Has the Oil Well Really Been Capped?

George Washington's picture

Washington’s
Blog

Everyone is saying that the well has been capped.

I hope so.

But even the government's spokesman, Thad Allen, isn't saying that it's been capped.

Here's an interchange from yesterday's press briefing:

Joel
Achenbach: Yes thank you Admiral, I’m sorry if I’m a little bit
confused, is there some concern that there are hydrocarbons in the
annulus or is there some kind of reading or was it a model that someone
examined and decided this was a concern? Can you explain that just a
little bit better?…

Admiral Allen: … We do not know the status of
the annulus, OK? It, there could be nothing in it or it could be full
of hydrocarbons. It could be full of hydrocarbons that are being
pressured up from the reservoir, there could be hydrocarbons that are in
there that have been sealed off because cement actually did that from
the top kill.

Or there could be a way that because of the seals
at the top of the annulus between that and the well head there could be a
path for hydrocarbons to go forward. We’ve never known that from the,
from the beginning…

YouTube Video

Oil industry expert Bob Cavnar notes: "It's pretty clear they have pressure on the wellhead when they shouldn't." Cavnar translates Allen's comments as meaning:

BP
continues to have pressure on the wellhead from down below and have
been letting me believe for a week that the well is static.

On August 8th, Cavnar pointed out in a must-read article that it is impossible to say whether or not the well has been capped given the available information:

The problem is that there are lots of questions that remain unanswered. Here's what I want to know:

  • Is the well dead?
  • What is the pressure on the well? Now?
  • If the well is open to the surface, what is that pressure?
  • What was the pressure during the "static kill"? Did it change at any time? What was total volume pumped?
  • What
was the pressure during the bullhead cement job? Did you do the
"hesitation squeeze" that Kent Wells mentioned in passing? What was
    displacement volume?
  • How do you know all the cement went down the casing?
  • What was the pressure on the well after the job?
  • Why is the flex joint flange leaking?
  • Why are the ROV feeds no longer provided in a decipherable resolution?
  • Why are some ROV feeds not being provided?
  • Has the well kicked since the bullhead cement job?
  • What pressure did the bullhead cement job test to?
  • Have you had to pump mud into the well since the bullhead cement job? How much?
  • Why are clouds of debris continuing to obscure the view several days after the well was supposedly "static"?
  • Were the rams of the old BOP opened for the static kill or bullhead cement job?
  • If so, could you tell if the drill pipe fish stuck in the BOP dropped into the well?
  • Can you close the blind shear rams now?
  • What is the damage to the rams in the old BOP?

Until
these questions are answered by BP, we have no real information to
tell us that the well is dead, or even safe. As long as they continue
to stonewall critical data, I'll only continue to believe that the well
is not "static" or safe.

Oh my, this is just getting silly now. You know, many of your first few questions about current pressure, what volume was pumped in during the static kill/cementing, etc. were answered in the 3 most recent technical updates, right? Pressure at the BOP is currently at 4,200psi and will be taken down to 2,500-3,000psi after the storm clears (altough neither the negative or positive pressure test are likely to tell us much). 2,300 barrels of mud were injected. 500 barrels of cement were injected. Is it capped? Yes. (why is that a question?) Is it killed? No, not until the bottom kill is completed. That's been clear for some time now.

What was the question?  I did not find one?

Geo Wash asserted that everyone claims the well is capped.  Even Thad Allen did not make that claim.  Who did Geo Wash hear make the claim?  That is the question that needs to be answered.  Along with telling us who is paying her for the continuous shilling nonsense for the shorts.

Yet others would think it sexist that we refer to most posters as he, even tho we don't know the gender for a fact.

Interesting point being made here Ms.  We don't know for sure the gender of most posters, yet we are comfortable referring to them as he.  We are not comfortable when someone refers to an unknown gender as a she.

There was an exchange a while back where G.W. said some things that one could infer came from a female poster.  I think Augustus' use of she dates from that exchange.

We could just use s/he for everyone.

the only way it makes any sense to me is if ms creant has some serious self esteem issues, and she just automatically assumes calling someone a 'she' is a grave insult.

You should read up on some great women ms creant, maybe it will help you. Start with maggie thatcher, ayn rand...

Keep up the good work GW. It's pretty funny that BP and the guv have the credibility rating of a crackhead inlaw to the point where you could claim that they are using the ocean as a cheap pipeline to get the oil up the east coast to be collected and refined and sold under the table as unleaded avec salt, and all your critics can say is 'thats irresponsible hogwash', or 'aren't you tired of being wrong?', but can't find anyone credible to quote who could actually set the record straight. Love it.

I don't know anyone who has been saying that the well has been capped.  Who have you been listening to to get that bad information.  Thad Allen did not tell you that it had been capped.  Why do you make up the BS that "EVERYONE says the well is CAPPED"?

Notice how GW and CD try to poison the well against dissent as soon as the thread is posted. I still think that GW is just wasting space beating a dead horse, not bringing anything meaningful to the table, and that is my opinion.

The article and cartoon are nonsense.  the only accurate representation is that the well went pretty much straight down.

Wasn't the well capped when they put the last top-hat on it that stopped the flow?  Aren't we now waiting for the well to be plugged when they finish the bottom-kill?  As snakehead suggested above, I have not seen anyone claim that the well will be considered plugged / dead until they finish the bottom-kill operation.  Methinks G.W. understands this and is simply milking the story, fishing for eyeballs.

Geo Wash does not understand very much at all.  If she did, she would not be so ready demonstrate ignorance on a reasonably serious investment blog.  However, it does seem that the fishing for eyeballs is certainly one motive.  Along with the obvious payments she receives.

You attempt to insult GW by calling him a woman. Don't know the gender of this poster, none of us can. But I tell you what, I am a woman. Are you telling me that I am inferior because of that status? That being a woman is an insult? If you call me a woman, are you insulting me? I don't give a flying fuck about political correctness. I am asking you to reflect on why you make this choice in your posts. If I called you a woman, would you take that as an insult? You refer to GW as ignorant, "fishing for eyeballs" etc. And she. When all others assume he. What is your point Augustus?

Quite a strange story.  In listening to Simmons he came across as quite intelligent, well informed, a I would say well possessed of his faculties.  He was also becoming quite prominent and it seems it would have been quite easy for BP to easily discredit him if necessary (show NOAA charts, that kind of stuff).  Well, hopefully, he was just off his rocker, the well's been capped, and this can just be a lesson about being careful when working at the limits of your technology.

Hi GW,

Hope you had a good week off, I see you return fresh, congratulations about your power to go on.

I admire you in this and i admire your consequent behavior.

One thing i did not see any other reaction on, is a comment from yesterday about Montesanto, it is far worse then the gulf the facto(and that is already a very bad happening)

Another thing is the influence on the currents from the oil under the sea, on satellite you can see the impact, it will be freezing soon in Englands BP headquarter, and of course in Washington.

Thx for all your info

Cavnar's trying to stay relevant to sell his new book.

They've been clear about one thing: nobody's willing to declare the well dead till bottom kill has been done and tested.  But to say that it hasn't been "capped" is ludicrous.

If it was capped and everything is hunky-dory BP would be streaming hi-res video 24/7 and publicizing their success on MSM.  But all is quiet.  BP's silence speaks volumes.

What is the status of that 400 foot deep lake of oil at the bottom of the GOM that supposedly is size of several states?  Is there any credible independent scientific investigation being done to quantify BP's Lake of Oil eco-disaster?  Didn't think so.
