Indiana Braces For Violence, Adds Armed Guards To Unemployment Offices In Anticipation Of 99-Week Jobless Benefits Expiration
As America reaches its two year anniversary from the immediate economic collapse that followed the Lehman bankruptcy, punctuated mostly by vast and broad layoffs across every industry, arguably the most relevant topic that few are so far discussing is the expiration of full 99 weeks of maximum claims (EUC + Extended Benefits) for cohort after cohort of laid off Americans. And since these people are certainly not finding jobs in the broader labor market (which continues to contract and thus make the unemployment percentage far better optically than the 10%+ where U-3 should be), their next natural response will be to get very angry at the teat that has suckled them for so long, and is now forcing them to go cold turkey. Which is why we read with little surprise that now in Indiana, and soon everywhere else, unemployment offices are starting to add armed security guards. Of course, the official explanation if a benign one: "Armed security guards will be on hand at 36 unemployment offices around Indiana in what state officials said is a step to improve safety and make branch security more consistent." Why the need to improve safety all of a sudden? The 99 weeks cliff of course. Which means that on your next trek to the unemployment office to collect that last stimulus paycheck from Uncle Sam, you will most likely see the masked fellow below.

More from Indiana news on what is a harbinger of things to come.
No specific incidents prompted the action, Department of Workforce Development spokesman Marc Lotter told 6News' Norman Cox.
Lotter said the agency is merely being cautious with the approach of an early-December deadline when thousands of Indiana residents could see their unemployment benefits end after exhausting the maximum 99 weeks provided through multiple federal extension periods.
"Given the upcoming expiration of the federal extensions and the increased stress on some of the unemployed, we thought added security would provide an extra level of protection for our employees and clients," he said. Some offices have had guards for nearly two years but those guards were hired on a regional basis, meaning some offices had armed guards while others did not, Lotter said.
The cost of the armed guards varies dramatically around the state. Lotter said the agency is trying to be more consistent and that it plans to employ armed guards in all 36 offices where unemployment insurance benefits are handled.
The overall cost for the security is $1 million, paid for with federal funds designated for administration of the unemployment system, Lotter said.
Other agency offices that provide job training or are not full-service branches will continue to have unarmed guards.
Lotter said state employees in the affected offices have also recently gone through stress-management training in which they learn how to respond appropriately to angry clients.
"This is a stressful time for people in the economy," he said. "That's why we're not only taking this step (of hiring guards), but we're also increasing our training for our staff to be able to help people as they're trying to cope with these changes."
Next up: armed guards at your local social security office, grocery store, and soon, everywhere else.

Proof? Some small effort to back up your statements is normally considered proper. Your suppositions regarding her "witches" does not qualify.
Also, answer my question how does the"O" surpass her and McCain?
Wingnut, hmmm.. Okay, if that is the best you can do.
Both were horrible choices. You're really tricking yourself if you think republicans and democrats have anything but superficial differences between them. It's always the choice between a douche and a turd sandwich (no offence T. Ferguson). You'll always pick the wrong one who will make the situation worse, because picking either dem or republican candidates is the wrong choice.
Finally, if you think those are your only two choices, you're the reason we're stuck in a two party rut.
dr,
I agree neither was the choice I personally looked forward to making but the original question was not "are both rotten choices" it was McCain /Palin would be better, yes IMO they would have been better. Politics is often times picking the lesser poison of course it is not optimal but I live in the real world with real choices and they are not always easy or optimal but necessary.
This made me smile:
"but I live in the real world with real choices"
...and there are only two of them...McCain/Palin OR Obama/Biden.
Sorry, but I'm not buying the false dichotomy. Rather than sinking into that swamp, I would rather spend my energy trying to convince people that the two party system is a bunch of BS and that participating in it is antithetical to their interests.
dr,
Let me know when your balls get big enough or drop enough to run for office. Put up or shut up. You keyboard commandos are all about the false dichotomys and the thrid option.. Ok, what have you done to convince people of the third option, or tell us about your efforts toward establishing the viable option. I am out busting my ass to make sure you have a second option. You may not like it but in the real world developing the third option or improving the second option takes real work.
My testicles are wonderful, and thank you for asking.
"what have you done to convince people of the third option"
The first thing I do is call out every instance I see of people engaging in a pre-scripted elephant/ass debate when it is painfully and unmistakably obvious that both teams play against the citizenry.
You say you're not convinced that the system truly is broken. I ask you, what would it take for you to be convinced?
Could have written in "Ron Paul"
Or Pat Paulson. Or even my name. I coulda done better. Of course the TBTF would have a hit out on me, just like they offed Lincoln and JFK.
Yes, I could have done that and accomplished zero not even send a message. I still believe incremental positive chnage is possible within the system, I may be wrong. I am here to learn more and be convinced that this change is no longer possible, politically or economically. When that is proven beyond my personal tolerance line I will do more than I am currently to change the system.
I always vote 3rd party, and almost never pick a winner. If those of you in the 'lesser of two evils' camp would join me, it might be less of a blowout. Hey, eventually, we may even put one of our people in a position of power. This is the only way I see incremental positive change occuring within the system. Your idea of incremental change within the system will not be achieved by voting for the replicrat/demicon minions.
I was aware of what the original question was, I just wanted to point out how it was the wrong question to be asking. The correct question would be, 'is there any other choice'? It seems I believe the system is broken and you believe it can be changed from the inside. Evidence for the former?Well, let's just think backwards in time from right now to (fill in blank)_____ [1963? 1945? 1913?...pick your end-point].
Hold out hope for change as long as you want to, but that boat left for me awhile ago.
Vote 3rd party or don't vote at all.
I vote mostly for the local initiatives ... so they don't raise my taxes. I think State and Local is not so bad but the Federal level is totally rigged so, for that, I do the same thing ... vote 3rd party.
You hit the nail on the head here and if dr would stick with changing the school board, the town board, the county commission, the state legislature and on he could stop the crowing about always voting for the third option. Yep, makes you my hero you had the balls to pull the curtain closed and then all by yourself, check the third option, we are all so proud.. I understand voting third party, you think people like me don't want to do this too. But explain what you are personally doing to change the local races, the local pol's put yourself on the line.
Dropped off some flyers today, made some calls?? what..

