Government To Reduce Fluoride Levels in Drinking Water Because Too Much Fluoride Can Cause Health Problems

George Washington's picture

Washington’s Blog

Today, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced a reduction in allowable fluoride levels in U.S. drinking water:

HHS’
proposed recommendation of 0.7 milligrams of fluoride per liter of
water replaces the current recommended range of 0.7 to 1.2 milligrams.
This updated recommendation is based on recent EPA and HHS scientific
assessments to balance the benefits of preventing tooth decay while
limiting any unwanted health effects.

As AP notes:

A
scientific report five years ago said that people who consume a
lifetime of too much fluoride — an amount over EPA's limit of 4
milligrams — can lead to crippling bone abnormalities and brittleness.

That
and other research issued Friday by the EPA about health effects of
fluoride are sure to re-energize groups that still oppose adding it to
water supplies.

***

In March, 2006, the National
Academy of Sciences released a report recommending that the EPA lower
its maximum standard for fluoride in drinking water to below 4
milligrams. The report warned severe fluorosis could occur at 2
milligrams. Also, a majority of the report's authors said a lifetime of
drinking water with fluoride at 4 milligrams or higher could raise the
risk of broken bones.

Late last year, lawyers for the Fluoride
Action Network, Beyond Pesticides, and Environmental Working Group
threatened legal action if the EPA did not lower its ceiling on
fluoride.

In Europe, fluoride is rarely added to water supplies.
In Britain, only about 10 percent of the population has fluoridated
water. It's been a controversial issue there, with critics arguing
people shouldn't be forced to have "medical treatment" forced on them.

Some scientists also have found that fluoride can cause damage to children's liver and kidneys, and to other parts of the body as well.

Here is
the 2006 National Academy of Science report discussed above. The
report reviews scientific studies which find that fluoride affects intelligence.

Indeed, studies from around the world have continued to find that
exposure to fluoride - especially in the very young - lowers IQ. See this and this. The same is true for rats exposed to fluoride. See this and this. And see the studies listed here.

Dr. Vyvyan Howard - a PhD fetal pathologist, who is
a professor of developmental toxico-pathology at the University of
Liverpool and University of Ulster, president of the International
Society of Doctors for the Environment and former president of the Royal
Microscopical Society and the International Society for Stereology,
and general editor of the Journal of Microscopy - said in a 2008 Canadian television interview
(short, worthwhile video at the link) that studies done in several
countries show that children’s IQ are likely to be lower in high
natural water fluoride areas.

He said that these studies are
plausible because fluoride is known to affect the thyroid hormone which
affects intelligence and fluoride is also a known neurotoxicant. Such
studies have not been conducted in countries that artificially
fluoridate the water such as the US, UK and Canada, but should be, he
said.

And as the International Business Times noted last month on the newest Chinese study on fluoride:

Exposure to fluoride may lower children's intelligence, says a study published in Environmental Health Perspectives,
a publication of the National Institute of Environmental Health
Sciences. Fluoride is added to 70 percent of U.S. public drinking water
supplies.

***

About 28 percent of the children in the
low-fluoride area scored as bright, normal or higher intelligence
compared to only 8 percent in the "high" fluoride area of Wamaio.

In
the high-fluoride city, 15 percent had scores indicating mental
retardation and only 6 percent in the low-fluoride city. The authors of
the study eliminated both lead exposure and iodine deficiency as
possible causes for the lowered IQs.

One scientist - Jennifer Luke - alleged in a 2001 scientific article that fluoride accumulates in the brain (specifically, in the structure of the pineal gland) more than
it accumulates in our bones. In other words, she implies that fluoride
may accumulate more in the brain than in the teeth, doing more harm than
good (here's Luke's 1997 PhD dissertation on the topic.)

The 2006 National Academy of Sciences report corroborates some of Luke's allegations:

As
with other calcifying tissues, the pineal gland can accumulate
fluoride (Luke 1997, 2001). Fluoride has been shown to be present in the
pineal glands of older people (14-875 mg of fluoride per kg of gland
in persons aged 72-100 years), with the fluoride concentrations being
positively related to the calcium concentrations in the pineal gland,
but not to the bone fluoride, suggesting that pineal fluoride is not
necessarily a function of cumulative fluoride exposure of the individual
(Luke 1997, 2001). Fluoride has not been measured in the pineal glands
of children or young adults, nor has there been any investigation of
the relationship between pineal fluoride concentrations and either
recent or cumulative fluoride intakes.

