GoogleEarth Based 3D Map Of Real-Time Radioactivity Distribution In Japan; Projected Global Radioactivity Dispersion
Confirming that in a time of instantaneous crowdsourced information distribution and analysis, any attempt by a government to institute an information blackout of any nature is doomed to failure, is the following amazing Google Earth-based 3D interactive map of Geiger readings from Japan. And if that is not enough, the Pachube community has released an extensive selection of crowd-sourced realtime radiation monitoring tools and widgets, focusing on as many Japanese territories as possible. Shortly we are confident all geographical holes will be filled, and every square mile of the affected territories will be mapped out surpassed the government's "Under Survey" blackout attempts.

Tokyo Electric Power Co. on Saturday morning prepared to inject fresh water into the No. 2 reactor core at the crisis-hit Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant to enhance cooling efficiency after it was revealed the previous day that highly radioactive water was found leaking near all four troubled reactor units at the plant.
The utility, known as TEPCO, will try to remove pools of water containing highly concentrated radioactive substances that may have seeped from either the reactor cores or spent fuel pools, while also trying to restore power at the No. 2 reactor.
On Thursday, three workers were exposed to water containing radioactive materials 10,000 times the normal level at the turbine building connected to the No. 3 reactor building. On Friday, a pool of water with similarly highly concentrated radioactive materials was found in the No. 1 reactor's turbine building, causing some restoration work to be suspended.
Similar pools of water were also found in the turbine buildings of the No. 2 and No. 4 reactors, measuring up to 1 meter and 80 centimeters deep, respectively. Those near the No. 1 and No. 3 reactors were up to 40 cm and 1.5 meters deep.
While it will try to analyze the levels of radioactivity of the pools of water found in the No. 2 and No. 4 reactors, TEPCO will remove such water in all of four reactor units to reduce the risk of more workers being exposed to radioactive substances, it said. The risk hinders their efforts to restore the plant's crippled cooling functions, which are crucial to overcoming the crisis, it added.
The utility plans to inject fresh water into the No. 2 reactor core to prevent crystallized salt from seawater already injected forming a crust on the fuel rods and hampering smooth water circulation, thus diminishing the cooling effect. It has begun injecting fresh water into the No. 1 and No. 3 reactor cores.
Early Friday, concern grew that the high-level radiation leak detected with the workers' exposure could indicate possible damage to the No. 3 reactor vessel, but the government's nuclear safety agency later denied the possibility, saying no data, such as on the pressure level, suggest the reactor vessel has cracked or been damaged.
While the high-level radiation is suspected to have come from the reactor, where overheating fuel rods are believed to have partially melted, it remains uncertain how the leak occurred, the government's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency said.

Shoot, I don't know and neither do they. Someone asked about salt early on, he had smelting experience, and I said "no one has ever done this before".
I also saw a statement by some university expert that although tens of thousands of pounds of salt had probably already crystallized it wasn't a problem yet.
But...maybe our navy told them something they've learned running reactors...or maybe they read ZH and got all panicky, cuz that's just how we roll around here. Who knows, maybe they just want it to be 'normal' again. God knows they don't need a cooling inhibitor when they are just a few hours away from disaster already, even with uninhibited cooling.
Plumbing is the key here. There is no other choice as far as they can see. Even with all the debate around here, there's no clear alternative path to just hanging tight with the H2O for....heh. Forever, you see. So they want to automate it as much as possible.
But what a mess. I just don't see it working. There's too much damage. I mean, maybe craft some huge tubs, take a crane and drop the cores in there and circulate water....but how strong can it reasonably be? Earthquake-resistant?
I do not think there is any hope of leaving those cores in those buildings surrounded by all that junk, unless an entombment option is pursued.
Jim, you don't have to build big tubs. They already have a nice strong breakwater that could be closed N and S. Set up a couple Huata H36B tower cranes that can reach all four buildings. Drop fuel rods in the drink in a wide arc, pour concrete over them.

That seemed the very simplest solution, to crush all the outbuildings to rubble and push it against the reactor buildings to make a perimeter of dikes that could be flooded with water, boron, tin, concrete. This assumes that it's hopeless to repair the circulating pumps and burial is mandated. I made a diagram here...

... but there's an unsolved aspect, because the reactor cooling pipes extend down into the seawater underneath the surface grade. I assume many of those pipes were shattered or burst by the 9.0 quake, and that's where seawater contamination is coming from. The undersea plumbing has to be plugged with cement. Probably the first order of business and also the toughest problem. Maybe resin foam would work.

