“Stay and fight”: Is this realistic?
Before leaving New York, I was enjoying a perfectly nice afternoon
yesterday walking around the Upper West side. When I got to Lincoln
center, roughly at the corner of Broadway and W 62nd Street, reality set
in.
No fewer than ten NYPD storm troopers were ‘patrolling’ the sidewalk
outside in full combat gear: Kevlar helmet, flak vest, semi-automatic
9mm sidearm, and Colt model 933 with M900 foregrip and M68 aimpoint. A
few of them had M203 variety grenade launchers fitting snugly underneath
the barrel.
And to what did we owe the deployment of such unnecessary firepower?
An invasion of the Canadian hordes? Terrorists on the loose? No. Some
visiting politician… clearly an individual who feels important enough to
merit an intimidating death squad in his vicinity.
This is the nature of the system. Police are armed to the teeth… and
while their official marketing slogan may be to ‘keep people safe’,
their real function is to be the protectors and enforcers for the
political class, all while keeping the people in check so that the know
who’s boss.
On this note, we received a lot of comments this week from readers
who reject the idea of considering greener pastures overseas and instead
choose to “stay and fight.”
Reader Jay K, for instance, wrote that “sooner or later you’re going
to have to fight. It might as well be in your own home, city,
neighborhood, and country.”
This ‘stay and fight’ mentality does seem incredibly noble. It
invokes images of Paul Revere and the original patriots standing their
ground in battle against the red coat British forces. Unfortunately, the
world just doesn’t work that way anymore.
There is no real enemy to fight… no clearly defined opposing force
conveniently dressed in a different color like the rival baseball team.
The battle is one of ideas.
At its simplest, the conflict comes down between those who believe
that government is the problem, and those who believe that government is
the solution. Most people are brainwashed statists who unquestioningly
hold the latter as their ethos.
And then there is the big faceless void of government itself…
politicians, bureaucrats, low-level workers, regulatory agencies, etc.
We’re not talking about a single individual here, but an entire
institution.
It begs the question– for all the ‘stay and fight’ people, who exactly are you fighting? And more importantly, how?
Of all the hundreds of similar notes we’ve received from people who
claim they are going to ‘stay and fight’, I am still waiting for one…
just one single email… from someone telling me exactly how they plan on
doing that.
Are you going to go to the polls and kick the bums out? Go right
ahead. If you can convince the majority of other voters (most of whom
probably don’t share your ideology), then you’re just going to vote in
another set of bums.
Politicians are politicians because they either (a) are attracted to
power, and/or (b) think that government is the solution, not the
problem. Replacing one set with another is hardly a credible course of
action.
What else is the plan– armed conflict in the streets? I don’t
understand this fantasy. The people are going to arm themselves and join
together for an Old West style shootout against the police, the people
will win, and then a new nation will be rebuilt espousing limited
government principles?
It sounds like a great movie… but pinning your hopes on being able to
win a revolutionary style victory against a military police state that
has superior tactics, firepower, and combat experience is simply
unrealistic.
Besides, real turmoil in the west is just getting started. Right now
the conflict is in Greece and Spain. It will spread to Italy, Belgium,
UK, etc., and then finally to the US.
When it does, people will find out first hand that the police have absolutely no problems turning into violent thugs… and this police state grows stronger every day.
Truthfully, there is no way to fight a faceless enemy. The government
is essentially the same as your credit card company– no single
individual or front, just a collection of various departments and
bureaucracies.
What do you do when your credit card company raises your fees, takes
your money, provides you with poor service? Do you petition for change?
Do you try and convince fellow credit card holders to demand new
management? Do you stalk the customer service center in Sioux City,
Iowa? No, of course not. You simply get a new card.
This is ultimately the solution that I’m advocating, and I’m here to
tell you that there are a lot of great cards out there in the world.
If you recognize that the trend is bad, at least have a plan to
safeguard yourself, your family, your livelihood, and your assets…
something that extends beyond the unrealistic (voting the bums out) and
the mythical (doing battle in the streets).
It’s time to reject bombastic fantasies and check in to reality. Make
a grounded appraisal of the situation, and if you decide to stick
around, great. Just make sure you have strong safeguards in place, a
plan to execute if you ever deem it necessary, and most of all, a clear
idea of your breaking point.
After all, the boiling frog only survives when it senses danger and jumps out.

