It Begins: France Commences Military Action Over Libya

Tyler Durden's picture

It has begun - From the AP: "Top officials from the United States, Europe and the Arab world have announced immediate military action to protect civilians amid combat between Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi's forces and rebel fighters. French President Nicolas Sarkozy said after an emergency summit in Paris on Saturday that France has already taken military action against Libya. Sarkozy said "our determination is total." Earlier Saturday, Libyan government troops forces stormed into the rebel capital of Benghazi, apparently ignoring a proclaimed cease-fire and potentially complicating any allied military action."

The photo below shows what happens when a Libyan jet takes on a French fighter jet:

More from Al Arabiya:

Several French Rafale fighter jets on Saturday overflew "all Libyan territory" on reconnaissance mission, ready to enforce an air-exclusion zone to halt Muammar Qaddafi’s attacks on opposition, a French military source said, as Western leaders met in Paris to consider their next steps.

The planes were in the air not far from Libya this afternoon and were ready to carry out air strikes if there are orders from President Nicolas Sarkozy, a military official with knowledge of the preparations said on condition of anonymity.

World leaders gathered in Paris on Saturday to discuss a coordinated military intervention in Libya, where Muammar Gaddafi defied the West with an advance into the rebel stronghold of Benghazi.

A witness from the western town of Zintin has told Al Arabiya that Gaddafi forces were pounding the town with artillery and residents, including women and children, were taking refuge hideouts in the city.

The witness added that Gaddafi forces were attempting to subdue the opposition-held town because of its strategic location west of the capital Tripoli.

An unnamed U.S. official has said the ongoing violence against Libyan civilians "obviously has an impact" on the international community's next steps

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, British Prime Minister David Cameron and French President Sarkozy met privately and then sat down with Arab leaders, an African Union representative, European Union representatives and European heads of state to prepare rapid U.N.-mandated action.

After Gaddafi broke his pledge of a ceasefire overnight, sources close to the Paris talks said military strikes could start as soon as the meeting ends on Saturday afternoon, with France, Britain and Canada in an initial operation and any participation by the United States or Arab nations coming later.

"The strikes could start around 3 or 4 o'clock (1400-1500 GMT)," one source said, adding that Gaddafi's advance into the eastern city of Benghazi had increased pressure to act fast.

A second source said it was "certainly possible" that strikes would start straight after the meeting.

Sarkozy will address the media after the meeting wraps up at around 3:30 p.m. (1430 GMT) and Clinton, Cameron and Merkel are also expected to make statements.

Iraq's foreign minister was at the talks, as was the Qatari prime minister and United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, even though Germany is not expected to participate in any action for now.

Determined to prove its diplomatic clout after its clumsy handling of the revolt in Tunisia, Paris has been at the forefront of coordinating a world response to the crisis in Libya, where Gaddafi's troops outgun rag-tag and poorly armed rebel forces. Sarkozy was the first foreign leader to recognize the opposition and drop support for Gaddafi.

Backed by Cameron, Sarkozy convened Saturday's talks in a matter of hours after pushing France's U.N. Security Council partners hard this week to back a resolution allowing possible military action and a no-fly zone over Libya.

NATO ambassadors met in Brussels earlier on Saturday to discuss involvement by the 28-member military alliance in enforcing a no-fly zone, but no decision was taken.

A NATO diplomat said Britain, the United States and Canada were in favour of NATO taking a lead in any operation but said Paris was lukewarm on the idea.

"There could be a decision tomorrow saying that NATO will engage in a no-fly zone, but it's still not clear whether it will be a coalition of the willing, or a NATO operation," the diplomat said.

"France seems to have some problem with it being a NATO operation, given NATO's reputation in the Arab world as a result of Afghanistan and given that NATO is seen as an alliance dominated by the United States."

He added: "What is certain is that time is pressing. A delay of 12 hours of so could be very harmful."

Gaddafi's push into Libya's second city of 670,000 people, in spite of the ceasefire pledged on Friday, appeared to be an attempt to pre-empt Western military action.

France and Britain declined to react to the latest attacks ahead of the Paris talks, but a French government source said the international community must act fast.

"Everything is ready (to act) but the decision is now a political one. It's clear we have to move quickly," he said.

French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe met EU Foreign Minister Catherine Ashton earlier on Saturday to discuss the EU's role.

