9/11 – A Fourth Turning Perspective
The four turnings comprise a
quaternal social cycle of growth, maturation, entropy, and death (and
rebirth). In a spring like High, a society fortifies and builds and
converges in an era of promise. In a summer like Awakening, it dreams
and plays and exults in an era of euphoria. In an autumnal Unraveling,
it harvests and consumes and diverges in an era of anxiety. In a
hibernal Crisis, it focuses and struggles and sacrifices in an era of
survival. When the saeculum is in motion, therefore, no long human
lifetime can go by without a society confronting its deepest spiritual
and worldly needs. - The Fourth Turning
Nine years after the attack on the World Trade Center the mood of the
country has transformed dramatically. I watched the horror on a TV in a
conference room at work with my colleagues. I remember being in a daze
for a few days after the attack. When it became unambiguous that Osama
bin Laden masterminded the attacks and was being protected by the
Taliban in Afghanistan, I wanted justice. The entire world rallied
around the US. There was worldwide support for the United States’ right
to attack Afghanistan and kill the perpetrators.
In the days immediately following the attacks, there were many
memorials and vigils around the world. In addition, pictures were placed
all over Ground Zero. A witness described being unable to “get away
from faces of innocent victims who were killed. Their pictures are
everywhere, on phone booths, street lights, walls of subway stations.
Everything reminded me of a huge funeral, people quiet and sad, but also
very nice. Before, New York gave me a cold feeling; now people were
reaching out to help each other.”
There was a feeling of unity in the country for a brief shining
moment. If the year had been 2007, rather than 2001, that unity may have
been sustained. Anyone who had read Strauss & Howe’s 1997 book The Fourth Turning was likely
trying to figure out if the 9/11 attacks were the trigger for the
Fourth Turning. But it was too soon. As Strauss & Howe relate in the
book, a turning can be sudden or subtle:
“The gateway to a new turning can be
obvious and dramatic (like the 1929 Stock Crash) or subtle and gradual
(like 1984’s Morning in America). It usually occurs two to five years
after a new generation of children starts being born. The tight link
between turning gateways and generational boundaries enables each
archetype to fill an entire phase-of-life just as the mood of an old
turning grows stale and feels ripe for replacement with something new.”
Unraveling Culture
The Unraveling, which had begun in 1984, had not run its course by
September 11, 2001. Turnings generally last for 20 to 25 years. In 2001,
we were only 17 years into the Unraveling. The mood of the country had
not developed to the point where a consensus could be built to address a
national Crisis. We had been attacked, but our very existence as a
nation had not been threatened. The 9/11 attacks heightened the feeling
of anxiety in the country and put us on the path towards a great Crisis.
Strauss & Howe explained the phases of an Unraveling in the
book:
“An UNRAVELING begins as a
society-wide embrace of the liberating cultural forces set loose by the
Awakening. People have had their fill of spiritual rebirth, moral
protest, and lifestyle experimentation. Content with what they have
become individually, they vigorously assert an ethos of pragmatism,
self-reliance, laissez faire, and national (or sectional or ethnic)
chauvinism.
While personal satisfaction is high,
public trust ebbs amid a fragmenting culture, harsh debates over values,
and weakening civic habits. The sense of guilt (which rewards
principle and individuality) reaches its zenith. As moral debates brew,
the big public arguments are over ends, not means. Decisive public
action becomes very difficult, as community problems are deferred. Wars
are fought with moral fervor but without consensus or follow-through.
Eventually, cynical alienation
hardens into a brooding pessimism. During a High, obliging individuals
serve a purposeful society, and even bad people get harnessed to
socially constructive tasks; during an Unraveling, an obliging society
serves purposeful individuals, and even good people find it hard to
connect with their community. The approaching specter of public
disaster ultimately elicits a mix of paralysis and apathy that would
have been unthinkable half a saeculum earlier. People can now feel, but
collectively can no longer do.” - The Fourth Turning
The Clinton years were divisive and cynical. You knew the country was
adrift, but no one could harness the power of the realm to take on
the impending challenges. The nation divided into Blue states and Red
States. The Moral Majority raged against the Godlessness of the country.
