It Begins: France Commences Military Action Over Libya
It has begun - From the AP: "Top officials from the United States, Europe and the Arab world have announced immediate military action to protect civilians amid combat between Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi's forces and rebel fighters. French President Nicolas Sarkozy said after an emergency summit in Paris on Saturday that France has already taken military action against Libya. Sarkozy said "our determination is total." Earlier Saturday, Libyan government troops forces stormed into the rebel capital of Benghazi, apparently ignoring a proclaimed cease-fire and potentially complicating any allied military action."
The photo below shows what happens when a Libyan jet takes on a French fighter jet:
More from Al Arabiya:
Several French Rafale fighter jets on Saturday overflew "all Libyan territory" on reconnaissance mission, ready to enforce an air-exclusion zone to halt Muammar Qaddafi’s attacks on opposition, a French military source said, as Western leaders met in Paris to consider their next steps.
The planes were in the air not far from Libya this afternoon and were ready to carry out air strikes if there are orders from President Nicolas Sarkozy, a military official with knowledge of the preparations said on condition of anonymity.
World leaders gathered in Paris on Saturday to discuss a coordinated military intervention in Libya, where Muammar Gaddafi defied the West with an advance into the rebel stronghold of Benghazi.
A witness from the western town of Zintin has told Al Arabiya that Gaddafi forces were pounding the town with artillery and residents, including women and children, were taking refuge hideouts in the city.
The witness added that Gaddafi forces were attempting to subdue the opposition-held town because of its strategic location west of the capital Tripoli.
An unnamed U.S. official has said the ongoing violence against Libyan civilians "obviously has an impact" on the international community's next steps
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, British Prime Minister David Cameron and French President Sarkozy met privately and then sat down with Arab leaders, an African Union representative, European Union representatives and European heads of state to prepare rapid U.N.-mandated action.
After Gaddafi broke his pledge of a ceasefire overnight, sources close to the Paris talks said military strikes could start as soon as the meeting ends on Saturday afternoon, with France, Britain and Canada in an initial operation and any participation by the United States or Arab nations coming later.
"The strikes could start around 3 or 4 o'clock (1400-1500 GMT)," one source said, adding that Gaddafi's advance into the eastern city of Benghazi had increased pressure to act fast.
A second source said it was "certainly possible" that strikes would start straight after the meeting.
Sarkozy will address the media after the meeting wraps up at around 3:30 p.m. (1430 GMT) and Clinton, Cameron and Merkel are also expected to make statements.
Iraq's foreign minister was at the talks, as was the Qatari prime minister and United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, even though Germany is not expected to participate in any action for now.
Determined to prove its diplomatic clout after its clumsy handling of the revolt in Tunisia, Paris has been at the forefront of coordinating a world response to the crisis in Libya, where Gaddafi's troops outgun rag-tag and poorly armed rebel forces. Sarkozy was the first foreign leader to recognize the opposition and drop support for Gaddafi.
Backed by Cameron, Sarkozy convened Saturday's talks in a matter of hours after pushing France's U.N. Security Council partners hard this week to back a resolution allowing possible military action and a no-fly zone over Libya.
NATO ambassadors met in Brussels earlier on Saturday to discuss involvement by the 28-member military alliance in enforcing a no-fly zone, but no decision was taken.
A NATO diplomat said Britain, the United States and Canada were in favour of NATO taking a lead in any operation but said Paris was lukewarm on the idea.
"There could be a decision tomorrow saying that NATO will engage in a no-fly zone, but it's still not clear whether it will be a coalition of the willing, or a NATO operation," the diplomat said.
"France seems to have some problem with it being a NATO operation, given NATO's reputation in the Arab world as a result of Afghanistan and given that NATO is seen as an alliance dominated by the United States."
He added: "What is certain is that time is pressing. A delay of 12 hours of so could be very harmful."
Gaddafi's push into Libya's second city of 670,000 people, in spite of the ceasefire pledged on Friday, appeared to be an attempt to pre-empt Western military action.
France and Britain declined to react to the latest attacks ahead of the Paris talks, but a French government source said the international community must act fast.
"Everything is ready (to act) but the decision is now a political one. It's clear we have to move quickly," he said.
French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe met EU Foreign Minister Catherine Ashton earlier on Saturday to discuss the EU's role.
In the meantime pro Gaddafi forces in Tripoli threaten all out civil war, as per Al Jazeera (watch live coverage after the jump).

