In the first quarter, the US economy grew by 3.7%, revised up from an originally reported 2.7% increase. But growth estimates all the way back to the start of 2007 were revised lower. Moreover, the level of real GDP in Q1 was revised down by $100 billion. Does this mean the secular bull market in bonds will continue? And are Treasuries the "last diversifier left"?

The Japanese economy operates on the assumption, soon to be proved false, that the government will always be able to borrow at low interest rates. As internal demand evaporates, the government will have to start hawking its debt outside Japan — in a more realistic world, where interest rates are a lot higher.

Italian Prime Minister Berlusconi Attack At Milan Rally Condemned As "Act Of Terrorism"

Tyler Durden's picture

Populist anger is starting to awake all over the world, as the G-20's actions continue favoring only the "aristocratic" banker class. We hope Berlusconi's mistresses will still find him just as attractive even with a black eye, bleeding lips and busted teeth.

Indeed the crackdown began some time ago.  However, that point of the uprising has been and will be insignificant to what may be the last straw for many here in America and coming populist action.  Our numbers are growing.  Populist rage over the abuse of our constitution is growing significantly and come this April, it looks as if a literal line in the sand will be drawn by, hopefully, a goodly mass needed to take appropriate, peaceful civic action in securing their liberties from a tyrannical state.

This webinar, while a long listen, outlines what has and will happen something I I, along with many of you’re here, will support.  http://www.republicmagazine.com/webinar

The mass withdrawal of financial support to the American Federal Government is drawing near and the Articles of Freedom will be evoked by the masses who care here in America.

I will be standing on that line in the stand.  The crackdown may be bloody or bloodless and I would assume the former, but I will go to my post as this is only peaceful and possibly effective means to an end.  Should they crack down on this civic action of the masses then it may be enough to wake the rest.

Here's what a US president needs to do.

First, he gets into office by saying he's all about change to the people. He says that we need to bring the people in control of Washington, not the special interests. At the same time, he tells the special interests that they will be taken care of. He takes there campaign money so the special interests believe they have him in their pockets.

The new president gets into office, and for the first few months he stays quiet. This is where he prepares. He outlines what needs to be said, what needs to be done. He makes good relationships with those in the military, and a few good congressmen. Then, he makes appointments, most of them being outsiders who truly love the country. He delays putting in the lobbyists. He remains quiet, the elite become nervous but he reassures them that everything is good. The people also become nervous.

Then, once the president has the right support, especially from the military, he makes his move. He EXPOSES the elite, he exposes them for who they are and what they want. He makes his plea to the American people. He tells them what needs to be done, how this country needs to make important moves now or else inevitable bankruptcy will occur. The president double crosses the special interests and makes the information known publically. He exposes the banks, the weapons manufacturers, the insurance co's, big pharma, big food, he exposes them all. The people go into a frenzy with rage but their support for the president is at record levels. The president uses the military as his hammer, he orders them to the fed to have its books opened, he orders the military to protect him from any and all threats from the enraged and terrified elite. All illegal banker bonuses are confiscated and given back to the people. He cuts spending everywhere, and brings back the country to fiscal sanity.

Obviously this type of president would have many powerful enemies, but with the support of the people and especially the military, it could be done.

Of course the main attack and accusation against him will be that he is a dictator and a form of a "hitler". His enemies will make the false accusations but by his actions he will prevail. The military will be there as a show of force, so that his enemies will fear him. This is the only way the country can have a revolution. If it starts from the bottom, then the powers that be will declare martial law, giving them more power. Only if a just, honest, and brave leader emerges and doublecrosses the power elite can this nation survive as a republic.

It's getting ugly out there. In Greece, police in Athens defused early on Saturday two bombs placed outside the Greek media pension fund:

The bombs placed outside the ETAP-MME fund in the central Athens district of Neos Kosmos each contained a kilogramme of explosives but faulty wiring prevented them from going off, the source told AFP.

Police had earlier sealed off the area after private television station Alter received an anonymous phone call warning of an imminent explosion.

The ETAP-MME fund was pieced together in 2008 in a controversial pensions cost-cutting reform by the previous conservative government that drew strong union opposition and sparked three general strikes.

The new socialist administration that was elected in October is also planning to reform the Greek pensions system which is again threatened with bankruptcy. The unions have again warned that they will oppose the move.

Will the world crumble into a state of anarchy? Let's hope not.

"Mentally disordered," yes, so they always say.  Which means, that anybody who attacks a world leader will automatically have an insanity defense.  And of course, top quality defense counsel, for free.  Not that anybody should get any ideas from that.

In the UK they have a thing called the Fixated Threat Assessment Centre (FTAC). Anyone that is thought to be a threat to the like of the Prime Minister are picked up and ‘disappeared’ into the mental institutions – no trial or anything. It’s also handy for getting rid of troublesome political dissenters too. Stalin would be proud of the Labour government in the UK. The trouble is that the alternative party, the Conservatives, plan to continue to use it if they ever get into power.