I was hoping that the presence of similar pools at 2 and 4 may have suggested it all came from the spraying operation. Not that that would have been 'good,' but not as bad as a core problem at 3.
They are trying to remove the radioactive pools that are making work impossible, while adding more water, when they don't even know where all that radiation came from.

I can almost guarantee you that there is no brain trust hard at work, at least from TEPCO. They are sitting around a table trying to gain "consensus" from one another...or figuring out how Mubarak got out and where he's living now. The gov't MIGHT be coordinating with universities and other companies, but that comes from fear of their constituency and international gawking at their dawdling, not from an inborn sense of how to manage a (non-political) crisis.

Levels of radioactive materials are skyrocketing in the sea near the crisis-hit nuclear power station in Fukushima Prefecture, the government's nuclear safety agency said Saturday, while the plant's operator has started injecting fresh water into the No. 2 reactor core to enhance cooling efficiency.
According to the government's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency, radioactive iodine-131 at a concentration 1,250.8 times the legal limit was detected Friday morning in a seawater sample taken around 330 meters south of the plant, near the drain outlets of its troubled four reactors.
The level rose to its highest so far in the survey begun this week, after staying around levels 100 times over the legal limit. It is highly likely that radioactive water in the plant has disembogued into the sea, Tokyo Electric Power Co said.
The radiation levels in seawater do not pose an immediate risk to human health, government officials said. But they are well above normal levels and fan concerns over fishery products in northeastern Japan as highly radioactive water has been found leaking near all four troubled reactor units at the plant.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Energy said in its radiological assessment released Friday that by comparing aerial measurement data from Thursday with previous measurements, the data indicate peak exposure rates in the western side of the Fukushima plant are lower.
The utility, known as TEPCO, will try to remove pools of water containing highly concentrated radioactive substances that may have seeped from either the reactor cores or spent fuel pools, while also trying to restore power at the No. 2 reactor in an effort to prevent the situation from worsening further.
On Thursday, three workers were exposed to water containing radioactive materials 10,000 times the normal level at the turbine building connected to the No. 3 reactor building. On Friday, a pool of water with similarly highly concentrated radioactive materials was found in the No. 1 reactor's turbine building, causing some restoration work to be suspended.
Similar pools of water were also found in the turbine buildings of the No. 2 and No. 4 reactors, measuring up to 1 meter and 80 centimeters deep, respectively. Those near the No. 1 and No. 3 reactors were up to 40 cm and 1.5 meters deep.

Frame building over berm/polder pool, taking the air for filtering (Big Vent Hood).
Breakwater ocean storage (The Bluest Lagoon). Really hard to fix this if anything goes wrong, but it won't melt down.

