Boiling Frog Alert: Congress Wants Automatic Wage Deductions To Pay Down The Debt

Folks… you just can’t make this stuff up.

On July 6th, just two days ago, at least a dozen busybody Congressmen sponsored the introduction of HR 2411, the “Reduce America’s Debt Now Act of 2011.”
They always come up with fantastic names for these pieces of
legislation… and rest assured, the better/more patriotic the name, the
more ominous the bill. This one follows the pattern.

HR 2411 states that every worker in America should be able to
voluntarily have a portion of his/her wages automatically withheld and
sent directly to the Treasury Department for the purposes of paying down
the federal debt.

Every employer making payment of wages shall deduct and
withhold upon such wages any amounts so elected, and shall pay such
amounts over to the Secretary of the Treasury…

That’s right. Uncle Sam is so broke that he wants to give all the
good little Americans out there the opportunity to contribute an even
greater portion of their paychecks to finance government largess.

Desperate? Hmmm…. Don’t worry, it gets better.

Obviously, if an employee feels so compelled and should elect to have
a portion of his/her paycheck withheld, the onus of responsibility is
now on the employer to make it happen. The employer has to do all the
paperwork, withhold the money, send the payment to the Treasury,
maintain the account records, and probably submit to all kinds of new
filing requirements.

You can imagine that, if passed, the bill will result in a host of
new IRS regulations, complete with a battery of penalties for employers
who don’t fill out the paperwork properly, submit filings on time, or
make some administrative mistake.

Think about it: if a small business owner has one single employee who
is dumb enough to think that it’s his patriotic duty to pay down the
debt and decides to contribute $1/month, that owner will have the
responsibility for all kinds of new forms and filings, plus submit to
new ‘debt reduction audits.’

But don’t worry, it gets even better.

So let’s say there are millions of sheep out there who elect to
donate a portion of their toil and sweat so that the Chinese and big
financial institutions don’t have to worry about an American default.
How does Congress plan on rewarding its most patriotic citizens? By
sticking it to them on their taxes, of course.

HR 2411 stipulates that any contribution made to the Treasury in order to pay down the federal debt IS NOT TAX DEDUCTIBLE.

“The [Treasury] Secretary shall include. . . a reasonably conspicuous
statement that any amounts deducted and withheld from wages. . .  are
not deductible as charitable contributions for Federal income tax
purposes.”

Imagine this scenario: You make $100,000/year. In a fit of complete
insanity, you decide that you want to withhold your entire annual salary
to pay down the debt. Hey, you can always move in with mom for the next
year, right?

Well guess what– Uncle Sam will gladly take your money… and then
STILL expect you to pay taxes on the $100,000 that you earned, so you’d
have to come out of pocket with an additional $40,000 or so.

Don’t worry, though. The Social Security and Medicare wages are
reduced by the amount that you withhold, making you only liable for
state and federal taxes. Seems like a good deal, eh comrades?

There are so many things utterly wrong with his piece of legislation,
it’s hard to know where to begin other than by saying that such
intellectual and philosophical perversion is only capable of springing
from unprincipled sociopaths whose sole capability is the destruction of
value.

There’s a great quote from Atlas Shrugged that comes to mind which sums this all up:

[W]hen you see that in order to produce, you need to obtain
permission from men who produce nothing; when you see that money is
flowing to those who deal not in goods, but in favors; when you see that
men get rich more easily by graft than by work, and your laws no longer
protect you against them, but protect them against you. . . you may
know that your society is doomed.

We’ve discussed the story of the boiling frog so many times before– a
frog, when put into a pot of water and slowly brought to a boil,
doesn’t realize that he’s in danger until its too late. I think the
boiling frog just got a little hotter. Have you hit your breaking point yet?

I have a better idea.  Take 100% of the property owned by all former government and large bank executives and apply that to the debt.  Then give them a free ride to Bangladesh and leave them with the clothes on their backs and $100.  Good riddens.  They got everyone in to this mess.

Then, default on the rest of the debt.

Then, close the doors and shut down the government of the USSA just like the USSR shut down years ago.  Leave local governments to serve their local populations.

Then switch to "grams of gold" as the global currency, with absolutely NO forms of fractional reserve practices.  Close all banks, and make banks illegal to operate.

That's a good start.

Just give the grannies torches, pitchforks, and a list of names and addresses of every current and former federal politician and bureaucrat.  Let them divide up the riches formerly owned by the predators-that-be and predator-class.  That'll be better than SS payments.

In the UK I think there are employers who must send employee paychecks directly to the government first. The government takes it's taxes and then sends the individual a check for their after tax earnings. Good luck on disputes or refunds. Confirmation on this from any Brit friends out there?

Thing is, the US doesn't need a law for this --- anyone anytime can write the check for any amount and send it in right now.  This has got to be some stupid marxist/socialist proposing this as another accounting land mine for small business owners.

