Japanese Metropolitan Radiation Readings Spike Once Again, As Wind Turns Toward Land

Tyler Durden's picture

One of the Fukushima fallout's saving graces so far has been that the winds over Japan had traditionally been blowing radiation out to sea and away from major cities. Alas, as the meteorological office indicates, this is no longer the case and border breezes are now tugging each and every way, with the result being a lot of the radiation already accumulated east over the Pacific coming back with a vengeance. Unfortunately, the latest SPEEDI readings, indicate that the expected jump in gamma radiation has indeed been confirmed with reading every ten minutes over Ibaraki surging from mid triple digits over the past several days, to nearly 3000 nGy/h. While in the grand scheme of things this is still not a material threshold reading, it does confirm that the NPP continues to leak a dangerous amount of radiation, and the only key variable is the wind direction. Should winds continue to blow from the sea, it is only a matter of time before more and more Tokyo residents ask themselves if it is worth finding out if the government is lying about this latest data figure.

From SPEEDI, the latest print out:

A continuously updated spreadsheet of radiation counts over all prefectures - link.

And the latest windmap:

The incoming power doesn't mean shit if the hydraulic lines are fucked up and the switch gear is blown out.  It's not like they just need to reset the clocks and go on with life.

I can't even imagine the cooling systems will even function when the electrical supply is restored.  But, shit, I generally agree that it's worth the <1% chance.

Copy that.  For the unitiatied, think about how you jump start your car.  If you lose your battery, you need either a comparable battery or another car.  If a power plant has "black start" capabilities, it doesn't need power from the power grid to restart, but it does not an on-site generator with sufficient capacity.  Most power plants don't have "black start" capabilities.

not exactly...the fallout in the driveway probably won't dose you (unless you are really close to the source), but the shit on your clothing will.

The problem is when you get high readings...which direction do you run?  Have to have knowledge of the recent prevailing wind patterns and go perpendicular.  But, if the shit is hot enough, you will take a lethal dose getting to safety.

The potential of radioactive or lethal chemical fallout is potentially intractable for people with bugout ranches downwind of an incident.  Given the distribution of nuclear power, coal plants, and other industrial facilities, there's really nowhere that isn't downwind of something.  And, once that shit gets into your soil, your ranch/farm/animals/everything is in a state of area denial.

Anyone concerned with dealing with a personal radiological incident would have to be prepared to stay indoors with a taped up house for the amount of time it takes the Cs137 and Sr90 isotopes to cool off enough to make moving feasible.  Then you have to drive out with whatever you can carry, don't run the AC, seal up the car, etc., and take a complete wash and abandon anything that has exposure.

Even years later, kidofspeed (I read that blog 5 years ago) made sure to drive down only the middle of the road, don't tread off of worn paths, under no circumstances ever enter any building or walk into any yard, and have to suffer a strip wash in and out of the exclusion zone.  And this was a decade after the incident.  Don't disturb any dust.

How about someone fire up a HARP and heat up the atmosphere to change the wind direction to Westerly?  Anyone see the vid Richard Hoagland posted years ago about atmospheric heating and steering Katrina to NO?

If they can steer a huricane, they can draw air from the Japanese mainland out to sea.

Speaking of HARP, did anyone see the Alaskan HARP magnetometer readings from 3-11 that George Ure posted on Wed. 3-16?  "...seems to conclusively demonstrate that not all earthquakes are created equal at least in terms of magnetometer readings in Gakona, Alaska..."

FFS, why do I need to have to have this stupid conversation again?

Well, according to the patents listed in "Angels don't play this HAARP", it is likely the military uses the Alaskan ionospheric heater to detect missile launches, and other less obvious military uses, but the rest of the poorly written, frequently repeating book attempts - desperately - to link this up to conspiracy theories. To say the attempted gap is bridged is more than a stretch.

HAARP used to cause earthquakes and/or weather patterns thousands of miles away? Fucking bollocks, in my book, and there is zero credible evidence suggesting otherwise. Performing "cloud generation" in a cylinder a quadrillionth the size of our atmosphere is not conclusive evidence that HAARP will function over this space.

Fuck this shit, I'm off to bed.

Yeah, and let's not even get into that Large Hadron Collider thing. I mean, who really cares if the Earth is destroyed due to the formation of Higgs-Boson singularities at the planet's core? I mean, seriously, that isn't likely to occur for another 50 to 100 years, and I will likely not be alive then, so maybe I shouldn't concern myself with the future at all.

