Iran Offers To Escort Gaza Ships
Remember those 3 nuclear-armed subs we wrote about, that Israel had positioned off the coast of Iran, a development which promptly got lost in news about the whole flotilla incident? Well, they may be getting some more press time soon. Jerusalem Post reports that in the latest escalation step, Iran has offered to provide military protection in the form of warship escorts for Gaza activist ships. Needless to say, this introduces another huge variable into the game theoretical stability equation: not a single party has "cooperated" yet, even as more and more parties decide to defect. We are increasingly concerned that this will not have a favorable outcome, as all it takes is one stray button or trigger getting pushed for events to get beyond the point of no return.
Iran would be willing to send its Revolutionary Guard members to accompany further aid ships to Gaza, Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Sunday in an interview cited by Reuters.
"The naval wing of the Revolutionary Guard is ready to assist the peace flotilla to Gaza with all its effort and capabilities," Khamenei's Revolutionary Guard spokesman Ali Shirazi stated.
"If the Supreme Leader issues an order for this then the Revolutionary Guard naval forces will do their best to secure the ships," Shirazi said. "It is Iran's duty to defend the innocent people of Gaza."
Hopefully yesterday's peaceful ship boarding will cool tempers at least marginally, although Bloomberg now reports that "two Israeli ministers said they
opposed an international inquiry into the deadly naval raid on a
Gaza Strip-bound aid flotilla as the United Nations discussed
options for such a commission."
“There shouldn’t be an international inquiry,” Finance
Minister Yuval Steinitz said today. “If an inquiry is required
it should be handled by parliament’s Foreign Affairs and Defense
Committee.” Minister of Science and Technology Daniel
Hershkowitz agreed and said he wouldn’t trust a probe that
included Turkey.
Oddly enough even with the massive escalation in geopolitical tensions in the Persian Gulf, crude has been on a downward trajectory: Is the supply and demand curve so skewed that nothing but China's liquidity situation is a factor in determining oil price any more? Should such Iran-Israel escalations have occurred in the summer of 2008, oil would likely be at $250. Then again, even with estimated supply and demand curves completely irrelevant in this most critical of commodities, Bernanke, you will recall, sees no liquidity bubbles anywhere. And when was the last time the Supreme Chairman was wrong?
Update for our Russian-speaking readers: in the just released unedited version of the radio transmission between the Israeli Navy and the Gaza Flotila, someone in perfectly accentless Russian chimes in: "zaebal uzhe skotina" at 4:21 into the recording, presumably in retaliation for some earlier pleasantries caught on the tape. Israel can block the Palestinians off all they want. What they have to realize is that this kind of strong arming seems to be inviting a military conflict. Right or wrong, who am I to judge what I know next to nothing about. My concern is that I would prefer not to pitch lives into another "conflict" that means nothing to our country outside of someone's bs "strategic interest". Thats all aside from spending even more money we don't have--and yes, I am American. Did you guys hear the nine eleven comment at the end of the transmission? How many times will people use nine eleven to get us into another conflict? When are people going to wake up?

The Israeli government’s initial statements regarding self-defense and selective videos have already been shown to provide distortion and omission of fact. Obviously, this is a major reason why the investigation Israel proposes would not involve non-Israeli investigators.
That bit was almost definitely edited in. It is not at all beyond the Israelis to insert such crude propaganda into their "evidence" because, yes, they really do believe that Americans are stupid and, yes, quite frankly a lot of us are, otherwise we wouldn't still be giving them the support that we do in terms of financial and military aid (to the tune of tens of billions of dollars a year).
As for Big Kahuna's statement, this in fact does involve you, because your country is funding and supporting one side in this fight. I'm all for the US withdrawing our support for Israel 100%, including financial and military. Plenty of Jewish Americans volunteer to go fight with the Israeli army anyway. Let those who want to go fight alongside Israelis do so. And by the same token, let those who want to go fight alongside the Palestinians do so as well, but without being ultimately branded as terrorists. I guarantee you the number of recruits for Palestine vs. Israel will be greater than 10:1.

I have always been supremely annoyed by Jewish-American draft dodgers always so quick to send American military in harm's way, to further their own political and economic and cultural proclivities and goals.
Also, I would recommend to the individual in the White House to send an investigative commission to look into this air assault by Israel against the recent flotilla inbound to Gaza.
The commission should be made up of Robert Rubin, Alan Greenspan, Arthur Levitt, Phil Gramm, Ben Bernanke, Diane Farrell, Larry Summers, Gary Gensler, Mary Schapiro and Timothy Geithner.
Then, once they are in Israel, he should nullify their American citizenship and leave their sorry and pathetic butts over there for good.
If ever sedition charges were warranted, it's against every last traitorous senator or congressman that expressed their fealty to Israel.

