It Begins: France Commences Military Action Over Libya

Tyler Durden's picture

It has begun - From the AP: "Top officials from the United States, Europe and the Arab world have announced immediate military action to protect civilians amid combat between Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi's forces and rebel fighters. French President Nicolas Sarkozy said after an emergency summit in Paris on Saturday that France has already taken military action against Libya. Sarkozy said "our determination is total." Earlier Saturday, Libyan government troops forces stormed into the rebel capital of Benghazi, apparently ignoring a proclaimed cease-fire and potentially complicating any allied military action."

The photo below shows what happens when a Libyan jet takes on a French fighter jet:

More from Al Arabiya:

Several French Rafale fighter jets on Saturday overflew "all Libyan territory" on reconnaissance mission, ready to enforce an air-exclusion zone to halt Muammar Qaddafi’s attacks on opposition, a French military source said, as Western leaders met in Paris to consider their next steps.

The planes were in the air not far from Libya this afternoon and were ready to carry out air strikes if there are orders from President Nicolas Sarkozy, a military official with knowledge of the preparations said on condition of anonymity.

World leaders gathered in Paris on Saturday to discuss a coordinated military intervention in Libya, where Muammar Gaddafi defied the West with an advance into the rebel stronghold of Benghazi.

A witness from the western town of Zintin has told Al Arabiya that Gaddafi forces were pounding the town with artillery and residents, including women and children, were taking refuge hideouts in the city.

The witness added that Gaddafi forces were attempting to subdue the opposition-held town because of its strategic location west of the capital Tripoli.

An unnamed U.S. official has said the ongoing violence against Libyan civilians "obviously has an impact" on the international community's next steps

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, British Prime Minister David Cameron and French President Sarkozy met privately and then sat down with Arab leaders, an African Union representative, European Union representatives and European heads of state to prepare rapid U.N.-mandated action.

After Gaddafi broke his pledge of a ceasefire overnight, sources close to the Paris talks said military strikes could start as soon as the meeting ends on Saturday afternoon, with France, Britain and Canada in an initial operation and any participation by the United States or Arab nations coming later.

"The strikes could start around 3 or 4 o'clock (1400-1500 GMT)," one source said, adding that Gaddafi's advance into the eastern city of Benghazi had increased pressure to act fast.

A second source said it was "certainly possible" that strikes would start straight after the meeting.

Sarkozy will address the media after the meeting wraps up at around 3:30 p.m. (1430 GMT) and Clinton, Cameron and Merkel are also expected to make statements.

Iraq's foreign minister was at the talks, as was the Qatari prime minister and United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, even though Germany is not expected to participate in any action for now.

Determined to prove its diplomatic clout after its clumsy handling of the revolt in Tunisia, Paris has been at the forefront of coordinating a world response to the crisis in Libya, where Gaddafi's troops outgun rag-tag and poorly armed rebel forces. Sarkozy was the first foreign leader to recognize the opposition and drop support for Gaddafi.

Backed by Cameron, Sarkozy convened Saturday's talks in a matter of hours after pushing France's U.N. Security Council partners hard this week to back a resolution allowing possible military action and a no-fly zone over Libya.

NATO ambassadors met in Brussels earlier on Saturday to discuss involvement by the 28-member military alliance in enforcing a no-fly zone, but no decision was taken.

A NATO diplomat said Britain, the United States and Canada were in favour of NATO taking a lead in any operation but said Paris was lukewarm on the idea.

"There could be a decision tomorrow saying that NATO will engage in a no-fly zone, but it's still not clear whether it will be a coalition of the willing, or a NATO operation," the diplomat said.

"France seems to have some problem with it being a NATO operation, given NATO's reputation in the Arab world as a result of Afghanistan and given that NATO is seen as an alliance dominated by the United States."

He added: "What is certain is that time is pressing. A delay of 12 hours of so could be very harmful."

Gaddafi's push into Libya's second city of 670,000 people, in spite of the ceasefire pledged on Friday, appeared to be an attempt to pre-empt Western military action.

France and Britain declined to react to the latest attacks ahead of the Paris talks, but a French government source said the international community must act fast.

