International Citizens Radiation Monitoring Network

If we could rely on the Japanese and American governments to inform us of any danger, we wouldn't have to be so vigilant.

But given the American government's cover up of the severity of the BP oil disaster, the health risk to New Yorkers after 9/11, and numerous other health issues, we will have to educate ourselves.

For example, the U.S. Surgeon General has recommended that West Coast residents stock up with potassium iodide, while other government officials say that is unnecessary, because radiation levels will not be high enough. But no government has disclosed radiation readings in the West Coast, so we can't verify for ourselves whether or not there is currently any danger. See this and this.

As the San Jose Mercury News reports:

EPA officials, however, refused to answer questions or make staff members available to explain the exact location and number of monitors, or the levels of radiation, if any, being recorded at existing monitors in California. Margot Perez-Sullivan, a spokeswoman at the EPA's regional headquarters in San Francisco, said the agency's written statement would stand on its own.

Critics said the public needs more information.

"It's disappointing," said Bill Magavern, director of Sierra Club California. "I have a strong suspicion that EPA is being silenced by those in the federal government who don't want anything to stand in the way of a nuclear power expansion in this country, heavily subsidized by taxpayer money."

Mainichi Daily News reports reports that Japanese citizens are outraged over the lack of information forthcoming from the government:

Residents who have been evacuated after a radiation leak from a quake-hit nuclear power plant have expressed their anger with the lack of information about the incident and how to respond to it.

As ABC News notes, experts say that Japan has a long history of nuclear cover-ups.

The New York Times points out:

The different radioactive materials being reported at the nuclear accidents in Japan range from relatively benign to extremely worrisome.
The central problem in assessing the degree of danger is that the amounts of various radioactive releases into the environment are now unknown, as are the winds and other atmospheric factors that determine how radioactivity will disperse around the stricken plants.

BBC reports (scroll down on left side):

Japanese engineer Masashi Goto, who helped design the containment vessel for Fukushima's reactor core, says the design was not enough to withstand earthquakes or tsunami ...

Indeed, Goto said:

“It is difficult to say, but that would be a core meltdown. If the rods fall and mix with water, the result would be an explosion of solid material like a volcano spreading radioactive material. Steam or a hydrogen explosion caused by the mix would spread radioactive waste more than 50km. Also, this would be multiplied. There are many reactors in the area so there would be many Chernobyls.

And Goto accused the Japanese government of deliberately withholding vital information that would allow outside experts help solve the problems:

For example, there has not been enough information about the hydrogen being vented. We don’t know how much was vented and how radioactive it was.

The former editor of the Japan Times - Yoichi Shimatsu - states that after a high-level government meeting, “Japanese agencies are no longer releasing independent reports without prior approval from the top,” and that censorship of what is really occurring at the plant is being overseen under the Article 15 Emergency Law.

France is also accusing Japan of downplaying the nuclear threat.

And Haarertz notes:

Since the Japanese government has not provided accurate information regarding the possible threat posed by the explosion at the Fukushima nuclear power plant, experts in Israel and abroad are divided on the scope of the disaster and the ramifications for the environment.

There are some very incomplete real-time monitoring networks such as this and this (both of which are both run by companies which sell geiger counters). But the number of monitors is very small and incomplete.

So we must harness the power of the Internet in order to educate ourselves.

How?

Simple ... Everyone who has a geiger counter can post a live stream to the web like this guy:

Live video chat by Ustream
(and these guys).

Make sure you give your location (city, state and country) so people know where you are, the make and model of your geiger counter, and the units of radiation being counted (i.e. counts per minute, milli-roentgens per hour or micro-sieverts per hour).

When enough people do this, we will have a citizens radiation monitoring network, and we won't have to be blind or helpless due to the lack of information coming from governments ... we will have the real information.

In Phoenix, AZ, we've been at normal levels (unsurprisingly, I think tomorrow is the first day we could possibly get anything via jet stream, and there was nothing subtantial to "get" last friday.)

Norml levels being .15 uSV/h, approximate 4.2 uSv/day.

I have no doubt there will be a significant amount of non-governmental readings available as long as the internet or ham radio is working.

