In the first quarter, the US economy grew by 3.7%, revised up from an originally reported 2.7% increase. But growth estimates all the way back to the start of 2007 were revised lower. Moreover, the level of real GDP in Q1 was revised down by $100 billion. Does this mean the secular bull market in bonds will continue? And are Treasuries the "last diversifier left"?

The Japanese economy operates on the assumption, soon to be proved false, that the government will always be able to borrow at low interest rates. As internal demand evaporates, the government will have to start hawking its debt outside Japan — in a more realistic world, where interest rates are a lot higher.

Irene Aldridge Gets Death Threats Over Her Views On HFT, Pitches Book Again

Tyler Durden's picture

Don't forget, Irene is merely the messenger... for very conflicted market participants who want nothing more than to perpetuate the current system. Yet her book is, presumably, her own product, in which, if one were to actually read it, one would likely find some discussion of Flash. Keep in mind this particular messenger was never heard or seen before Flash became the hot topic de jour. One wonders why this specialist on fair "computerized daytrading" never pointed out her misgivings about Flash before her suddenly numerous TV appearances. Do remember: keep your messengers closer.

Death threats?  Yeah, right.  "I wanna **** you to death."  This is a distraction, albeit a beautiful one.  SLP is where the crime is, whether it's GS, Timmaaay, or Saint Bernard.

I can't listen or watch her for two reason

a) her accent is like the one usually found in a Moldavian potato farmer asking you direction on how to get to Italy via Bosnia while trying to pitch you a Bible so he could pay the first installment to his trafficker

b) there is something about here that makes a man want to unleash his pack of rottweilers when she is anywhere around him

and on a side note; her book probably consists of wikipedia articles and theoretical knowledge on the matter, and the ethical view that all the people are fair and won't exploit the situation even if they have any means necessary to do so.

P.S. She probably has at least 20 restraining orders with here name on them; all granted to her former boyfriends ( she looks like a psycho to me; but than again i can be wrong on all of the above and thus make the case in favor of HTF and Irene'; and i do not wish to do so; so if you have any facts that are in support of this post, please post them here, and if you have any facts that oppose this view, please keep them to yourself; if this is an illusion; please don't spoil it  )

Thanks Hrundi; i have already sent her an e-mail a month or so ago, when she appeared on CNBC ( ? =), filled with my own thoughts about her; her " book ", " opinion " and " spin ". Some of the words in that e-mail were; " bitch "; " are you THAT retarded "; " how much do they pay you; i hope more than Spitzers whore " etc. I mean, you're a smart guy; ou get my point; and I ended my e-mail with the eternal words of the great Jeff Macke " I'm gonna talk to you like a child; if you understand me; just say yeah " and i added; but its better you say nothing at all; and i included the song with the same title in the signature. Also, i felt a bit of a remorse afterwards; so i mailed her a YouTube link for the song; never call you bitch again.

She never responded.

I say lets go back to the day's when 200 people working for 6 firms on the floor of the NYSE had every single order, every bit of insider information and could correlation front run (huge order to sell Mobil comes to you and your firm sells Exxon before you let it fill) with no interference. Better yet lets make it so people can only invest in t-bills, cause those markets aren't pushed around.

I'm pretty sure I can remember times when I had orders underneath the market where a print went off with the specialists and you would participate...was the system perfect...no.... but you could get a feel for the flows and gauge the market. MS , Financial Engineering , 1998 — 1999

death threat ???? bitch; the only death threat you have ever seen was in a movie; apart from that maybe in your little imaginary world in which you're the CEO of GS. Death threat ? You don't know what death threat is; and no; no one will read buy, DL or pirate you're pathetic little book; i bet it will be another fine example of American education system i.e a snobbish, patronizing; verbally masqueraded pile of utter and worthless garbage.

Sure Verbal. I'm not giving her one red cent. I've seen her enough to understand the message of the book and have much better reading to attend to.