Donald Miller - cardiac surgeon and Professor of Surgery at the University of Washington - alleges:

Studies show that the rates of bone cancer are substantially higher in fluoridated areas, particularly in boys. [See this.]
Other cancers, of the head and neck, GI tract, pancreas, and lungs,
have a 10 percent higher incidence. Fluoride affects the thyroid gland
and causes hypothyroidism, which is also an increasingly frequent
disorder in the US. Other studies show that high levels of fluoride in
drinking water are associated with birth defects and early infant
mortality.

Fluoride also damages the brain, both directly and indirectly. Rats given fluoridated water at a dose of 4 ppm develop symptoms resembling attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder. High concentrations of fluoride accumulate in the pineal gland,
which produces serotonin and melatonin. Young girls who drink
fluoridated water reach puberty six months earlier than those who drink
unfluoridated water, which is thought to be a result of reduced
melatonin production. People with Alzheimer's disease have high levels
of aluminum in their brains. Fluoride combines with aluminum in
drinking water and takes it through the blood-brain barrier into the
brain. Dr. Russell Blaylock, MD, a neurosurgeon, spells out in chilling
detail the danger fluoride poses to one's brain and health in general
in his book Health and Nutrition Secrets that can Save Your Life (2002).

And see PhD chemist Joel Kauffman's review of fluoride in the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons.

Indeed, the whole fluoride fad might have been started for reasons a tad different from concern about cavities. As I wrote last August:

The
government allegedly ordered Manhattan Project scientists to
whitewash the toxicity of flouride (flouride is a byproduct in the
production of weapons-grade plutonium and uranium). As Project Censored noted in 1999:

Recently
declassified government documents have shed new light on the
decades-old debate over the fluoridation of drinking water, and have
added to a growing body of scientific evidence concerning the health
effects of fluoride. Much of the original evidence about fluoride, which
suggested it was safe for human consumption in low doses, was
actually generated by “Manhattan Project” scientists in the 1940s. As
it turns out, these officials were ordered by government powers to
provide information that would be “useful in litigation” and that
would obfuscate its improper handling and disposal. The once
top-secret documents, say the authors, reveal that vast quantities of
fluoride, one of the most toxic substances known, were required for
the production of weapons-grade plutonium and uranium. As a result,
fluoride soon became the leading health hazard to bomb program workers
and surrounding communities.

Studies commissioned after
chemical mishaps by the medical division of the “Manhattan Project”
document highly controversial findings. For instance, toxic accidents
in the vicinity of fluoride-producing facilities like the one near
Lower Penns Neck, New Jersey, left crops poisoned or blighted, and
humans and livestock sick. Symptoms noted in the findings included
extreme joint stiffness, uncontrollable vomiting and diarrhea, severe
headaches, and death. These and other facts from the secret documents
directly contradict the findings concurrently published in
scientific journals which praised the positive effects of fluoride.

Regional
environmental fluoride releases in the northeast United States also
resulted in several legal suits against the government by farmers
after the end of World War II, according to Griffiths and Bryson.
Military and public health officials feared legal victories would
snowball, opening the door to further suits which might have kept the
bomb program from continuing to use fluoride. With the Cold War
underway, the New Jersey lawsuits proved to be a roadblock to
America’s already full-scale production of atomic weapons. Officials
were subsequently ordered to protect the interests of the government.

After the war, ... the dissemination of misinformation continued.

Note: While the U.S. is reducing
fluoride levels in water, some have proposed adding it to salt and to
milk. For example, as the International Dental Journal
reported in 2005:

Alternatives to automatic fluoridation by means of water fluoridation are salt fluoridation [and] milk fluoridation
... and the WHO Oral Health Programme is currently undertaking
evaluation of demonstration projects in several countries.

I have to agree.  I live in an area with well water.  When going to the Dentist to get my teeth cleaned they gave me a cup of fluoride to swish in my mouth.  I did.  I vomited on the way home. They gave me a discount the next time I came and I would not take the floride swish again.

Hey waterfall, remember...dentists are like mechanics. Bet they charged your insurance co $600 bucks for it too. Enough said.

(I have rancher relatives who swear that even the natural occurring flouride when in excessively high concentrations will cause their cattle to break bones if they step in the smallest of indentations. Big pain in the ass for them.)

Home Gestapo has a reverse osmosis filter going for about $250.

