Possible ... but hard to believe that pointing a HF radio wave at a stretch of ocean thousands of miles away (and 100 kilometres offshore, and many kilometres deep into the crust) could compete with a solar mass ejection and, simultaneously, a moon at its closest distance for many decades, when it comes to twisting the earth's crust!

It's also not an isolated earthquake in the area - here is the historic record: http://neic.usgs.gov/neis/eq_depot/2011/eq_110309_b0001r57/neic_b0001r57...

But, who can say for sure?

Yes, and what happens next?  The entire island, or at least most of it, should evacuate pronto.  The US military will now be called in to dump conrete and lead all over the plant, but would this help?  What exactly can be done?

Creed, you are not qualified to talk to me about muni bonds.  It is patently absurd to lump all muni bonds into one general characterization.  GO bonds issued by the State of Texas (e.g.) are not comparable with munis issued by Vallejo, CA.  They are nothing alike.

Do some research before making uneducated comments.

It is even worse than what they are telling people about.  The media is not mentioning the small fact that one of the reactors has Mox fuel in it.  Which is 2 million xs worst than normal uranium fallout.

And the separate spent fuel pool (a separate building from the reactors) at Daiichi - how is that doing?

Here's a link to a PPT that descibes on-site nuclear fuel storage at Daiichi (Fukashima I) site:

http://www-ns.iaea.org/downloads/rw/conferences/spentfuel2010/sessions/s...

One can also determine the quantity of fuel rods/casks at the Daiichi site (and maybe even the number of fuel rods at each individual building and reactor) by paying attention to the charts showing what can be stored where  ...

China Syndrome bitches.

"

The China Syndrome is a term coined by an American physicist in 1971 to describe the hypothetical result of a severe nuclear meltdown in which molten reactor core components penetrate their containment vessel and building and melt through the crust of the Earth (possibly penetrating deeply enough to reach a point on the other side of the world). The veracity of this hypothesis remains strongly contested.

All the actual nuclear engineers agree that the core can't melt through the bottom of the really thick steel tank that's it in. This is the kind of thing that is subject to calculation and I don't see this as being in error. The "other" fuel elements in the "cooling room", I refuse to call it a pool; it's a goddam room in a building; are not protected by anything; they are sort of like, in your garage, basically.

It was only a matter of time until 5 and 6 were disclosed as having problems. Once they admitted to 4, which was already down for maintenance, 5 and 6 which we also down for maintenance were obvious candidates for problems.

They were candidates for problems when, 1) they were nuclear reactors, 2) an 8.9 quake hit, 3) a tsunami washed over.  4) other reactors in the same complex are melting down.  Its not like it is a big cover-up.

I was talking about when they were "officially" disclosed as problems. It was obvious when unit one exploded that all were now in play. However the apologist and disinfo agents on ZH were making sure to shout down anyone who even discussed the possibility of this type of escalation as hysterical and fear mongers.

They now seem to be missing from the discussion. I hope they come back real soon to backpedal.

Most, if not all, of the disinformation was posted about the way the nuclear reactors are designed to work.  I think these "disinfo" slingers will be proven more correct than incorrect - as it pertains to what is in the nuclear reactors.  I think nothing more than low-level problems will come from this source, even if the pellets melt and fall to the floor of the container.  Don't think there is enough heat left to melt through the floor.  But we will see, won't we.

The trouble is mostly comming from the spent fuel-rod rooms/pools.  I don't think anybody has spread disinformation about the radiation danger these spent fuel rods pose when they lose their water covering.  I think some are being overly optomistic about the average man's ability to get proof of high radiation readings out to the world in the face of the Japanese government's clamp-down on news distribution.

Hi RichardP.

Disinformation is so much more than just spreading actual disinformation. It is first and foremost a psyops program designed to disrupt and demoralize, to create division and argument. This is the definition I use when I mention disinfo.

It is also why I refer to disinfo agents rather than disinformation. I am talking about a process and a technique rather than specific information.

I agree.  Still, I don't remember much argument in support of the cooling pools being safe.  But with so much to read, I may be just not remembering correctly.

CD you may be understating. This could become at least Chernobyl x 4 on the INES scale. Remember, approx. 600 000 spent fuel rods oxidizing (no such thing in Chernobyl), plus 1 reactor with plutonium (no 2), plus other sites. And all of them are escalating according to worst case scenarios.

If Chernobyl was rated a 7, this accident could become:

7x4 = 28, plus 6x4=24 for the rods at all plants burning into the atmosphere, plus the other issues at other sites, let's say 4 sites with issues ranging from 1-3, average 2, which is 4 x 2 = 8 in total. Add another 7 for the release of plutonium.

Sum = 28 + 24 + 8 + 7 = 67. And this is on a scale from 1 to 7. And what about all those other sites which are not big news.

I am deliberately understating because I am not an expert and I have no more info than anyone else on this thread and probably less than some. Plus I really don't wish to be an alarmist. So I stick to what I can see in the photos and I dabble in some thoughtful extrapolation and speculation.

But thanks for noticing my stated understatement. Can I panic now? Who's in charge of the panic button?  :>)

I am not as alarmed about these as compaired to Chernobyl, perhaps due to ignorance.  Chernobyl did not have a containment building and so the core exploded and ejected materials to the outside world and was able to melt down until fuel was gone.

I assume the japanese reactors have semi-modern containment buildings.  Additionally, I assume the engineers incharge of designing containment building did some rough calculations on heat and pressure when designing containment buildings.  Assuming the buildings were built to specs, it should not melt through.  Otherwise they should be called semi-containment buildings. (which they could be I guess).

You do know all the containment buildings have holes in them because of the hydrogen explosions, right?  They are no longer containment buildings.

Dude, take it easy. So I didnt spend 5 paragraphs stating the process of uranium rods, when under a controlled chain reaction, release boat loads of heat, and to stop the reaction and reduce heat generation, blah, blah, blah, I used the words "fuel" and "gone".  Perhaps I should have said "until heat generation subsided enough for it to stop melting everything on gods green earth".  Happy?

I do find humor in these posts.  Several posters have shown criticism in my attempt to communicate my feeling that the Japan nuke disaster will be less than the Chernobyl event, eventhough my original response was to a poster who stated the Japan event should be a rated a 67 when the Chernobyl event is listed as a 7.

What is "core damage?"  Have the rods in any of the cores fused together yet?  If that's what they mean by "core damage" then we have major big time problems.  If on the other hand they just mean exposed rods and misalignment then that's still bad but better as there are still things that can be done.  If the cores are fusing or have already fused there is very little that can be done past that point except wait for them to break containment or put mass on top of them to squelch the explosion that will occurr when they burn down to the ground water.

Speculation is that enough time has gone by that the rods may be hot enough to melt but not hot enough to melt through the much thicker floor.  We are going to find out whether that is true or not.

The article linked above says the PM stormed into a meeting of an executive meeting of Tokyo Electric Power Co. and demanded to know, “What the hell is going on?”

This is not good. This means that as the country prepares to melt down, communication between the people who should be providing solutions have melted down as well.
