Boiling Frog Alert: Congress Wants Automatic Wage Deductions To Pay Down The Debt

Folks… you just can’t make this stuff up.

On July 6th, just two days ago, at least a dozen busybody Congressmen sponsored the introduction of HR 2411, the “Reduce America’s Debt Now Act of 2011.”
They always come up with fantastic names for these pieces of
legislation… and rest assured, the better/more patriotic the name, the
more ominous the bill. This one follows the pattern.

HR 2411 states that every worker in America should be able to
voluntarily have a portion of his/her wages automatically withheld and
sent directly to the Treasury Department for the purposes of paying down
the federal debt.

Every employer making payment of wages shall deduct and
withhold upon such wages any amounts so elected, and shall pay such
amounts over to the Secretary of the Treasury…

That’s right. Uncle Sam is so broke that he wants to give all the
good little Americans out there the opportunity to contribute an even
greater portion of their paychecks to finance government largess.

Desperate? Hmmm…. Don’t worry, it gets better.

Obviously, if an employee feels so compelled and should elect to have
a portion of his/her paycheck withheld, the onus of responsibility is
now on the employer to make it happen. The employer has to do all the
paperwork, withhold the money, send the payment to the Treasury,
maintain the account records, and probably submit to all kinds of new
filing requirements.

You can imagine that, if passed, the bill will result in a host of
new IRS regulations, complete with a battery of penalties for employers
who don’t fill out the paperwork properly, submit filings on time, or
make some administrative mistake.

Think about it: if a small business owner has one single employee who
is dumb enough to think that it’s his patriotic duty to pay down the
debt and decides to contribute $1/month, that owner will have the
responsibility for all kinds of new forms and filings, plus submit to
new ‘debt reduction audits.’

But don’t worry, it gets even better.

So let’s say there are millions of sheep out there who elect to
donate a portion of their toil and sweat so that the Chinese and big
financial institutions don’t have to worry about an American default.
How does Congress plan on rewarding its most patriotic citizens? By
sticking it to them on their taxes, of course.

HR 2411 stipulates that any contribution made to the Treasury in order to pay down the federal debt IS NOT TAX DEDUCTIBLE.

“The [Treasury] Secretary shall include. . . a reasonably conspicuous
statement that any amounts deducted and withheld from wages. . .  are
not deductible as charitable contributions for Federal income tax
purposes.”

Imagine this scenario: You make $100,000/year. In a fit of complete
insanity, you decide that you want to withhold your entire annual salary
to pay down the debt. Hey, you can always move in with mom for the next
year, right?

Well guess what– Uncle Sam will gladly take your money… and then
STILL expect you to pay taxes on the $100,000 that you earned, so you’d
have to come out of pocket with an additional $40,000 or so.

Don’t worry, though. The Social Security and Medicare wages are
reduced by the amount that you withhold, making you only liable for
state and federal taxes. Seems like a good deal, eh comrades?

There are so many things utterly wrong with his piece of legislation,
it’s hard to know where to begin other than by saying that such
intellectual and philosophical perversion is only capable of springing
from unprincipled sociopaths whose sole capability is the destruction of
value.

There’s a great quote from Atlas Shrugged that comes to mind which sums this all up:

[W]hen you see that in order to produce, you need to obtain
permission from men who produce nothing; when you see that money is
flowing to those who deal not in goods, but in favors; when you see that
men get rich more easily by graft than by work, and your laws no longer
protect you against them, but protect them against you. . . you may
know that your society is doomed.

We’ve discussed the story of the boiling frog so many times before– a
frog, when put into a pot of water and slowly brought to a boil,
doesn’t realize that he’s in danger until its too late. I think the
boiling frog just got a little hotter. Have you hit your breaking point yet?

I want to check the box that I will not ever accept the following (and don't want to pay any longer)

- SS

- Medicare/ Medicaid

- Welfare or other Social Services

- Etc.

There, keep what you've already taken from me but take no more.  Make you're silly assumptions for the future of these things w/out my drawing from them.  I'll take care of myself and opt out of all your big brother bullshit.  Why the fuck not...I've paid in since I started working at 12 fucking years old.  I'm 41 now.  Enough.  Plus, if I try to take my own fucking money from my 401k you'll not only tax me but penalize me 10% for departing the Ponzi.

Oh, wait, likely those in gov have already made the assumption for me that I'll get none but why let me off the hook for paying for everybody else?  Why not stick it coming and going to the citizen who works.

i think soc sec usta have a "conscientous objector affadavit" whereby one could opt out of goobermint promises regarding same for reasons of conscience or religion, one or more of which apparently taught that god don't approve of soc sec.  i discovered this in the 70's.  i looked at that form for a long fukin time, i'll tell you!  i was SE at the time (self-employed) which = paying emloyee + employer [$$+$$] portions, less a small deduction in lieu of vaseline.

as i contemplated my slavish, shit-eating state, i slowly began to see that by living like a king on expenses + lying like a rug = less net = less fuking fica, and slowly sank into moral hazard and bourgeois hell.  more or less like a rock star, i might add.   the american  way.

