House Rejects Measure Approving "Limited" Military Intervention In Libya

Tyler Durden's picture

Just out:

  • HOUSE REJECTS MEASURE TO ALLOW ONLY SOME SUPPORT ACTIONS
  • HOUSE VOTES NOT TO RESTRICT U.S. MILITARY ROLE IN LIBYA

The vote was  238 to 180. So does this mean the president is now implicitly violating the War Powers Act? It is getting impossible to follow all the strands of the 5 war fronts that America is successfully finding itself into. Also, does it mean America is now officially at war with Libya? Or does it mean simply that America has unlimited funding to continue its pursuit of "humanitarian" light sweet?

Inquiring minds want to know.

From Reuters:

War-fatigued lawmakers in the U.S. House of Representatives took a symbolic swipe at President Barack Obama's Libya policy on Friday, rejecting a resolution that would have authorized his limited military intervention against Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi for a year.

The Republican-led House, upset over Obama's failure to seek congressional approval of U.S. military action in Libya, voted 123-295, largely along party lines, to reject the resolution endorsing U.S. involvement in the NATO-led mission.

Immediately after the vote, the House began debating a second Libya measure that would effectively prevent the U.S. military from participating in strike missions against Libya but allow it to continue to provide NATO forces with intelligence, refueling, planning and other support.

Since NATO took over the Libya operation on March 31, the United States has conducted 755 strike sorties, including 119 in which the planes actually fired at targets. Thirty-nine of the strikes involved the use of drone aircraft.

The congressional action was another warning to Obama about growing discontent among lawmakers after a decade of wars in Afghanistan and Iraq that has cost more than a trillion dollars and has helped fuel a $1.4 trillion budget deficit.

Lawmakers who supported action authorizing U.S. participation in the NATO mission against Gaddafi warned that rejection of the measure and approval of curbs on U.S. military involvement could damage the U.N.-authorized operation.

The bottom line, the constitutional professor's attempt to trample the constitution is what has set everyone off:

"We probably would have had ... pretty broad
support here in the Congress for the action that was taken by the
president if there had been early authorization
," said Representative
David Dreier, a Republican. "I think Democrats and Republicans alike
acknowledge that this has been very, very poorly handled.
"

That... and everything else in the last few years.

The military-industrial complex must be fed.

As with the bailouts - the will of the people will be ignored.

Sons and Daughters will be brought home in coffins.

Wall Street and Washington will get bonuses and kickbacks.

the african union is trying to broker a deal.  they think none of the sides has a heluva lotta choice, at this point.

NATO smoked another group of rebels and had another succesful strike against civilians.  NATO lost a helicopter.  they said it was a drone.  NATO casualties = 0.

the moQ is firing rockets into misurata, and has been counter-attacking in the area.  they are dancin'.

the brits had a fun week!  there were some reports that the military might be overstretched if this continued much longer.  then, the PM, cameron, tells the military to STFU and fight.  on thursday, the Ministry of D. puts the upper limit @ 250 million pounds, just b4 the D-mini himself, Liam Fox, waltzed into the House of Commons and said it was 260 million.  hahaha!  (c. $415 mil)

yest, italy called for a truce;  today, NATO is beating the war drum, calling for a military victory.  morgan strong leads with this, today (Paste fr. The Tripoli Post):

(Reuters) - NATO's chief on Thursday dismissed a call from Italy for a suspension of hostilities in Libya and tried to reassure wavering members of the Western coalition that Libyan leader Muammar Al Qathafi can be beaten.

Italy's ceasefire call exposed the strain on the NATO alliance, nearly 14 weeks into a bombing campaign that has so far failed to dislodge Al Qathafi but is causing mounting concerns about its financial cost and about civilian casualties.

It would be hilarious and comical if we weren't talking about people's lives.  We went into Libya supposedly under the auspice of protecting Libyan citizens from their leader, but we end up causing as much or more destruction than he would have...... oh, yeah, the rebels that we are supporting...hate America and are comprised of a lot of al-qaida.  In some parallel and upside down world, this might make sense, but here its just fracked up.

Right here brother. Yeah, I voted for Obama because he would end the wars, close Guantanamo bay, reign in the Banksters, help the middle class, and a host of other broken promises. I agree he lied, is a war criminal, is arrogant, and is not fiscally responsible. In other words, he continued all of GW Bush's policies. I won't make that mistake again. In fact,I may never vote again since I am leaving this war mongering nation for greener pastures. The US I love is DOA. The flag waving makes me nauseous. We do have a murderer in the White house, and a fool as well.

I am just impressed that the House voted against the President on this issue. Do you realize this is a first? Obama might have gotten the authorization if he'd done if first, but that's not his way. He believes in the authority of the executive branch, at least with him in charge of it.

