Is Japan Selling Radioactive Tea?

George Washington's picture

Washington’s Blog

NHK notes:

Radioactive
cesium exceeding the legal limit was detected in tea made in a factory
in Shizuoka City, more than 300 kilometers away from the Fukushima
Daiichi nuclear power plant. Shizuoka Prefecture is one of the most
famous tea producing areas in Japan.

A tea distributor in Tokyo
reported to the prefecture that it detected high levels of
radioactivity in the tea shipped from the city. The prefectural
government confirmed the contamination on Thursday, detecting 679
becquerels per kilogram of radioactive cesium. The legal limit is 500
becquerels.

The prefecture ordered the factory to refrain from shipping out the product.

After
the accident at the Fukushima nuclear power plant, radioactive
contamination of tea leaves and processed tea has been found over a wide
area around Tokyo.

But the Japan Times reports today:

Shizuoka
Prefecture told a Tokyo-based mail order company not to say anything on
its website about excessive radioactive material being found in tea
from the prefecture, the retailer said Friday.

After Radishbo-ya
Co. made an inquiry to the Shizuoka Prefectural Government about the
matter Monday, a prefectural official told the company not to disclose
the finding due to fears the message would cause unwarranted harm to
Shizuoka tea growers, adding that the prefecture would confirm the
finding on its own, according to the retailer.

Radishbo-ya, for
its part, sent purchasers of the tea letters informing them about the
radiation and offered to recall the products.

Shizuoka is a famous tea production area.

As Alexander Higgins notes, it is 300 miles by car from Fukushima to Shizuoka:

Radioactive Tea Above Legal Limit Found 300 Miles From Fukushima

Of
course, human nature is to try to cover things up, and with Japan's
economy in a tough place, the temptation is even higher. So even if
Shizuoka is now (after-the-fact), admitting radiation problems, many
other districts might not ... at least not in a timely fashion.

It
would be nice to assume that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, EPA
or other agencies are screening imports for radiation.

But given that the FDA previously assured everyone that Japanese fish were safe, that government agencies have largely stopped testing for airborne radiation, and that our agencies are not even really testing seafood in the Gulf for pollution, I am not so hopeful.

French TV says air radiation levels is now normal in Fuk U. There is NO mention of ground level radiation. All we hear is that French company Areva will be participating in the "big" current problem which is to evacuate and treat 100 000 tons of radio active water accumulated. There is NO mention of how the nuclear plant will operate after this mega water removal. By all estimates here it will continue to generate MORE radiated water for months/years as those rods pools will still be there and on heat, for duration unlimited. (Correct me if I am wrong on this).

AS FOR GROUND RADIATION FROM THREE REACTOR MELT DOWNS WHICH HAVE BEEN OFFICIALLY CONFIRMED IN US PRESS, AS HERE ON ZH, NOT A WORD!

Can you believe this on the prime time news this evening on channel 2 the public tv channel?!

This is the country that has a vested interest in nuclear that is second to none in the world! Could this be a reason for this incredible black out?

Its a bit like saying "what DSK problem?" on french tv...fortunately that is not the case.He is a lost cause even for his own party in France....But Fuk U shit and Areva....now there...its total black out!

Closer to home. Click event description.

It is publicly unknown how many of over 1700 treated May 22 Missouri tornado victims now suffer the wrath of a rapid, aggressive fungal infection in their wounds that is causing nerve damage, blindness, brain and lung blood clots and death, but Thursday, health officials issued a staff warning about the killer fungus now that at least nine people have been treated and three or four died due to it. Dr. Uwe Schmidt, an infectious disease specialist at Freeman Health System, said three or four people with the infection called zygomycosis have died reported the News Leader. Although medical staff knew that the killer fungus was causing serious complications the week after the tornadoes, the situation was kept under cover until Thursday. Still, a close approximation of the number of people infected with the deadly fungus is not being revealed. In the deadly tornado aftermath that destroyed Joplin, Missouri's St. John Hospital, Freeman Hospital doctors treated over 1,700 patients while St. John Hospital doctors treated patients in emergency makeshift facilities at Memorial Hall and McAuley Catholic High School.

