GLD Vault Protector HSBC To Double Banker Pay

Tyler Durden's picture

The banks in England are celebrating austerity in a tried and true fashion: by boosting salaries. SkyNews reports that HSBC, infamous vault custodian of the precious paper for GLD and SLV, has decided to double banker salaries. After all, someone has to trigger inflation. We are confident the broader English population will celebrate the news with the same fervor as it did when it realized it was its generosity that allowed an insolvent RBS to keep operating for a few addition years.

From Sky News:

Sky's City editor Mark Kleinman reports that the bank began informing staff in London, Hong Kong and New York about the pay rises last week.

A source close to the bank said that some senior managers outside the global banking and markets (GBM) division were also being handed the pay increases.

HSBC's move comes ahead of the annual bank bonus round in the New Year.

"As UK politicians intensify warnings about the payment of mega-bonuses, HSBC may legitimately be able to point to a sharply reduced bonus pot by virtue of the fact that it will have only recently awarded large salary increases," noted Kleinman.

"Although investment banks tend to disclose bonuses as part of a total compensation figure (expressed as a percentage of revenue), the move could lend HSBC a small advantage in that it is historically a comparatively low payer in its GBM division," he added.

Banking regulators who are pushing the industry to rebalance investment bankers' remuneration away from variable pay, in the form of bonuses and towards fixed salaries, are likely to welcome the decision.

Meanwhile, HSBC's rivals have already phased in large basic pay rises during the last two years, "so it's certainly possible to argue that this decision simply brings the bank into line with its peers", said Kleinman.

However, politicians are unlikely to praise the salary hikes, given the bank is bumping up the rewards of already well-paid bankers.

Earlier Mark Hoban, the Treasury Minister, said that banks would have to "think very carefully" about the forthcoming bonus round.

"Stuart Gulliver, who will present his first set of results as HSBC's chief executive on February 28, might decide that revealing a separate bonuses figure on that day would provide the appearance of a major bank reining in its bonus pool," Kleinman suggested.

It is good that bankers have once again learned the reason why everyone else loves them so much is due to their humility, and ability to live on the same amount of money as the bulk of the population. After all they provide so much added value to society.

banks think they are paying to retain/obtain talent...

but the word talent is such an illusion..that even the bankers think that they succeeded because of they are that damn good.

Fred Goodwin of RBS was once hailed as a mega talent:-)

The first step would be the bankers to realise that all they are doing is organised gambling.

My friend does a thorough analysis of the horses that he is betting on...surely he is not a gambler..or is he? cant tell the difference these days.

Seems to me more like organization casino rigging!

Looks like Ireland is not accepting any terms currently. They know their people will not tolerate eventual IMF oppresion. Just today the IMF is now demanding a further 4 billion in Greek austerity. Ireland is not Greece and I believe this next 4 billion will only light the protest flames of even more Greeks. The Ponzi masters at the ECB, Fed and IMF are so desperate to keep this fiat insolvent system they would just give the Irish the money free and clear. Eventually the fear tactics and finger pointing will cease when they realize Ireland will not accept the IMF poison pill and they will literally give them free money ad that is when you know the Euro is all over. Any Irish parliament member knows full well it could mean decades of bombings and civil war. They will not serve the IMF. Most Scotch Irish throughout history even today have always seen through the banker ruse.

Ever wonder how it was that money sitting in a bank simply "earned interest" and magically turned itself into more money? Yeah, it's called fractional reserve banking, and it's all about getting something for nothing. Money (debt, really) created out of thin air. You participated in the scam even back then, it seems. And yet folks think those were the "good old days."

Wake up and stop taking things for granted. Maybe the correct way for an economy to work is not with exponents. Maybe an economy should force people to actually produce more energy than they consume. That's real wealth creation.

I respect these guys.  The system is broken and they have the attachments to get rich on the weakness of the political leadership.  What would you do in their shoes?  Go poor because the western democracies are too frail to stick to capitalism when it means a failure?

All losses are socialized accept those falling on individuals.  Banks, big companies, unions, governments - not to worry.  Your leaders are too weak to let you reap what you sow.  They do not actually believe in a free market, buit they'd like it's benefits to fund their political spending.  They'll print money to hand your losses back to those self-same individuals.

The bankers are a sign - a flashing light for the rest of us.  They are not making their money on their wise investment choices and success in promoting a growing economy.  We all see that now.  These people are getting raises for being in the sweet spot of the money-printing food chain.  It's happening right before our eyes.  Don't get mad, act accordingly, protect what wealth you can.  They are too weak to hold your savings.
