A Higher Percentage of Americans Believed in King George During the Revolutionary War than Believe in Congress Today

George Washington's picture

Washington’s Blog

Influential Harvard and Stanford law professor Lawrence Lessig noted in a must-watch speech last week that polls show that only 11% of the American people have confidence in Congress.

He notes that more people believed in King George at the time of the Revolutionary War than believe in congress today.

He's right.

Historians have estimated that between 15 and 20% of the white population of the colonies were Loyalists

Watch:

Why do so few Americans today believe in our government? Because the government is serving the giant corporations and the ultra-wealthy, and not Main Street and the common American. And see this.

Every revolution is a bit messy.

I still believe Alexander Hamilton was right in supporting the requirement to own property to vote. He said that those who didnt have property would just vote to take it from those that do.

It is the same reason we require people to be stockholders to vote in corporate elections. Without an ownership interest eople tend to vote just out of pure short term self interest.

And how many votes would you get relative to your propety value?

You might feel good filling out those proxies and sending them in, but unless your sahres add up to a notable percentage of the total, your vote means jack.

What we really need is a requirement that ONLY real live voters can make political contributions.  No corps, no unions, no PACS, no forereigners.  One person, one vote, and only voters making contributions.

Take about 80% of the dollars out of the political process and everything would change.

eleven Bravo!

"What we really need is a requirement that ONLY real live voters can ..."

I'll finish it for ya: "VOTE!"

examples (from depleted memory, but you'ch can look id up)

- LBJ as a young political wannabee in TX: writing down names in the cemetary, stops at the old part.  Old pol says 'git in there boy.  Them folks have as much right to vote as anyone else aroud here.'

- Joe Kennedy Sr. on JFK win: "I was willing to pay for a victory in IL, I wasn't willing to pay for a landslide."

- RAH proposed that only veterans could vote.  Why? 'Because it works'

etc.

As opposed to...say Canada,

As opposed to nobody. As opposed to nobody. Finding justification of one's ways in other ways is nice but still it comes with a price. A price that US citizens are not ready to pay as they keep saying their ways are best when they find justification in others' ways.

Countries that did not define unalienable rights to life and co did not have to behave according to something they had not defined nor adopted.

The irony comes when history shows their record to be better than US records when it comes to respect of the so called unalienable rights.

Yet we had this for what, 2/3 of our history? Idiot, expanding the franchise to leeches and non-producers leads to the loss of your rights and property, stolen from you to feed the ticks-just so they vote for the looters.  No democracy has existed that didn't murder itself;

I've read of liberals actually proposing that the citizens of other nations be allowed to vote in our (USA) elections, I sh*t you not!  And why can't illegals vote?  Falek, you win the dumbest post I've yet seen on 0hedge.

Little to do with that. The US has been a big robber since inception. There was plenty outsiders to rob from in 1776. Ask the Indians.

In 2010, there is  much less to rob. Or the robbing rate can not be increased as easily as it could during the 19th century.

Your rights to life liberty and property are inalienable. A $500 one time bond ought to be required to vote. Any time you want your money back and to quit voting no problem.

You should have to care enough to make some.sacrifices in order to vote.

DP, I, nor any of "my guys" (most of "my guys" don't hang around here nor the internet) don't do unattributed cut'n'paste in any forum.  In my real life that is one strike and "the security guard will escort you out of the building, sir!"

So I care, when I'm spending my time reading stuff that migh actually be someone's serious thoughts, well considered.  I also might wish to have a figh... ..er.. 'vigorous discussion' with someone who knows/cares about a subject.  Might even change my mind; certainly make me understand wtf is up with what is actually going on.  I'll grant you Hegel masturbation as well.

So, when your cut'n'paste trashes the "Boston Massacre" that I've looked at in some detail (and that John Adams, prig that he was, took on as a sacred duty to defend the Brits), I'd thought to cross swor... ..er.. have a vigorous discussion with you about that.

But we would have been wasting each other's time (and precious ZH scrolling pixels) since, well, you would have given me cut'n'paste answers.

Again with this old horse? Every person has a fetish but at this point, it looks more like an obsession.

Finding justification in the Indian ways is destroying the US creed as US people did not grow what they became on their own creed but in the Indian creed. Once again, it is far from being the case, US citizens love to laudate their so called ways. If you think the moral ways of Indians have been superior and the result of the US success, then do it and abandon the US creed.

Yours is a very cheap trick of disinformation, another example that 'debate' is dead in the West as more and more people can not discuss facts and have to sidetrack.

The discussion is not about the Indians' ways and their justification but on the US ways and their justifications. No Indians as far as I knew hijacked Humanity as the US did. The US rooted justifications of their actions in so called human rights with all the distortions that followed.

Indians justified their actions on themselves, as people, as an ethnical group of people.

Very different from US citizens who diluted their responsibility as much as they could.
