A Girl's (Latest) Best Friend - Keychain Geiger Counters?

Tyler Durden's picture

Probably a reasonable purchase in these uncertain times.

And yes, this is neither an endorsement nor is it solicited.

We have a separate Geiger counter, the kind with the little wand and earphone.  Also in our radiation box and also the topic of much humor among close friends.  Until recently, at least.

Just don't bust a deal.  Unless of course it's in relation to a price move of more than 10% in 5 minutes.

Its a shame that you won't know if its working or not until its too late. 10 year warranty or not. ;-P

Tue, 03/15/2011 - 10:28 | 1055504 -Michelle-
-Michelle-'s picture

No, you know it's working.  If you put them to your ear, you can hear the clicks every few seconds.

You're welcome.  This may have been posted as a kind of joke, but these are seriously nice to have, especially when you can't really be sure that what you're seeing on the news is the real deal.

Not meant to be sarcastic. Although I can see how it would appear that way. The warranty thing did sort of confuse me though. That would be the last thing on my mind should its use be necessary.

You can't tell if this, or any Geiger counter, is working unless you can test or calibrate it yourself. Just because it gives off clicking noises doesn't mean that it's not snake oil.

So how do you test it?

Tue, 03/15/2011 - 13:52 | 1056422 seek
seek's picture

The internals of this device are quite ingenious. It's basically a scintillator (something which gives light when struct by radiation) in front of a cadmium sulfide photocell (which changes resistance in proportion to light). There's an LED inside as well, so the device can periodically check that the photocell is working. Since the scintillator is basically just a chunk of plastic coated with a radiation-sensitive material, it really can't break of fail.A microprocessor periodically checks the resistance, and thus radiation level.

The photocell is to a lesser degree temperature sensitive. The device compensates for this but if you can the temperature very rapidly (like put it in a freezer then set it in the sun) it will trigger a false alarm, and that's a user test for the unit.

The manufacturer also calibrates the unit before shipment, and you can expose it to test sources to do a live test. I've done this, it's accurate.

Strangely enough, Oak Ridge (through third parties) will sell anyone a number of different check sources. I got a 5 uCurie Cs-137 source just a few months ago for about $80 to calibrate aa different instrument, if I recall correctly you can get up to 10 uCuries sources, and pick the emitter without any NRC paperwork.

Much obliged.

I have a couple, but in my opinion the General Atomic's Dose-Guard is a much better deal, since it's an indicating dosimeter (LCD display, alarm, cumulative readout, and priced not that much more.)

THey have a cheaper, non-alarming and much less sensitive version for just $30 that would still work in a major crisis.

I'm not saying these aren't valid devices, but I think it's a sign that things are overblown.  Whenever the headlines/stories appear like this, it's usually a sign that things have reached their most extreme point.  The calm after the storm is en route.  Contrarian buys like nuclear, Japan, etc look appealing.  Silver and rare earths too.

Asshat Scott Wapner of the Ministry of Truth [CNBC], talking with a CEO who requires you to buy stocks in order for him to eat caviar, explains that stocks are cheap on a historical basis...you know, despite the fact that we don't have much of a historical basis where nuclear reactors are spewing radiation and blowing it towards one of the world's largest cities...the city experiencing rolling blackouts...the city representing the world's third largest economy...at a radiated fucking standstill.

Thank you Scott Wapner for showing everyone what a clueless asshat fuckstick you are...either that or little Marxist prick...take your pick.

Dumb people pulling out all of the stops to get you to buy shares of Apple...so that caviar eating can continue unabated.

I have purchased many items from ki4u. They and their products are reliable. Highly recommended if you want a lower cost method to detect radiation. Far more reliable that what may come out of the mouth of the beast WTSHTF. More sophisticated instruments are available from a US company called Arrow Tech in North Dakota if you are interested.

Shane's a very good businessman and KI4U is an excellent company to deal with. I could say that before I interviewed him and after he became a sponsor on my show. It's a very good business model he's found and needless to say he is overwhelmed right now.