The Zygomycosis fungus invades underlying tissue - the underlying blood vessels, and cuts off circulation to the skin causing the area to become black according to Dr. Schmidt who says it is "very invasive." Head wounds are the most lethal, while the fungus remaining in an arm or leg have required amputation to save the patient according to Tornado victims wounded near the head have died. As soon as brain tissue started dying, it was too late to save the patient" according to the Leader. The real number of victims with the deadly fungus is unknown as the "report of numbers of cases of reportable diseases are handled by public health departments," according to Cora Scott, a spokeswoman for St. John's Hospital in Springfield, who has been referring all questions to Springfield-Greene County Health Department. Only a week after the tornado, three fungal infection patients were admitted to Freeman Hospital and doctors tried controlling the fungus with intravenous medicine and by removing killed tissues. Dr. Schmidt said that he and other medical staff could see mold in the wounds. "It rapidly spread. The tissue dies off and becomes black. It doesn't have any circulation. It has to be removed."

Hmmm. Well done for pointing out this totally idiotic article in Washington's blog.

That was a tough article to look at GW, i was beginning to like your work on the nuclear danger, but man...  you need to get a medic friend to check on this stuff before you publish it.

The timelines are totally out.  Any infant in the U.S. could not have been exposed to any hot particle from Fukushima for more than 2 days out of the 28 days in the period mentioned.

Babies are actually pretty tough and they don't just keel over.

it could as easily been a big obstetricians convention where they all went to vegas and the birthing units were left short.

The blip was a blip in a small population.  They happen.

I forwarded that to a few scientist friends when I saw it the first time last week. They were unable to find verification for many of her claims. Can anyone verify if 1,000,000 actiually died from Chernobyl, for eg? (Not denying, just a natural sceptic who like proof.)

NHK tv ran a devastating documentary this evening on the government and TEPCO's actions in the days after the tsunami. First rate stuff. Tepco's miserable boss, Shimizu actually called the PM's office and said he was going to abandon the facility!!! The PM went to TEPCO's HQ and said 'like hell you are'. Hopefully NHK will make the hour long program available on its web site or repeat it this evening.

"I look at it this way... For centuries now, man has done everything he can to destroy, defile, and interfere with nature: clear-cutting forests, strip-mining mountains, poisoning the atmosphere, over-fishing the oceans, polluting the rivers and lakes, destroying wetlands and aquifers... so when nature strikes back, and smacks him on the head and kicks him in the nuts, I enjoy that. I have absolutely no sympathy for human beings whatsoever. None. And no matter what kind of problem humans are facing, whether it's natural or man-made, I always hope it gets worse."

I wonder.  Will this terrible incident end the Japanese "fascination" with radiation?  Ever since WW2 there have been endless stories like Godzilla that feature mutation by radiation and other indications of this tendency.  Surely we can all understand this tendency given what happened to them in WW2 thanks to people in the governments of the USSA and Japan.

Maybe [and hopefully] this will close that chapter.  Now they've gone from getting nuked by politicians in the USSA to getting nuked by politicians in Japan.  Both are consequences of the same phenomenon, namely "predators DBA government".

We hope everyone in the world and especially Japan (except politicians and people who controlled nuclear approval and regulatory agencies) suffers no consequences of this disaster.  Unfortunately, our hopes will not prevail.

They're done for: Betrayed, beaten, and now lost. I feel so sorry about that country. Big fan of their culture.

They should've gone all focussed and should've evacuated. To expect that normalcy bias would fool the markets, or would provide a sustainable floor for future economic growth is so typical of the current "management" everywhere, and soooo doomed to fail.

Don't put the japs in the same boat as muslims or africans.

When their country dies they go to.  If the unlikely scenario above came to pass the numbers would be lower than you expect.

The first island to be  taken close to the japanese mainland in WW2 had 80% of the entire population dug in ready for suicide missions.  Dug in little pits all over the island , every 20 metres a peasant  with an axe jumping out at you.. constantly until they were all dead.

The loss estimates from that made the decision to drop the nukes easier... and if Russia sees them in action so much the better.

The japs are hardcore.