You are good example of people's reaction.
The French always fall for this, they are not as smart when it comes to military/political strategy, they have always played it wrong, you go back in history to see how the English have played them so well. Its again the case here. Its the English that have played their hand well, again.
I'm neither English or French, just an innocent bystander - Good luck !
WTF are you taking ? The French won 80% of their wars. The US lost most of them or used others armies to do the job like the Russians, the English or the French like in WWII to win. Get some education, guys.
Yeah, so I guess the Frecnh won in Vietnam, and WW2 then as well. What about Algeria?

its a shame it took so long. to sit by and do nothing in the face of evil is like participating.
I heard Khadaffi financed the campaign of Sarkozy. Maybe it was a lone and he can't pay it back. He will make that problem disappear.
French dropping baguettes and attitude.
QuadDaffy returns fire with rock.
French instantly surrender and offer daughter for a pastry and glass of vino.
Watching Gadaffi on videos and he looks stoned all the time. The way he moves, the apparent delay in his reaction time, the way he talks. The guy is ripped to the tits.
One frog airman captured, France surrenders.
<next headline>
That flaming plane has not been identified as rebel or Libyan, much less that a frog shot it. The Rafale has a waterproof cockpit so there is no malfunction when the pilot pisses all over himself and the cockpit.
Looks like a shitty Photoshop job to me.
Agreed
Same thoughts. Looks like those planes have structural integrity and significant flames from the area behind the cockpit. No smoke, no damage. Only smoke and mirrors...
Everyone is an expert in military fields. They doctored the video too...
Nope, but taking a still photo of jet's plummeting to the grounds while flaming without blur is pretty amazing though.
Lol. Yeah, were they flying right next to eachother AND shot down at the same exact time? Pretty crazy to get two fighter jets in one frame like that. EDIT: Oh, it's three frames of the same jet going down, my bad.
Looks like the pilot may have been a little late in pulling the handles. Being that the seat actually worked makes one wonder if it was Libyan

Look a little harder and you will see it's not one photo, but 3 separate photo's, one fraction of a second after another.
It won't even be a contest....
Daffy's a coward through and through if he doesn't surrender soon, either he or his spawn will be killed or they will find this sick bastard curled up in the fetal position with soiled pants begging for mercy if indeed he is found alive.
You should be called C-U-N-T. Do you have any family in the armed forces? I suppose you do because that's the only place for scum like you. I ask because it will be amusing when those meat head fucks have to fight an army not composed of blind farmers and get sent home in body bags. Thanks!
Nice to hear from a friend of
Moammar Gadhafi...again. YOU ARE A PLANT.
You are now exposed, go back to Libya, your leader need you there.
Obama's rim needs cleaning, chop chop!