I got up this morning with air conditioning in the bedroom. I made coffee with running water in the house and an electric coffee pot. Went to the store and bought some stuff after being ripped off at the gas station.
Having been in Watts up close and personal, I don’t think I will burn my house or the store or the gas station. However, I will try to help run the Wall Street thugsters and their Washington criminal friends over the cliff if I can.
For one thing I can stay as well informed as possible and inform others. ZH and other information stations are a must. We Do need to keep voting the sons of bitches out of office—over and over again until we can find an honest person. We Do need to take control by being involved and not letting politicians, lawyers, DAs, police departments, or judges run roughshod over us.
I am in one of those battles now and I am not gonna let the bastards win. Life is not easy and fighting is not easy. But there are ways to skin a cat besides going to the street. The vote and the court room are a couple to condsider.
As many have already articulated, starving the beast is THE best option but not the only one. The conditions for the success of the people are slowly being laid by the powers that be--even they do not realize it yet.
I grow weary of folks posting comments about why "nothing has happened yet" or "how much is it going to take" before a move is made. I think we all know the answer to those rhetorical questions: 1.) People have a lot to lose going it alone; and 2.) No firm tripwires have yet been crossed.
Sure, the Feds are examining the edges of how far they can push but they are careful to not cross that line.
Real tripwires are starvation, mass unemployment, anarchy, and homeless. I submit we are pushing the edges of all of those right now but we haven't yet crossed them thanks to the printing presses.
There are millions of Americans who will stand up and resist when the time is right. I know I will.
One other thing: All of those paramilitary cops will walk after one paycheck is missed.
they will walk .........right into your home and take what they need.
you will bend over and give it or die.
Police in NYC have gotten notably more arrogant since 911, even more so through the Bush/Cheney years, and even more now than ever.
They speak and you are supposed to tremble. They can stop anyone they don't like on the street and they do. They like to make embarrassing scenes. They like to yell, swagger and harass. They like driving the huge mobil enforcement unit buses and trucks into an area. They have a new mobile unit capped with a 60 foot tower with cameras that can examine each person in a huge crowd and film them like Big Brother watching you. On parade days they rent miles of chain link fencing to keep people corralled.
And there is no recourse. Even cases where they have shot, killed and even tortured the wrong suspect they get off 99% of the time. Worst case, the city pays a settlement.
it is becoming more and more a kill or be killed situation..
and the good news is! since 9-11 and the hiring spree to protect America happened.. the police have gotten.. wait for it.. wait for it.. more stupider!

wait and the best part is.. if you have a complaint.. and you take the complaint to the FDLE (see above) they will send you back to the local where the incident took place. If there are people who are illiterate: mime and flash cards are acceptable. Illiterates should be put on probation for one year before being allowed to handle a dealy fire arm in public or any other common weapons. I am a New Yorker, but I have lived all over the place.
As much as I have to say about what is currently ailing the US, I am very hard pressed when it comes to naming that utopia of freedom that some people think offers an escape.
There are many places where you can go up river, but sooner or later it all catches up. The planet gets smaller every day.
I haven't been everywhere though, so someone please edify me if they know of such a place.
I haven't been everywhere neither...But of all the places I've been to, I am hard pressed too to name a truly free place people can escape to, utopia or otherwise.