I'll be impressed when the populist anger moves in an organized fashion. Read some of what went on in the 30s in US, the moves against the elites and for the regular folks only happened when elites were very very scared a few were smart enough to know they needed to give some power to live to another day.

"You gotta give it to the Europeans, their governments fear the people."

I grew up all over Europe and I can second that. The politicians over there are keenly aware of the fury of the masses. Plus as Europeans we have been brought up with a social mindset and are used to hitting the pavement to fight for our rights. I personally found myself in clashes with the 'Polizei' in the 1980s. Over here in the U.S. the youth has been completely domesticated and fear of an uprising is very small. Take for instance the case of the tazing of that kid during the Kerry speech - in Europe there would have been revenge attacks on police stations or police cars. Which is also why cops over there don't act like cowboys like they do here.

"the youth has been completely domesticated"

I think the neologism for this is "affluenza", the cure for which is probably "realigize".

Realigize:  to recognize reality; an awakening to reality or truth;  to experience the bursting of one's "bubble" that one has heretofore been living in separate and apart from reality.

Yes, while America is a superpower in the present day, she is but a minow as a student of history. The Europeans know the dangers of giving a government ultimate power.

The brainwashing of the youth in this country is amazingly effective and consistent. It is the only country I have lived/worked in where my junior (and some senior) colleagues alike look on in awe as I take 3 week vacations at a time. It is as if they have no voice, no ability to question any authority, to break the status quo.

Only when the pain intensifies, perhaps when their I-pods or cable TV is taken from them, may they take action.

Isn't that the beauty of the EU molecool?

The mobs go after Berlusconi he says "No its the EU Minister of Jackoff. It's out of my hands!"

So the mob is goes over to the EU Minster of Jackoff and the Minister says:

Are you from an affiliate cnbs and do you really know what your talking about?

I've had a gutsfull of Berlusconi

"I’ve had a gutsfull of Berlusconi". Say it public, in all the bars and the restaurants. Shout it out loud on the radio and at the traffic lights. Write in to the newspapers, send e-mails to both Italian and International websites, to the e-mail addresses of Deputies and Senators. "I’ve had a gutsfull of Berlusconi". I don’t want to spend my days looking out for the latest Alfano Bill, the latest Ghedini bullshit or the latest legal acquittal of a corruptor. I don’t want to get into yet another discussion on the umpteenth “ad personam” law, or on the way in which democracy is being taken for a ride time and again. I can no longer tolerate these servants that continue to blabber on about reforming the justice system on our television programmes. The kind of people that continue to defend the indefensible and get paid to lie, cover up and howl.

Greece defies Europe as EMU crisis turns deadly serious

Euroland's revolt has begun. Greece has become the first country on the distressed fringes of Europe's monetary union to defy Brussels and reject the Dark Age leech-cure of wage deflation.

"Salaried workers will not pay for this situation: we will not proceed with wage freezes or cuts. We did not come to power to tear down the social state," he said.

Were we to believe that a country in the grip anarchist riots and prey to hard-Left unions would risk its democracy to please Brussels?

Dear Sirs - I like a lot of what ZH does.

But yet another time, you show i) an embarassing, outlandish, ignorance of basic matters outside the borders of the United States in the worst tradition of your country (e.g. you seem to have discovered the existence of Dubai 3 weeks ago)ii) an alarming tendency for dangerous and misleading simplification of international events

Maybe getting some Europeans to write for you would avoid you this type of gaffes. Certainly, most of them would not have the revolting arrogance to post with glee and with your "i told you so tone" the news that the US president has been punched in the face. While I personally find that in itself sickening and irresponsible - a tone unworthy of any publication that wants itself to be considered relevant - the real reason why your post is (quite frankly) idiotic, is that the man who hit Berlusconi suffers from mental illness and has been under treatment for 20 years. Such a person is representative of nothing if not a sad and unfortunate human condition and your attempt to portray this as the beginning of some widespread social instability or the end for Italy or Europe is nothing if not proposterous.

Hello people - the guy who did this was mentally unstable.
Ignorant americans and other foreigners (by no means all of the population...)who know next to NOTHING about the Italian situation, should stop rambling about this stuff with their whacky conspiracy theories. keep them for another occasion.

FYI Italy has had none of the financial sector unbalances of caused by US and co. style housing bubbles and you can accuse Berlusconi of everything except favouring the "aristocratic banker class" (whatever that means), since he is not really in favour of free market economics. Conversely, his government has kept the country finances afloat for now - avoiding populist spending sprees that others have followed. For that, he would deserve anything but praise - if you were into serious analysis instead of tabloid - style populism that is.

And also, ZH shows itself to be the truly anti-democratic one, repeadtedly refusing to publish comments that go against the populist mindset of many people of this website (second time i try to write this).
