Looking at these pictures from Barcelona one would think this is Tunisia, Cairo, or at best, Athens. Instead, it is from the once incomparably wealthy capital of Catalunia (although they did have Olympics there: an event guaranteed to result in at least one municipal bankruptcy at some point in the future), and before the Barcelona-Man United game. One can only imagine what happens if Barcelona wins (or is that loses).

Somewhere around 2004-2006, there were non-mainstream news everywhere, that pretty much every western country around the globe, was in the process of changing the role of its military: From dealing with "normal" war, to dealing with civil war. The official reason given of course was terrorism... that reason however not only because of plausibility did not add up, because even countries who usually do not bring troops into other countries were doing it. In other words: Western armies were, and still are, transitioning to dealing with internal wars.
What perhaps is most frightening about this, is not that they do prepare for this, but instead what this preperation implies: That already years ago, they were expecting civil wars, and thus are willing to let it come to this!

Funny thing is - this "socialist greater good" IS one of the major reasons why people in europe are revolting, while people in the USA do not.
There seems to be some aspect of european culture, which americans do not understand. There is a deep-rooted "social contract" here..... the deal is: "We pay those stupid high taxes, we put up with all the crap, BUT in return each one's survival and health becomes a RIGHT. This isn't just treated like another of those void promises by the gov... they actually believe this. Europeans only play the submissive role as long as the social part of the contract between the population and state, is kept up. Once people suffer from poverty and this social "insurance" is rejected, the moral and theoretical premises for them behaving docile are taken away... to europeans, this is a crime, and they are the judge and executioner in that scenario).
So, you may dislike social programmes all day (which has some logical justification, because in principle, socialism is the definition of non-selfsustainability.... as soon as something cannot finance itself, and must constantly be supplied with external capital, you basically have a socialistic setup), still the deep-rooted affinity to socialism in europe is not just one thing that caused this mess, it simultaneusly is the reason why people revolt here.

Wow, just spent over a week in Barca (marina area) so unfortunately didnt witness this but i DID see the running-up to this event at Plaza Catalunya which has been basically literred with junk and squatters for over a week before this happened.
I was there with some Spanish friends of mine, and they claim Barca (or, Barna) is still rather rich (unemp ~13%) versus the South where it can run around 30% unemp.
Regardless, these socialist hippies definitely don't help the cause.