And, what rodeo said.
Why all the junks people, did someone find one of his published papers from the Harvard law review, perhaps you located his college transcripts? No, how about locating his GPA.. HA... Oh yeah, GWB's GPA was higher than the Goracles... Ha

"This is a stressful time for people in the economy," he said. "That's why we're not only taking this step (of hiring guards), but we're also increasing our training for our staff to be able to help people as they're trying to cope with these changes."
Unemployed: "Where's my check?"
Staff member: "I'm sorry buy you've milked the system enough."
Unemployed: "What am I suppose to do?"
Staff member: "Get a job. Security!!!"
This should go over nicely...
Oughta let TSA take over the U office security. They're efficient, well trained, top quality folk, the structure, management, order, delineated lines of responsibility and authority are already in place, part of DHS (Aren't the FEMA camps, too?) trusted and respected by the public for courteous, friendly, humble public service demeanor, kind, caring and understanding, helpful, entrepreneurial, insightful, courageous, independent, service oriented, and acutely aware of the local community nature of the public efforts they provide. Have I missed anything?
intelligent
You da man, Uncle Remus. Between "intelligent" and "yemeny", the best.
Many thanks for many laughs.

Hey!
You gotta quit dong this to me!
You give me a captcha quiz which is something like...
"-63 minus 45 = [ ]"
and I fill -108 in the box and the machine comes back and says that the answer has to be no more than 3 digits and mine's 4 and its the correct answer and do you have any clue, the faintest idea of the discomfort and immolation of self-esteem and confidence you're causing me. I mean every God-damned time I gotta do one of these things mow, I have to get out my Donald Duck Pull On His Arm Thing or Whatever the Happy Lever Is Calculator and listen to the table shake and cha-ching build my frail confidence, nay unwarrantedly elevate unreasonable expectations and then whoosh, have the rug pulled out from under me, facing the agony of defeat, the ultimate rejection.
It's cruel. It's just not kind, gentle and caring of your fellow man, especially me. And if that's the way the world is, so be it, but some of us deserve (like me, fot it'd be wrong for me to speak for any others) some very special dispensation for no reason whatsoever, at all. (Pretty please.) I mean, one of these days, it's gonna come down to Workman's Comp with a complete nervous breakdown. (Sympathy) And do you know how much paper work that shit is? (Empathetic appeal) I mean, that's just wrong. (Human element) I'll wind up pouting forever (Victimization) feeling like I've been removed from the front row of the destruction of the Big Pagoda in the Sky.
Cliff Note Version; Is it just me that's mathematically handicapped?
Help!
Rejected by a machine.
(Makes me feel like wanting rubber glove jobs.)
It's the captcha. Or a balance test.
So'd I make it OK?
You want mo unemployment? Well say hello to my little friend!
.
He looks like the (half asleep) bayside rapist.
Only 2 years of benefits, WTF!
LOL
I would short violence in Indiana. Good people. Not likely.
'Good people' starve and riot too.

Good for those of us in the security guard business...
This will end any standing and arguing or unseemly raising of the voice. Insist there was a mistake and you will get the free ride downtown.

