Japanese Prime Minister To Step Down

Tyler Durden's picture

From Bloomberg:

Ichiro Ozawa, secretary-general of
Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama’s party, asked Hatoyama
to step down from his post, Yukio Ubukata, vice secretary-
general of the party said in a TV Asahi program today. Ubukata
said he expects both to resign before an upper house election
next month. Hatoyama refused to resign during a meeting of
senior party officials yesterday, Kyodo News reported.

As this action will likely lead to Yen weakness, and thus Euro strength, the most likely result will be a green close for the Nikkei, once again indicating that politically destabilizing fundamentals don't matter to C++.

Do they see the mother-of-all economic s**tstorms about to break? Are these resignations just so they can say "It wasn't on my watch."... a vain attempt to preserve political viability for when (if) the storm ends?

Well, the German president is not a "world leader".  When PM Merkel goes, we got something.  Still, the Japanese PM is a big deal and there are lots of changes occurring rapidly.

if one was a conspiracy theorist, one might theorize that the US staged/allowed the NK ship sinking in order to scare the japanese into letting us keep our base in okinowa.  the PM ran on the platform of removing the base.  he caved, and now must resign.  don't cross uncle sam!

i reccomend the book nemisis by chalmers johnson regarding the decades of conflict over the base.  amazing book on many levels, esp. in re imperial overreach.

Well, the fact is the recently voted in Japanese leader has shamed himself and, as an extension, his own country and people who trusted him. So it does not surprise me that those around him want to leave his side. Dishonor lasts a lifetime in Asian culture. American leaders, both in politics and financial, could learn quite a bit from this.

This shame is not financial, it is that the new leader ran on various platforms and promises, one of which he broke was the removal of the American base within Japan. The Japanese people are tired of Americans raping women and the elevated crime rate near the USA military base.

What a happy coincidence!  A lot of the american people are sick and tired of the U.S. military maintaining more bases than necessary.

Agreed, yet tell that to the leaders and see what actions are taken. When the rubber meets the road, the politicians do what they do despite any campaign promises or the desires of their people.

The country is divided into two kinds of people:

1) the people in a politician's district where a base is located (or in a contributor's) who vote for him,

2) the people outside his district who gain nothing by his candidacy, cannot vote for him, and in fact lose money and power by him winning.

(See: Murtha, Kennedy, Byrd, McConnell, Frank, Dodd ad nauseum)

That is the fatal flaw in Republican government.  And why it ultimately fails, epically.

It's gonna take hours for consultants to explain this to Rahm and Barack.

"But-but . . he was the prime minister!"

"Yes, Mr. President.  But it didn't mean anything without honor."

"5hit like this doesn't happen in Chicago!"

"No, Mr. Emmanuel."

"You don't just give up something like that without getting something back!  I mean, what the fvck!  What'd he get in return?!  There had to be SOMEthing, not just this . . honor stuff, whatever that is!"

"I think I saw it on the teleprompter once, Rahm."

"Well, you're not gonna see it again, and that means you'll never say it!  We're not giving this 5hit up for anything, least of all some . . what'd you call it, professor?"

"A-a personal code of behavior demanding honest and forthright behavior even when repercussions for misbehavior would not follow."

"Yeah, that's the 5hit I'm talking about!  I'll have Axe or Plouffe write a program to exclude that word from the teleprompters.  It ain't on them, it aint in this administration!"

The clueless Japanese public actually believe they will be allowed to escape from the US orbit. They have never been shown all the agreements the US and Japanese governments have signed. The elite who really rule Japan are kept in power by the US. The politicians are puppets just like here. If this guy had not relented he would have suffered a "heart attack" like numerous prior prime ministers.

The USA pushes the threat of Russia, China and NK to Japan. This will not fly for long since China is now the largest trading partner of Japan as well as the Taiwanese. Japan and Taiwan will be begging for Chinese "investment" when their aging demographics wipe out their wealth and the US is blocking access to critical resources.

The colonial relationship between Japan and US is clear and simple: Japan exports capital and high-value-added goods to US while US exports debt and raw materials to Japan, Japan buys US debt while US protects Japan's commodity routes, Japan provides high-tech components while US provides lo-tech assembly plants and marketing support. The colonial relationship between Japan and US is evidently similar to the relationship between UK and Australia in 19th and 20th century: Australia exported raw wool to UK while UK exported textiles, UK exported capital while Australia provided protection for trade routes and colonies (Gallipoli, Transvaal). US is not only not "blocking access to critical resources" but rather guaranteeing access with US soldiers.

