GoogleEarth Based 3D Map Of Real-Time Radioactivity Distribution In Japan; Projected Global Radioactivity Dispersion
Confirming that in a time of instantaneous crowdsourced information distribution and analysis, any attempt by a government to institute an information blackout of any nature is doomed to failure, is the following amazing Google Earth-based 3D interactive map of Geiger readings from Japan. And if that is not enough, the Pachube community has released an extensive selection of crowd-sourced realtime radiation monitoring tools and widgets, focusing on as many Japanese territories as possible. Shortly we are confident all geographical holes will be filled, and every square mile of the affected territories will be mapped out surpassed the government's "Under Survey" blackout attempts.
Make sure to have the GoogleEarth API set up in advance of checking out the plugin.
Additionally, here is the most recent updated global radioactive fallout per ZAMG.
And a complete list of all the available crowdsourced radiation maps, applications and tutorials

You're not "thrashing" anyone. You are flailing wildly like a fucking autistic, and are consistently failing to appreciate the gravity of the situation. You sit there at your computer claiming that 2 mSev/hr is okalie-dokalie, when that same dose kills 100% of people in less than three months.
You TOTALLY IGNORE the CATASTROPHE that is NO POTABLE WATER IN TOKYO. That means everyone is either dead or evacuated in a week, tops, short of a Berlin-style bottled water airdrop on the city.
YOU are the one who doesn't know what he is talking about. Get your racist ass out of here. Go back to the oil drum and masturbate your pals to the thought of sweet death enveloping us "morons" and leave us the fuck alone.
No potable water in Tokyo?
What, because becquerel readings exceeding gov't recommendations for INFANTS for a day?
OK, so you are RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW, predicting that EVERYBODY in Tokyo is "dead or evacuated" within a week, "tops."
I'm going to hold you to that. How about this...I predict that everybody in Tokyo will NOT be dead or evacuated within a week. We can make it a week as of the timestamp on MY post or on yours, take your pick. It is 1344 EDT as of right now. So, if on Apr 2, 2011, 1344 EDT "tops," if you are correct, I will leave ZH forever. If I am correct, YOU leave ZH forever. Deal?
I won't even address your patently false claim that 2mSv/hr kills "everybody" within 3 months.
I'll put 50 on that. There will still be millions of people in Japan 10 years from now.
You obviously have no clue.
You were in Tokyo this week, were you?
Everyone I know in Tokyo is not out of water. No exodus.
Okay, enough.
I knew all along you are an asshole, I never realized until now you are an asshole with an agenda.
You have set up strawman after strawman argument in here trying to discredit everyone's posts. Enough, you lost all credibility is you ever had any.
Let me sum things up for you. They don't have control of the situation, they never did. Now it's only a question of time for the worse case, not if.
Asshole.
Wow...no sooner did i recite "Downing Effect," but like an incantation YOU show up.
*I* set up a strawman?
No you fucking moron, I asked for EVIDENCE to support BOB's claims that the cores reaching the water table was "probable."
If you think that is a strawman, not only are you stupid, but a moron as well.
As to whether they have control of the situation, now THAT is a strawman. In fact if your stupid ass would go google "strawman," you'd realize exactly that!
A strawman is an argumentative artifice intended to CHANGE the subject onto something which you can prevail but which was NEVER AT ISSUE.
Whether or not they "have control" was NOT under debate! YOU injected it in order to declare a synthetic victory. IOW, it is a strawman.
My request for evidence was not. And at no point have I ever used a single strawman on this topic. I challenge you to find where I have. If you can find one, I'll leave ZH forever. If you cannot, YOU leave. Fair enough?
I don't use strawmen, and I don't commit logical fallacies. I'm not sure you even possess the intelligence to understand what logic is or how your posts are littered with fallacies, but the challenge stands. And i will put that challenge to every single fucking one of you.
I've never been a fan of moderated forums, but after seeing the utter stupidity which masquerades as "common sense" around here, I have become a convert. I lack hope for humanity more now than ever before. Your combination of ignorance plus arrogance is toxic.
