Housekeeping: Strange Behavior

Zero Hedge's picture

No, we don't mean the markets. We ran a server changeover last night which meant tampering with some DNS settings.  As a result you may experience dizziness, hot flashes, and issues with logins.  You might try (in order):

Sitting down.

A cold compress.

Clearing your browser's cache and/or waiting for the DNS update to gel with your local ISP.

In any event, the symptoms are temporary and will abate in their own time.  If you continue to have trouble, drop Marla an email via marla@zh.

Thanks for the heads up, I thought my stuff had gone bad and was about to flush it.

Clearing my cache is something I would prefer to do in private but thanks for the update on why I needed to log in every 2 hours.

i did the oldest known trick in fixing a computer; i turned it off and turned it on; and everything was A-OK afterwards. Also, my cache is empty ( does this last sentence even makes sense ? O_o )

ipconfig /flushdns

Hot flashes?  Marla is too young to have her own personal summer.

followed by

ipconfig /registerdns

Grab a cup of coffee, wait 5 minutes, and everything should be fine

Followed by format c:

/registerdns only really required to register your pc in Dynamic-DNS. Flush should do the trick.

On the server side, lower the TTL of the specific A record, or entire zone (domain) prior to migration. This reduces time to propagate.

either that or the nsa is...well, you know....

The NSA is trying to...well you know.

There has been enough information released over the past 10 years, including code inadvertently released by Microsoft AND Apple that shows suspicious back doors, to lead me to believe that the NSA and many other "intelligence services" have full access to your computer any time they wish.

The same goes for the so-called "security" companies that sell us ready made software firewalls and "updates." Assume you are compromised and act accordingly.

Purchase an actual hardware firewall and then independently configure it. I'm sure Marla and ZH are doing the same.

It's funny if you throw out the Department of Defenses usable IP's. They start going to the banking systems usable IP's and then they start using Microsofts. LOL With a few trips to strangely named california presidents college of various stupidities.

A bit dated.

Only NSA can listen, so that's OK

I am constantly amazed by how otherwise intelligent and reasonable people get down right angry with me or call me conspiratorial when I tell them to protect their computers from "official" snooping.

People are so indoctrinated into the American myth that the NSA, CIA etc will only spy on the "bad" guys (and the CIA only works overseas). Besides, they wouldn't ever think of invading your privacy because you're an American citizen.

"It's against the law" I'm told, so they don't do it.

They're so desperate to believe this that they reject outright any evidence to the contrary. It's pathetic.

Even after the public revelations about the Bush "official" snooping, these people don't think those privacy invasions were that bad. AND it has most definitely stopped so what's the problem.

Except of course for the "bad" guys. When I ask how they would know who the bad guys are, I get a blank stare back and then they storm off.

Children practicing magical thinking.

They also did the Security Enhanced linux stuff. So you can't keep them out of your system with linux they just cant do NEARLY as much snooping on you as with windows. I can keep them out of windows with peer guardian. But if they get ahold of the right place. Be it Googles or Yahoo's  or anyone like that's IP hole finder it's over.

...or just use OpenDNS for your DNS servers. Lightning fast name resolution and, if you create a free account, all kinds of content filtering all completely free.

Best thing ever....

Have we lost the ability to get Zero Hedge feeds using IE?

Thanks, Marla, but I'm still at a loss for what to do. I lost my feed a couple days ago, and I don't see anything listed that correlates to IE. But then I'm new to such feeds and maybe I just don't know which one to select..

All of these issues were due to a bad timestamp on one of the servers. That's been corrected, but it might take an hour for things to iron themselves out for recent comments. Feeds should work properly now.

yeah i was WTF when i saw the time on the comments +0200 from my time zone. i thought your servers were located in Moscow or Minsk.

It worked!  Oh, if you knew the problems I had last night.  I got caught in a Kafkaesque loop answer Captcha questions over and over and over...

I better call the local Elementary School and cancel my admission application I submitted yesterday after failing five successive CAPTCHA questions!