Dear Treasury Dept.,

Please use one of the Federal Reserve's money creation/destruction programs to delete my Parent Plus Loans from my balance sheet, and make them reappear as a donation to the Treasury. It is really simple. You do it all the time with qe for the banks. No one will know. It will be the same old money creation except it will help someone in the middle class for a change. Thanks. But there are so many other programs that need funding! -- ATF Mexico Gunrunning, Airport Sexual Assault, False Flag Operations, FDA Supplement Removal Program, GMOs Whether You Like It Or Not, Corporate Prostitute Training for Congress, IMF / Worldbank Destruction & Looting Program, Gold / Silver Suppression Program, etc. All so very tempting! Hey guys, think a little about the Turing test. I have a strong suspicion we have an actual, real-live algo in our midst ( coppertop ). Kinda primitive, responds to simple keywords related to the topic (see reaction to 'undervalued', large block posts of more than one paragraph, reaction to link posted, etc.) Now THIS is an account Tyler/Sacrilege should look into. Have you seen any multi-sentence reply from this account? Possibly just the handler doing the algo testing intervening, if so. No, this is a responsive, text recognition algo, constructing a response that attempts to be contextually tied to posts, based on pre-determined rules and patterns. I suspect it is also learning. See the other thread by Tony Pallotta on comparing 2007 top to current setup.

It is just good enough to fly under radar as an annoying/weird ZH reader or outright human troll -- but never inflammatory enough to be called out as such.

Sorry for the repeated postings of this text, let's try to see if we can poke it enough to respond.

On the bright side maybe it can be used to call the bluff of rich(or any for that matter) progressives like Buffett and Gates that claim they/we don't pay enough taxes. They are free at any time to cut a check to the Treasury if they feel undertaxed, so far all they've done for the most part is shelter their future estates in charitable trusts.

Let's issue a warning to these spineless lackeys.  Watch your backs you government stooges.  The riots in Greece were a warmup to what's going to happen here in the U.S. once we have our sovereign debt crisis.  Go ahead and keep destroying the currency, spending money the country doesn't have and stomping all over the Constitution.  The people are catching on to your nonsense.  You will pay for your treachery tenfold once the crap really hits the fan in America, and so will the insidious swine whose interests you serve, because clearly, you do not represent the American people.

I gotta say... I don't see the problem.

I don't see why this would have to be a paperwork nightmare anymore than the voluntary "donation" toward federal elections is a paperwork nightmare.

Hey... don't get me wrong... I'm certainly not gonna "contribute" one red cent... but in the greater scheme of congressional idiocy... this doesn't even raise a blip.

The sheer desperation (not to mention, lunacy) of this idea really does not speak well for any kind of reasonable outcome in these talks.  Congress is completely out of touch with main street because it's had it's head up wall street's ass for three years and is just beginning to pull it out to take a look around.

Huh?  What'd ya mean they don't want to make a (non-tax-deductible) donation to the great black bottomless pit of debt we dug in order to give bonuses to the banksters?  Who knew?  We're all in this boat together, aren't we?

Sure, we are.  Main street is rowing like hell and Wall street is sitting up front in the prow, yelling "I'm King of the World!"  Congress is bailing like crazy.

Disobey.

Welcome to Canada folks:

HST: 13% of all sales.

Income tax: Up to 49% if you are over 100K(why bother earning more if you only give it to the tax man). Nice incentives isn't it.

Land tax, building permits, Fishing licenses, hunting permits, Boating license, Car license, registration fees (yearly), property tax, CPP, UI, and the list goes on.

This is nothing more than another tax grab by your own government in the USA. This is what happens to broke governments that PROMISE people too much and live well beyond their means. These are your leaders folks. People who are going to lead you out of debt by over spending. I mean what could be more stupid than that. Try going to a debt couselor with that one, see what they say. "Yes.....that's right sir.....I aim to solve my over spending problem by increasing my spending"??????? "Oh and if that doesn't work maybe everyone else can pay my debts by donating a little of their own earnings from their pay". If it weren't so stupid it might almost be laughable. My only question is how come no one said we MIGHT BE SPENDING TOO MUCH when the debt was a hundred million. How the hell did one hundred trillion happen???? Morons!

Garnisheeing of wages for living beyond one's means.

This has a positively Geethneresque feel.

In Athens, they were incited to riot over having actually pay their taxes and having to work to retirement age.  In the U.S., you are going to have to dig deep to find the nerve, especially since they already lost their jobs, houses, medicare, labour rights, the battle with inflation, etc. etc. etc.

Not that anyone within the the U.S. has any presumption that this isn't just another banker bailout scheme.

For years, the IRS has proclaimed that the great virtue of America's tax system is that it's voluntary. How does the IRS define "voluntary"? It says that the tax is voluntary because everyone computes his own income tax liability and sends the amount owed to the government. In other words, if the government calculated the tax liability for the citizenry, the tax would be involuntary. But since the people themselves are permitted to compute the liability, the tax is voluntary.

Get your money out now. Voluntary = mandatory in the US of A.