In the meantime pro Gaddafi forces in Tripoli threaten all out civil war, as per Al Jazeera (watch live coverage after the jump).

Before the French Revolution I might add; meaning French Royalists aided us against British Royals [who are and were German]. That would be like the Russian Czar [German also] helping us and then later we have to thank the Bolsheviks.

What?  The French re-writing history to camouflage their self-serving interests?  You mean like selling nuclear technology to Iran?  Wait...that's a story for a year or so from now.  I'm sure they're already working on the historical revision.

Still waiting for a declaration of war from Congress per the U.S. Constitution; or even an 'authorization of use of force' by Congress. Since no U.S. National Security interest has even been hinted at, and no eminent threat against the United States exists, any action by the United States Armed Forces ordered by the POTUS or his teleprompter would be an impeachable offense.

Also, a recent survey showed across the political spectrum 65% of Americans are against any armed intervention in Libya. Almost as many that were against TARP. I am just sayin'; BTFD.

Ron Paul is not surprised there is no declaration of war, just surprised no vote at all of any kind. Of course the closeted RINO/homo Lindsey Gayham is in this war a-go-go.

Could someone point me to the part of the Constitution that says the UN Security Council authorizes the US to go to war? I am having trouble finding that clause.

Correct. Wasn't it bush who said that to him it was just a god damn piece of paper?

http://www.rense.com/general69/paper.htm

now since this article first appeared there has been a effort mounted to question its veracity. i for one cannot vouch for it, but to me it does sound exactly like something bush would say.

The constitution has no power unless moral men give it, its power by whatever means necessary. That is the dirty little secret. It lies in the Smithstonian collecting dust now. Our children go to government schools and never hear a word about it. Our courts are ruled by agency now instead of the Constitution. on and on it goes until the sheep awaken from their slumber, whenever that grand day comes, may it come soon.........

Don't forget, he went to harvard and yale. Yet to my knowledge, not one person ever came forward and said, yes they knew him from college, and not one girl friend came forward that he dated while he was supposedly there at those schools. yet this man cannot put two words together in a sentence. strange if you ask me. yet this is also the case with obama. he said he want to school here and there, yet not one person can vouch for that information. it is as if these men were created out of thin air and their histories were written for them and then they became president. isn't it strange that tommy franks went to the same school as george bush's future wife, while he lived in west texas. of course he was jewish. strange circumstances if you ask me. bush never had any real job experience. supposedly he played around with the oil business but never made it really. they set him up with the rangers baseball team so he could appear to have something going for him. i figure franks was a sayanim deep sleeper agent, who was brought up and told to join the american army and was promoted as needed and when the time was right, he was used for his appointed task. some of you may think this is farfetched, but you really don't understand the true enemy and how he works and how his plans many times are multi generational in scope. they are clever. i will have to hand it to them.

Well we can keep this very simple Where in the world is the location of most of the gold of the world?  Wherever that gold is, you will find them nearby. They tell us that physical gold and silver is a bad idea, yet they like it ,and they hold it, and they want all of it , and they want to control all of it.  The United States is being used right now for its purpose and that purpose is and probably always was, to be the world policeman for the new world order. Who else in this world can field such armies as we can filled with mind numbed volunteer robots doing the will of their zionist masters?  You see, all of those computer war games, that these men played while they were young , were being used to condition their minds into thinking that war is just a game and in their subconscious minds, they thought this as they went and joined up and in their conscious minds they told themselves that we are joining to protect the rights of amerikans and for reasons of patriotism. So they are used and they are thrown away and they die for nothing and rich men get richer. It will continue on, unless someone stops it.

I have a question. What is the endgame? What if this war lasts longer then usual? The United Nothing have passed a resoultion without thinking about the consequences. This reminds me of the War in Iraq. We go in guns blazing but have plans after Baghdad falls. The rebels themselves are not a united force. They are filled with seperatist, jihadist, former soldiers, regular citizens who all have differeing goals. Second Libya is a tribal nation. If you take K-Daffy Duck out of the scene the nation will descend into chaos. And why does dumbass ZerObama need the consent from the UN to go to war. Doesn't the "constituional scholar" know that Congress has the power to delcare war. Not him nor the UN. He cares more about international law then our own Constitution just like the presidents before him.

Yet again we are going to be involved in a war which will not go according to plan. We will blindfully put the rebels in power and the country will descend into chaos.