Evidence in Physics is a Result of Experiment. And you keep getting different results all the time. Again, in physics there are not facts or evidence. Evidence and facts are things of trust, belief.
utter horseshit, but it is quite late and I have to get to bed.
Let me just point out that you directly contradict yourself in under 3 sentences.
When you are in bed, think about simple fact - Time. Time is a fact. What evidence have you got that Time exists?
Touche.
Now get ready for a wall of cut and paste bullshit.
lol...
I've got no evidence your brain exists either.
I thought you said physics, not METAphysics
Only because you are too stupid to recognize reality. The fact that he replied to you is evidence his brain exists.
Get the fuck out of here, you loudmouth racist genocidal shithead.
sigh...you are apparently so stupid that you can't even reason through cognito ergo sum.
You can "prove" nothing, MORON. Well, I guess you can prove again and again how stupid you are, but Descartes simply couldn't have possibly anticipated someone so dumb. It would have boggled his mind too.
Then why don't you kill yourself, since you can't prove that you or anyone else exists.
Fuck off, you existentialist moron.
Christ, you are turning into a Randian villain here, with this "you can't prove anything" nonsense.
Get the fuck out. You aren't wanted.
@tmosley
I've been reading this whole thing from the start and Trav makes intelligent argument while you and your sidekick, bob_daboduya, engage in childish adhominem attacks and stupid attempts at sarcastic ridicule.
What makes you think anyone wants to read your raving, worthless shit?
Apparently you have a reading comprehension problem, then.
Trav labors under the delusion that this problem is contained. He talks about current contamination level as though they will neither spread nor increase. He talks about it as though the wind has never once in history blown south from Fukushima to Tokyo. He seems to subscribe to some theory about how this can all be contained without killing tens of thousands of workers.
Trav has a habit of calling anyone and EVERYONE who disagrees with him names. I am merely returning the favor, and pointing out at every opportunity that he is a worthless racist shit. He thinks whites and Japanese don't loot. That's bullshit, as I have shown conclusively. He claims only blacks loot. He claims no-one gives a shit about Japan, all they care about is black Haitians, which someone else proved to be conclusively wrong. But he still holds on to it.
So I would suggest you read the thread again. Also, your mother is a whore.
Fuck you mosely...you don't own this fucking website, you fucking punk ass cocksucking uncle tom bitch.
The clock is ticking. you have 6.5 days for EVERYBODY in Tokyo to be dead or evacuated.
lol, a black hating racist calling ME an "Uncle Tom". That's hilarious.
None of this changes the fact that your ass is NOT WANTED HERE. Your junk total attests to that, you racist shit.
you pathetic piece of shit uncle tom punk.
Go back to trolling for PMs.
You think the junks from a bunch of idiots like you means a fucking thing? The facts don't care about their popularity, you BITCH.
Sorry, time is an illusion.
Everything is an illusion, therefore we should all accept what Trav says as fact, and give governments a free pass on any and all things that they royally fuck up beyond all repair.
China and US are all over this thing IF its a threat to their security, as we here at ZH suspect. Probably a shitload of planning behind the scenes.
The China Syndrome was movie fantasyland...
The TMI core was only able to melt its way 5/8 inch into the concrete bed beneath the reactor vessel. These reactors haven't even breached the containment vessel.
Three of the six reactors could be cleaned up and back online producing power in less than a year. The other three could be reconstructed and back online in three years.
It would be reasonable to construct a 15 m tsunami damn...
Too bad they've decided to close the plant.
Your dreaming. No one is going to go in those buildings to re-start the reactors. They might do it to save Japan, but not to get the powerplant back online. There is radioactive zirconium in the run-off. The fuel rods are puddles on the floor. They are completely off the reservation and they need to be thinking way out of the box, soon.
He's not dreaming. He has an agenda.
ad hominem.
Please just shut up for the love of god. Your posts are a crime against logic. From Aristotle to Descartes, they are rolling in their graves.
Fight Club bishez.