I bring nothing less than a warning to humanity. Pride in the heritage of your culture and race is excellent in that it can provide a sense of group belonging and personal pride of being part of something bigger than yourself. Be as ethnic as you want to be, hang CD's and your ancestors flag from the rear view mirror if that is your thing.
However, if a group believes and promotes its superiority to other groups, the membership are supremacists and this crosses the line. The last 100 years has seen hundreds of millions of people killed in religious and ethnic cleansing. Sometimes we become the very thing we hate when consumed by hate in the cycle of violence. Consider a "Good Citizen Scale". It rates all people in a nation on a scorecard from 1 to 100 based on how well they further the general welfare of the place. Rachel Corrie was a seriously disturbed individual who adopted a toxic political philosophical position. Her unfortunate death was a result of her being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Many people just hate the fact that the Jews have real presence in the Holy Land at this time in human history. It is hard for people to understand that others do not even recognize your right to even exist. In a well known photo taken a week before her death in March 2003, she is seen burning a mock USA flag in a satanic cult-like pose in Gaza. Many people have great trouble with the idea of sovereignty. The world is awash with violation of boundaries. The concept of a healthy border to some people is a foreign land. I asked them that if they went home tonight to their communal house in the inner city, (BTW, paid for by federal government assistance/taxpayers as a result of a safety net brought in by people with a respect for the Judeo-Christian foundation of Western Civilization. I didn't push this point as it would have been like throwing petrol on a fire) and they discovered fifty strangers had taken over their nice little bedroom, would they have been happy to share the space after battling away tirelessly against the ills of the world with their joints and coffee shop activist friends ? (Excuse this extremely long sentence. Again I left the medicinal substances part out of the question.)

Because of the concept of Zionism, defined as the establishment of a Jewish homeland, Israel garners principal loyalty to its government from many Jews in other countries. Zionism defines Israel as more than a nation of Israelis, but as the homeland of all Jews, regardless of the country where they are now citizens.
Chaim Weizmann, by far the most dominate force in persuading Britain at the 1919 Paris Peace Conference to declare a Jewish homeland in Palestine, severely criticized Jews in Europe for wasting their work and loyalty as citizens of other countries. At the Paris discussions, French scholar Sylvain Levy, speaking against the homeland proposal on behalf of the French delegation, said he felt the “exceptional privileges” Jews would receive by gaining another “homeland” in addition to the country where they resided would be “shocking.”
Said Levy, as reported by Margaret MacMillan’s in her bestseller, Paris 1919: “It would be dangerous to create a precedent whereby certain people who already possessed the rights of citizenship in one country would be called on to govern and to exercise other rights of citizenship in a new country.”

British Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour and Prime Minister David Lloyd George were able to push through the measure for Weizmann, in spite of French opposition, because Britain had military control of Palestine at the time. And Palestine was also part of the Sykes-Picot wartime agreement promising Arab land to the French.
When the Arabs objected strenuously to the Balfour Declaration, the British accused them of ingratitude. On March 16th, an Israeli soldier driving a bulldozer two-stories high crushed to death 23-year-old Rachel Corrie, an American nonviolent human rights protestor. According to numerous witnesses and photographic documentation, she was killed intentionally.
Rachel and a handful of others practicing Gandhian nonviolence in the Gaza Strip had been pleading with Israeli soldiers for two hours not to destroy a Palestinian family home. Suddenly, the Israeli bulldozer operator began driving his giant bulldozer toward the home, Rachel sitting in the bulldozer’s path. Witnesses report that she then stood up on the mound of debris and dirt pushed by the bulldozer blade and looked straight at the operator through the window. He continued, and she was pulled underneath the tractor, its blade crushing her. He then backed up, running over her again, burying her deeper into the dirt.
Three friends ran to Rachel and dug her out. According to an eyewitness report by Joe Carr of Kansas City: “Her body was in a mangled condition, she said ‘my back is broken!’ but nothing else. Her eyes were open and she was clearly in a great deal of pain.” A Palestinian ambulance made it through Israeli forces, and took her to the hospital, where she died. Reports are unclear whether it was her fractured skull or the suffocation caused by crushed lungs and being buried in the dirt that caused her death.
George Bush has yet to condemn this atrocity by an “ally” who receives more US funding than any other nation on earth, $7-$10 million per day. Congress has yet to pass a resolution condemning this use of American tax money to kill an American citizen. The U.S. State Department has yet to impose any diplomatic sanctions whatsoever against a government whose “apology” for one of its soldiers crushing a young, peaceful American student has consisted of calling it “regrettable,” and blaming Rachel for the Israeli soldier’s decision to kill her. …