Installation is fairly easy do-it-yourself (or use a plumber for around $100 fiat bones). Sodium flouride adios.

The only negative is that the manufacturer is GE (your friendly neighborhood warmonger).

Get one before they make diffusion through a semi permeable membrane illegal!

Where Does Fluoride Come From?
By New York State Coalition Opposed to Fluoridation
April 22, 2004

Many dentists and most of the public are unaware their fluoride-laced glass of water is actually spiked with an impure industrial waste product (fluosilicic acid), "scrubbed" from Florida phosphate fertilizer smokestacks.

The filtering was forced by successful lawsuits against fluoride-emitting industries for cattle and crop damage; but the residue also provided a cheap fluoride source critical for the war effort (WWII) as well as for water fluoridation .

According to investigative reporter, Christopher Bryson, in his new book "The Fluoride Deception", fluoride is an essential component of atomic bomb production and was declared a 'strategic and critical' material by the government after World War II, With fluospar, the usual fluoride source, in short supply, they turned to Florida's phosphate industry to recover the industry's captured fluoride. Florida held the world's largest geological deposits of natural phosphate which contain 3 - 4% fluoride.

"In a sweetheart deal these phosphate companies are spared the expense of disposing of this 'fluosilicic acid' in a toxic waste dump. Instead, the acid is sold to municipalities, shipped in rubber-lined tanker trucks to reservoirs across North America and injected into drinking water for the reduction of cavities in children. (So toxic are the contents of the fluoride trucks that, in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attack, authorities were alerted to keep a watchful eye on road shipments of the children's tooth-decay reducer.)" writes Bryson in his heavily referenced book. In return, U.S. strategic planners would have a nearly inexhaustible potential supply of domestic fluoride.

Just thought everyone would like to know where fluoride comes from and see the answer to the important question, QUI BONO?  TO WHO'S BENEFIT?  While we're told we benefit from this, the real benefactor is corporate profits, AGAIN!!!  So nice that we've become the containment apparatus for their toxic byproducts, aren't we just nice accommodating sheep.  BAAAA

"Let me issue and control a nation's money and I care not who writes the laws." Mayer Amschel Rothschild, 1790  ---  I believe all our problems stem from who we've allowed to control our money.  Human error will always and forever remain, but who is in control of our money is something that can be changed or TAKEN BACK.

Fluoride is claimed to be a byproduct of aluminum production. Probably there are many vectors.

Thyroid tissue requires iodine to function, but thyroid iodine receptors are blocked by fluoride, bromine, and cholorine. Untold suffering, illness, and death results, because thyroid function is so critical.

"The function of the thyroid gland is to...convert iodine, found in many foods ...into thyroid hormones: thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). Thyroid cells are the only cells in the body which can absorb iodine. These cells combine iodine and the amino acid tyrosine to make T3 and T4. T3 and T4 are then released into the blood stream and are transported throughout the body where they control metabolism (conversion of oxygen and calories to energy). Every cell in the body depends upon thyroid hormones for regulation of their metabolism. The normal thyroid gland produces about 80% T4 and about 20% T3, however, T3 possesses about four times the hormone "strength" as T4."

http://www.endocrineweb.com/conditions/thyroid/how-your-thyroid-works

In light of the statement above, how could there be any rational reason to ingest or handle fluoride? Short answer, there isn't.

Don't have fluoride dental "treatments" and most important don't allow children to have them; don't use public water supplies that use fluoride, bromine, or chlorine; don't buy mouthwash, toothpaste or other products that contain fluoride, bromine, or chlorine. Laundry bleach may be the only exception because it's a reliable anti-bacterial agent, but use only very little (weak solution) and do not breathe in the fumes. Tea tree oil added to the wash cycle, and using hot water, might be just as effective and without risk.

Sat, 01/08/2011 - 12:52 | 858722 TheMerryPrankster
TheMerryPrankster's picture

So the question that begs to be answered is, "Why reduce the mind control and docification chemical fluoride from the water supplies of the general populace, especially the urban areas since that is where most "treatment' of water occurs?"

Why reduce the passivity of the majority of the populace when they are facing the greatest economic stress seen in our lifetimes? Are the powers that be confounded that the general population has not  rioted yet? They need an excuse to exercise ultimate force and without riots and incivility they cannot justify troops in the streets and martial law.

I'm sure it will take a while for the fluoride levels to decline in the general populace even were the "treatment" of the water supplies to stop tommorrow, so the backlash will take months or years to foment. Still I'd watch for changes in political activness and acts of political and general vandalism - they may be the thermometer in the Butterball turkey - when the red dot pops up - its crushing oppresion time.