The 2000 Presidential election was an example of a country deeply
divided, fragmented and unable to agree on anything. The election was
essentially a draw, and a partisan Supreme Court picked the winner. It
seemed like the country was divided as never before. But, a student of
history would have recognized the same issues, dilemmas and foul mood in
the 1760s, 1850s and 1920s. Strauss and Howe documented the prior
Unravelings in US history:
“The mood of the current Culture Wars
era seems new to nearly every living American but is not new to
history. Around World War I, America steeped in reform and
fundamentalism amidst a floodtide of crime, alcohol, immigration,
political corruption, and circus trials. The 1850s likewise simmered
with moral righteousness, shortening tempers, and multiplying
“mavericks.” It was a decade, says historian David Donald, in which
“the authority of all government in America was at a low point.”
Entering the 1760s, the colonies felt rejuvenated in spirit but reeled
from violence, mobs, insurrections, and paranoia over the corruption of
official authority.” - The Fourth Turning
The country went to war with a moral fervor, which quickly
dissipated. There was no follow through, as bin Laden was allowed to
escape. The appearance of unity in the country was wiped away with the
invasion of Iraq under false pretenses. Americans became more cynical
after 9/11. Instead of addressing the visible financial catastrophe set
in motion by political promises made decades ago, Americans deluded
themselves with visions of faux wealth created by the Federal Reserve
inflating the largest bubble in history. President Bush did not demand
shared sacrifice after 9/11. He instructed the American people to defeat
the terrorists by leasing a Mercedes SUV; buying a 6,000 sq ft
McMansion with 10 rooms, granite countertops, Jacuzzis, and a home
theater, financed with 0% down; and taking your ultimate dream vacation
in the Caribbean paid for with one of your 10 credit cards.
While Americans binged on credit and ignored the disastrous future
that awaited them with the approaching Fourth Turning, a brooding
pessimism began to blanket the country. A national paralysis overtook
the populace regarding vital issues. The popping of the housing bubble
from 2006 through 2008 revealed massive fraud on the part of Wall Street
bankers; corrupt politicians, bought off by corporations, in Washington
DC; inept bungling regulators; millions of morons wanting to be led
astray; and a Federal Reserve that provided the cheap credit to fuel the
mass delusion. The complete meltdown of the financial system in
September 2008 will be viewed as the catalyst for the current Fourth
Turning. The transition from Unraveling to Crisis has transpired.
Crisis Deepening
“A CRISIS arises in response to
sudden threats that previously would have been ignored or deferred, but
which are now perceived as dire. Great worldly perils boil off the
clutter and complexity of life, leaving behind one simple imperative:
The society must prevail. This requires a solid public consensus,
aggressive institutions, and personal sacrifice.” - The Fourth Turning
The current Crisis is deepening day by day. The ninth anniversary of
9/11 is revealing the dramatic mood change of the country. In the days
following 9/11 there was little anger against the religion of Islam.
President Bush went to a mosque and declared that Islam was a religion
of peace. He said forcefully that anyone who attacked Arab or Muslim
Americans in some kind of twisted attempt at revenge for 9/11 would be
met with the full force of American law. Most right minded Americans
agreed with President Bush. After 9 years of waging wars against
Muslims, in which victory is unachievable, Americans are weary, agitated
and ready to lash out.
Contrast the reaction of Americans after 9/11 with the recent issue
of converting a Burlington Coat factory store into a Muslim community
center two blocks from Ground Zero. The mainstream media has been full
of vitriol and anger regarding an issue that would have gotten no press
in 2002. There have been protests, counter-protests, accusations and
lies spread across the airwaves. The anti-Muslim feeling in the country
is palpable. A nut-job pastor with a flock of 50 people threatens to
burn the Koran and sets off a firestorm across the globe. The reaction
to this inconsequential knucklehead would have been non-existent in
2002. The mood of the country has clearly changed. The anger building
against the ruling elite on Wall Street and in Washington DC is real.