"Everything is ready (to act) but the decision is now a political one. It's clear we have to move quickly," he said.

French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe met EU Foreign Minister Catherine Ashton earlier on Saturday to discuss the EU's role.

In the meantime pro Gaddafi forces in Tripoli threaten all out civil war, as per Al Jazeera (watch live coverage after the jump).

Looking at things from a Kissengerian point of view, why are the western powers going to war with Libya? Qaddafi has been a good and faithful servant in supplying oil to the west. So why go to war over oil if it was already being supplied?

My initial take on this is that the $$ will begin surging when FX opens Sunday. I'm Central pacific, Dumb money will panic into the $$. This would do well in killing the recent europhoria. (temporarily).

It's all about 'internationalism' now bitches.

Can you trade SDR's yet?

This shit stinks to high heavens. No way is it a coincidence that American empire stands aside and 'waits' for the U.N to act first.

IT IS A SET-UP.

IT IS WHY oBAMA IS THE 'OFFICE HOLDER'

$$ will spike, then crash and burn.

9/11 was just a preperation. The crisis is just around the fucking corner and the 'not letting it go to waste' will be the dollars collapse and subsequent exit as the primary reserve currency.

The replacement reserve will be another form of fiat in an attempt to force a one world dictatorship.

Just my two cents worth.

wow...what did I say like 3 days ago?  France wants to try out its toys.  They need operational experience from the CDG and they need to see the Rafale in combat ops.

If France can succeed in imposing its will on a 3rd world country remotely, its international prestige goes way up.  This is an exercise in geopolitical power projection, no more, no less.

Some here underestimate the French Military capability.

France is doing this to save Italy from having to get involved. Italy is and has been Libya's lover for a while, and they don't want to see 40% of their oil supplies jeopardized, so the Italians and French have already swapped assurances.

And yes, there are almost without a doubt, French Foreign Legion Units on the ground, either arming & training the rebels and/or directly engaging Libyan Paramilitary.

Colonel Q is relying heavily on his AfrikaCorps in doing the depraved work, and they will not be so happy to see French Foreign Legion operations.

Its amazing how most people just do what they are told and never question it. Let this be a lesson to anyone who ask the  question will US Army troops fire on Amerikans. Sure they will do whatever they are told. We are now in a time when the world is full of mind numbed robots doing what they are told and perhaps it always has been so, but now, it seems so obvious. Maybe I just notice more now. Hmmm.....

Unfortunately, the people of Libya - whether for or against Daffy - will have no say in this Anglo-American 'game'. The objective is simply to replace Daffy with a more compliant dictator to secure future oil supplies for Britain (oh ... and France). Libya has the largest oil reserves in Aftica (though Nigeria produces more each day, Libya has more in the ground).

Daffy is a little too unpredictable for TPTB and likely to give "too much" to China if spoken to the wrong way by Hilarity or Cameruin ... so he simply has to go. The MSM propaganda that he is suddenly another Pol Pot or Saddam Hussein (after years of being good buddies with Tony Blair and the British royals) is to be expected as cover for the operation.

The flanking manoeuvres to install more compliant puppets in bordering Tunisia and Egypt just prior to this charade were to ensure that neither of those non-oil exporters would side with Daffy in any way. Simple.

Where is this idea that the US is not involved militarily coming from? CNN, MSNBC etc.

Obama specifically stated that the US would use force just not ground troops (within the limitations of the UN ruling)

Sarkozy goes first and presto this is an EU vs. Libya deal while Obama disappears to Rio.  The US is totally involved notwithstanding the sleight of hand and weasel words from the Admin and MSM.

Witnesses reported Saturday that five American F-18s, two C-17s and a C-130 cargo plane landed Saturday at Aviano, which is home to the 31st Fighter Wing.

Two U.S. officials said U.S. forces are not involved in the military operation at this point. Officials spoke on condition of anonymity.

Spokesmen at both Aviano and Sigonella, a naval air station which primarily provides logistical support for the U.S. 6th Fleet and NATO forces, didn't immediately return calls.