You realize this is a BLOG where people get to talk to each other about things that interest them right?
We aren't assembling a white paper here, Trav.
Why the rage...
Because people are shouting fire in a crowded theater just for kicks, and there is no fire.
Shouting fire is not part of the people getting together and talking about things that interest them.
Right, just exposed fuel rods.
Or do skittle shitting unicorns come in radioactive zirconium flavor now?
really?
So, you are just here to accuse people who disagree with idiotic opinions of being "industry shills" or people with "agendas"?
WTF happened to truth? You want to talk to each other about things that interest you...cool. It's apparent that you don't think your little talks should have any basis in fact. It's fine to just half-assedly throw around wild conjecture and circle jerk each other?
You're not talking with each other; you are stating opinions out loud, to me, to each other, to anyone reading.
there was no rage in that post; I was simply stating a fact. People are no longer accustomed to the bluntness of fact. If you watch many old B&W movies you can see this. Our entire culture has made a national passtime out of lying to ourselves and others.
I've never called you anything that I remember. lol...
It's a blog, Trav. A blog. If you're looking for Truth you are looking in the wrong place.
You make good points sometimes. I don't disagree with you all the time.
I dunno. Maybe I'm wrong. But it looks like you rage a lot to me.
You don't just disagree with people. You seem to want to gut them.
Alan Bloom is never going to congratulate you.
fizzy, you know not what you speak of. These plant's are history as far as producing commercial power.Nevermind the human and ecological toll(past, present, future) the bean-counter's KNOW it's not economically feasable to turn a buck here,so it will not be attempted
Whence cometh the radioactive zirconium?
The reactor breach, or magic. That's the choice.
Can't it come from dry storage pools?
eh...the reactor core melted and water has been discharged from it. It could come from the SFPs via fire or even steam, but it could also have come out of the reactor vessel through discharge tubes or even steam as well.
tmosley allowed for only one source of the radioactive zirconium. I thought there could be more than one source and your comment seems to support that.
Bob, I'm pretty sure the reactors and SFPs are lower than the water table or aquifer. I also think the breakwater could be shut north and south to stop open sea contamination. But they sure as shit have to start on it pronto, get heavy equipment on site. Instead of the US Navy running this show, they need the Army Corps of Engineers.
Is that the same ACE that built the levies to protect New Orleans. Thats reassuring.
I am not a ruling things out kind of person, I am more probabilistic in my thinking. There are too many steps leading up to a big steam eruption to make it very likely. Of course, there were a lot more steps before the earthquake! So it's a lot more likely now than before March 11.
Biggest barriers to a CS outcome:
Continued cooling efforts
Disorganization of molten core material
Blockages/complex flow at bottom of vessel
Strength and thickness of vessel
Space/thermal shock between vessel and building floor
Water on building floor--premature/smaller steam explosion, scattering of molten material
Strength and thickness of floor, subfloor structures
Likely rock substrate
Distance to groundwater
Probable small inital opening to groundwater (premature blowoff again)
Blocked channel for steam explosion
..and that's all I can think of. But you get the idea.
Never say never, sez I. I am afraid we'll find out pretty soon.
While it is breaching the "pad", you get hydrogen, carbon dioxide, steam build up.
Some of this could accumulate under the pad.
Penetration through the pad could get interesting ... ?
Jim, I know you have a very scientific perspective but tell me that somewhere in your logical mind a piece of it does not give credit to this theory:

BTW, thanks for all your posts here. Awesome stuff.
Secretz deep in the earth? Sure, why not? The 'dark' budgets are so big, gotta be lots of things going on.
I hope they have a better food court in the bunker than in the airport....DIA food is pretty poor.
nuclear
hot tubs...
a little GG Allin might be appropriate right about now.....die when you die....ya die when you die...
Citizen action shut down the Trojan Nuclear power plant in Oregon. Nobody got whacked doing it either. If you wanted to shut down a nuclear facility in your area you might want to study the template of action that Oregonians used to shut them down. It can be done.
