Here Is Your Chance To Ask Just What Magic Eight Ball The BLS Pulls Its Data From

Tyler Durden's picture

Following tomorrow's NFP announcement, the Bureau of Labor Statistics will entertain a Q&A session with the general public. The BLS will use Cover It Live (which prescreens questions, so don't expect any too "pertinent" questions to be allowed). We hope TrimTabs' Charles Biderman will use this opportunity to discuss some of his rather divergent payroll observations. Furthermore, we ourselves may inquire as to what the reason why the average unemployed's monthly paycheck has now increased to the all time record of just under $1,500 based on a total insured population of just under 11 million, and why if the actual check is where it should be (~$1,000) is there a shadow 40% of the insured work pool (roughly 4 million people) that is not being accounted for?

Link to the BLS Q&A can be found here.

Where is BLS (and everyone else) drawing their data from? Well, the sun certainly doesnt shine there much!

I have a question. Pick me, pick me.

Do the mothers of those who work at the top of the BLS know that their sons and daughters lie like rugs? And does anyone have any Ivory soap on hand?

Thank you.

"Do the mothers of those who work at the top of the BLS know that their sons and daughters lie like rugs?"

CD: Do They Lie?

Or is it the Geithner, Rubin, Dodd model of government... Pick the dumbest fuckers in the room and promote them as they fail upwards...

Maybe BLS is just populated with the worst statisticians Amerika has to offer... Could you explain Citi management any other way?

I was attempting to be humours. I don't think the lie originated in the BLS. But if I participate in a lie, in my book it's the same as if I personally lied.

I've been a subscriber of Shadowstats (John Williams) for a number of years and have read all his primers and documents on how the models and data acquisition was changed over the years. It was deliberate on some one's part. Deliberate and systematic from administration to administration. And from what I can tell, while BLS may have been told to make the changes, it appears the methods were homegrown within the BLS or other agencies empowered to gather and collate the data.

So I will grant you it might not be BLS who is actually lying (they can claim they are only following the models) they most certainly had made changes that, in some cases, have spanned decades. And the divergence has grown over the past few years, as Tyler has documented only yesterday. Again, is it BLS or Obama or the Fed? Does it matter? I worry about the poor mothers. :>)

"I was attempting to be humours."

I took at as humor and it was totally hilarious...+1111 on the CD meter.

My retort humor is highly sarcastic, contrarian and ironic... Funny thing is humor is often truth and truth hurts baby... but it is often funnier than HELL.

I have read much of Williams free postings as well. I think it is the constant politicizing of every agency, stat, announcement to mislead the public and continue the looting...

How to Fuck Up a Fed Agency Without Really Trying

The directives come down to BLS and they do what they are told. Without a doubt lifer bureaucrats dying to get ahead will do the bidding of what ever administration and will kiss ass and implement anything, sound or unsound...

Then the Peter Principle supplies the rest....Pravada.

A co-worker and trusted friend told me about this as it was taking place back in the early '80s in Washington, D.C. (where we both worked at that time).

His former roommate, who moved out when he married and had just purchased a home with his new wife, was a statistician with the BLS.

Reagan, then the president, didn't much care for the job numbers coming out of the BLS, therefore he reduced the staff of statisticians by 50%.

One night, my friend and co-worker, together with this still-BLS statistician went out for a dinner together and ruminated over those fellows the BLS kept on board, and those they jettisoned.

Curiously, it wasn't an age factor or salary factor involved, as they were spread across that spectrum.

The one common factor all those still employed with the BLS had in common was they had ALL recently been saddled with some type of mortgage (house mortgage, condo, etc.).

The next jobs numbers spewed forth from the BLS radically changed for the better.

AM is back from vacation. The place was quiet without you.

Did you clean that "Orifice of Eccles" before you touched it? Please, wash you hands before you sit down for lunch. We don't wish for you to be a test case of the new health insurance law.

Alas, off again for a week, this time in-country, Miami sans kids, for some R&R with the missus.

I'll be back.

LOL

I asked the "spiritual" eight ball this question.

"Will the BLS number be a lie?"

The ball answered this way.

"Know when to quit."

Did you hear that BLS?

Great, I just submitted my question:

"I think I speak for everyone when I extend my heartfelt gratitude for the awesome job you guys and gals do over there at the BLS! Keep up the good work and ignore all those pesky critics from the peanut gallery--they're just jealous they don't have your awesome good fortune to be working for the BLS! PS: what's your favorite color?"

the food stamp program is an end run around unemployment benefits, a millionaire with his assets in a 401K and no monthly income, wink wink nod nod, can apply. whats more these programs are being actively promoted at the state level, because higher enrollment qualifies that states for more federal benefits.

i wonder if rent stamps, and transportation stamps are next. you can apply for snap over the phone, that's right they call it SNAP, you get a debit card, and people line up at Walmart at midnight on the first of the month when the accounts are credited. unemployment might be 5% someday soon, and food stamp recipients double that number.

unemployment figures are kinda like the body counts in Nam, only in reverse.