Two thoughts...    One..  If attempted obfuscation in regards to the devaluation of fiat via budget deficits and QE leads to war as has been surmised by Celente, Sprott, Dalio and others then perhaps Eurpopean currency devalution = War with Libya.  Interesting thatit is the French leading the way and Germany abstained from the vote.

TTwo...  Humerous twist???   There is no radiation danger near fukshima...  It is all staged so John Gault has a place to camp out?   :-)   <--  Not true but intersting concept???

This is a PIIG War.

Europe is in a very bad spot if the Ghaddafi drama is not resolved and oil resumes. France and Germany will have to bail Portugal, italy and Spain sooner, rather than later, if the lack of oil hamstrings the PIIGS.

USA only gets 5% from Muammar.

this thing confuses me. First i thought it was a UN operation, now it seems to be scrum, mostly NATO countries. The US did nothing, the UN approved the no-fly zone, then the US President decided to take action. (Hey look at me) but he is going to defy the UN if they want to put boots on the ground? Or NATO? Logically it makes sense, Republicans wanted a no-fly zone, Democrats did not. Arab League despots cast the deciding vote. Finally i know we are going to help civilians, but are you still a civilian if you are driving a rocket launcher? And if some of these (armed) civilians are part of the Muslim caliphate, when do we seperate the wheat from the chaff, are our drones really that smart? Once we achieve some sort of stalemate, (think Iran Iraq, 1980) who is going to finish the job? I understand every President can start one war of his own, and Obama has none, and this one doesn't really count. So what war will he get to start?

I must admit that I worked for several branches of the UN in the past and I am ashamed of having worked there. The whole fiasco of an organisation makes me vomit. It's a joke. If anyone tells you that they work for te UN, please say: "oh, I'm sorry". The UN is fucking JOKE. A lie bigger than the Council on Foreign Relations and the National Endowment for Democracy.

A few things I don't get about all this.

1. If the precedent for US military action is that Gadhafi is killing his own people (as Obama is saying), then what about Bahrain, Yemen, etc?

2. When the WMD were never found in Iraq, Bush used the same rationale about Hussein -- that he was murdering his own people.  Yet, Democrats were still outraged.  And I'm not trying to be political as both parties are frauds, but where is the outrage now?

What I have been wondering all along is this: Who is funding the rebels? Gadaffi would surely have defeated this "uprising" by next week, because he has plenty of money to fund operations. War is not cheap, never has been. I guess we are now begining to get a better picture of where the money to fund all of these "democracy uprisings", which have suddenly and spontanously broken out all over the ME. I never have bought the script feed to us. This has been a multi-international intelligence agencies  operation from the begining. This has probobly been in the works for sometime now. All they had to do was get it started, after that, it would take on a life of it's own.

The "rebels" are TPTB's favourite offensive weapon to destabilise any regime: imported islamic fundamentalists.

The leaders are shipped in, financed and run by MI-6 and the CIA (hence Daffy correctly calling them "Al Qaeda") ... the followers are the usual local crowds that will join any protest once it has started. Therefore, neither "human rights" nor "democracy" will have any showing in the outcome!

Here's a short list of the countries where the leaders have killed their own protesting citizens in the last four years, on a scale and with a style sufficient enough to get video on CNN:

Libya, Egypt, Tunisia, Bahrain, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Zimbabwe, Burma, China, Thailand

In response:

The US seized or blocked leaders' assets in Libya, Burma, and (maybe) Egypt.

The US imposed economic sanctions against Burma and Libya.

The US committed military assets and personnel to Libya.

The US took billions in aid from, and sent the President to attend the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympics in China.

I wonder if SAIS has an Executive Course in Foreign Policy so that I might begin to understand.

China's Ghost Cities

Vast new cities of apartments and shops are being built across China at a rate of ten a year, but they remain almost completely uninhabited ghost towns.

It’s all part of the government’s efforts to keep the economy booming, and there are many people who would love to move in, but it’s simply too expensive for most.

Video journalist Adrian Brown wanders through malls of vacant shops, and roads lined with empty apartment buildings… 64 million apartments are said to be empty across the country and one of the few shop owners says he once didn't sell anything for four or five days.

So are the efforts to boost the economy going to end up having the opposite effect and creating a financial crisis for China?
