Jobless Benefits Extension Voted Down As Republican Opposition Sinks Latest Attempt For Perpetual Entitlement State
A last minute attempt by Democrats to pass a 90 day extension of jobless benefit just failed to pass in Congress. Before the vote, which only sought a 3 month extension instead of a year long one, Steny Hoyer said: "I think every Democrat will vote for it. I'm hopeful that the Republicans will vote for it." However, since democrats brought the measure up as a "suspension" bill, meaning
that it required the approval of two-thirds of the House to pass, instead of under normal house rules which would have allowedthe vote to pass, the extension failed. Therefore just like the last time this extension failed, look for up to 4-5 million unemployed to fall off EUC and extended claims over the next few months, with a hit of up to 2 million by the first/second week of December. To be sure, there was also a political flavor: as NBC reports "But with suspension bill now coming to the floor on the last day of
votes before the Thanksgiving vacation, the vote will give House
Democrats the opportunity to argue that the GOP blocked unemployment
benefits for the jobless during the holiday season."
From the Associated Press:
Republicans in the House have blocked a bill that would have extended jobless benefits for the long-term unemployed beyond the holiday season.
The most recent extension of jobless benefits expires Dec. 1. Two million people will lose benefits averaging $310 a week nationwide by the end of the year.
The measure would have extended jobless benefits through the end of February at a cost of adding $12.5 billion to the nation's debt. Republicans opposing the measure said that the measure should be paid for by cutting unspent money from last year's economic stimulus bill.
Democrats brought the measure to the floor under fast-track rules that required a two-thirds vote to pass, so the measure fell despite winning a majority.
The bottom line is that billions in disposable income courtesy of Uncle Scam are about to be taken out of circulation. Now add the possibility that the Bush tax cuts may not be extended, and the economic picture could suddenly be turned upside down.

You're 100% right.
It is the greatest theft in the history of the world. An equity-based currency turned into a usury-based currency. Now, just to use the means of exhcange, we must pay tribute to our masters.
It is long past time to return to equity.
It's called gold.
Benefits loss equals $31 billion per year in lost demand... This loss will grow as more roll off over time. You can pretty much write off a consumer recovery; and go long homeless shelters.
Can you recommend any names to buy? I'm thinking about diversifying out of glue factories and mortuaries a little.

I think you meant to say "could be suddenly returned back to rightside-up."
No matter how you put it, finals sale are phucked big time. But, the only thing worse than not extending them would have ben extending them.
kinda sums up how far we have screwed things up. We are damned if we do and damned if we don't. There is no way out of this without significant pain but no one wants to face that.
Moral Hazard is morphing into Survival Hazard!
This vote will serve to improve the UE numbers.
Exactly! As I said above, the irony of it is the illusion that unemployment will be falling. Sad day. But I do believe they will reverse this with some emergency package as pat above noted.
Yes indeed unemployment's "fall" will be misleading (in the short term) - however I guaran-damn-tee you that employment (not a misleading stat) will also rise after a few months due to this.
You watch.
http://research.stlouisfed.org/fred2/series/CE16OV
yes because people will start taking jobs that were previously "beneath them". isn't there a study that showed most people get a job within the last 2 weeks of their unemployment checks ending?
And thus the buying power of the American citizen erodes, one crappy job at a time. Say buh-bye to your consumer-inspired US economy of the last 20 years.
There is no way to win this one. There is simply no way out. We're done for, as a nation.
If there is, then link to it.
Here's a hint for your tiny brain to ponder...

And don't forget the people who are working jobs "beneath them"...