A lot of it is really dependent on the kind of lifestyle wants to live. If someone is looking for a place that is the equivalent of NYC without the police presence, they're going to be disappointed because there is no such place. Living in a place that populated and dense comes with a price...and an almost militaristic police presence is part of that price. So then it becomes a question of "is it worth it". I lived in NYC for years. I got to a point where the lifestyle no longer served my desires so I left.
So back to the question: Is there a "utopia of freedom" out there? In a word...No. But there are levels. For example, are there places where one can smoke a joint in peace without the threat of doing hard time? Yes. Are there places where you can drive a car without wearing a seatbelt and not be ticketed? Yes. Are there places out there that do not have armies engaged in a campaign of world wide conquest? Yes. And no those are not the only three things I can think of, they are just small examples. i don't want to turn this into an epic length post...but I think you get the picture.
There is no "perfect" place. No place of "absolute freedom"...but does that mean there is no place that is a better place to live than America?
You are obviously a smart and creative person Banzai. While I realize that leaving NYC is tantamount to having a limb amputated for anyone who has lived there a long time...it's not the end of the world. And the same goes for leaving America...there are alternatives to the police state that this place has become. And it doesn't take a genius to figure it out.
I'm on the other side of the world from NYC in Thailand and this place is no utopia of freedom. There are no new worlds for fed up ex-pats to sail to and start a new government with safeguards to prevent the old bad things from happening again. But one of the best things about here is their government is still small and the people disregard a lot of the laws and it seems to work good. But indeed there is no perfect escape place. Indeed the planet gets smaller until we develop warp drive engines to infect a new planet with humanity. Our choices now are limited to the "best less worse" places, and this country qualifies in the top 10. They grow almost everything here and no matter what happens when the SHTF, these people stick together.
Please put my vote into your future "Best Less Worse" top ten country list.

Here's an idea that I will throw out to ZH land for abuse. One way the govt system corrupts is in its ability to grow. Can that happen in a country whose system does not allow any and all public servants the vote? If you are political leadership, military, police, fire, basically, if you get your paycheck from the govt through the people you relinquish the right to vote.

Stay or go. One of the most divisive issues out there. Neither choice is implicitly correct-but everybody needs make it based on more than emotions.
That's the problem, for everybody still living in the formerly free world. Due to the array of poisons and gadgetry being used to do everything from modify the weather(chemtrails, HAARP etc) to modify people's brains(CIA\NSA\MI5 sponsored predictive programming & other pys-ops) it's simply becoming harder and harder to THINK! And rather ironically, it's almost impossible to convince anybody of that fact until they get out of the EuroMerik prison zone and deprogram. The changes are incremental, and by design, almost unnoticeable.
In the couple of years I have been writing back to the inmates of the DHS\TSA theme park formerly known as America, I've noticed very little willingness on their part to simply take stock of the situation through simple tools of analysis that we all *used to!?!* have at our disposal. Best example I can think of is this - in the last summer before I hopped the pot, the almost complete absence of bright BLUE sky sunny days was one of the things I hated most. I can remember asking people if they could remember what it was like when the sun shone through without that thin film of fake cloud cover - there may indeed be kids born in the last 20 years who may not even know the difference!
Living now outside of the daily tracks in the sky from the flight paths of the barium\aluminium poison pumpers has done wonders for my health and my state of mind. I offer up the blue skies thing as a metaphor for viewing your life in relation to POLICE STATE AMERICA. It's still your choice, though for how much longer I hesitate to guess.
Staying or going is as serious a decision as one is ever likely to make. To do so, with sufficient information at your disposal and the clarity of mind to analysis it is getting harder by the day. Thing I remember most of the final months of wrestling with the issue was the lack of helpful information about how and where to jump. Simon Black may not be your cup of tea, but anyone delivering any information about choices and alternatives for those not really interested in a final firefight in a Khe Sanh type of fortified outpost should welcome the chance of broadening their horizons before the no fly lists are extended to the entire population minus the banksters and their elected minions.
Oh, and since this is a financial blog, please do ask yourself how much longer you think it will be that they allow you to move your PMs with you if you do decide to go and the TSA will allow you? The writing is on the wall for those able to see it. Currency controls are next.