Then again it could be all about dental caries, but since when has the government given a fuck about my life let alone my teeth.

General Jack D. Ripper: Mandrake, do you realize that in addition to fluoridating water, why, there are studies underway to fluoridate salt, flour, fruit juices, soup, sugar, milk... ice cream? Ice cream, Mandrake, children's ice cream.

Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: [very nervous] Lord, Jack.

General Jack D. Ripper: You know when fluoridation first began?

Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: I... no, no. I don't, Jack.

General Jack D. Ripper: Nineteen hundred and forty-six. 1946, Mandrake. How does that coincide with your post-war Commie conspiracy, huh? It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? A foreign substance is introduced into our precious bodily fluids without the knowledge of the individual. Certainly without any choice. That's the way your hard-core Commie works.

Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: Uh, Jack, Jack, listen... tell me, tell me, Jack. When did you first... become... well, develop this theory?

General Jack D. Ripper: [somewhat embarassed] Well, I, uh... I... I... first became aware of it, Mandrake, during the physical act of love.

Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: Hmm.

General Jack D. Ripper: Yes, a uh, a profound
sense of fatigue... a feeling of emptiness followed. Luckily I... I was able to interpret these feelings correctly. Loss of essence.

Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: Hmm.

General Jack D. Ripper: I can assure you it has not recurred, Mandrake. Women uh... women sense my power and they seek the life essence. I, uh... I do not avoid women, Mandrake.

Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: No.

General Jack D. Ripper: But I... I do deny them my essence.

But government through EPA stand downs will not allow clear labeling of GM foods so it is becoming a bit of a fait accompli on that front.

Here's an alarmist link that doesn't mince words on GM the food supply:

http://www.cleanairandwater.net/GM-FOOD.html

WRT fluoride I expect it is the primary culprit in Alzheimers and osteoporosis as the Fluoride ion is so small and a reactive leaching agent that binds to heavy metals, inserting aluminum and removing calcium in those diseases, respectively.

Expect a spike in liver cancer, pancreatic cancer and diabetes in the herd with the surreptitious forced feeding of GM into food stuffs.

Thanks for the article GW. This has been on my mind for a couple of years.  Deadly stuff.  This spring a whole house water filter with a bone char tank to remove fluoride is going in.  Better than RO because it does not remove everything.  Well better suited for a whole houses water supply anyways.  RO has a place, but I need F free water for cooking, cleaning, bathing, and irrigation for my garden, so a whole house with fluoride removal works out better.  RO is just not possible for this amount of water.  Our RO systems at work cannot put out that kind of output.

"Better than RO because it does not remove everything" - You make a very cogent point because much of our mineral intake used to come from water, but not now, and many people are mineral deficient...a whole other critical problem.

If cities gave tax abatements for point of use water filters that didn't take out minerals but filtered out pathogens, no fluorite, bromine, or chlorine would be needed. Everyone would change their filter as often as required and probably would be a lot healthier.

The halogen group is made up as follows:
                                                         Relative
Halogen                                     Atomic Weight
Flourine                                          19.
Chlorine                                              35.5
Bromine                                              80.
Iodine                                                127.

The critical activity of any one of these four halogens is in inverse proportion to its atomic weight. This means that any one of the four can displace the element with a higher atomic weight, but cannot displace an element with a lower atomic weight. For example, fluorine can displace chlorine, bromine and iodine because fluorine has a lower atomic weight than the other three. Similarly, chlorine can displace bromine and iodine because they both have a higher atomic weight. Likewise, bromine can displace iodine from the body because iodine has a higher atomic weight. But a reverse order is not possible. A knowledge of this well-known chemical law brings us to a consideration of the addition of chlorine to our drinking water as a purifying agent. We secure a drinking water that is harmful to the body not because of its harmful germ content but because the chlorine content now causes the body to lose the much-needed iodine.more here:http://www.lugols.com

Halogens! Yay!

F is just very deadly.  Rat poison, sarin nerve gas, etc. All Fluoride-based.

Cl is deadly.  Chlorine was used in WWI as a battlefield antipersonel weapon.  Kewl eh?

Chlorination of water leads to levels of Cl in the water that are harmful as well as disinfectant by-products (chlorinated small organics) which are mutagenic as heck.  Nasty on the parts per billion level (which is where they are regulated).