It may make you feel better to think less of your fellow Americans, but there's very little truth in the homilies with which you salve your apparent headwounds.
put a few rocks in that snowball i take it. i am speaking from personal experience. if you have personal experiences which contradict mine then i welcome them. those 10,000 people applying at Toyota for jobs, did they also apply at their local McDonalds? are they mad that there are no more handouts or no jobs? i expect them to voice their opinion, just as you and i have both done.
are you okay with your taxpayer money supporting people who are gaming the system? i am not. i am in support of people who are being honest and trying to find a job.
The simple truth is that 'gaming the system' for $60/day is not something any sane person would do if they could find even a minimum wage job.
Search google for "thousands apply" you'll find many articles from around the country with the same refrain: thousands apply for < hundreds of available positions.
I'm sure the people who would work at Toyota have also applied for every position they can find. Exactly how many positons do you think there are at their local Mickey D's dufus?
There simply aren't enough jobs for the number of people who need jobs...you're faulting people for finding no game in an empty field because it's easier than accepting that they aren't completely to blame for their current circumstances because it makes you feel better about your sociopathy.
They aren't "mad there aren't any more 'handouts'" (as if unemployment INSURANCE can be called that).
They are frustrated because they want to work and support their families and are not being allowed to do so by the economy.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIlIL5pPFmY
The simple truth is that 'gaming the system' for $60/day is not something any sane person would do if they could find even a minimum wage job.
Well I guess we agree to disagree. I have personal knowledge of several people milking the system because they would make the same money off minimum wage jobs. I have zero knowledge of someone trading down to minimum wage jobs because they "want to work and support their families".
Simple math. $8/hr x 40hrs week = $320/wk. Average unemployment benefits $310/wk.
That's one hell of an incentive to stay home and do what you want until benefits end, or put a half-hearted effort into looking for jobs, or only pay attention to jobs that met your previous employment standards.
The reality is that both people exist, those of whom i speak and those of whom you speak. Attacking me personally is of no use and in poor taste. What are your proposals for fixing the situation?
Kudos for using "dufus" and "sociopathy" in the same passage though :)
40hr/week min wage job? Are you fucking kidding?! There are fewer of these than truthful politicians in DC.
Try 23 * 7.25 == $166/week before taxes...and UI benefits for someone who was making min wage before they were laid off won't be anywhere near that average.
My proposals:
- Negative Fed reserve rates for the TBTF banks.
- A stimulus directed squarely at the SBA to encourage small biz formation (some was included in the stim-u-less, but not nearly enough).
- Elimination of corporate tax loopholes and no more freely expatriated cash (bring our globalized jobs back).
- Publicly funded elections and strict term limits. Bust up the duoligarchy.
- Jack up cap gains taxes to pre-Clinton levels...zero trading losses? Awesome: pay up. Same for hedge manager compensation.
Of course attacking you personally is of use...to me...ZH is fight club: you should be thankful.
It's about time.
Time to get off the couch apply at McDonalds and do some work.
If you go on craigslist there are jobs in every area in the United States. I'm sick of these cry babies.
It's not that they cant find a job...its that they can't find a job that they like. That shit is o.v.e.r.
No open jobs? Give me an area and I'll find a job for you to apply at.
(*TWO THUMBS UP*)
You're a fucking moron. There are quite literally millions of people making due with jobs that don't cover their basic needs right now.
It's not about finding a job to apply for, it's about being the 1 in 100 who actually gets one.
When I can name an area and you can find a job that any unemployed person can actually get, then you'll have a high-horse to stand on. Until then, you're just a big ego with microcephaly.
(full disclosure: I have a job and have since 1986...but then I also have an advanced degree)
"Two million people will lose benefits averaging $310 a week nationwide by the end of the year."
Soooo . . . billions in bonuses for bankers but 300 a week for their victims is out of the question.
Hmm. Billions in bonuses for bankers. Billions in bonuses for bankers. Billions in bonuses for bankers. Say it everybody, it's fun!
I'm with you. The austerity folks are playing INTO the private cartels hands. They don't see it that way, but they are. If they saw it that way, the cartel wouldn't be so clever.
The ONLY way you can advocate austerity is by APPLYING IT FIRST TO PRIVATE CARTEL BANKING.
If you're not and just "taking what you can get", it's their hand you're playing into and they will roll up even MORE ASSETS pledged as collateral on illegal, fiat currency loans that didn't have the legal reserves backing them.
That = free assets for banks.
wake up people.
If you don't do this in the right order, you'll be doing the "right things" but it will serve THEIR order and domination of your country.
i want the banker bonuses and unemployment extension beyond 2 years stopped. i don't care in what order it occurs, just so long as it happens. maybe when we stop pretending there is no problem by keeping unemployment going forever we will finally get the revolt that is needed to really change things. nobody making $310 a week for doing nothing is going to revolt.
I can't argue the facts on your revolution formula.
But, the order matters immensely. Also, if you get one "win" and lose the other, your country losses more ground to the fiat private cartel than if you had you lost both your requests.
So, if you want to end the Fed or whatever else, less chance. They will have wound this nation up tightly with all their gains.
Too many people fighting windmills.
Oh it'll get much better then that.. What will happen is that some bankers WILL get a bonus. Then they'll get laid off and collect 99+ weeks of unemployment..
Double-dippin' bitchez!