Rat business looks like a winner! Any Rat related IPOs coming along?
No Need for the Armed Guards at the USPS, they just shoot it out whenever. They to need to privatize this, how mnay billions have been thrown at them?.
And the benefits, payscale, and retirement are typical, and they wonder WHY they cannot compete?.
At my local PO, there are six counter stations, usually manned by two people, even when it's busy. There are at least three or four other USPS employees standing around, drinking coffee or playing with their privates.
Recently, they installed a self-service machine which handles just about every transaction, so I use it all the time. Even when the line is short for the "people" service line, I'll go to the machine, even if there are people lined up for it. It has always proven to be faster.
USPS employees are the most overpaid, worthless bunch of fucktards on the planet. Machines can do their jobs just as well, and BTW, who the hell would be harmed if mail wasn't delivered on Saturdays? The fat fuckers who get overtime, that's who. Fuck them.
Indiana wants me, Lord I can't go back there.

Dude, have you checked out the cost of ammo? Better use that last check for a box of 9mm. Sell your gun after you shoot yourself -- is that it?
Wearing masks? Whatcha got to hide, public-union-member/pension-receiving-hopeful? Pieces of scrap worth shooting your fellow people?
(Sorry, making cynical digs at a picture is not productive, but it is soothing to the soul, if only for the moment)
Wait a sec! That's a stock photo. Damn you Tyler, for riling me up.

What kind of misanthrope writes this garbage? Really, it's bad enough that racists, misogynists and all manner of conspiracy theorists write amid the decent econ analysis...but this? For crying out loud, these "cohorts" are citizens of this country, more than that, they are human beings. What's with the bitter, angry hatred toward everyone? Whatever happened to you.....it's time to settle it within yourself and move on. It's called growing up.
This is just the beginning.
Juno, I don't see this as a mean comment. The reality is we are putting our country at risk by deficit spending. There are cheaper alternatives to unemployment checks, such as living with family/friends, downsizing, or worst case soup kitchens and homeless shelters. I have two friends on the verge but they cannot take checks because one is self-employed and the other is just out of college. I have volunteered to take them in if it comes down to it. This period is worse than the Great Depression, but it has not sunk in because we are putting it all on one big tab which future generations will have to pay.
Growing up is accepting reality and taking responsibility, not passing the buck.

What little pea shooter is he sporting, by looking at the two magazines looks like a 9mm, HK417 is the way to go. Here in Texas everyone has fine weapons, ready to do battle.

that is the first shrewd move the dems have ever made

Keltec Sub2000, with the glock mags, not for over 150 yards but city folk wont use that much field.
the only keltec that I have every owned is the lil itty bitty .380 w/ hydrashocks... nice little pocket gun... mod a money clip and wrap some money around it and when a bad guys asks for you cash... hand it too him..

Nice bend to that metal... but for a pocket gun to protect yourself from being robbed... cant beat it... well you could with a chain gun... but you know what I mean.
All the jokes are fun and all --however it won't be so funny when some hungry dude hits ya over the head and grabs your wallet........... I'm just sayin!
I am not going to shoot or hurt (if I can at all help it) a hungry person.. I give money away daily to what most would call bums... and I would do my very best to feed any hungry man woman or child... and I would defend the defenseless and do my best to Love the Un-Loved... but God has been good to me and its the least I can do.
Actually, I'm one of the lucky ones that didn't really 'feel' the crisis. But, I know plenty that did and still do. They aren't happy 'bilking' the measly unemployment issurance and I haven't met one single soul yet that is on unemployment that doesn't want to work. Not...one...person...nada...zilch...nyet...kein.
I agree. My neighbor with 4 kids was unemployed for a year before finally finding something that paid 30% less. 2 of his kids are in college and one had to drop out, come live at home and go to the local Community College because he couldn't afford the living expenses. There are a lot of people suffering out there. Even though there are are a few that game the system, its not right to generalize and blame the victims.

The Police mask is the mask of shame. Shame for himself for "just doing his job". If he has to start pulling the trigger, the amount of guilt he feels should be crushing. Welcome to police state.