"The Large Hadron Collider is the biggest magnetic field on Earth after its center. Earthquakes are caused by changes in the magnetic field of the Earth. Since the machine switched on in 2010, there has been a significant -100% increase on Earthquakes from the statistical mean of 13 plus 7, to 21 in 2010 and this year mean of 25 ."

Some interesting data extraced from this ...

"TEPCO evaluated core damage of Unit 2 was less than 5% (22:14 March 14th)"

"A sound of explosion was made in Unit 2. As the pressure in Suppression Chamber decreased (06:10 March 15th), there was a possibility that an incident occurred in the Supression Chamber. (06:20 March 15th)"

"Injection of seawater for Unit 1 and Unit 3 to the Primary Containment Vessel (PCV) was interrupted due to the lack of seawater in pit. (01:10 March 14th)"
"For Unit 3 injection of seawater into PCV was restarted (03:20 March 14th)"

-----end

Looking at the tables (Page 2) - No data for Supression Pool Water Temperature for all 6 reactors.
Looking at the tables (Page 2) - No data for Supression Pool Pressure for #2 & #3.

As suspected by many here, this data confirms to me the Supression Pools for #2 & #3 are compromised. They have no pressure, and are leaking. Going forward, cores #2 & #3 cannot be cooled using their Supression Pools!

I have always felt there was a chance they would get the reactors under control, assuming the containment was not breached. The spent fuel pools can also be brought under control if the structure of the pools will hold water. If that structure is breached, then that becomes problematic. If they can use spraying to get the heat and radiation attenuated, they might be able to get in there and do some kind of temporary fix, if it is a structural problem that can be fixed, and get water in the pool. If it is a total rubble-style breakdown of the pool structure, then I am not sure what the hell you do. If the rods bundles are not intact and rods are scattered, then maybe the only option is some type of entombment. The spraying seems to have been what has kept them under control so far (the spent fuel pools), but is not, of course, a permanent solution. Of course, everything I and anyone else says is based on imperfect information, and even that assumes the truth is being told to us. I do know that readings of radiation types, levels and radionuclide characteristics can tell you pretty accurately what is going on in those reactors. The problem with that is that unless you can get into the buildings to detect short half-life radionuclide's, then you are working off incomplete data.

See, for those trying to understand, this kind of post is from someone who knows the topic trying to move beyond news items and information to synthesize what it means and the implications.  As Aristarchan has been skeptical of the entombment option, it's significant that the condition of the pools might make it necessary....while I have been saying it needs to happen from much earlier, due to the complexity of the systems and the dangers posed by thinking other options will work (time wasted, more damage in the meantime, radiation continuing to escape, workers lost).

That last video was very sobering.  I was surprised at how bad unit 2 looked up close.  I do now think, however, that unit 3's pool is still up on the floor where it's supposed to be.  But you can see steam/vapor coming out from deeper in the rubble, and if that's not spent fuel.....

Sun, 03/20/2011 - 23:47 | 1080575 Aristarchan
Aristarchan's picture

Initially, I was more worried about the cores, until the hydrogen explosions, even then, I knew that hydrogen is very brissant when it explodes, but I felt the  pressure release of the top part of the building blowing off might have saved the thick structure of the pools. Now I am not so sure, and of course, the condition in each reactor is almost certainly different. I was initially sceptical about entombment, since I felt there was a chance they might be able to kill the radioactive sources. But if you have to entomb one of them, I am not sure it is possible not to entomb all of them (1-4), since they are so close together. I do think the Japanese are planning entombment as an option, but I think they realize that if you can get some control that allows you to get close, you can do a much more permanent job than just dumping stuff on them from helicopters.

And here comes China...and Thorium (Have I mentioned Thorium before?)

Safe nuclear does exist, and China is leading the way with thorium

A few weeks before the tsunami struck Fukushima’s uranium reactors and shattered public faith in nuclear power, China revealed that it was launching a rival technology to build a safer, cleaner, and ultimately cheaper network of reactors based on thorium.

This passed unnoticed –except by a small of band of thorium enthusiasts – but it may mark the passage of strategic leadership in energy policy from an inert and status-quo West to a rising technological power willing to break the mould.