Not a Ritholz fan per se, but I have to give a loud "bravo" for saying what needs to be said.
IMO, you are missing the obvious. The fed and primary dealers can simply stop lending the gov FRN's and force them to pay up. Just like they did in 1913 and 1933. If they wanted the parking meters, roads and bridges (as you've said), they could simply demand that in the settlement of an impossible to pay debt.
So austerity won't get them anything they can't get right now. At least with austerity the damage can be limited and reduced over time. The absolute worst thing that can happen is the debt keeps piling on exponentially, making the eventuall settlement worse and worse. Or it could get so bad that the end is hyperinflation.

Yeehaw! Now I are a rich stockholder -- pass the ceegars!
= vastly improved unemployment numbers! Up has become down now. And bad has become good. Its the new normal.
This is just wrong on so many levels. The tax breaks, stimulus, bailouts and all the trimmings have failed to employ people (as we knew it would). To deny basic unemployment compensation to the tune of a few billion in the face of trillions lost and looted is just inhumane.
Right On !
I understand But....I saw a special last night where people admitted that they have stayed on unemployment turning away job offers. And people onwelfare who refused to look for work because they enjoyed being supported by the government instead of working. And that the social workers encouraged them to stay on welfare roles instead of working.
That goes to Social Worker job security, which is counted as jobs saved, probably.
Yep, thos MSM "specials" sure do an awesome job of blinding people to the truth.
Seriously, think this shit through logically, without the TV on. You'd be suprised what happens.
That's exactly right! Because we all know that unemployment compensation comes from a source other than the taxpayer, and that's why it's not outright theft....oh, wait.....
Do me a frigg'n favor... sell all your assets and open a homeless shelter.

Over 500 job postings in San Diego in the last TWO days.
http://sandiego.craigslist.org/jjj/
Except most of them are for "personal services" right?
No...those are real jobs.
So if you want to get Christmas presents for you family this year than get a job...fuck it, get two jobs.
When I was a kid I had three jobs and never got Christmas presents. I have no sympathy.
My father always told me, "If you want sympathy, look in the dictionary between shit and syphilis".
Be a “Green Team Leader” (San Diego)---------------
Wonder what this job is. Probably growing Hemp !
That job is for a canvaser who goes door-to-door looking for donations for Green peace or another environmental non-profit. It has a base pay that is usaully less than min. wage cause you get commission from the donations. It would be nice if the people who say there are so many jobs to actually look at the job market. But that would require work and may contradict their sentiment. Cant have that, can we?
Damn straight. Far easier to prejudge millions with next to no evidence than actually engage neurons.
Mr. Market either didn't hear about this vote or doesn't care. Interesting.
Mr. Market is currently on vacation with Mr. Pomo and their new mutual friend Mr. Gm.
LOL

Market doesn't care about this. It really affects those that need the extension. They're not buying stocks or discretionary iShit so the market doesn't give a damn.
Mr. Market only wants the blood of your firstborn... second born, you, your unborn children and your ancestors...
And Amerikkka is more than ready to provide! It's a "free" (TM) and capitalist society of course! Not giving Mr. Market what he wants is the ruse of those commies, and Amerikkka sure doesn't want that, right?
Republicans are alienating their base by starving them.
Repliblicans wanted to approve the extension if unused stimulus money was used instead of spending even more billions. I agree.
It's part of their plan for global domination:
1) Starve voters while Dems are in the Whitehouse;
2) Promote rioting where it does not impact Red state voters;
3) Dems hold the bag for starvation, riots, fatalities and death panels (or even just rumors of these) going into election cycle;
4) GOP sweep. Palin iz Prezidents 4 Life.

