Irate Germany Summons Iranian Ambassador After Angela Merkel Plane Denied Access Over Iran Airspace For Two Hours

Tyler Durden's picture

It appears that even a Stuxnet-crippled Iran can strike back. As the WSJ reports, "Germany summoned the Iranian ambassador in Berlin Tuesday after Iran temporarily blocked a plane carrying German Chancellor Angela Merkel from entering its airspace" in what has the making of a major diplomatic scandal. Merkel, along with a large German delegation was en route to India for an official visit, and had expected to get an uncontested green light to fly in Tehran-controlled skies, when the permission was granted... for over two hours. NDTV has more: "In an incident that could have serious diplomatic consequences, Iran temporarily refused to allow German Chancellor Angela Merkel's plane to enter its airspace on Tuesday. The plane reportedly had to circle over Turkey for two hours before being given permission to enter. The government aircraft was denied overflight rights in the early hours of Tuesday. The exact reason for the denial of overflight rights is unclear. But before the plane left Berlin on Monday evening, it was reportedly given permission by Iranian authorities. Germany along with the US and its other allies in NATO has long been at loggerheads with Iran essentially over its nuclear arms policy and alleged support to terror." Who could have possibly conceived that a country ostracized by the global community can possibly strike back. All we can say is that Air Force One better fly the friendly skies when it travels over the Middle East going forward or else it may be forced to discover just how efficient its flare and chaff Electronic Counter Measures truly are...

Haha! She was in India today, meeting the Prime Minister.

All very shady stuff folks. When world leaders start flying around to meet each other a lot, something is coming up. Usually a phone call between secreteries suffices.

Secrets, secrets, so many secrets. Slush this and hush that.

i-rate, i-hate i-raq, i-ran, i-pad, i-pod, i-done...

YEs exactly what Ive been thinking...never seen so many damn world leader whirlwind trips to meet and greet each other. Reminds me of the WW2 war movies I was watching yesterday.

harper of the 51st state was in greece to show how to impose draconian taxes on a supposedly intelligent citizenry without encouraging revolt.

i'm sure someone in the greek revenue ministry will be smart enough to consider that canada revolts only when the local hockey team loses.

This, or Merkel is trying to push Eurofighter Typhoon in the deal of the century ( If I'm right, Sarkozy might be next to be banned from entering into Iran airspace en-route to India in the push to sell Rafale.

If one doesn't enter the purple passage on time it closes and maybe this is the problem; if so Angela should thank the Iranian Foreign Ministry for sorting everything out in just two hours as I think that normally the plane would have to land and the pilot fill in fresh paperwork, leaving Angela to drink tea with law-abiding people.

I presume it was a right proper pain for the Turks and maybe Iranians as they would need to close some airspace around the plane to comply with the protocol, so it really isn't clear to me who should be complaining and, of course, I am not holding my breath waiting for the mainstream press to fill me in on the facts.

The Germans pulled the International Law card because Iran witheld approvals. This was meant to send notice of the geographical importance of Iran, in addition to underscore that the world can not pick and choose which international laws need to be respected.

Let WW3 commence...people think of the advantages!

Love will feel real, we will be in touch with our most primal insticts, the strong shall no longer have the burden of the week on their backs, intellegence will be a virtue, music and poetry will stir passion... the only thing is, to pick a winning side. Personally, I'm going to head up onto my roof and painting it into a chinese flag, also tatoos of chinese, pakistani, and russian symbols might prove a life saver.

Hmmm....well I wouldn’t wanna hug and kiss Angela Merkel either. But it’s not the same as hugging a mamba. And neither is permitting a prearranged crossing of Iranian airspace on the way to an official visit to India. If you’re looking to obstruct Merkel and German bankers and businessmen, you could do worse than criticize the policy of pushing German exports vs domestic demand, particularly within the debt ridden nations of the Eurozone.

I like snakes. I have met some of the most poisonous in the world. I find that if you leave them alone, they leave you alone.

i think germany has a much better relationship with iran than the u.s.

its just that germany must follow all EU decisions and so they cant make a lot of business with Iran. without all those sanctions germany would have great business there

Germany has important business going on with Russia too.

For some reasons nobody in Washington or Paris complains about that.

But as soon as us Italians tried to do business with Gaddafi they all started dropping bombs.

Well Angie sent a few Dolphin-class submarines to Israel and Germany had given them a few previously as well.

These are real beauties, as Agence France-Press noted 18 months ago:

According to Jane's Defence Weekly, the U212s are designed for a crew of 35, have a range of 4,500 kilometres (2,810 miles) and can launch cruise missiles carrying nuclear warheads.

Israeli media have written that the Dolphin submarine could be key in any attack on arch-foe Iran's controversial nuclear sites.

An Israeli submarine recently used the Suez Canal for the first time in June, escorted by Egyptian navy vessels, in what Israeli media said was intended as a message to Iran.

“What would serve the Jew-hating world better as repayment for thousands of years of massacres but a nuclear winter? Or invite all those tut-tutting European statesmen and peace activists to join us in the ovens? For the first time in history a people facing extermination while the world either cackles or looks away have the power to destroy the world. The ultimate justice?”
–Professor David Perlmutter, writing in the Los Angeles Times, April 7, 2002

“We possess several hundred atomic warheads and rockets and can launch them at targets in all directions, perhaps even at Rome. Most European capitals are targets for our air force…We have the capability to take the world down with us, and I can assure you that that will happen before Israel goes under.”
–Martin Van Creveld, Israeli Historian

Beautiful. All the world to fly in and Iran is the wall of worry.

All they had to do was detour into Afghanistan and land to refuel/Feast on the Brat and beer for a while and go on.