I'm not so sure about the "go in guns blazing" part as the POTUS has repeatedly stated that the US will have minimal involvement in this matter. And for the most part I believe it as US is already involved in two middle east wars and jusy doesn't have the stomach to deal with a third theater. Supporting actor on the supply side sure but not much US involvement with respects to offensive operations.

My forecast for the situation is as follows: the french, brits, danes, et al will make a sorry mess of this operation as they dont have the resources or the will to fully take down Kdaffys forces. In Afghanistan the french, brits and danes constantly rely on US air support when the Taliban fighters pin them down time and time again.

The plane that was shot down WAS THE ONLY FIGHTER BOMBER THE REBELS IN BENGHAZI HAD! That's right, it was a rebel plane, not Libyan airforce. The reports say it was shot down by Gaddafi's forces but if the French shot it down, that would mark the first of many "Friendly fire" killings in this war.

" A fighter plane has been shot down over Benghazi. Although it was initially thought to belong to Gaddafi's forces, rebels in the city have said it was their only jet."

But, so far, and I could be way off here, I am impressed with the way Obama has played down this continuing disaster (today Libya) as far as killing more of our American men and women. The last thing this country wants or needs is another futile war similar to Iraq and Afganistan, at a cost of billions more. I am sick and tired of Americans dying for dictators 10,000 miles away. Let France, England, Germany start taking over. We need to defend our borders and take care of Us. Do you really think Al qaeda is going to rush us in a squadron of F-16s and destroy NY? I am not sure the image of a 6'3 president standing behind a 5'3 president is best described as  playing it down; perhaps a better description would be "hiding".  If the man had cojones he would have not permitted US involvement or at least he would have brought it to the people or the congress. Yes they do have SAM missle batteries. But the problem is with this older technology, the minute they acquire the target with their radar aiming systems they also betray their locations and countermeasures are instituted and homing missles are fired at  the missle batteries, using their own radar signals to home in on the target. His SAM's won't last long if he turns on the electronics.

If the U.S. with its carrier group in position wanted to take the lead in the Libyan attack, it was hampered by the accelerating world view that the U.S. is an empire pushing war in Muslim countries to secure oil.

In addition, there a widening view that U.S. war mongering is tied to the interests of Israel;  hence, the continued propaganda targeting Israel’s foremost enemy, Iran.

For these reasons, Defense Secretary Gates stepped forward with his reluctance for a no-fly zone and Obama postured as a background figure.  The fact is, only the United States, with its carrier group, its nearby land bases and its vast in-air refueling capabilities, can support the bombing and no-fly zone operations.

The initial tough talk from Britain and the hair trigger response from Sarkozy, along with the  continued mention of Arab League jets to be involved, are all used to position the United States as only one of the participants.

France does not have the moral authority or the military capability to carry even a significant part of this operation without the presence of a superpower.

IOW, no planes left their fields without a U.S. okay.  This reluctance by the U.S. to show initial leadership in a war of this kind may be an encouraging sign for the future (Obama already ruling out ground troops, and the U.N. resolution prohibiting “occupation”).

Perhaps when the bullets stop flying in Libya and the citizens have a chance for input into their government, the world will be more realistic about the dangers from the United Nations’ role in helping with “justice” – i.e., harder for the U.S. with its tarnished image to push the U.N. into setting  up a puppet government the U.S. controls.

This is total rubbish. Libya is on the doorstep of Europe and there are a number of european air bases close enough to Libya that the no fly zone can be enforced without carrier capability or American help. Anyway, the French are sending an aircraft carrier.

The french have 14 air tankers. I don't know how many the UK have but probably more than the french. Air to air refueling capability will not a problem.

Clearly it will be much easier with the USA helping but to say it can't be done without the US is just wrong.

I am not only talking militarily, I am talking politically.  France could not do this on its own, with China, Russia, Germany looking on.    France has jet air planes, but who’s going to tell them where to bomb; the US has the intelligence planes, the pilot rescue programs… One carrier is not enough…  In a war, all kinds of things start happening… and France can’t support it.

The European states have become a hollow military power and the economic crisis is forcing them to cut capabilities more.  Nagging them to contribute more to their defense hasn’t worked in the past and it isn’t going to work now.  Europe didn’t exactly leap to Obama’s side has he pranced into Afghanistan.