Iodine -

A product my wife and I used years ago when backpacking called "polarpure" , was a small 1 ounce brown glass bottle with iodine crystals in it . Iodine crystals are slightly water soluble , jar was shaken with water ( over 60 deg. ) and dumped into drinking water bottles- killed bacterias . I also happen to have a 8 ounce bottle of Iodine crystals , so with some simple lab work can make all the 7% solution a 10 thousand families would need for a one week dose skin coverage . But alas - all Io tincture protects from is I 131 , and NO OTHER radiation isotopes - the cesium will still get you , not to mention - U or plutonium isotopes

Jesus George - again, Iodide is useful only to protect against radioactive isotopes of iodine. Radioactive Iodine has a half-life of 7 days. Look again at your WORST-CASE SCENARIO for JET-STREAM distributed radiation. Keep in mind this iodine must REACH the jet-stream at 30,000 feet and must occur in large enough concentrations (after being transported thousands of miles in high-speed winds) to actually cause you damage.

There is zero reason for anyone in the continental US to take doses of iodine due to potential contamination from JAPAN. ZERO. You have significantly more risk of developing cancer from corexit in Gulf Coast seafood than from this contamination - and as you know I place that risk at zero as well.

Yep, people need to realise that there have been HUNDREDS of atmospheric atomic and thermonuclear muniton detonations in history (many of them in Nevada).

This event in Japan is going to be far less significant than one single high-altitude high-yield airburst over the pacific, and there were several of those from the USA alone, and next to nothing happened. We didn't all get cancer and grow a third eye. If you're a deer that eats Siberian lichen for a living you might possibly get a cancer.

I always thought Y2K was silliness, mainly since I knew a lot of programmers who were milking that cash cow writing COBOL all during the late '90s.

But from my perspective, there is a real risk here. How much I don't know, but how is it a bad thing to have information you can believe in? The big problem many people in Japan are facing is the problem of *uncertainty*. I think that problem will be shared in the US, and if the data shows the levels are low, and that the radiation "dissipates" as the USG is now claiming, then we will *know* that the levels are low and can remain reasonably calm.

On the other hand, if the levels start spiking, I think that might have an effect on many peoples' decisions. In my opinion, there is no situation that is improved through ignorance.

The jet stream flows from West to East, and last I checked (yep, just reconfirmed with Google maps) London is West of Chernobyl.

You also seem to be forgetting that Europe didn't tell their citizens about increased radiation until well AFTER the danger has passed. Heck, excess radiation WAS recorded in the states from the Chernobyl disaster and somehow you think a closer disaster will magically have less effect?

When Chernobyl blew up, there was doom ad gloom in the UK media about the radioactive clouds heading our way. We're all still here and Chernobyl is closer to the UK than Japan is to the USA.

Now, whether the overall level of background radiation globally is on the increase, not least because of all the atomic tests, is another question.

Great idea GW. I received a geiger counter yesterday and have collected some data (around 14 hours worth). Average value is 23 CPM, with a standard deviation of 6.7 CPM. Minimum of 8 CPM, and a maximum of 48 CPM.

So far, I'm not seeing anything above background radiation, but who knows what might happen. If one or more of the spent fuel pools goes up in smoke, it almost certainly will end up here, although the big question is how much above background. Location = Central Oregon coast range, near Corvallis. The device is a hobbyist circuit with a standard geiger tube: http://www.sparkfun.com/products/9848. Someone from Tokyo also purchased the same model, so maybe they will post data at this webpage. If so, I'll pass it along.

We also have another geiger counter, Russian made I believe. Results are comparable, although I want to order a calibration reference to see how close it is to a standard. Both counters give similar results when pointed at a smoke alarm, which typically uses Americium.

It would be nice if someone created a website where all this kind of data could go, that didn't depend on purchasing commercial software. For now, I was thinking the easiest thing to do would be to send the data to a twitter feed.

We are located in North America. I asked one of the our Japanese staff (here) today how she was doing. She looked at me and broke into tears that later became sobs as I gave her a hug.

Her Father, Mother and older brother are in a small town about 100Kmh from the nuclear plants. The radiation there is approx 50 times normal at the moment and while she was planning to visit them in two weeks they have told her to stay away.

I asked her if they were planning to leave the area and she said there were not because her father works in a local gas station and wants to serve. I suggested that maybe they could come here (at least her brother) and visit for a few months until more was understood. She said that her brother had just become a volunteer fire fighter in thier town and was going to stay and that as long as the government said it was okay that they would not leave....

The Japanese are an honor bound disciplined people who trust their leaders and yet they are a democratic country.

Those leaders who know the discipline and resolve and deferment to leadership of their people better be telling the truth. They BETTER BE TELLING THE FUCKING TRUTH!