Can it really be that there are still moral people left within the Goebbelian Matrix?
Take hope, this is just a sideshow. This is the main event:
• In October “The Independent” reported that China, Russia, Brazil, Japan, and a number of Gulf States were planning to stop settling oil transactions in US dollar by 2018. The dollar should be replaced by a basket of currencies including the Chinese yuan, the Japanese yen, the Russian rouble, the euro, gold, and other commodities. The political implications of such a decision would be enormous.
• The Iranian oil exchange accepts settlement in many currencies except US dollar.
• Nine countries in Central and South America and the Caribbean have recently agreed on setting up a monetary union.
• Turkey wants to invoice international transactions with Russia, Iran, and China in local currency. On top of that, Russia will allow the settlement of transactions with China in yuan and rouble.
• Four Gulf nations (Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar) have agreed to establish a monetary union. In the long term plans are to introduce a physical currency, the “gulfo”, and an own central bank is supposed to be set up. Within the region, oil contracts are not settled in dollar anymore. The GDP of the area amounts to USD 1.2 trillion, and it holds 40% of global oil reserves.
By. Ronald Stoeferle of Erste Group
Erste Group is the leading financial provider in the Eastern EU. More than 50,000 employees serve 17.4 million clients in 3,200 branches in 8 countries (Austria, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Ukraine). As of 31 December 2010 Erste Group has reached EUR 205.9 billion in total assets, a net profit of EUR 1,015.4 million.
Why don't they settle the oil transaction in their native currencies and have their central banks sterilize the transaction on the world market?
Better yet, why don't these parties decree that all mortgages be denominated in native currencies?
"Nobility" has strange bedfellows...
Until it doesn't. All the elites can offer their lackeys is chaos so they can rape and plunder at will. That is not the best bribe in the world.
+1
I first read about this when the US was constantly sabre rattling against Iran for no obvious (at least to me) reason. So I sought more information. Every time the Iranian Oil Bourse was mentioned, GWB would threaten Iran. IIRC, Saddam was also talking about dumping the USD and trading oil in euros just before he met his demise.
Are the french now listening to goldman too.
Announcement after opex friday. GS probably called the cease fire to max their positions. Gadaffy did not say a word, unless goldfuck controls his wealth too.
"at goldfart, even our best manipuklation can't override geo political events. But we do have a lot of control over the press. Shit, doing god's work? We are god!"
The French? What they going to do? Are they going to drop insults from the fighter followed up by acting pompos & making snide remarks until they surrender?
Apparently that's all it takes to knock Libyan fighters out of the air.
lol
I wouldn't trust those cheese-eating-surrender-monkey-pussies with a wooden pistol! Yet alone with actual military warfare.
The same people that line the Champ-Elysees with trees...so the Germans can march comfortably in the shade!
While a bit extreme, your hyperbole is quite funny good sir.
Boilemaker...
For your good information, the trees were planted by Napoleon....not the current one, for this one is not a president in our eyes, but the real one !!! Keep boiling water or read again your French history.....while you still can.
this is all very easy to say from the comfort of your obesity armchairs, i guarantee that none of you cretins would want to be in a Libyan tank or jet with French fighters bearing down on you.
armchair heros make me puke. stop typing and get back to your nachos.
I know, it's pretty disgusting really. These people seem to make up the majority or ZH these days, they hate the government but love the military. They're like those huge tubs of lard at the Tea Party rallies spread over wheelchairs paid for by the same government they want to "starve".
OK, well....well...wait, what the fuck are you even talking about?
On this point, they feel in their primitive way, the source of the US prosperity.
In the US, the private sector lives off the public sector, that is the military.
I assure you that our armchairs are NOT obese! Chubby or even 'husky' but certainly not morbidly obese. That's an outright lie and unfair to armchairs across America.
(I'll bet you thought I was going to point out how fucking stupid your sterotypical view of 330,000,000 Americans was...)
No way I love you. My heart is with Dick Cheney, my dick with Hillary Clinton.