Average Americans feel betrayed by politicians, bankers and corporate
America. The Tea party movement is a reflection of that anger. The
country certainly hasn’t reached a consensus about which direction the
country needs to move, but we are still in the early stages of the
Fourth Turning. A threat to our very existence will reveal itself in the
near future and generate the consensus necessary to meet the threat.
What is beyond a doubt is that the country is facing extreme peril as
it tries to maneuver its way through an economic Depression, a looming
peak oil crisis, unresolved long-term fiscal obligations, and antagonism
from countries throughout the world. The cycles of history do not
reveal the exact nature of the Crisis ahead, but previous Crisis periods
give us a flavor of what to expect. Based on our previous Crises
periods and knowing which national issues have been ignored for decades,
the likely threats to confront the nation over the next decade include:
- Continued reduction in the national wealth of Americans as home
prices drop another 20% and the stock market loses another 30% of its
value. - A National Debt approaching $20 trillion within the next 5 years,
potentially resulting in massive interest expense payments and/or a
collapse of the USD. - When the Central Bank experiment in fiat currency fails within the next 5 years, a hyperinflationary depression is likely.
- The demographic headwinds of a rapidly aging population combined
with the gutting of industrial America by corporate chieftains insures
that the American economy will be stuck in low gear. The result will be a
steady decline in the American standard of living. - The diminishing supply of cheap, easily accessible oil will
fundamentally change American society. The entire suburban sprawl
existence of America, with 260 million automobiles and food trucked from
1,500 miles to grocery stores will disappear practically overnight. - The wrenching changes which will be required to localize, combined
with the loss of wealth, will likely lead to social chaos, possible
revolt, and the use of U.S. military forces against citizens of the
United States. Geographic fragmentation of the country is a distinct
possibility. - The desperate need for oil will provoke wars for precious resources.
The Middle East is likely to turn into a battlefield. The combatants
are unknown at this point, but China and Russia are likely to be
involved. With the proliferation of nuclear weapons, an escalation could
lead to a catastrophic worldwide conflagration.
Fourth Turnings always sweep away the old order and replace it with a
new order. There is no guarantee that the new order will be better. It
could be far worse. As we honor those who lost their lives on September
11, 2001 we need to brace ourselves for the storm ahead. The clouds are
gathering and the time of great sacrifice is approaching. There are no
guarantees from God that the United States will always prevail. We have
gone far off course this time. I trust we can rise to the challenge.

Obviously, things could go horribly wrong – the possibilities ranging
from a nuclear exchange to incurable plagues, from terrorist anarchy to
high-tech dictatorship. We should not assume that Providence will always
exempt our nation from the irreversible tragedies that have overtaken
so many others: not just temporary hardship, but debasement and total
ruin. Losing in the next Fourth Turning could mean something
incomparably worse. It could mean a lasting defeat from which our

A review of the U.S. government reports on the September 11, 2001, destruction of the WTC twin towers in New York City will reveal that even though NIST (National Institute for Standards and Technology) was tasked by the U.S. Congress to provide a complete explanation for the unprecedented collapses of these buildings, the authors admittedly stopped their analysis at the “initiation of collapse” where they say “the building was poised to collapse”. Only half of one page of this 10,000-page report is spent on the actual collapse; And it merely speculates that “the structure below the level of collapse initiation offered minimal resistance to the falling building mass” and that it “came down essentially in free fall as seen in the videos”. NIST’s responseto aformal Request for Correction filed by this author and five other concerned citizens stated “we are unable to provide a full explanation of the total collapse.”
An impartial review of the available public evidence concerning the three high-rise building collapses reveals that the government engineers behind the report have omitted and obscured much of the relevant evidence. At the AE911Truth February 19, 2010, press conference in San Francisco, we enumerated some of these:
At all Three High-Rises
1. NIST provided conflicting information about the fire severity and duration in all three skyscrapers.
2. NIST’s John Gross evidently lied about the evidence of molten iron/steel.
3. NIST refused to test for explosives residue or even consider the explosive demolition hypothesis in its report when explosive demolition was the most likely hypothesis.