Before my current real estate career, I was an application programmer. Object oriented scripting that I did would not be fast enough for HFT execution. The programs would need to be writen in assembler (best), or c and c++. The other problem that is a sham is that GS et al, have the holy grail - access to the servers that these scripts can run on. You get me that server access and me and my boy will code an HFT program good enough for a few mil a day. Oh, not kidding.

No one has code that runs on the exchange matching engines. Not GS, not GETCO. No one.

You can get a server plugged into a switch to which the matching engine is connected, so that you are only a few micro-seconds away... and if you think you can easily turn that kind of access into a few $M / day, I suggest you call up any of the exchanges and speak with their sales departments, as they will happily rent you such rack space for what you would surely view as a nominal fee... (you would also need to work out a sponsored access relationship with a broker dealer - might want to give Penson a call).

You are correct that OO scripting would not cut it... but even if you were writing excellent assembly code on a fast machine co-located with the exchanges and using a broker-dealer for sponsored access (i.e., you were setup to trade as quickly as literally possible for anyone, including GS), you still need a trading strategy.

I can go buy the best canvas and paints in the world, but I'm still not going to make art...

by Anonymous

#74117

Bullshit.

You could get sponsored access and a co-located server for what would be a small cost on a few mil / day... but you don't have a trading strategy.

Good canvas and paint doesn't make an artist.

These algos are not that complex, you could do very well with simple tick events. The edge for these algos is speed, adding complexity (more event processing) kills your time.

It's just a mo-mo thing, automated collusion.

You can get some out of the box stuff for 150kish or roll your own with open source.

Be nice...this is BNN in Toronto. They actually have old fashioned reporters without facelifts, titjobs, cleavage, etc, like all the media up here. Some of the anchors at CTV and BNN actually look like they are relics from an entirely different era. Now maybe they aren't the most brilliant minds but they kind of remind me of FNN before NBC in the late 80's --they spend a great deal of time with guests (Irene is a Quebecqua and they didn't give her that much time in Canadian minutes to pump up her pre-orders at AMZN). BNN is free of all the shit of CNBS--Caruso Cabrera, Kudlow, Cramer, and Kneale free. When I am here in CA (which is 1/2 the time) I like to have it on in the background.

Looks like something is UUP. Thanks for pointing it out. No news I have heard of for the ramp but it would be good for a pullback in stocks Monday if it holds. The only thing out there of note was not much in the way of bank failures and the IMF selling gold. But with the onslaught of next week's auctions, it may just be a Friday night anomoly. BTW, lots of options activity in OCT over the last week on the UUP in call buying. Today, the P/C ratio 1 to 5 on $23 strike, $24 strike is quite interesting: open interest in puts is a whopping 2, call open interest is 19563.

Obama man planted into Fed. He came out with the pay cap reform project to be controlled by Fed:

The Obama administration wants the Federal Reserve to be the maximum regulator of the American financial system. As Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner told the Senate Banking Committee, “The Federal Reserve is best positioned to play that role. It already supervises and regulates bank holding companies, including all major U.S. commercial and investment banks.”

The problem, of course, is that most informed observers have concluded that the Fed failed to adequately supervise and regulate banks during the lead-up to the financial crisis. Count Senator Chris Dodd, chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, in that camp. “There’s not a lot of confidence in the Fed at this point,” Dodd said right after the White House released its financial reform proposal.

This is where Daniel Tarullo makes his appearance. The newest member of the Federal Reserve has apparently authored a plan to have the central bank approve compensation policies potentially But previous to joining the Fed, Tarullo was an influential economic adviser in the Obama presidential campaign.

So now what we have, I think, is Obama’s man at the Fed pushing a politically savvy plan that could bolster the Fed’s standing as a tough regulator in the eyes of Congress and deflect some of the criticism of the central banks past failings. Score one for the White House in its push to make the Fed super-regulator.