I think this is one very small but significant blow for liberty and the rule of the Constitution. I hope it continues and grows.

I smell a second Nobel Peace prize coming.

Pretty sure if he can start a 6th front in Iran, he will even beat Dick Cheney in this category.

Also pretty sure if he can get the SPR to dump another 30m/boe on the market before the voting closes he might also be a contender for the economics prize.

Change you CAN believe in.

And a 2nd Nobel Prize for Krugman, while they're at it...

Krugman 'struck' by those who say Argentina 'is no longer considered serious'
  • Buenos Aires Herald - ‎Jun 23, 2011‎

BIS

An important part of Libya’s financial sector reform strategy is to allow foreign banks to operate in the country. In this context, the Central Bank of Libya (the “Central Bank”) will issue two licenses to foreign banks who would have an ownership of up to 49% in the new banks with full management control. The remaining 51% will be owned by domestic investors. The Central Bank will be handling all issues related to the issuance of the two licenses and will mobilize domestic investors.

Proposed Timetable

Expressions of Interest should be sent by March 30, 2010. Pre-qualified banks will be provided with an Application Package by April 15, 2010 which will have to be completed and submitted to the Central Bank by June 15, 2010.

Next:

Directors welcomed the introduction by the Central Bank of Libya (CBL) of a new 28-day certificate of deposit and its establishment of an overnight facility as steps to enhance the monetary policy framework. They noted the importance of addressing the factors behind the large excess liquidity in the banking system, including by establishing the treasury single account and reforming the specialized credit institutions (SCIs) with a view to reducing their on-lending activities and curtailing budget allocations. Directors encouraged the authorities to continue to strengthen bank supervision, with a focus on capacity building and enhancing coordination between on-site and off-site supervision units.

Directors agreed that the dinar’s peg to the Special Drawing Rights (SDR) remains appropriate by providing a strong monetary anchor. They noted the staff’s assessment that the dinar’s exchange rate is broadly aligned with fundamentals.

The internal affairs of Libya were and are none of our concern.  Most Middle East countries consist of tribes that have been warring with each other for hundreds of years...we can't and shouldn't try to fix it.  Congress has given him entirely too much room and should revoke the War Powers Act..... rant to follow.

(1) Barack Obummer - renounced his citizenship so he could attend an Indonesian only school.  He, therefore, is not a natural born citizen anymore period.  But, at this point, that is water under the bridge.... it is, though, a complete flouting of U.S. Constitutional law.

(2) Obummer doesn't really care about the Constitution (see above) because his actions speak much louder than his telepromter words.  He sees himself as a monarch and/or dictator and believes he can start any war he chooses regardless of the fact that the Constitution specifically reserves this power and authority with Congress.

(3) Obummer just had a $30,000+per plate fund raising dinner with the same crooks and shysters that have raped and pilaged this country and he has no qualms about doing this type of thing.  His actions continue to speak volumes about his complete lack of principles.

(4) Obummer will continue to sell his soul to get re-elected without regard to the cost to this country.  He needs 2012 so that he can do away with the Constitution and initiate Martial law under some false pretense (Yes, most of the population will be clamouring for him to do so.....no fake crisis shall be wasted).

(5) Both parties suck.....because in the end.....they are all run under the same concept of screw the American public and steal what you can while you can.  With few exceptions, there are few elected representatives at any level of government that really care about how to truly allow freedom to reign.

(6) Yes, Bush sucked too.

(7) Repeal the Patriot Act, fire every TSA agent, breakup Homeland Security back into separate functions and reduce the size of the federal government to its Constitutional mandates only (balanced budget would be no problem).

And suddenly, I awake from a dream and realize that no one gives a crap and America will very soon be put into debtor's prison.  Hey, but as long as the band continues to play on the deck, we must be safe.

Politics has everything to do with finance, the stock market and economics.  They are all woven together in a tight ball.  The motivations of various politicians for the policies they take stands for or against give an indication of who paid them the most and where the ultimate law or regulation will culminate at its conclusion.  Don't forget that government, as it stands right now, represents over 40% of the GDP of this country.  Also, most of the articles Tyler posts have some sort of political lead in, aspect to, or derivative of somewhere in the content.  Just another perspective on your statement.

Totally OT, but I'm far more interested in what's happening on the Syrian-Turkish border. This little upstart of a country (Syria) is giving the finger to a big, bad NATO power (Turkey) and NATO is powerless to do anything about it at all. And the Syrians wouldn't be doing it without full permission from their paymasters at the Kremlin, whose halls, I'm sure, are filled with laughter at the old enemy's impotence. Interesting times.