Nah...Trojan was part of repeated referenda which failed to shut the plant down. I know because I voted no on the first one as a resident at that time of the State. Trojan was subsequently decom'd by the utility because their review of plant systems showed very high levels of corrosion in steam tubes which had caused leaks.
The environuts in Oregone are well-known; they fucking hate power generation facilities of all types but GOD FORBID you turn their electricity off; they have a right to that shit. I mean, there are mfers in PDX driving homemade electric cars that they plug in to outlets in special parking areas streetside. Go fuckin figure where that juice is supposed to come from.
Trojan is what is wrong with nuclear power ON BOTH SIDES. On the side of the pro-nukes, the plant didn't last even half of its design life. On the anti-nuke side, where the hell do these granola crunching morons think the fucking juice is going to come from to make their silly microbrew beers and dumbass specialty coffees?
The pinnacle of sick irony is protestors against logging who are using wooden pickets with paper placards affixed thereto.
As I continue to maintain, people have gone literally insane in the past 40 years or so and there is no longer any capacity to even broach the subject of an "adult decision" regarding expectations and how those should be met.
There are a legion of greenies whose ignorance regarding the feasibility of their silly "alt.energy" is incomprehensibly vast and utterly impenetrable. People now actually believe things which are literally less plausible than fairy tales, but you will get nowhere trying to have a simple discussion. They will insist to the point of violence that their faith is justified.
You are such a pussy I would bet you would sell out your own children.
You are a faggot.
You are the worst type of man that exists.
Goodnight...godbless.
you are just amazingly stupid
“I don't use strawmen, and I don't commit logical fallacies.” - trav777
“And at no point have I ever used a single strawman on this topic. I challenge you to find where I have. If you can find one, I'll leave ZH forever.” - trav777
You have made the claim that you do not make "straw man" or ad hominem arguments (a logical fallacy), but your self -adulation is undeserved. You have a penchant for exaggerating the claims of others for disputation(“end of world”, “fucking hate power generation facilities of all types”), gratuitous insults (niggers, idiots), and belittling generalizations “granola crunching morons”, etc..
……………………………….
You are also mistaken to denigrate the significance of the added radiation risk from the Japanese debacle.
According to the National Academy of Sciences, there are no safe doses of radiation.
The National Council on Radiation Protection says, “… every increment of radiation exposure produces an incremental increase in the risk of cancer.”
“Small increases in risk per individual have immense consequences in the aggregate. When low risk is accepted for billions of people, there will still be millions of victims. New research on risks of x-rays illustrate the point.
Radiation from CT coronary scans is considered low, but, statistically, it causes cancer in one of every 270 40-year-old women who receive the scan. Twenty year olds will have double that rate. Annually, 29,000 cancers are caused by the 70 million CT scans done in the US. Common, low-dose dental x-rays more than double the rate of thyroid cancer. Those exposed to repeated dental x-rays have an even higher risk of thyroid cancer.”
http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=23948Exactly. I heard a claim from a colleague on Friday that it would take 50,000 years at current levels to induce cancer. I guess he watched 60 Minutes.
The problem is that the EPA seems to insist that their "safety" levels are protective to 1 in 1,000,000. So there should be 300 people in the US getting cancer, if the "authorities" are to be believed.
Empiricists, on the other hand, simply observe that the current rate of cancer is great than 1 in 3. By my math, that is >33,000X the expected value of US citizens with cancer. This is an epidemic on such a collosal scale that tar and feathering of "authorities" who deemed this all "safe" seems like a minimal response. The full-up response might be much more involved.
look, man, when we have Village Idiots claiming Japan will be "uninhabitable," and that "everybody in Tokyo will be dead or evacuated within a week," you think *I* am exaggerating by characterizing this as the end of the world?? Seriously?
An insult is NOT an ad hominem. You need to review this fallacy. Ad hominem is argument against the person. I BOTH refute the argument AND call the person an idiot for believing it.
Find me a power generation facility type that granola crunchers like.