If you have chlorinated water, it is not enough to filter your tap you need to filter your bath and you should filter the house, so your clothes are not getting eaten.  Because you wear those things and that eats you.

I recommend a Pelican water filter with a 2-stage (sediment and activated charcoal stack) the charcoal takes out the Cl and the chlorinated organics. (I do not own, invest in, or receive moneys from Pelican, it is the one that I use.)

lol, I might send in my presentations!  This is very basic to health. LOL, that would be funny wouldn't it.

great post! one reason so many people are on low thyroid medication (synthroid) is that the critical element iodine has been replaced with the other halogens. I supplement daily with Lugol's solution.

ps - do not think that iodized salt will do the trick. it won't. people, start researching this stuff and educate yourselves before the net neutrality takes this info away. you have only one "health" and you - not your doctor - is responsible for it.

I have lectured many times on Fluoride in drinking water and use http://fluoridealert.org/ as a handy reference for people who want to learn more.

Sodium fluoride is used, but only in 10% of the fluoridation program in the US, the vast majority use hydrofluosilicic acid.  This toxic fluid is a product of the synthetic fertilizer plants that dot the Florida (much humor in having the Fluoride generating plants in Florida) coast line.  This stack emission is scrubbed out and place in tanker trucks.  If it were to be disposed of as a toxic waste it would be classified as a highly toxic material, but instead it is dumped directly into your municipal water suppy as a health additive.

There are *no* scientific studies that link fluoridation with a reduction in dental caries (called cavities someplaces).  And fluoride, the molecule, wants one thing to make it much more stable, an electron.  To do that it will grab an electron from whatever it is next to and exert forces on its area in order to get what it wants.  That makes it the second most deadly element in the periodic chart, the most toxic element being mercury.

Basically fluoride does one thing: it kills life.

On teeth it acts as a bacteriacide and kills decay causing bacteria, of course it also kills tooth cells and the enamel on your teeth causing dental fluorosis.

In general fluoride is hard to remove from your diet without being very vigilant, because it is in everything.  Most food stuffs have a fluoride somewhere in their process.  Sodas, cereals, milk, etc are all fluoridated.  (check out fluoridealert.org)

Where does this all come from?  From pesticides, whose active element is ..... fluoride, of course!  Cryolite, Sodium Aluminum Fluoride, is a very widely used pesticide in the US and other countries around the world.  And it is not the only one by a long shot, there are many others, all based in fluoride as the main active ingredient.

So that's how the milk gets fluoridated, because the feed was sprayed with fluoride in the pesticide.

It has been touched on in the comments above that fluoride is a neurotoxin and is used as an additive to the general population's drinking water, not as a health additive, because it isn't one (see fluoridealert.org [no scientific studies linking fluoridation to reduction in dental caries [cavities]), it is used to make the population more "managable."  It was found (by conscious experimentation on prison populations in Nazi Germany, Soviet Russia, and Soviet US) that an addition of fluoride would decrease unrest and make folks docile.  So this principle was expanded for use in entire populations.

And because fluoride has neurological activity it is a major player in psychopharmaceuticals, like Prozac and Zoloft.  The active molecule delivered in each case is .... fluoride, which is delivered to a specific location where it ... kills brain cells.  Therapeutic!  Hah!

There is much more to the fluoride story, from its genesis to its present day pervasiveness (baby water in big Box stores!), and I suggest fluoridealert.org for those who are interested.  That site covered all of the above topic areas and many others.

great post LeBalance, ++clarity points!

Most pronounced damage was seen in animals that got the fluoride in conjunction with aluminum. The pathological changes found in the brain tissue of the animals were similar to the alterations found in the brains of people with Alzheimer's disease and dementia. The authors speculate that fluoride enables aluminum to cross the blood-brain barrier. These results are especially disturbing because of the low dose level of fluoride that shows the toxic effect in rats - rats are more resistant to fluoride than humans."

given the elevated levels of aluminium (& barium, strontium, etc.) being found due to "weather modification" chemical spraying, it's more important than ever to pay attention to "government enhanced" environ-mental activities.

thanks, and when finished with water additives there is the vaccine discussion (notwithstanding the recent vaccine autism research fraud)

this is a good site

I agree that is a good site.

Another general link is www.whale.to and for giggles

look at the introduction on Measles Vaccinations in 1968 and how it BY ITSELF is supposed to have eradicated Measles.  Improvements to Hygiene (up to 1968) had nothing to do with it.