Attacks on International Peace Workers: The Death of Tom Hurndall (1981-2004) | January 2004It is with great sadness that If Americans Knew shares with you the news of the passing away of Tom Hurndall.
Tom, 22, died Tuesday night in a London hospital due to complications with pneumonia. He had spent the past nine months in a vegetative state after being shot in the head by an Israeli sniper on April 11, 2003, while trying to escort children to safety in Rafah, Gaza Strip, Occupied Palestine.
Tom was a member of the International Solidarity Movement, a Palestinian-led effort to bring internationals to the Occupied Palestinian Territories to aid the civilian population in non-violent resistance to the occupation.
At a hearing on Monday, a soldier arrested last week in connection with the shooting of Tom Hurndall, has finally been indicted on six charges : Aggravated Assault; two counts of Obstruction of Justice; Incitement to False Testimony; False Testimony; and Improper Conduct. A second soldier has been detained and is expected to be indicted on charges of Obstructing Justice and False Testimony.
As we grieve the death of Tom, let us not forget the ongoing catastrophic situation in Palestine that he was working to end. In fact, since he was shot (April 11, 2003 to January 2004), 407 Palestinians have been murdered and 1,990 have been injured. As Tom’s mother, Jocelyn, wrote recently in the UK Guardian, “It seems that life is cheap in the occupied territories. Different value attached to life depends on whether the victim happens to be Israeli, international or Palestinian.” …

It's interesting to me that Iran is the only country in the Middle East that guarantees its Jews representation in Parliament, reserving a seat under the Constitution since 1906. The current member of parliament is Maurice Motamed.
I don't believe that Iran is anti-Jew, although it is anti-Israel like most other countries in the region. And it is certainly anti-occupation and anti-blockade, but those are legitimate and understandable policies.
If Iran weren't sitting on huge oil reserves smack between the US-occupied nations of Iraq and Afghanistan, we wouldn't be seeing all the propaganda about the Iranian "threat" to Israel.

The news about Iran may be true, but the video clip at the end which is released by Israeli Defence Forces seems fake.
There are people speaking Russian, then English with Russian accent. There is only one response in English from flotilla which is a woman but she is not the captain of flotilla which supposed to be a Turkish man who must be able to speak basic English and he never speaks.
Very weird, why Russian ? any idea ? i was expecting someone may also speak Turkish but nobody speaks Turkish either, its seems to me that this is a fake video, an Israeli propaganda.
Speaking Russian is very common in Israel since the majority of Ashkenazi Jews who moved to Israel in the last 25 years came from Russia or ex Soviet States. Why it was used here is something only the Israelis can answer.

Dozens of people gathered at Victoria International Airport last night to give a hero's welcome to Victoria activist Kevin Neish.
Neish was among the 680 activists taken into custody after an Israeli helicopter commando raid Monday on six aid-laden ships bound for Gaza.
Nine people were shot and killed on one of the aid vessels, which had sailed from Turkey days earlier. Israel says its soldiers were defending themselves.
Neish had tears in his eyes as he hugged supporters and shook hands before giving a brief statement.
"It's good [to be home] but ... people died."
He said Turkish authorities have investigated and they suspect those killed were executed. He said he saw two people with two gunshots in the side of the head.
He characterized what he experienced as "three days of brutish bloody assaults on all of us."
He said other countries are thinking of sending more aid ships and he was asked to go back, which he said he would, in time.
His supporters, holding signs and a Palestinian flag, sang "we shall not be moved" and called him a hero as he walked into the arrival gates.
His return follows rallies in Centennial Square and across the country protesting Israel's blockade of Gaza. Rallies were also held in Toronto and Montreal, and in Europe.
The Victoria rally was followed by a march down Douglas and Government streets.
Zoe Blunt, a friend of Neish's, said Neish played an important role by being there when Israeli commandos landed on board the vessel and started shooting people, so the facts about the raid can't be covered up.
"If people from the outside were not there to witness it, were not there to smuggle the videos and the photographs out, it would have been just another day of Israel slaughtering nine people, calling them terrorists and no one could contradict them," said Blunt.
"What happened on the ship was very simple: The Israeli commandos fired on civilians who were un-armed," she said. "It was a one-sided fight. There was no way that these people could even hope to stand up against the commandos."
Although the Israelis seized Neish's camera, she said, he managed to hide the computer chip containing images, which was handed to Turkish officials.
At the airport, Neish said he captured "some pretty graphic stuff" on his camera, which he says Turkish authorities will hand over to UN officials.
Randy Caravaggio told the crowd it's time to start pressuring the Canadian government to take a strong stand and denounce Israel's actions in Gaza.
"Canada and the U.S. have been saying, in unison, that they are looking into the matter," said Caravaggio. "What the heck are they looking into?"
The Canadian government has not condemned Israel for its raids, but has said it supports a prompt, impartial inquiry into the deadly events on Monday.
Local artist Anne Hansen, who attended the rally, said the raid has meant Israel no longer gets a "free pass." "You don't go around murdering people on ships in international waters."
The Israeli blockade has been in effect for four years, ostensibly to stop the Hamas rulers of the Gaza Strip from bolstering their arsenal to fight the Jewish state.