There is no "safe" dose of radiation...WTF. We are currently exposed to radiation as a result of that big nuclear fireball in the sky. This notion of no safe dose is a result of POLITICAL considerations, not science. People live in areas where they receive 240mSv/yr with no increase in cancer frequency. Don't quote a fucking LOBBY group like NCRP on radiation, ok?
As an Oregonian "environut" all I have to say is that you are smoking crack, and unaware of the downstream costs you are passing along to future generations. Hey, have you heard about Fukishima? <sarc> And BTW, it's Oregon, not Oregone.
You have no basis for your risk assertions, and sound to me like a crazy person.
two questions:
1. what are you wearing?
2. what type of power plant would YOU like to see keep those shiny things we call "lights" on at night?
Hi, long time lurker but first post. Now, this does sound crazy but:
http://www.ufoevidence.org/documents/doc1005.htm
So, u know, maybe we should put an advert out for these guys to come and save stuff....?
Yeah, yeah i know...ufos, nutters etc.....just found it interesting is all....maybe radiation messes with yer eyes ;)
That story is reminiscent of all the ufo sightings/interventions at missile silos. Interesting stuff.
It was quite amusing reading the arguement between bob and trav.
Even though trav is irritating as all shit .... he dominated this fight.

It would appear that this is going to become a continuing cooling mission rather than entombment and Japan will never bring these reactors back on line. Is that pretty much the case?
Continued cooling for the time being. And TEPCO has stated that they do not plan to resurrect the reactors or refurbish the plant.
ding ding ding,"everybody" win's the prize
Tokyo, March 26 (Jiji Press)--Grueling restoration work at the quake- and tsunami-damaged nuclear power plant in Fukushima Prefecture has pushed plant workers to the limit physically and mentally, but still they are determined to accomplish their jobs, an e-mail from a Tokyo Electric Power Co. <9501> employee has revealed.
Although most of staff at the plant are local residents and many of them lost their houses in the March 11 catastrophic earthquake and tsunami, "all of us here are working around the clock to fulfill our duties as Tokyo Electric employees," says the e-mail, which was sent to the person's acquaintances. "We will fight to the end!"
Still, the mail sender, whose parents have been missing since their home was destroyed by the massive tsunami, is agonizing over the deadly reality.
"I really want to rush to my parents' home if I can," the plant staff says. "Working hard in such a mental condition..., I'm at my breaking point."
The Tokyo Electric employee goes on to say, "People have lost all--houses, jobs, schools, friends and families. Who can accept the reality like this?"

The real issue that Fukushima and the current ME crisis raise is HOW and WHEN the world will get out off the Nuclear and Oil patch nightmare, cause of continuous wars and ongoing mega pollution....And the ANSWER is : SOLAR...You better believe it's coming...
In the current scenario the world energy oil demand will continue to grow fast, electricity being a major portion of it. Oil prices will stay tight...PEAK OIL is here to stay...Nuclear projects REGARDLESS technology are DOWN the shute after Fukushima starts really to irradiate land and world sea water reserves.
SO THE WORLD HAS TWENTY YEARS TO PUT IN PLACE THE NEW AGE ENERGY ALTERNATIVE : UNLIMITED SUN ENERGY. As the inevitable entrepreneurial thrust world wide will bring down the unit cost of PV and Solar tower plants like an accelerating spiral down that technology slope at geometric rates. Like it did to the silicon base of the computer chip revolution 35 years ago. Remember IBM? 70% world M.S. in 1980...
By 2040, Solar and other wind/geo/ocean/ renewable technologies will have replaced 80% of current OIL/gas and Nuclear production. Trauma like Fukushima leads to entrepreneurial creativity like no other. Watch the mega erection drive that will now take the world into alternative energy. One american visionary in this area to follow for ZH readers is : Ray Kurzweil. He is overtly optimistic, he even looks like Woody Allen...so believe in him guys...Hope he is another wave generator like Bill G and Steve J... Brave new world!