After WWII, Japan has been a US colony. Plain and simple. One visit (and I've done many) will tell you that in an instant.

Surreal nation. The rest of the world's Iceland, waiting to ex/im-plode. (pun in ten did).

Think about it, one of the last PM's was "loved" because he was a huge Manga fan.

Save spending tie there, everything you've been taught to believe about Japan is probably false. Plus, the US has been force-feeding them beef (read My Year In Meats) for 70 years now. Scary. Men are not men there anymore and neither are the women women. It is all one huge fantasy land.

The land of the rising sun is going to go dark soon.

Scary.

Their pacifism is a lie. They have supremacist DNA. Think they are better than the world. And they love to punish and be punished (remember Nanking?).

All Kabuki for the last century, american influenced Kabuki since 1945...

Now Kabooomi!

Sayonara indeed.

By the way, will a sinking yen help or hurt the Yen carry unwind? It's all relative now, I guess. I'm your uncle!

I didn't know about Nanking, but after reading the wiki I do now know what you are talking about. In war there are, by definition, countless acts of violence that are awful (which is why they are best avoided, for everyones sake). It seems to me that in war, the Japanese are at least as vicious as anyone else, perhaps more so.

Are you a congressional staffer?

Do tell. you went on wiki and came up with that gem of an epiphany in contribution?

Try not to squeeze so hard.  I would recommend a 'book', indeed, books.

In addition, I would highly recommend traveling, some introspection and perhaps even killing something; and I mean really do it, tap into it, even a bug.  You may have to do this more than once.

Maybe then you can lecture on 'acts of violence' and enlighten everyone on the nature of human behavior 'in war' (and by all means, how 'for everyones sake' (sic) war is 'best avoided') and those 'vicious' slant-eyed savage Japs.

Er, ok. One at a time then.

1. No, not a congressional staffer. You knew that already.

2. I am aware of books.

3. I have travelled. I have killed things, repeatedly. Can't say I like it.

4. It wasn't a lecture, it was a comment.

So... do you actually disagree with what I've said? Or just feel like putting me down?

More fallout from the ever reaching tentacles clawing away at nations by the US EMPIRE.

Empire is killing the US, and it's taking down half the world (economically and militarily) along with it.

Wed, 06/02/2010 - 08:46 | 389059 Anarchist

Few Empires have gone down without a whimper. The "Empire" is not just one country. It includes the US, England and Western Europe. The goal of all countries in the "Empire" is to cause chaos in the remains of the Soviet block and limit growth of the developing world. You will see many insurgencies funded by the west pop up in South America, Africa, Asia, China ..etc.  If the west loses control of the worlds resources, it is doomed to decline. The US is goiing to find that having the worlds best Navy did not forstall the decline of past Empires like Spain and England or for that matter Japan.

Nothing on the cause why this guy failed in his endeavour.

Sounds to me strange that a country cannot remove a foreign military base from his territory.

What do you honestly think happened?

Political pressures (mostly from outside) coupled with the (all too timely) Cheonan sinking. I bet some arms were twisted, and some politicians were bribed and/or threatened.

What I find most hilarious is that it once again shows up "modern democracies". The will of the people of Japan cannot even be enforced when they elect a man who promises them what they want and wishes himself to carry it out, and in the end fails. What of democracy now then?

Wed, 06/02/2010 - 12:09 | 389525 AnAnonymous

I dont know what happened. That is why I asked. I am surprised by the lack of how it happened. As no explanation of the how was of no interest.

This does not look like a trivial issue.

Japanese elected this guy on ground he would fulfill their wish to remove a military base.

The base is a US military base. The US is a country who keeps repeating that the outcomes of an election should be respected.

On this ground, the US should have received the message Japanese want to get rid of  the base.

It didnt look like an exaggerated promise, one you know from the start could not be delivered. Japan is a democracy.Japan is on good terms with the US. Japan wanted a US base to be removed.

It is not how being naive or something. But this case looks like a major structural malfunction. Suming up the event to a guy was elected to remove a military base, he failed, he resigned is pretty thin.