Topical Iodine Applications

There has been some interesting research, though, with both humans and dogs into topically (on the skin) applied Povidone-Iodine (10%) solution (such as Betadine? or Povidex? solutions), and also with tincture of iodine, to test the absorption rates of iodine directly through the skin. But, it was found not to be as quick in providing thyroid blocking as oral Potassium Iodide (KI) or KIO3, nor as consistent, and then, often, at lower levels of protection. Questions remain of skin irritation, determining the amount of Iodine solution to apply, where best to apply it, how long to apply it, and the effects of temperature and humidity on absorption through the skin. Also, insufficient testing has been done on specific groups, such as infants, children, and pregnant and nursing women to know how effective it would be and the full range of complications that could be expected with repeated applications. For instance, the skin absorption of iodine products in neonates with inhibition of thyroid function has been documented in the past. The use of Povidone-Iodine is the most frequent cause of this type of intoxication. Another study showed that Povidone-Iodine did not significantly influence neonatal thyroid function if they were used to a full term neonate only once and even to a wide skin surface.

Another source, non-medical, claims that by using the stronger 7% tincture iodine and just dipping the index finger of the person being treated up to the first knuckle (just above the fingernail) would provide the proper dosing. They claim this would work for all people as our fingers are roughly proportionate to our size and weight. That may be true, but that this technique would actually provide sufficient quantity and effective absorption of iodine for thyroid-blocking has not been verified. (Additional documentation and source references have been requested of that author. And, will be promptly posted here if provided.)

Clearly more research is needed before embracing the topically applied techniques as a one-size-fits-all solution, as its limitations must first be more fully understood. However...

According to research by Health Physicist Ken Miller, Hershey Medical Center, using 24 healthy adult male subjects, an adult could get a blocking dose of stable iodine by painting 8 ml of a 2 percent tincture of Iodine on the abdomen or forearm approximately 2 hours prior to I-131 contamination. The abstract of his study titled "Effectiveness of Skin Absorption of Tincture of I in Blocking Radioiodine from the Human Thyroid Gland" from Health Physics, June 1989, Vol. 56, No. 6, pages 911-914, (To read abstract, search the title of the article here) states:

"Although there were large variations within each subject group in regard to serum-I levels and thyroid uptakes, the increase in serum-I concentration after topical-I application was effective in reducing the thyroid uptake of I131. The authors conclude that in the absence of KI, most humans would benefit from topical application of tincture of-I, and that in some the effectiveness would equal that of oral KI."

Hmmm... interesting Plan "B"(Betadine?) possibilities here, if in a pinch!

Or you could try NOT acting like morons...........several FACTS to consider: 1) taking potassium idodide protects you against ONE and ONLY ONE form of radiation - radioactive iodine which if it concentrates in your thyroid can cause significant problems; it does not have ANY efficacy against ANY other form or radiation. However 2) radioactive iodine has a half-life of 7 days, this is a VERY short half-life, it means that radioactive iodine disappears from the environment VERY quickly. And yes I know you GW droids are already foaming at the mouth because his previous post showed a lowest possible jet-stream driven contamination of 3 days. BUT - the iodine has to GET TO THE JET STREAM and more importanly that was the LOW END ESTIMATE. And finally it must remain concentrated enough to contaminate you after being carried as dust over thousands of miles in high speed winds.

I know I know - Obama's pet political doctor said it would be good to buy Potassium Iodide as a precaution. She might have consulted any competent physicist first, or is she long pharmaceuticals??????????????? Either way I'm not sure why a group of people so convinced that the government is ALWAYS lying would take anything the government said as gospel..............

@Tamboo, decent info BUT..

We can no longer get 7% (Lugol's solution) and the FDA wants to ban most iodine products outright (Europe already has).

The new "allowed" is a 2% solution. Skip the Betadine and go to a healthfood store to get your liquid (for painting/topical) or pills/tablets. The liquid Lugol's type can be ingested, but NEVER eat the iodine sold as topical for cuts - like Betadine.

Thankfully, I researched this stuff 2 years ago and am sitting on enough iodine to protect my family for about six months.

yeah considering the amount of home weather stations out there. i mean if i was going to blow money on a pointless tool, if i wanna know the weather i can stick my head out the window. no need for a $100 USB tool. but a rad kit, now you're talking.

i looked for an aussie atmopheric radiation station and only one i found was set up by los alamos in darwin. oh and another at our nuke research reactor in canberra. so 2 gfor the whole country.

When I first learned about the Internet, I realized that such a system can be made to withstand world war three back in the Cold War days as long as you can find several computers to communicate with.

That was Decades ago.

I disagree as to their incompetence. Appearing incompetent, protects them from getting hung from lightposts. They only appear to be incompetent, because they lie about their priorities. The fate of "ordinary" humans does not concern them, despite what they say.