By 2040, Solar and other wind/geo/ocean/ renewable technologies will have replaced 80% of current OIL/gas
Completely coo-coo. Nothing replaces diesel for heavy equipment, JP for jet aircraft, bunker fuel for shipping. We'll have to convert most of the passenger fleet to CNG by 2040, but solar/wind/blah blah don't have a hope in hell of powering anything except subsidies.
If every photon that impacted every square inch of america was converted some form of useable energy, it wouldn't even come up to half the energy we use on a yearly basis...
So cutting back energy consumption is a MAJOR societal issue. Use less energy per transaction and change energy mix profile away from fossils to renewables. Having said that I have no basis to challenge your claim about potential PV production on US territorial surface vs actuals. Can you give me a thread on that? TY.
Kurzweil isn't really credible on the issue, imo, but that is neither here nor there actually.
The biggest problem with all emerging energy technologies is that they won't scale to our needs for a very long time. They will require very large investments for one thing.
I'm not saying that they can't eventually do so, but we need to overcome our current political and economic lethargy to make that happen.
There won't be any wide scale investment until oil hits $200/bbl in the US, imo. Hell maybe not even then.
Don't down grade the economies of scale and tech. innovative spiral... It's worked before will work again. The oil majors/Electrical utility monopolies have always clamped down on R&D on alternative routes in the past. Now they can't anymore. As for replacement of Oil products for transport fuels, there again I feel there will be break throughs in magnetic motors, hydride batteries, Lithium and alternatives, a whole new ball game... as R&D now fuels it with a vengeance. We have to...I don't see Americans riding bicycles all their lives...maybe those in Manhattan...Kerosine is the true bottleneck for planes...but refining could convert most of the residual oil production to this through Hydrocracking. Oil will stay even in the coming solar age...but less central...especially heavy fuel cuts. Electric public transport systems are around the corner. Electric cars twenty years away on mass scale...We ARE going there...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Py8QYt54EpE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Py8QYt54EpE
"We ARE going there..."
We've BEEN there. We don't even need a lot of new technology.

I bought more seaweed, salmon and Kippers today before they all are glowing with radioactivity or even worse, inedible.
Oh yeah, I also bought more USO oil, GLD gold, and DBC commodities stocks.
GL! to all.
There is a trend here that is not in Japan's favor.
That trend goes something like this:
All news is suppressed, and the government and TEPCO tell all dependent upon them that things are stable or getting better, until empirical evidence is discovered that proves that things are not improving or even stable, at which point the government and TEPCO admit to some (but not all; there's never full disclosure) of the facts (that are inevitably far worse than what they were claiming for the prior several days or weeks).
Now, that's not a good trend. And it would be bad enough under a garden variety crisis.
But this crisis is not a garden variety crisis. It deals with the release of radioactive isotopes and materials that contaminate the air, ocean, groundwater, ground & soil, buildings and other things, with much of that radioactive material lasting decades or generations.
That Japan has small geographic mass, does not have abundant fresh water, is one of the most export-dependant nations in the history of the world, and lacks any oil resources makes this a much larger crisis than any media source has even suggested.
All the claims that some media have blown this out of proportion is laughable when the absolute opposite is true.
Given that Japan is the world's 3rd largest economy, and that is a massive exporter of durable goods, you can take it to the bank that not only will this crisis kneecap the global economy for some time to come, but that much of Bank of Japan's, The Federal Reserve's and European Central Bank's energy and resources are already being allocated towards how to deal with the cascading complications to the global economy because of Japan's crises, and in fact, much of what they wanted to do previously will now not be possible, and they will literally have to reverse course in some areas, because of what's unfolding in Japan.
*I am not arguing that the Federal Reserve, BOJ nor the ECB should be gatekeepers of monetary policy (or that they should even exist or have any such powers - I do not) as it relates to the global shock that is being caused by Japan's crises, but simply acknowledging that they are spearheading these efforts as of now.
It is stated the .114 is the maximum safe background radiation per the chart. I see many areas at .04 or so (below the maximum)......what did these areas measure before the crisis?
Are readings up accross the board in Japan from before the crisis?