Good idea. There are very few politicians and organizations I trust, but from all accounts Ron Paul and GATA deserve it. This one time, last century, I was coming into the country from Mexico with a pregnant wife and a bunch of weed in the trunk. When my car (a cherry Gran Sport) was selected for further inspection, I took to prayer/bargaining: "If I get out of this, I will never leave the country again." Not sure why such a bargain seemed appropriate. The dog ignored the weed laden tent bag in the trunk, and we got home with no problems. So now I'm in to the bitter end.
Make friends, form strong neighborhoods. Everything's local...until it isn't, anyhow...

If there ever was going to be a resistance to tyranny in the US, it should have happened long ago. People continue to say, "people are getting mad and they are not going to take it anymore." Well people have been saying that for 20 years. Every time that the line in the sand is crossed, American's simply make a new line rather than actually standing up and doing something about it. The most people will ever do is complain about it online and to their friends.
The combination of apathy with a lack of opportunity to change the system makes the situation hopeless.
The "stay and fight" crowd simple refuses to recognize this situation as their judgement has been clouded by nationalism which is programmed into American's from birth.
I was able to wake up from the cloud of nationalistic fervor and take action to improve my situation and remove myself and family from a hopeless situation. Two years ago I moved to New Zealand as a permanent resident and have never looked back. Having been here for a while I can without a doubt report that the grass is greener on the other side of the fence. I am taxed less, there is no police state, there is less violence and crime, the country can feed itself many times over, we do not have a big bullseye on us for getting involved in countless overseas interventions, there is virtually no government coruption, I have less interference from the government in my life, there is virtually no GMO poisoning me, etc. etc. etc. - the list could go on.
We have run into a lot of people from other countries who are living here or just visiting. One thing that is very apparent is the nationalistic "stay and fight" mentality is only something that exists with American's.
Personally, I think this is the result of the American culture which continues to perpetuate the lie that the US is without the best place to live in the world combined with the fact that most American's that consider themselves to be patriots are actually nationalists. There are a lot of other contributing factors but those are the big ones. The average American is much less traveled or knowledgeable about life overseas than the average NZer, Aussie, or European. They have an unrealistic view of American "greatness", America's role in the world, and most importantly, how the rest of the world view's America.
Right now you are only seeing a trickle of people jumping ship from the US. As things get worse, more and more people will become aware of the situation for what it really is and try to leave. The number of American's moving down here to NZ has doubled as a percentage of the total number of immigrants from when we first moved here. At some point, the doors to NZ and other locations will be shut as the economic situation worsens. The US is and will continue to make moving from the US and moving money offshore painful until the point it is banned.

Since moving to Seattle from Windsor, Ontario eight years ago my brother has put on about 60 pounds and breathes heavily after walking up the front steps to get in his house. I have been back in the US for five weeks after living in SA for twenty years. I came back because I reasoned that this should be the time for some movement towards solidarity and self-lessness; I have been waiting for such a time for fifty years.

As someone who lives outside the US, I would never choose to live there. My government may not be perfect but it is responsive. My police may not be perfect, but every now and then one gets prosecuted in court for assaulting or killing an innocent citizen. Not every time, but often enough to remind them who they serve. My taxes may be higher than yours, but I get as much healthcare as I want when I need it and never get a bill.
As for those above saying the police will support the people, they should go back and watch the footage from New Orleans. The rest of the world was watching, and we could not believe that Americans in authority would shoot the victims of a natural catastrophe as they tried to flee and find safety. Amazing as it must sound, I don't get molested by a TSA type at the airport (actually there is absolutely no security on domestic flights), the country here does not aspire to become a police state, the economy is doing reasonable well compared to the US, I am not poisoned every day with GMO laced foods, and for all of that I get taxed less.
My family recently visited and was absolutely stunned by how good life was here compared to what they were experiencing in the US.