Assistant physics professor says it's not the level of radiation but the intensity of exposure that counts
It’s a memory most will remember until they die. UCSB assistant physics professor Ben Monreal was at a conference in Germany when he first heard news of March 11’s 9.0-magnitude earthquake in Sendai, Japan.
“I was in the back of room reading The New York Times on my laptop when I read the first headline, ‘9.0 Earthquake Hits Japan,’” Monreal said. “There was someone at the conference who has family in the Sendai area. It made me want to get involved immediately.”
But for the time being, all he could do was read and watch. It wasn’t until the tsunami struck and the state of the nuclear power plants overshadowed the natural disasters that Monreal felt he could contribute.
“Hearing about the panic and fear in places far (from Japan) is irrational and unnecessary,” he said, “and I hope teaching people more about how radiation works will save them some stress and energy that they could use in a positive manner.”
Monreal received his undergraduate degree from Yale University, where a nuclear physics lab instructor inspired him to pursue physics through graduate school at MIT. After working as an intern at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, he continued his research in particle physics and astrophysics at UCSB.
He started by explaining the levels of radiation. He says everyone has some level of radiation — it could be from food or the atmosphere — but it’s the intensity of exposure that’s important.
“You could see the radiation dosage increase from someone moving from Santa Barbara to Montecito or Carpinteria because certain base rock is more radioactive than others,” Monreal said. “Even if radiation levels are detectable on the West Coast, that has nothing to do with whether people should worry.”
Radiation is measured in units per hour called sieverts, while a millisieverts is one-thousandth of a sievert and a microsievert is a millionth. Five sieverts per hour of radiation is lethal, he said, while most people experience a handful of millisieverts a year.
“The vast majority of people in Japan don’t even have a shot of getting a millisievert per hour,” Monreal said.
The longer a gas sticks around, the more benign it is, Monreal said, but it’s the gases that don’t last long that are worrisome. Therefore, the chances of any significant levels of radiation reaching California is “flat zero,” he said.
“It will certainly spread in detectable ways to Tokyo and Tokai, but how much will it spread in harmful ways is unknown,” Monreal said. “Even gases in a jet stream are diminishing and are not perfectly intact parcels, so the chances of it getting to California is zero.”
Radiation has manifested in Tokyo. While officials declared Tokyo’s water safe on Thursday, authorities in the city’s suburbs discovered water supplies with radioactive iodine nearly three times the normal level for infants. But Monreal says radiation spreading farther than that is unlikely if people are careful.
The United States has tested thousands of nuclear explosions over the years, and while scientists monitored how radiation spread, he says there was no “magic plume that carried it long distances.”
Fukushima’s fourth reactor container is leaking some of the water used to cool the core, but there is only significant levels of radiation when that water mixed with fuel catches on fire and smoke is released.
“When a reactor is on fire and spewing stuff, people at the reactor — if they are not careful — can have doses on sievert scale,” Monreal said. “Thirty kilometers away, people are at risk, but if people stay inside, it really does help.”
The biggest determinant on the intensity of the radiation emitted will be how much the fuel rods catch on fire, Monreal said. There has been smoke coming out of several of the reactors, but officials are unsure what caused it. Workers were temporarily evacuated, and work in the plant had been slowed as of Thursday night.
“The dose rates would’ve been 400 millisieverts per hour for workers during the biggest spike, but the fire didn’t last long and the dose rate wasn’t high for a long period of time,” Monreal said.
He said that in comparison to Chernobyl and Three Mile Island, Japan was much better prepared. In Chernobyl, the reactor was still fissioning when there were explosions and smoke, and there was no containment vessel. While that contributed to high exposure levels to those immediately nearby, Monreal said the biggest problem with Chernobyl was that people weren’t notified of the radiation, and the consumption of contaminated food resulted in a worst-case scenario.
“What the decontamination team will worry about is getting rid of the cesium and strontium from the topsoil” — like in Chernobyl when workers got rid of 99 percent of the radiation by disposing of the top 10 centimeters of the soil, he said. “The long-term outlook for this area of Japan is perfectly fine. There won’t be large chunks of uninhabitable land.”
He said that unlike Chernobyl, Fukushima and surrounding areas were immediately evacuated and people are careful to avoid any exposure by staying inside and cleaning. At Three Mile Island, gases such as xenon, radon and krypton were released in the steam, but no one was harmed or killed by the potentially deadly gases.
“It was horribly mismanaged and the reactor did melt down, but there was not large-scale radiation release that actually hurt anybody,” he said.
He said he hopes the most recent crisis doesn’t turn people off of nuclear power plants because modern designs are much safer and reliable.
“The vast majority of radiation people are putting into the atmosphere is from coal-powered plants’ smoke stacks,” Monreal said. “People who want to stop nuclear plants, that choice is increasing everyone’s radioactive dose while destroying the environment by climate change,” which at this rate may be beyond saving in five years, he added.
Although nothing bad can be said about solar power, Monreal said it has not progressed enough to rely on.
Click here for a map to monitor radiation readings. Instead of sieverts, it’s measured in roentgen. The normal amount of roentgen is 5 to 20 uR/hr, or microroentgens per hour. Five hundred millisieverts would equal 50 milliroentgens.
“Higher radiation readings does not mean there is an increased health risk,” Monreal said. “It means it reads the tiniest changes in readings.”
He said what the United States needs to worry about are safety standards for nuclear power plants, especially the one in San Onofre.
“Is this thing prepared for a tsunami; let’s ask that question and make sure we have answers,” Monreal said. “The answer should probably not be let’s get rid of it, but maybe move the containment vessel higher up.”

have to interject a correction: a sievert is 100 rem (roentgen equivalent man). Consequently 50 millirems is 500 microsieverts.
500 rem/5 hrs=5 Sv/5hrs.
Basically doses in the 100s of rems get fatal quick and whole number sievert doses are the same.
At 10-100 mSv, worry a ton, start packing to GTFO. 100+ mSv, flee as quickly as possible. At 1+ Sv, start praying.

I am an optimist, and am in constant opposition to Trav's doomsaying "permanent depression" peak oil bullshit. People just don't understand how serious this is. The ONLY way to "fix" the problem, absent a fleet of construction robots, is to sacrifice a huge number of people sealing those reactors (likely ALL of them) under a god-damn mountain of concrete. What fucking moron thought it would be a good idea to store spend fuel on the roof? Might as well sell fucking M-80's at gasoline pumps while giving out free booze for on the spot consumption.

A core, or part of a core, is completely capable of reaching the water table. It's not out of the realm of possibility and infact at this juncture, quite possible.