4. Neither NIST nor FEMA followed the National Fire Protection Association 921 Guidelines for Fire and Explosion investigation (NFPA 921), which specifies that looking for residue from explosives is the standard procedure for fire and explosion investigations where there is “high order damage” (as there obviously was at the WTC). The guidelines specifically suggest testing for thermite when there is evidence of extremely high temperatures such as molten iron or steel(also evident at WTC).

5. NIST did not discuss the finding, documented in FEMA’s Building Performance Assessment Report , of steel beams exhibiting evidence of an extremely high temperature corrosion attack – including “intergranular melting, rapid oxidation, and sulfidation”. The New York Times called this finding “perhaps the deepest mystery uncovered in the investigation.”
6. NIST has refused to release the computer model input data in response to FOIA requests, claiming that its release would “jeopardize public safety.”
7. NIST’s animated computer model bears no resemblance to the actual collapse as seen in the videos, but the NIST official declared them to be consistent with each other
The NIST WTC 7 computer animation shows buckling of exterior columns, and toppling, and ends after only 3 seconds whereas, the video reveals a straight-down symmetrical collapse.
8. NIST claimed that the “upper block” of each of the Twin Towers crushed the lower block, but video analysis reveals clearly that the "upper block" disintegrated in waves of explosions prior to any crushing of the lower block.
9. In NIST’s tested of the steel floor truss assemblies in a 2-hour/2,000° fire test , they sagged only four inches, yet NIST claimed that these results prove that the actual trusses sagged 42 inches, forcing the exterior columns to buckle by imparting 5,000 pounds of horizontal force against the outside of each column.
In short, NIST’s official technical explanation is fraudulent and inconsistent with basic laws of physics. By contrast, the hypothesis of explosive controlled demolition is consistent with all the available technical evidence.
Since official FEMA and NIST reports provide insufficient, contradictory, and fraudulent accounts of the towers’ destruction, AE911Truth is calling for not only a new investigation into the destruction of the skyscrapers, but for the US Attorney General, Eric Holder, to lead a Federal grand jury investigation of the top individuals responsible at NIST –including Lead Investigator Shyam Sunder, and Co-Project Leader John Gross.

BUSH AS INVETERATE LIAR
The definitive identification of Osama Bin Laden and al Qaeda as the authors of the
atrocity came only on September 20, in Bush’s address to a joint session of Congress.
Bush stated:
The evidence we have gathered all points to a collection of loosely
affiliated terrorist organizations known as al Qaeda. They are the
murderers indicted for bombing American embassies in Tanzania and
Kenya, and responsible for the bombing of the USS Cole. […] This group
and its leader – a person named Osama Bin Laden – are linked to many
other organizations in different countries, including the Egyptian Islamic
Jihad and the Islamic Jihad and the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan.
There are thousands of these terrorists in more than 60 countries. They are
recruited from their own nations and neighborhoods and brought to camps
in places like Afghanistan, where they are trained in the tactics of terror.
They are sent back to their homes or sent to hide in countries around the
world to plot evil and destruction. The leadership of al Qaeda has great
influence in Afghanistan and supports the Taliban regime in controlling
most of that country. In Afghanistan, we see al Qaeda’s vision for the
world. […] And tonight, the United States of America makes the
following demands on the Taliban: deliver to the United States authorities
all the leaders of al Qaeda who hide in your land. […] These demands are
not open to negotiation or discussion. The Taliban must act, and act
immediately. They will hand over the terrorists, or they will share their
fate. […] Our war on terror beings with al Qaeda, but it does not end there.