A picture of an unidentified plane crashing and all the dummies assume it was the French who shot down a Libyan plane.
What? Who the fuck said that?
Believe me, I didn't assume it was shot down by the French. It's hard to shoot down other planes when you are fleeing away from the engagement.
Your hyperbole is amusing but let's not forget we won our independence with French made arms and uniforms.
That explains all the hand-to-hand combat.
Precisely Poopra. Not with French "men" inside them or handling them, see?
Big difference.
ORI
75% of fighters at Yorktown were French, but let your ignorance run free.
Holy shit...you must be really old. It must that fish oil I've been reading about.
That old canard is hugely ignorant. The French have quite a bit more experience with the costs of war than we Americans blessed by geography and the absence of near-by enemies. Still, they came to our aid at a time when most historical accounts claim we were on the ropes against a vastly better-equipped British military.
I think the 60,000+ dead G.I.'s still rotting in French soil pretty much evens it up.
65,000 dead GI's, is that all ?
Millions of French soldiers died while fighting during France's 1500 years existence - some even died during the American War of Indenpendence - and they never dropped atomic bombs or spread Agent Orange on women and children to win a war.
Please, read some historic books before making ignorant comments like these.
Let me see if I can clarify this for you. 60,000+ dead G.I. fighting to liberate a people not their own and a country that wasn't their home. That's NOT including the additional 60,000+ that never returned from Vietnam, which was another clusterfuck the French left for the US to 'mop up'. That's also excluding World War
The French have an enormous open tab with the Americans.
The French treat the Americans like Dentists and Cops. They hate us until they need us. Then, we are sorely needed and appreciated. Then, of course, hated again.
So what ? French soldiers fight to give independency to a people not their own and a country that wasn't their home... against the English who are also great fighters.
The French don't hate the American people. It's the American oligarchy who hates France and Europe or maybe should I say is afraid of Europeans in general.
There's no reason to be afraid of Europeans unless you count their over use of cologne, fanny bags, and use of coinage as currency.
I certainly don't 'hate' Euros (I am married to one and have many friend in Sweden and Germany). But, I'll tell you that I'm seriously sick and fucking tired on hearing their morality sermons.
Yes, you are definitely sick. But dont worry, europhobia is treatable.
I think you mean to write euronausea.
Guess what...we are sick of American arrogance and hipocrisy...you F:it with your banks and now you are in the mercy of creditors...
You are aware that Europe is in even deeper financial shit...right?
That dentist/cop analogy was capital! And let's not forget that the French, who are so mangniminous (they surely arent doing this for the oil) didnt give us overflight rights during the Bosnian war. I wonder was it because Bosnia doesnt have oil.
PS to the poster slots above: your'e absolutely right about we have to be a better country than weare currently and be the best we can be related to of course ourselves. we're a great country; bu there's always room to be better. Or that bitter lol jk
You really are an ignorant fuck. Americans went all too willingly to Vietnam, did not need any help from French to step in that clusterfuck.
How nice of you to gloss over the truth. I thank you for that.
Ooh you must be wary wary mad. Your profanity really got your point across
lmao at the arrogance and ignorance here, truly.
if you had been connected to Germany by land in 1939 they would have blitkreiged their way through to Washington like a hotknife though butter.
it was only the fact the reticent yanks had 3 years to think about it and convert all their factories to munitions, and that Russia broke the back of the German army anyway that the allies managed to win at all.
Well, now, there's a rock solid fact. It's completely detached from speculation and conjecture. Just how I like it!
Would have the US funded the german military and eugenics politics if Germany had been next door to the US?
Everything points out to a negative answer.
Unless of course you were switzerland. Wonder why? We could have Goldman Sachs-ed them to death.
France doesn't fly SU-27 Flankers. Its not that hard to ID these jets. Hell use google.
if you think that's an SU-27, you're blind
No, he's just a fucking idiot, like you. You guys such join a fastasy occupation league. I have you winning it.
have you not been bitchslapped enough yet?
WTF is the matter, DeVry wouldn't give you your money back?
Why is no one paying attention to the fact that this entire article is false? That was a rebel jet being shot down by Gaddafi's forces, not one of Gaddafi's jets being shot down by the French. This article is full of shit and I'm disappointed in ZH. The French jets were only doing recon.

Right now Yanks are the pussies
I just wrote that one down. I've heard Zionist, Imperialist, War-Mongering, Colonialist, and many others.
Yankees are 'pussies'...that's a new one for me.
Thanks for expanding my understanding of my own countrymen.
Exactly - lets keep our criticsm pointed to the Gubermint officials that pull the strings. Many of our US folks are waking up and starting brush fires all over - our true pu$$ies are the fat, creepy folks captured in the mass "people of walmart" emails. The rest are coming out of our collective Coma
I concur, too busy getting buggered by Wall street and their asses kicked in too many other Arab countries, so is understandable I suppose
My ID skills aren't what they used to be.
Are those two Su-27s in the same frame augering in? And another already down?
That is a hell of a picture.
So much for air dominance.
There are going to be some crazy stories out of this war.
I think it is three progessive frames with the plane going down and exploding. I wonder what kind of reception the parachuting pilot is going to get?
it was reported the pilot did not survive. not sure if he died from being injured in his aircraft, crashing into the ground, or from the locals tearing him apart...
My bad.
G-d. I'm getting old. I guess I am officially one of those people that will believe anything.
I am a cheese eating moron.
Now I'm looking at this picture of the Pope, bin Ladin and Sasquatch ...

Man you are gullible. I thought everyone knew they were all the same person.
No. Three frames side by side of the same event. Only one down.
That's what I thought at first too. I was thinking: "wow, what are the chances of THREE jets going down in the same frame, with two still in the air when the picture was taken!"
I believe it's a MiG-23. Libya mainly has those and Mirage F-1s.
Photoshopped anyway, so it doesn't really matter.
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/video/plane-shot-down-by-libyan-rebe...
I don't see any evidence that it's photoshopped.
With that pilots chute just starting to open at about 3-400', he might be a little shorter at the end of the day than he was when he rolled out of bed.
Looks like a mirage F1. French sold it to them and build the munitions to shoot it down. Good deal. (sarcasm). I don't see Su-27s in the mix, at least in the photos above. Glad I have gold/silver/foodstuffs/defensives. B/c I can't fathom what the world is going to look like even a year from now.
Looks like a mirage F1.
na, definite mig23. look at that center pic, the mid sweep on the wings
Al Jazeera reported that it was a rebel Mig ... one of their only aircraft.
Same reported on BBC feed:
11.54. Libyan rebels have acknowledged the plane which crashed in flames in Benghazi early on Saturday belonged to them and it was shot down by Col Gaddafi's forces.