Batshit crazy piece of legislation, no doubt.

But... your figuring of the math is off.  These "good citizen" "donations" would be from after tax income, so if you made 100k, gross, and decided to "donate" every free dollar you earned you'd come out at zero (as long as your wages were approriately deducted at all times for your total year in tax debt).  You'd end up "donating" somewhere north of 75k and paying in taxes the balance.

Completely batshit crazy legislation.  First this would pass, and then they slow propogandize it as the "right" thing to do for your country and ostracize those who don't donate, and then they'll just make it mandatory...

Every Federal government employee and elected official should be immediately enrolled in the program giving 10% of their salary back.

Every person on any form of government assistance should also be allowed to file their own paperwork to reduce the amount of assistance they get.  Why just let the private sector have all the fun?

Then 75% of their personal wealth should be applied to the deficit.

Then the ones that are left serving can try to figure out where to cut.

Can't you already have your payroll adjustment adjusted up however high you want?  Then you can just roll over your refund to the following year.  That way you can contribute to the feds, the paperwork is the same as before, and you can have the money back by claiming a refund whenever you want it.  It doesn't exactly reduce the debt, but it has the same effect until you ask for a refund.

I'd definitely give $1,000 to be able to punch Nancy Pelosi. That old man is evil.

WHO IS JACK SCHITT?

For some time many of us have wondered just who is Jack Schitt?

We find ourselves at a loss when someone says, 'You don't know Jack Schitt!' Well, thanks to my genealogy efforts, you can now respond in an intellectual way.

Jack Schitt is the only son of Awe Schitt. Awe Schitt, the fertilizer magnate, married O. Schitt, the owner of Needeep N. Schitt, Inc. They had one son, Jack.

In turn, Jack Schitt married Noe Schitt. The deeply religious couple
produced six children: Holie Schitt, Giva Schitt, Fulla Schitt, Bull Schitt, and the twins Deep Schitt and Dip Schitt.

Against her parents' objections, Deep Schitt married Dumb Schitt, a high school dropout. After being married 15 years, Jack and Noe Schitt divorced.

Noe Schitt later married Ted Sherlock, and because her kids were living with them, she wanted to keep her previous name. She was then known as Noe Schitt Sherlock.

Meanwhile, Dip Schitt married Loda Schitt, and they produced a son with a rather nervous disposition named Chicken Schitt.

Two of the other six children, Fulla Schitt and Giva Schitt, were inseparable throughout childhood and subsequently married the Happens brothers in a dual ceremony.

The wedding announcement in the newspaper announced the Schitt-Happens nuptials. The Schitt-Happens children were Dawg, Byrd, and Horse.

Bull Schitt, the prodigal son, left home to tour the world. He recently returned from Italy with his new Italian bride, Pisa Schitt.

Now when someone says, 'You don't know Jack Schitt,' you can correct them and tell them you know the whole family!

Sincerely,
Crock O. Schitt

Congressmen's salaries for each following year should have to be voted on by Congress each year, but only after the budget is passed and signed. Futhermore, any member of Congress who is in office when they fail to pass a budget on time should be considered inelegible to run for office in the next election for their district.

I don't get it. Why would they want to pay down debt? If all public and private debts got paid, the money supply would disappear and there would still be interest left owing. What is this really?

Fri, 07/08/2011 - 16:03 | 1438092 Dr. No

You are overthinking it.  Thats the textbook answer.  in reality as debt is paid down, deflation would start to occur (reduction in money supply) which would require the FED to drop money from helicopters in order to meet target inflation rate.

ALL is not the question, that's not going to happen.

You must have control over it and a plan to use the debt

you are running.

You have to stop the rate as it's running away from you now.

There comes a point when more is not good.

Well, if I'm going to do this, I need to do it the American way.  I would like to send the UST IOU's for 10000% of my paycheck.  Payable in 30 years and only if I am able to roll-over that debt perpetually.  Also, I am allowed to create new IOU's to dilute the current IOU's they hold whenever I please.

However, me issuing additional IOU's against my IOU's will in NO WAY cause those IOU's to lose any value, according to me.

I will use my future SSI/Medicare benefits as collateral for this IOU security.  Of course, then I will turn around and bundle these with other "giving" Americans and we'll throw them at the Fed discount window at par.  We will then take the proceeds and buy NFLX because according to my ruler it will hit a 4-handle by 2012.