It will not end until every terrorist group of global reach has been found,
stopped, and defeated. (Bush 10-11)
Here we can see how inextricably the naming of Bin Laden and al Qaeda is bound up
with the unilateral preventive war doctrine, the attack on Afghanistan, and the aggression
against Iraq. But let us put these remarks into contact. Some months later, delivering his
January 2003 State of the Union address from the same podium in the well of the House
of Representatives, this same Bush intoned:
The British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought
significant quantities of uranium from Africa. (January 28, 2003)
These infamous sixteen words added up to one Big Lie in Dr. Goebbel’s sense, as has
been amply demonstrated. In the same speech this same Bush claimed:
We’ve also discovered through intelligence that Iraq has a growing fleet of
manned and unmanned aerial vehicles that could be used to disperse
chemical and biological weapons across broad areas. We’re concerned that
Iraq is exploring ways of using these UAVs for missions targeting the
United States. (January 28, 2003)
No such vehicles ever existed. This same Bush also alleged:
From three Iraqi defectors we know that Iraq, in the late 1990s, had
several mobile biological weapons labs. These are designed to produce
germ warfare agents and can be moved from place to place to evade
inspectors. Saddam Hussein has not disclosed these facilities. He has
given no evidence that he has destroyed them. (January 28, 2003)
Mobile labs of the type described by Bush have never been found in Iraq. Experts have
speculated that these wildly exaggerated reports were based on vans used for public
health purposes, or perhaps on ice cream trucks. On another occasion the very same Bush
asserted:
The evidence indicates that Iraq is reconstituting its nuclear weapons
program. Saddam Hussein has had numerous meetings with Iraqi nuclear
scientists, a group he calls his “nuclear mujahedeen,” his nuclear holy
warriors. (October 7, 2002)
But the renewed nuclear program turned out to be a chimera, most likely invented by the
neocon darling, convicted bank embezzler, and betrayer of American state secrets,
Achmed Chalabi, to justify his $400,000 monthly stipend provided by the American
taxpayer. This was the same Bush who had conjured up the specter of an Iraqi nuclear
attack on the United States:
Facing clear evidence of peril, we cannot wait for the final proof, the
smoking gun that could come in the form of a mushroom cloud.
(Cincinnati, Ohio, October 2, 2002)
The internet teems with web sites dedicated primarily to keeping up with Bush’s
legendary, picaresque mendacity. Bush has lied about the cost of his prescription drug
boondoggle, about nonexistent economic reports he claimed had buttressed his economic
prognostications, about all spheres of policy. He has lied about funding first responders,
grants for port security, payments to children’s hospitals, and veterans’ benefits. The
tenant of the White House has a troubled relation to the very concept of truth.
This is the man who has acquired an unparalleled at home and abroad reputation as a liar
– at least, in those quarters, like the Office of Canadian Prime Minister Chretien, where
he was dismissed as a moron. This is an administration in which blatant lying has become
part of the daily routine – in part because of neocon guru Leo Strauss’s theory that truth
is dangerous for the masses, and rulers therefore have to be esoteric, that is, lie through
their teeth. But whether Bush is a cretin or a liar, his statements offer no sufficient basis
for falling in with the neocons in their march towards endless war against the entire
world. Knowing what we knew as of late 2004, no person of good judgment could ever
accept statements from the current regime at face value. Nevertheless, otherwise
intelligent people who would not dream believing Bush about Iraq or other issues are
content to swallow his biggest whopper of them all: his 9/11 story. This doublethink must
end. The Bush regime is a castle of lies and fabrications, and the keystone of all of them
is the 9/11 myth.
It is now proverbial in Washington to remark that there is no proof linking Saddam
Hussein to 9/11, and this is certainly true. But, by the very same token, there is also no
proof in the public domain anywhere that adds up to a case against Osama Bin Laden and
al Qaeda. We should point out that we hold no brief for the misfit sheikh and his
sociopathic followers. Bin Laden was a creation of the CIA, and his al Qaeda followers,
to the extent that they exist at all, are doubtless individuals characterized by a surfeit of
criminal intent. But we must not join the anonymous CIA agent author of the recent book
Imperial Hubris in portraying the inept and unstable Bin Laden as a genius. Taken by
themselves, Bin Laden and his band represent supermarket-caliber terrorists, capable of
bombing a shopping center, or of destroying a bus. Any capabilities above and beyond
this can only be explained through assistance provided by intelligence agencies, primarily
but not limited to the American ones. There is no doubt that Bin Laden and his benighted
gaggle would have desired to inflict destruction on the scale of 9/11. What is at issue is
their physical and technical capability of doing so on their own in the universe as we
otherwise know it to be constituted. From this point of view, Bin Laden and company
emerge perhaps as actors in the plot, but playing the parts of patsies, dupes, fall-guys, or
useful idiots. The main point remains that Tenet, Clarke, Powell, the FBI, and Bush have
produced no convincing evidence to establish the 19 Moslem men, al Qaeda, and Bin
Laden as the authors of the crimes.
