Gold Over $1,450, Silver $39

Tyler Durden's picture

Nobody could have foreseen this. Nobody. In other news, Ben Bernanke has just ordered an extra absorbent set of Huggies.

Time for some force majeure announcements from the TBTFs.

For all those who have difficulty getting to the ZH website, try 188.126.66.68 and 188.126.66.66, or try zerohedge.org  or zerohedge.net before you miss your dose of the best financial info out there.

That was always part of their model.... anecdotal evidence says that their delivery times is crap....

My fav. home run was 10000 shares of IPT.TO at 0.22... now at 2.85 or so...

The other one was 10000 shares of TRGD at 0.03, dumped them at 0.56 (and along the way) Only wish it had been 100,000 shares but it took real balls to buy in late Oct. 08

I bought but not as much as I felt I could...the firm I worked for went tits up that Sept. (and no, it was not Lehman or AIG).

I picked up positions in GDX at 17, TCK at 2.50, SLW at 4... sold them along the way to meet expenses....almost forgot, FRG at 2, GWG.TO at 0.09

In March 09, I went big into PBT, HGT at the 8-10 level....

My first ever was HL at $3.22 its $9.50 today. Was $12 about a month ago, so expecting a nice run up past $14 in the coming weeks. Unless it drops to zero of course.

HL is an odd company.... I snarfed some HLPRC at 62 or so, it converted in Jan at 104. I really like HLPRB, the only currently outstading preferred convertable (culumative and mandatory) in the Ag sector, yielding 6% or so, with all the upside....

Oil needs to hit $300-$400/bbl before inflation is a concern.  It's actually a good for the economy when oil is that high as the wealth effect from the oil companies will reign upon the peasants like diarrhea.

Brent crude oil futures extended their rise more than $1 and moved above $122 a barrel on Tuesday as Libya's conflict, Middle East unrest and Nigeria's election delays kept Europe's benchmark crude elevated despite another interest rate hike in China.

The real point for me is that if an Oz. of silver buys me 10 loaves of bread today, It's likely to buy me 10 loaves of bread tomorrow. So it doesn't really matter whether if I have to exchange ounces for FRN's, ECN's, Ameros, something else like IMF SDR's, or just barter with them as is. I'm going to be able to get my 10 (I know that 10 is an "elastic" number) loaves of bread because I had an Oz. of silver with which to buy them.

~ Ive been reading for a while, but it's nice to part of the crowd.

Curious how much physical PM Zero Hedgers own compared to PM ETFs and stocks.  I have 100 ounces of silver and an inflation-protected securities fund that I'm thinking of converting to a silver ETF.

Paper? Paper is dangerous. Stock Markets and banks worldwide will be closing when "it" happens. Look at Egypt, stock markets have been closed for months. Paper is no good, worthless.

YOU NEED PHYSICAL.

100% physical, ZERO stocks / ETF's.  If you dont hold it, you dont OWN it.

One day people are going to wake up / check in on stocks / paper and it will be worth ZERO.   IMO, mass hyperinflation in the US will take 15 minutes to 1 hour to repeat all of the Wiemar run thanks to the velocity of electronic currencies.

I understand this point of view, believe me.

I have to disagree slightly with your appraisal of the severity of the situation.  It is bad, absolutely, but I don't see Weimar on the horizon for this year or next.  There will be some radical changes forthcoming.

If silver reaches $50/oz by the end of summer or the GOP folds on the government shutdown and debt ceiling, I'll reconsider the state of affairs.  But I'm not so fatalistic.  Yet.

Until that day (whenever parity is reached) keep buying:

1. BTFD

2. BTFS

3. and buy some more after that

4. All of the above

wondering about this event, is bullish or bearish for gold and silver. some out of town company took out a full page ad in local paper, will buy your gold and silver everything. in a two day event in a big hotel. they have all the prices listed. now is this good or bad?

Tue, 04/05/2011 - 12:49 | 1137531 Temporalist

It's good for buyers, bad for sellers.  What the ad tells me is that the buyers are getting desperate for more PMs as the sellers must be increasingly harder to reach if they need a full page ad.  Also they are not putting an ad in to sell to the public now are they?  They are preying on people that have few options but to sell their assets.

i thought it was preying on people who are financially strapped. bet they didn't anticipate these rising prices though. they probably had this planned months ago, this is a fairly elite town.

"bet they didn't anticipate these rising prices though."

True, but how many folks rushing in to sell grandma's hand me down jewelry are going to check monex.com or apmex to find out what the spot price is?  Even if they do, would they weigh the items and then be able to calculate the relative worth of what they have to sell?  I see ads like that and think that someone is running a mobile fencing operation.  They run the advertisements a week in advance to alert the local burglars so they can "find" inventory.

Go to a coin shop and buy more.  Don't delay.  Make a purchase plan to buy one ozt a week or whatever you can afford.  I have been saying I wish I'd bought more every time the metals rise vs fiat.  But I bought anyway, even at tops, and I was cautious each time but still am wearing a grin (and still nobody has listened).  When gold hit $1000 and then hit it's first nominal all time high I told people to buy...now they all wish they had.  Waiting is not a strategy it is a disengagement.

Gainesville always bounces my credit cards for some reason, and I don't have the scratch to cover their minimums for a wire transfer.

I've got half on my net tied up in an IRA right now -- I've already withdrawn all but $1k of my original contributions, and the rest is in miners and paper metals. Of the remaining half, 20% is in physical and the rest is in cash. I'd love to double down on my physical, but there's something to be said for liquidity when you're young and expendable in this shitty job market.

then consider Bullionvault or Goldmoney?

I use BV and you can buy and sell at Spot with tiny spreads and have back it in your account the next day, it always impresses me how fast it is.

So your premise is that if there is no paper in circulation, and the supermarket accepts only paper, but there is none available, they won't choose to accept something that has 5000 years of history as currency and is only getting more valuable vs fiat?

I guess according to you everyone will be starving that doesn't have paper, which will be most everyone, and the supermarkets will not be ransacked by mobs and riots, yet you think that if they had a choice they wouldn't accept something rather than nothing to protect their property?

I can price out feeder calves or finished steers in Ag/Au for the right customer.  All the others barter labor (fencing/cactus clearing) or services (dozer work, heavy tillage) for beef on the hoof or 1/2 dressed.
