It's just a Boeing 787 with its cockpit on fire. Nothing to see here.

I was a civilian contractor for the Navy (NAVSEA) in the late '80's, working on submarines  (both missile and attack) and we regularly fired non-warhead missiles for test purposes, as I recall, almost all of them were aimed at Kwajalein Atoll, for testing anti-missile defenses.

People are missing the point.  If it was a plane NORAD would know for sure because it would IMMEDIATELY appear in radar recordings.  This is specially true because it clearly is not a commercial liner with the multiple contrail characteristic of a high altitude commercial multiple engine jet airplane.

There is a possibility that it could be a test of a protoype scramjet/ramjet or other classified plane, but then that would be a pretty sloppy flight test.  It would fit the one engine characteristic and a contrail that is slightly too small for an ICBM but too large for a jet.

Denial would then be justified as any film footage could be used by foreign militaries to analyze the plane's performance.  This is the most likely scenario

There is the other far out possibility that it is a JL-2 test fired from a Golf Class Chinese sub.  JL-2 would are not ICBM's they are submarine launched missles; much smaller and solid fueled (which leaves smaller contrails than liquid/oxygen engines).  More like a scud missle.  I imagine its contrail would be about equivalent to what appears in the video.  This would be weird, because it would be a near act of war and relations between the US and China are orders of magnitude better than that.  Would make no sense.

This is what a Chinese submarine missle launch looks like.  There are some similarities:

There's a fairly restrained, mostly technical discussion of this on the WUWT (WattsUpWithThat.Com) site, with lots of new ideas and videos supportive ofvarious scenarios. Initially the comments are supportive of the contrail idea, but later posters shoot that down, it seems to me.

But the new ideas / "takes" are the best part.

I'm guessing Iranians armed with hedge-trimmers hijacked a U.S. nuke sub and attempted a strike on Hollywood.  It may take a day or two for one of their passports to wash ashore.

are you suggesting that Marla is a neoconservative. That she has been planting Iranian passports across the continent in the places with the highest likelihood of accidents?

LMAO. Perhaps...

Mmmm... how will the world end..

a) By accident - most likely a stray missile explodes, nerves break and a Dick Cheney type character or a Putin or some rogue Chinese sub commander ends it all...

b) On purpose (by Dr. Strangelove characters - insane- or idiots that for some reason think there will be survivors (fueled by Hollywood - i.e. Terminator, Mad Max, etc.)

c) It won't end you depressed anti war fool. War is what makes the world go round boy, yes me boy...

Never mind the Cuban Missile Crisis. In 1983 the Russians thought we they were under attack but just before they shut the lights off, a sober officer explained why it was only a bug in their system. 99.9999% of the people on this planet either don't know that occured, don't give a shit or still do not know how close that was. Several nukes have been lost and/or accidently dropped by the US Air Force just in the past year. Last month a Russian ballistic missile misfired from a sub. The Russians just made a stunning announcement claiming their missiles can outmaneuver our defenses - a claim not made by either side since the 70s !!!!  This automatically invalidates MAD in the eyes of the already insane war game "elite". You see, if we do not answer with a balancing defensive play, then the balance of nuclear power is off kilter as one side presumably now believes it could win a nuclear confrontation. Of course most military professionals know it is not true but there exists an element that believes it to be true - and therein lies the true madness...  does one call the bluff ? Bottom line: just in the past few months the nuclear clock has ticked closer to midnight.

Point ?  Get out there consumers. Shop like there is no tomorrow ! Screw that savings account, that ridiculously

hopeless and stagnant 401k. For God's sake get out there and get laid.

From the comments of a CNN article that had an "expert" saying the whole thing was the contrail of an airplane flying level towards the camera, creating an illusion of ascension.

Comment:

"That was no airplane contrail. I saw the event first hand. What you don't see in this photo is a faint, transparent, blue/green clear funnel that crosses over the white/orange contrail. It was as if something else had streaked across the atmosphere. I remember this distinctly because it was so strange that it caught my attention as I was walking across a parking lot all the way in Irvine and I live at the beach. The blue/green funnel shaped anamoly was so large, distinct and strange it caught my attention more than the contrail. I didn't give the contrail a second thought, but I stopped and stared at the funnel for quite sometime."

Any missile or military types know what kind of missile has a blue/green signature?

I've seen green signature missile trails out of Edwards at sunset before. Was actually looking for it as I watched the Friday launch from Vandenberg but it was too dark and I was too far away.

Most likely an ICBM. First thought to be a Tomahawk but contrails too small. This was large. Very large- at a distance of 40+ miles from view, it was so large...

Nothing new, US has been testing new silent warplane for almost ten years now. If you live in Silicon Valley, every few days you can see similar airplane flies over silently with long white smoking. This time they maybe test new engine.

Please folks, it was an unarmed ICBM launch from a nuclear sub.

I used to live in San Diego, and we would see our subs headed out to Catalina island all the time.

Chinese subs have been chasing ours and our aircraft carriers around the Pacific lately.

This is us saying "Pearl Harbor".

What was the result of that?  Hmmm....

Kill or be killed.

BREAKING NEWS:

"OFFICIAL" Gov't Response- "Amateur" rocket fired from California Coast.

Translation: Do not look behind the curtain!

JLR's researched response- ICBM test missile from Navy submarine, flexing of US muscle, demonstrating to China we still have "big guns."

JLR's sugar coated response for ZH- Obama's private escape pod (ie. Dr. Evil's escape pod), launching to unknown planet for safety. Launch took place on word from NASA, within 2 weeks, an unknown energy source will be opening up our magnetic shield causing widespread devistation, fricken idiots!

Of course I think we all know anyone waiting for a truthful explanation from the government would be better off waiting for 12 inches of snow at miami's south beach.

They very well know what it is and as usual covering it up.  I think it was our own launch.

"It can't belong to anyone but the military," said Marco Caceres, an analyst with Teal Group Corp., a Fairfax, Va.-based aerospace research firm. The appearance of such a massive rocket contrail near military bases that are known for regularly testing missiles is unlikely to be a coincidence, Caceres said.