Another Bush administration mythograph has been Donald Rumsfeld, the Secretary of
Defense. But Rumsfeld as well has a troubled relation to truth. In a press conference, he
was asked if he planned to lie in order to protect state secrets. Rumsfeld boasted that he
was clever enough to keep secrets in other ways, but that his underlings might have to
preserve secrecy any way they could:
Rumsfeld: Of course, this conjures up Winston Churchill’s famous phrase
when he said – don’t quote me on this, okay? I don’t want to be quoted on
this, so don’t quote me. He said sometimes the truth is so precious that it
must be accompanied by a bodyguard of lies…. That is a piece of history,
and I bring it up just for the sake of background. I don’t recall that I’ve
ever lied to the press, I don’t intend to, and it seems to me that there will
not be reason for it. There are dozens of ways to avoid having to put
yourself in a position where you’re lying. And I don’t do it.
Reporter: That goes for everybody in the Department of Defense?
Rumsfeld: You’ve got to be kidding. (Laughter.)

To all conspiracy theorethics, I found it very hard to belive that it would be possible to government (or its alliances) to arrange this kind of (911) massive violence against own people, without someone (in this fraud) to leak it out in some point during the planning or after the attack. One could assume that someone of the insiders had to pull it out, but I don't recognize any of that kind of news. Of course, you say that government would kill them or has killed them already, who were trying to tell the truth...
And one psychological fact for the conspiracy theorethics; it is must easier to live in this chaotic world when you have someone to blame of this kind of sudden horrible events, than to admit that this world is dangerous place to live where sudden leathal actions can happen quite easily.
If the threat of whistleblowing is backed by a promise to kill your family when you know that the guv is about to kill 3000 citizens... I think you'd keep your mouth shut.. There is no question that they are not bluffing. Just sayin'.
Furthermore, short of Cheney or Bush confessing the info is out there... We don't know the exact truth but we do know what did not happen. There's just no Deep Throat out there, yet, who is willing to tie it all together in a verifiable framework...
Personally I am more of the "they let it happen" camp... The WTC attack that is... My conjecture for the Pentagon attack is that IT was the real false flag, entirely planned and executed by the cabal that runs the show (for I don't think we can say with any certainty that the White House has any real control of anything). I doubt that in the minds of TPTB that the tower attacks alone would have been sufficient cover upon which to declare war on Dr. Evil, I mean, Osama Bin Laden. For their own comfort they needed an attack to be directed at Washington proper and what better plan than to blow up a wing of the Pentagon with an instantly biodegrading plane and then "foil" a further attack on the White House. The only aspect of this scenario that really stumps me is how they would have disappeared the flight that purportedly struck the Pentagon and how they would have disposed of the passengers.
I really don't buy, at all, that a full sized jet liner crashed into the Pentagon and left only a single piece of twisted sheet metal... Swissair 111 disintegrated as it slammed into the Atlantic Ocean at 600 miles an hour and they were able to retrieve enough pieces from the bottom of the sea to rebuild what is recognizable as an airplane.

It just doesn't compute that there wasn't more plane wreckage at the site.

All these posts, and no one mentions the Enron-Unocal pipeline plan for Afghanistan and our threat to the Taliban: a carpet of flowers or a carpet of bombs.
It was no inside job; we declared war on them under the Clinton Administration and forgot to let bush know. Heck, we barely noticed. But they did.
As for collateral damage, I guess we win. Are still winning. More tickertape anyone?