The US needs to stop subsidizing EU member state defense with Bernanke’s printing press, i.e., America's standard of living.  End the Fed.

"The recognition of the insuperable limits to his knowledge ought indeed to teach the student of society a lesson of humility which should guard him against becoming an accomplice in men's fatal striving to control society – a striving which makes him not only a tyrant over his fellows, but which may well make him the destroyer of a civilization which no brain has designed but which has grown from the free efforts of millions of individuals." -- Friedrich von Hayek in his Nobel Prize address

“It is a mistake to view what happened as some accident, or a natural development.  It was a pre-mediated campaign to subvert the economy and the political protections of the vast majority of US citizens.” – Jesse’s Café Americain

“There is perhaps no topic as important to the average American today as rising prices. Whether we consider food, gasoline, or clothing, the cost of living is increasing significantly. At a time of high unemployment, rising prices trap American families between a rock and a hard place. While rising prices colloquially are referred to as "inflation," true inflation is defined as an increase in the money supply, and all other things being equal, an increase in the money supply leads to a rise in prices. Inflation is and always has been throughout history a monetary phenomenon, and its destructive effects have ruined societies from the Roman Empire to Weimar Germany to modern-day Zimbabwe.

Blame for the most recent round of price increases has been laid at the feet of the Federal Reserve's program of quantitative easing

“The price of cotton is up more than 170% over the past year, oil is up over 40%, and many categories of food staples are seeing double-digit price growth. This means that food, clothing, and gasoline will become increasingly expensive over the coming year. American families, many of whom already live paycheck to paycheck, increasingly will be forced by these rising prices into unwilling tradeoffs. Rising prices lead to consumers purchasing ground beef rather than steak, drinking water rather than milk, and choosing canned vegetables over fresh. Clothes are worn until they are threadbare, in order to conserve money that keeps food on the table and pays the heating bill. While some might argue that this new frugality is a good thing, frugality is virtuous only when it results from free choice, not when it is forced upon the citizenry by the Fed's ruinous monetary policy.”  -- Ron Paul Our Enemy the Fed,  before the US House of Representatives Committee on Financial Services Monetary Policy and Rising Prices, March 17, 2011

“The insiders come through ‘with flying colors,’ while millions of victims are ruined, destroyed by forces which they refuse to believe exist.  Heartbreak, losses of homes and businesses, breakdowns, suicides, destruction of families, these are the results…” – Eustace Mullins

If I am Qadhafi or one of his sons, I go at the weakest link.  I plan a terrorist attack in Paris so as to turn the French populace against any French military adventure in the ME.  I'll bet money that such plans are already under consideration.  It only takes one bomb in a train station or other public place to turn French sentiment 180 degrees, if it even supports current Sarkozy policy today.

If the French back away, what's left?  The Brits have lost their appetite for fighting any more wars, the rest of NATO only serves a support role, and the US is already spread too thin.  Of course, the US has a penchant for quagmires, and Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan might not fully satisfy.

The British, as well as Americans, often fail to react to the atrocities left behind by their countrymen in wars fought for the monied interests, unawares or misinformed because such topic is taboo in the MSM. This, fortunately, is rapidly changing because of Internet-user source choice.

The Rothschilds' formula of a ‘managed conflict’ for the First World War originated from the difficulty they had encountered in defeating the Boers (early Dutch settlers on virgin land in South Africa) from 1899 to 1901…

“In 1889, because of the discovery of vast wealth in gold and diamonds in South Africa, the Rothschilds came back to loot the nation with 400,000 British soldiers pitted against 30,000 ‘irregulars,’ that is farmers with rifles…

“The British fought a ‘no prisoner,’ scorched earth war, destroying farms, and mercilessly shooting down Boers who tried to surrender,” according to The World Order.  “It was in this war that the institution of ‘concentration camps’ was brought to the world…

“This genocidal policy would next be used by the Rothschild financed Bolsheviks in Russia, who adopted the Boer War concept to murder 66 million Russians between 1917 and 1967…”

There was never any "popular reaction" to either of these atrocities… Arthur Ochs in his NYTimes actually praised "Uncle Joe" Stalin during his genocide by starvation of millions in the Ukraine, the breadbasket of Europe...

Yeah, right.

One terrorist attack on US soil and we get the martyr treatment, meanwhile years of terrorist activity in Europe, hundreds more dead didn't make the news.

They are the over-reacting weaklings, lol.