The most mind f'n blowing thing is people think it just all goes away without this control. They don't know the total wealth effect of combined labor force. So much is drained off they know not the fruits, and as technology advances they seem intent on downsizing the herd of "American" stock they currently hold.

We continually discuss - endlessly - the symptoms of our problems/issues, but we refuse to acknowledge or discuss the source of those problems/issues. It is as if we believe if we don't acknowledge it, it will go away. It won't, it will continue to get worse.
The Simons and Tylers of the world, and all the other national commentators, do our Country, nor we citizens any favor in also refusing to openly discuss the source. Without open discussion, there can be no 'acknowledgement', no national debate and most importantly, no public decision as to whether this should continue.
I have always believed we should 'use the system to fix the system' - at this point those seeking to destroy our national sovereignty are doing just that, and quite successfully with little to no opposition, primarily because there is no national acknowledgement it is even happening or how it is happening.

Everyone knows the Great Depression was during a time when 90% of the people in America lived in rural areas. Now the opposite is true, and that 90% live in urban areas. The next collapse will make the Great Depression look like a party therefore.

So if boots are on the ground in a command center attempting to bleed out the literal crumbs of the plebes they become a target.

There is a great paper written when the Consitution was enacted. In that paper, it says that the Government should be abolished should it be very burdensome to the people. I consider the TSA for example to be very invasive against the Baby, children and old people as well as those with medical issues in full view of the entire airport. All of this while Terrorists quietly move here to the homeland and plot acts such as the Ft Hood Shootings or the World Trade center bombings and later attacks in 911.

It would be best not to do another Civil War. The majority would be all too happy to watch their wives and children be raped, literally raped, by TSA agents to make sure they have no bombs in their body cavities. When I went out into the world and talked to real, average, every day Americans I realized...these people don't deserve freedom. Nor do they want it.
We few that value liberty and have become aware of the fraud and corruption in the global economic/political systems cannot do this for the sheep. We can't give them that which they do not desire - freedom. They want to work for the TSA and rape children and the elderly day in and day out. Hell, it'll even make them feel patriotic and they'll brag to their friends how they work for the DHS as some kind of quasi-police-rapist-rent-a-pig.
So my current plan? Keep my head down until I am personally affected (one VIPR team stop on the highway, one forced grope on the subway, etc.) and I'm gone. I'm done. I'll be out of the country within 2 months and renouncing citizenship shortly thereafter.
But for now this is all hyperbole. I have not been personally affected in the slightest. TSA raping everyone? I stopped flying. Random bag checks on the subway? I stopped carrying bags on the subway. So I'll collect my $80 an hour from the government (yes, the same government that is raping your children), enjoy life, and if this ever affects me, I'll leave the sheep to their desired fate - a safe and comfortable life in a high tech authoritarian police state. The people neither want nor deserve liberty as I and a small minority of other Americans understand it.

Scorched earth policy is much easier to do in an invironment with little diversity. (like the N-American continent with it's agriculture and cultural homogenity) Northern America with the faillout from fukushima, and threat of nuclear disaster right at home, as well as a near complete dependance on Monsanto for food, does not strike me as a favourable place to win or even survive an a-symmetric war. They'll just remove the food supply, and watch everyone fight themselves to death over the last scraps.
Here in europe the situation is still pretty much "normalised" as you'd expect from the USA in the seventies, or eightties. There are cultural and economical differences that make a swift swoop rounding up the population (shock and awe) nearly impossible. And that's what I expect to happen in N-America: A sudden change that will shake up and confuse, and will make further defiance much more difficult. Are you going to stick around to watch it happen?
A tactical retreat is NOT a defeat, it can deal a blow to the enemy from withdrawing from the fight wasting his resources, and at the same time strengthen a foothold that is more easily defendable.