I want his pillow full of bite marks and his ears raw from the pulling... Penal, you got it... Infirmary scene in Papillion would do nicely..
See below, me and knuckles got it figured out.
No dear, the Penis farm. You know, the "pick a peck of peni, pick a peck a day" routine. Or was that bales of cotton? I get distracted easily.
Like asparagus! My mind was already there!
Let's work on that, shall we:
Me and my Banker gonna pick a peck of peckers,
Me and my Banker gonna pick a peck of pricks.
Oh Lloydie, pick a peck of peckers,
Oh Lloydie, pick a peck of pricks.
Yes! Awesome!
The wheels are falling of the cart over there in Indi:
Ind. parents told drop disabled kids at shelters
(AP) – 4 days ago
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana's budget crunch has become so severe that some state workers have suggested leaving severely disabled people at homeless shelters if they can't be cared for at home, parents and advocates said.
They said workers at Indiana's Bureau of Developmental Disabilities Services have told parents that's one option they have when families can no longer care for children at home and haven't received Medicaid waivers that pay for services that support disabled people living independently...
But some families have been on waiting lists for waivers for 10 years. The lists contained more than 20,000 names last month, and one advocacy group predicted they will only grow longer because Gov. Mitch Daniels ordered budget cuts that have eliminated 2,000 waiver slots since July.
Budget cuts also have resulted in the state moving foster children with disabilities to a lower cost program that doesn't provide services for special needs and eliminating a grocery benefit for hundreds of developmentally disabled adults.
you will see the security guards. you'll never see the drones. were doomed
Xe (Blackwater) is ready for trouble - hiring like crazy. No overseas experience needed. Local assignments - home to bed every night. They also have a list - expect visitors.
Just kidding. Really. Nothing to it. Pure imagination. Relax. have another one.
Somebody will start shooting. I finally left my apt after 8 days inside. A gunman here on a bicycle shot 3, killed 2, random people in a 5 block radius. A 13 year old girl survived. Canada sucks.
The timing is poor. They should extend benefits another 6 months. And then how could they end benefits just before May Day. What a mess.
Why would anyone working in China be making any retirement plans other than chemo therapy?
Now that is an entirley reasonable, insightful question.
And as the follow-up Mrs. Clinton, here it is for your next meeting with Premier Whoz Holdinc Minutsac.
"Would you like me get you more 30 year treasuries yielding 0.01%, Mr. Wong?
I live in Indiana, and it's not about safety for the people who visit there. It's mainly to do about the end of the extensions and the angry people who will be coming into the place saying "You owe me another week" etc. etc.. We may start seeing armed guards at grocery stores, when people start to get robbed or the store itself by desperate people. We may see armed guards at the SS buildings and offices when the coming cuts in Social Security benefits for people hurt or under the retirement age happens.
Buck, I said this before, it is like this in my town now. Armed guards at ALL of the following:
Licence registration (there were two there when I got my permit).
Tag renewal office (always has been one there).
Comcast (I had to stand in line to get a new router from them, they had three there).
Electricity/utilities (two)
Grocery stores, every single one of them. On site and they have a rent a cop patrolling the parking lot. Mind you, a guard at one place I shopped ended up using his authority to rape a young shopper.
My favorite restaurant, slightly upscale, I go there weekly, so I know.
My place of employment has a small police force, many cars, many stations around campus (at least 4).
My son's school is crawling with cops.
My bank? NOOOOO! Used to but I have not seen a security guard in months. Really weird, one place I am cool with it.
I am having a difficult time not thinking of a place that does not have security or pay for shared security (like strip malls).
Ah, my coffee place, except wait... cops come in and strong arm the employees for free coffee. One prick comes in and takes his gun out, puts it on the counter, and orders his free coffee, then goes next door for free tacos. Never mind, guess they have a cop, sort of.
Bad cop.
Really bad cop. They don't make them any worse than that. You are in a C.A. -- crisis area -- a place of killing where anyone who sticks their head up will be shot. You are in a war zone and that cop thinks he is back in Binladinstan and everyone around him is an enemy including the skinny punk pulling his coffee. And he likes thinking that because he wants to kill you.
When the riots start that guy will be at the front of the police line with an assault rifle killing teenagers. Watch for him. Fear him. Run the other way. He's going to put a bullet in your head at a distance and he will enjoy it. He will have the automatic backing of his entire police force all the way to the Mayor and he knows it and you will have exactly zip and an impact crater where your head used to be.
Bad. Cop. Bad. System. Run. Away.
It was good to read this. Oddly, it has become so normal to everyone that when I expressed the idea it gave me the creeps, that the gun should stay in his holster (he would lay it on the table and drink some times) people thought there was nothing wrong with what he was doing. Always bugged me.
Sucks where you live. East LA? Detroit? The Bronx?
The only cops we have around here are the ones making money for the city by harassing drivers going a perfectly reasonable 5 over the speed limit.
Maybe you should move. Its a big country!
cops have a pension under water, of course they're out taxing the citizenry.
to serve and "protect".
these guys used to protect some pubs round the east end of london the same way:

I'm disappointed with the ZH sensationalism on this story. Way over the hedge with that picture of the swat guy.
The actual article says:
And they are talking about "beefing-up security". That usually means lots of beef in a blue shirt. About 300 pounds of it sweating in the corner.
Doubtful the sheep will do anything unless it's a made-for-Larry King-moment.
Nothing new here. Move on.
You see a single step, probably well-intended.
The rest of us see a road to Hell thickly paved with such good intentions.
If you are right and we don't listen to you, then we're all dummies.
If you are wrong and we didn't listen, then we still have a chance to save the world.
See? That's how this game works. If you take any of this seriously, then that's how it works.
+1 "The rest of us see a road to Hell thickly paved with such good intentions."
