you to buy stocks in order for him to eat caviar, explains that stocks are cheap on a historical basis...you know, despite the fact that we don't have much of a historical basis where nuclear reactors are spewing radiation and blowing it towards one of the world's largest cities...the city experiencing rolling blackouts...the city representing the world's third largest economy...at a radiated fucking standstill.
Thank you Scott Wapner for showing everyone what a clueless asshat fuckstick you are...either that or little Marxist prick...take your pick.
Dumb people pulling out all of the stops to get you to buy shares of Apple...so that caviar eating can continue unabated.
but what about this impact on the luxury goods market in japan? you know good ole tiffany and coach. that the bloomberg, numb nuts commented on early this AM. these people simply aren't human, no compassion for any person only these fck fart corporations and the bottom line. i am so embarrassed to be an american, i am weak with so much rage against these two so called financial channels that are made available to the public. they want you to think they represent the americans mind set on financial matters.
thank god for zerohedge, thank you god, cause i know tyler is pretty close to a human being that could represent t r u t h. truth is a god to me, any way†
There's an app for that...
I have purchased many items from ki4u. They and their products are reliable. Highly recommended if you want a lower cost method to detect radiation. Far more reliable that what may come out of the mouth of the beast WTSHTF. More sophisticated instruments are available from a US company called Arrow Tech in North Dakota if you are interested.
George
does it have a vibrate function?
These are better...

thanks for the rec. looks like a good one.
They have stopped taking orders....
Why buy this? The next iPhone will have this functionality. How 21st century is that?
OK, so your geiger counter sounds the alarm? Then what? Unless you have a HazMat suit and CBN mask handy, do you just sit in traffic?
a "rad card" is 20 bucks and looks like a red credit card - a good addition to any prepared person's wallet.
I bought a couple bottles of Potassium Iodate a few years back when we had a problem at one of the nuclear plants here. I've just dug around the cupboards to make sure I know where it is.
Potassium iodate is not the same as potassium iodine. You got the bad stuff.

Fair and balanced.
Shane's a very good businessman and KI4U is an excellent company to deal with. I could say that before I interviewed him and after he became a sponsor on my show. It's a very good business model he's found and needless to say he is overwhelmed right now.