not a mirage f1. Nice going. +1
What is that corporation that Oliver Sarkozy, George Herbert Walker Bush, and the patriarch of the Bin Ladin family all own together? Oh yeah, the Carlyle group. Well all three families must be quite pleased right about now.
Something tells me they won't be pleased for too long LH.
These desert foxes have sneaky ways.
Something tells me France is going to explode shortly. All those dis-enfranchised arabs in the ghettos... and then saif gaddafi leaking Sarko's illegality.

Kudos to the rebels, very well orchestrated.
The frogs will save the day - their tanks have four gears - one forward three reverse.
lol, not bad appraisal, but no tanks on ground allowed by UN deal. Only air strikes, officially. Remember what happened to Uk special forces group recently. I wouldn't be surprised if they're back as those planes will need ground support not to bomb the wrong crowd!
planes will need ground support not to bomb the wrong crowd
I was wondering if that would get mentioned. FAC's would be a definite requirement.

Please re-check, the photo shows a airplane which belonged to the opposition forces shut down by Lybian army.
It happened earlier today already. Later in the afternoon french airplanes came and just did exploration.
That aircraft was a Libyan Mig-23.
German news source say it belonged to the part of the army which changed to opposition forces. It was one of the few airplanes they had
Yes, the fucking frogs shot down a friendly. The joys of joint ops. Thanks, Hillary, expect many more happy returns.
That's what I thought.
Is there are evidence that the French have shot down a Libyan aircraft?
Not being reported on any of the International TV channels.
Agence France Presse is reporting that it was indeed one of the rebels' aircraft, shot down by pro-Gaddafi forces on the edge of Benghazi. The aircraft was one of a very few the rebels had, being flown by pilots who defected to the rebels a couple of weeks ago.
Which begs the question:
Are the good civilians in the T-72s or the T-62s?
That plane went down this morning, ECT. The french planes penetrated Libyan soil after the end of Paris conference with Arab league +EU+USA/Canada : 15.30 ECT. So french planes are now as we speak bombing the tank columns near/in Benghazi. No other nation planes are operational at this moment. This will follow maybe this evening or tomorrow. UK hornets are just taking off from french base at Solenzara, Corsica, 1000 km from TRipoli. Less than one hr. flight time. 20 Rafales planes in air over Libya, shooting on tanks according to TV at this moment.
No one is commenting on the fact that it was 8 years ago today that we started the war with Iraq. Not that it's anything more than coincidence, but what a coincidence.

That is the way it is. Made me laugh. Spot on.
Well, myself and others here have been warning that the zionist NWO like to start wars around the time of the jew holydays of Purim-this weekend!!!
I reckon as we speak ground forces will be going in to take out the Libyan Army around Benghazi. The Sheeple ain,t being told the truth, thats a cert.
Supermoon, the french to the rescue!
They may employ the new French tank for a poss ground offensive, with multiple white flag deployment points and the usual, 1 gear forward, 4 backward, standard french military vehicle gear box.
And of course we will be seeing those French assault rifles on E-Bay, "Almost New! Never fired, only dropped once!"
If you're going to do the joke at least get it right:
"How many gears does a French tank have? 5, 4 reverse and 1 forward in case the enemy attacks from the rear."
How many French men does it take to successfully defend Paris?
Nobody knows, It's NEVER BEEN ATTEMPTED!
Try Verdun 1916.371,000 French casualties to defend Paris.
I see you disregarded the word "SUCCESSFULLY".
It was a success, did you ever visit a school, how the f*** did you learn to read.
Goldenballs is correct, the Germans did NOT capture Paris in WW I.
Which is precisely why the inference wasn't toward WWI. They also didn't capture it during the Korean War or the Falklands War but I didn't think that needed spelled out.
What do you mean by successfully? What would represent a success and a failure?
Successfully measured by not needing 60,000+ dead G.I.'s to liberate it from Nazi control.
The Germans made it to Paris during WWI?
This must be the kind of excellence you can expect from US college smart educated people.
Look Helmet, Jean-Paul, Sven, or whatever the fuck your name is...if you can't follow the conversation then just get the fuck out of it.