I bring nothing less than a warning to humanity. Pride in the heritage of your culture and race is excellent in that it can provide a sense of group belonging and personal pride of being part of something bigger than yourself. Be as ethnic as you want to be, hang CD's and your ancestors flag from the rear view mirror if that is your thing.
However, if a group believes and promotes its superiority to other groups, the membership are supremacists and this crosses the line. The last 100 years has seen hundreds of millions of people killed in religious and ethnic cleansing. It always starts the same way with a group believing it is superior and blaming another group for all the evils in society. Many groups believe they have a direct line to good/God while anybody that opposes them must be of satan/evil. Invariably, this outside group is marginalized and dehumanized so that the outsiders aren't even considered human (uncivilized / savages). This unfortunately happened to the Jewish people by the Nazis as they showed movies that compared good Jewish people with street rats - dehumanizing human beings.
Sometimes we become the very thing we hate when consumed by hate in the cycle of violence. Studies show that normal people when put into the role of a guard over other normal people that are chosen as "inmates" tend to start acting out with their new found power and turn into Barney Fifes lording it over the group chosen as the inmates (like guantanamo). We must look inside ourselves and be gracious in positions of power for the sake of humanity. The Talmud, The Jesuit Extreme Oath of Induction, and the Koran all have inspirational quotes in addition to quotes that do not appear to promote peace. If God is Love, then the opposite is hate. Love spelled backwards is Evol (sound it out). Either all religions are false (although well meaning), or one religion is true (based on logic). The answer to that question is not going to be answered in a logical fashion as a test of exterminating other beliefs. If any group is under threat of extermination they have every right to defend themselves and the right to Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.
Beware unchecked power, as you will have no power under that system. The Law gives you human rights due only to your property rights, so defend the law and your individual property rights from the collective (which is just the powerful and their cronies). Without our collective will enforcing these God given rights, groups like Goldman Sachs could break into your house and steal your milk money. My biggest fear is Presidential signing statements and treaties subverting country sovereignty to some unaccountable political/corporate machine half way around the world with no accountability and representation.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all mankind are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. Let's promote this around the world and be that shining city on a hill.

There seems to be quite a lot of prejudice on this board either against Muslims or Jews, racism against any people is stupid, period. At the end of the day the actions of both sides are rational given their situations and only facts on the ground will change those situations. Arguing about the past is also a futile exercise, Israel exists it’s not about to vanish and the Palestinians are not going to give up their struggle until a comprehensive peace agreement is reached, not everyone is going to like that peace agreement, if it ever happens, but like Northern Ireland at some point they will have to accept it. The US administration can get their act together and push Israel for a comprehensive peace or they can allow the lukids to march forward with their non-plan which will keep the current situation in place with the occasional flare up. The problem with the current situation is that soon Iran will gain the bomb and the dynamics of the region will change, Israel could find itself eventually with a nuclear device in the hands of Hamas or Hizbollah, such a scenario will cause massive loss of life on all sides. To prevent such a scenario either the US commits to a war against Iran that includes regime change or Israel achieves a comprehensive peace with all its neighbours and reduces the chance of a nuclear showdown scenario. What Israel and the US seem to believe is that there is no limit on their ability to project power and no real hard consequences on that power projection, that will probably lead us to war, a war we cannot afford and I am not sure we can win, but perhaps we can win it and the non-plan can continue for another few decades.
