Japan Finds Plutonium One Mile Away From Fukushima, Doubles Radiation Leak Estimate

Tyler Durden's picture

In a double whammy of bad news from the mainstream media blackouted Fukushima (or perhaps the general population just doesn't care any more) today we learn that not only did The Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency (NISA) double its estimate of the radiation leak in the early days of the Fukushima catastrophe, something we had predicted would happen eventually courtesy of the secretive Japanese government, but that Plutonium from Fukushima has now been found in the town of Okuma, over 1 mile away from the stricken Nuclear Power Plant.

On the fallout estimate doubling:

The Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency says it believes the earthquake-stricken Fukushima plant emitted nearly 800,000 terabecquerels of radioactive material into the air in the days after it was hit by a massive tsunami.

That is more than double the original estimate and is based on new information suggesting the No.1 and No.2 reactors suffered meltdowns much earlier than thought.

The revision reveals the failure to contain the disaster resulted in much more radioactive contamination of the soil, sea and air than the plant's operators had acknowledged.

And far more importantly, on the plutonium and its 87 year half life:

Plutonium that is believed to have come from the crippled Fukushima No. 1 power plant has been detected in the town of Okuma about 1.7 km away from the plant's front gate, a Kanazawa University researcher said Sunday.

It is the first time plutonium ejected by the stricken facility has been found in soil beyond its premises since the March 11 megaquake and tsunami led to a core meltdown there.

Naturally, coming from Japan there had to be a silver lining of lies with the latest mushroom cloud:

Professor Masayoshi Yamamoto of Kanazawa University said the level of plutonium detected in soil in Okuma, Fukushima Prefecture, is lower than the average level observed in Japan after nuclear tests were conducted abroad.

This was the last resort after earlier attempts to lie about the source of the material failed:

The Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Ministry has found plutonium in soil on the nuke plant's grounds, but it was believed to have been fallout from bomb tests abroad.

By analyzing the ratio of three types of isotopes in the plutonium, Yamamoto was able to determine that it was emitted by Fukushima No. 1 and not past bomb tests.

The soil samples were collected by a team of researchers from Hokkaido University before April 22.

Somehow we think by the time this is all over, mutated rabbits will be the least of the demoralized Japanese population, which already is experiencing a demographic crunch.

It's trav(esty's) level of ignorance and stubborness that TPTB rely on to perpetrate these kinds of disasters with impunity.

While true that there is more fuel at Fukushima then there was at Chernobyl, the Japanese have a much better handle on the situation. In addition, instead of keeping it secret and not requesting international help like the Russians, the Japanese are doing just that. In fact, the engineers are in the process of putting the power cord back into operation.

In the end there will be a 30 mile radioactive no go zone, but that will be the extent of the harm. All this doomsayer and alarmist proclamations of disaster is a bunch of nonsense, similar to the declarations of doom from the GOM oil spill that supposedly was going to spread to the east coast of the US all the way to Europe.

A bit of grounded realism is required.

Saying that the Japanese have a much better handle on this than did the Soviets is like saying Lindsay Lohan has a better grip on sobriety than Charlie Sheen.

I also take exception with your implication that this is somehow not an epic clusterfuck of an apocalytpic nightmare just because planet Earth, herself, will probably still be inhabitable on the majority of her surface.

I'll let others explain to you why the implications for Japan's society, infrastructure, population, agriculture and the global economy as well are rather disturbing at the moment.

"an epic clusterfuck of an apocalytpic nightmare" by Matte Black

I will remember this quote and your user name. In 2 months from now when the Fuku story is no longer a story, the next time I see you post on ZH I will remind you of the alarmist and paranoid statement that you made. If you are new to this site and its ideas it is understandable that the information can get overwhelming at first. I've been a doomer for 5 years now so I get used to these "shocking" events. Absent a new world war or a modern version of the bubonic plague, there will be no epic clusterfuck of an apocalytpic nightmare.

Challenge accepted.

But I insist you retain my quote in it's entirety:

I also take exception with your implication that this is somehow not an epic clusterfuck of an apocalytpic nightmare just because planet Earth, herself, will probably still be inhabitable on the majority of her surface.

I am new here, but this ain't my first rodeo, Mr. JD. Your pick of that bit out of its original context seems to imply that is what you might believe.

On a hunch from the Missus I tested some fresh store-bought apples with my trusty CDV700, and they were measureably hot around the top of the stem. Looks like the depressed area around the stem is a good catch point for whatever is airborne. By measureable I mean maybe 35-40 CPM, or around .1mR on the meter. Washing them brought the level down to background, which is maybe 12 CPM. Wash your fruits and veggies, folks.

Its already here in the USA folks. Why do you think the gov is not letting the radiation readings out to the public? Small dose now but wait until months upon months of it. They are just trying to keep a lid on the panic like Japan.

rampant apathy and stupidity...

The power of having surrendered is that it's now our duty to escape. Being compliant in the face of the enemy may appear to be apathetic, but the tunnels continue to be dug. Continue to speak up and fight the good fight. Sure, "on a long enough timeline...", but truth will endure, and better to have been on its' side than the alternative.

As for destiny, a personal one is all that matters in the final analysis, imho. From a biblical perspective, it's 70-80 orbits then the great white throne and unapproachable light. In addition, the Creator promised day and night, seed time and harvest will not fail until then.

Peace through preparation. And try not to become too despondent for having taken the red pill.

Some clarification:

A quote from the article:

"And far more importantly, on the plutonium and its 87 year half life"

This is a reference to Pu-238 which was not in great quantiy in reactor number #3 that blew up.

Actually Plutonium Pu-239 was contained in great quantity in reactor number #3 and has a half life of 24,100 years. Pu-240 has a half life of 6563 years

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plutonium

The plutonium isotopic composition of used MOX fuel at 45 GWd/tU burnup is about:
37% Pu-239,
32% Pu-240,
16% Pu-241,
12% Pu-242 and
4% Pu-238.

there are numerous reasons why this whole affair has gone on for as long as it had.

In a nutshell the DPJ has undergone a process of intense infighting, while at the same time the LDP has blocked legislation in Parliament then sought to point fingers at Mr Kan for not "doing something".

This dovetails nicely with the criminal behavior of TEPCO whose laundry list of felonies and other mis deeds which leads us to the state of affairs in June.

I fully expect to see very little of anything done until either Mr Kan calls snap elections or the LDP can gain more seats in the next election cycle when the govt will go back to doing nothing beyond more QE and claims that Japan is special and we should "do our best".

Meanwhile tourism has dropped to zero, and foreigners have left in droves. This summer looks to be a real cooker despite efforts to "cool biz" and the staggering of work hours/days.

Expect the news to get much worse before anything of substance is done.

Fucked-up

Fukushima

I believe now more in emergence than in any conspiracy theories.  Look at Chernobyl.  USSR went almost broke to contain it.

It took them time to decide what to do.  The nerdy nuclear specialists could not bring forth any solution.

The idiots built a state of the art machine that was capable of biting their asses off and decided to ignore that danger.

The operators doing the tests that night had the same problem.

What conspiracy?  The only conspiracy I see is that humankind is about to enter the Mad Max Era.