If China’s dash for thorium power succeeds, it will vastly alter the global energy landscape and may avert a calamitous conflict over resources as Asia’s industrial revolutions clash head-on with the West’s entrenched consumption.

just reported, knocked crosses down on this:

TOKYO (Dow Jones)--Fukushima Prefecture will continue to test tap water after more than three times a guideline level of radiation was found in water at a village in the prefecture.
A health ministry official confirmed an earlier report that more than three times the recommended maximum intake of iodine was found in water at Itatemura in the prefecture, and that residents had been told not to drink water there as a precaution. The level detected Sunday was 965 becquerels compared with a benchmark limit of 300 becquerels.
"The key point is that this amount does not present an immediate health risk," a ministry official said Monday.
But the official added that the water would be potentially harmful to health if drunk over an extended period.
Itatemura is the eighth location in the prefecture to have its water tested. The previous seven sites all produced results within benchmark levels.

Both Japan and the United States have terminology to represent "Someone is reviewing the radiation data before it's fit for public consumption" - can anyone demystify the who or what these people are doing?  What are they analyzing before going to print?  Is the equipment so unreliable that it requires human interpretation?  I don't make radiation gear, but I bet someone reading this does.

In Japan - it's called "under survey":

example: http://bit.ly/fbR2e2

In the USA - it's called "undergoing quality review":

example: https://cdxnode64.epa.gov/radnet-public/showMap.do

All conspiracy aside, what are they doing?  Why can't the raw data be released?  I saw something on MSM that said the sensors are so sensitive that anyone who is undergoing chemotherapy can be detected as they walk by.  Is that part of the survey work?  Making sure nobody didn't just get out of radiation treatment before it goes to print?

I'm pleased to see that both Japan and the US have made an effort to get the data to the public, but some of the gaps just seem odd.

For all we know, Fukushima = Devils Tower 2.0.  No wonder there isn't any streaming video from that facility.  Only the people who built towers out of mashed potatoes and threw shrubbery into the kitchen really know what's happening right now...

Jim in MN's picture

The US stuff is behind because they archive the data and then do an automated screen for anything odd; filters in the software allow for seasonal and daily changes (like the sun being up) to be ignored.

Then the real lag is protocol, humans have to actually look at it.  Or at least have it on their desks, pretend to look at it and send it someplace else.  With air quality data the states generally have someone look at it too.  So EPA HQ, EPA regional office, state agencies at a minimum.  For emissions data (stack pollution) the facility owners get to review and contest.  All this passing back and forth takes anywhere from a few months to a year and a half depending on the specific data.  Keep in mind that this kind of data can lead to lawsuits or press questions, and these are often simply over permit violations, which may or may not be 'mere technicalities'.  Real time posting of data, which of course is provisional pending all this review, depends on the history of a particular monitoring program but is certainly an option.

In Japan, it looks like they are holding some back because it's too alarming and  they'd rather get it right (perhaps have another sensor, or wait to see averages and patterns) than keep people fully informed at the risk of being wrong.  BUt I can't speak to that personally.

Thanks, it's good to see that we have the equivilant of Sarbanes-Oxley bureaucracy between radiation readings and public publication.  All radiological kidding aside, it does look like they are publishing some monitoring site data on the EPA website quickly, almost near realtime.   I wonder what the test is for route A (to print) or route B (to the EPA cloud).  I realize they just started this Friday.

It ain't over till it's over. SkyNews seems to give the situation a little more seriousness than the corporate US media talking heads.

http://www.skynews.com.au/topstories/article.aspx?id=591412&vId

Authorities are much more concerned about reactors No. 2 and No. 3 and the spent fuel pool at No. 4. The reactor containment vessel at No. 2 may be cracked and venting some radioactive gases into the environment. Reactor No. 3 is the only reactor at the site that contains plutonium in the fuel rods and its escape would be extremely dangerous because it is carcinogenic in even minute doses.

And the spent fuel pool at reactor building No. 4 is thought to have boiled dry, allowing the fuel rods to heat up and become damaged, also releasing radioactivity into the environment.

SINGAPORE (Dow Jones)--Japanese Deputy Vice Minister of Finance For International Affairs Naoko Ishii said Monday that sentiment has been hurt by the leakage of radiation from nuclear reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi plant and that the poor sentiment could have consequences on the economy.
She also said that it was premature to say anything definitive about the impact of the earthquake, but said that financial markets weren't disrupted and that clearing systems were operating.
Ishii is in Singapore to attend a World Bank conference.
"There may be some impression in the international community that Japan is melting down...our financial markets and infrastructure have been functioning without disruption," Ishii said.
"The overall impact of the quake may not be as large as imagined."