Why on Earth are people missing the obvious here? When you lose a job, you get unemployment insurance. When that ends, if you don't have a job, you can apply for welfare and food stamps. The social construct is there to support those people who really cannot get a job. The reality is that there are a huge number of people just gaming the system.
That hasn't been true for 14 years. Most people can't qualify for welfare even if they are homeless.
ok, then we need to know why they can't qualify and how that should be fixed. if there is a gap between unemployment and the next safety net, then that needs to be addressed.
Take it up with Newt Gingrich, dumbfuck.
I may be wrong but when you get laid off you collect a portion of what ever you put in.
Many people confuse unemployment with welfare although I don't believe by Erik is.
Nope, you're not wrong: TADA!

Let's see, a $12.5 Billion unemployment extension for US citizens
must be paid for Now ! but a $3 Trillion tax cut is put on the Chinese charge card???
The Elites have now got the Repubs elected and if their intention is to bring austerity for middle/lower class, then watch out. There will be a huge sell off in both dollar and stocks due to capital flight and economy crash.
The country has been looted, Paulson turns up to Congress with one piece of paper demanding about 60x the amount that would be needed to keep these people afloat for a while longer....and it's debated and shot down!
I pay plenty of tax, have worked fulltime since the age of 15, and am not one for entitlements, but this country is a fucking joke to throw the poor under the bus in this way! What a complete joke!
The country is going to get everything that karma is bringing it on a silver platter, with interest. Cast out your fellow man, take away the safety net, and be prepared to eat it.
Preach!
I'm with you on this.
Austerity DOGMA doesn't work when your money = private monopoly, your public debt pays private interest to them, and they make loans on real collateral with fake reserves.
Austrian economics COULD be good, but, in THIS order, Austrian economics serves the private banking cartel perfectly. It will enrich them beyond measure at the expense of the nation. The private cartel is manipulating and commercializing Austrian economics to serve their political purposes. They're actually DIVIDING the "anti-FED" voice into two camps.
Divide and conquer.
Austrian Economics is very useful in diagnosing problems but not necessarily useful in fixing them.
two wrongs don't make a right. welfare is welfare is welfare. taking money from one and giving it to another is never right regardless of if we are giving it to the rich and corrupt or the poor.
false dogma.
If the Japanese bomb a U.S. state, can we raise money from others? This is worse and the enemy is the private currency bank cartel.
As the private cartel tries to roll up assets (you can watch the hearings on TV and see their game), I don't remind reinforcing their enemies, the poor and the middle class with assets they're stealing from with illegal reserve-free loans.
All accomplished by abusing a currency monopoly and IGNORING bank regulations (the law).
These are illegal criminals who have hijacked capitalism. This is a war. Reinforce all on the other side of the banks. No dogma in war. There's only winning, slowing the asset grab or weakening the enemy: Banks.
We need Treasury Labor notes for WORK introduced into the currency system immediately.
"raising money" is not the same as "taking money" with the muzzle of a gun. Check your premises.
It's not welfare if you've paid into it. I've paid for ue and ss, and I better fucking get it!
Most states only pay UE for around 13 weeks, why then, do some feel "entitled" to 99 weeks of it? Consider Social Security a stupidity tax, because that's what it's gonna turn out to be. "Dreams Come Due"

Right, great.
So the state destroyed the economy (I consider Wall St. as part of the state, or the state part of WS?) and unemployment is shockingly high. Benefits will now be cut off. Great.
Maybe these god damn Republicans can grab some cash from the empire? Can the god damn Democrats ask their wealthy masters for a few billion? No, fuck us. Fuck you. Starve pesant. Get a job - and if there are no jobs, kiss my ass.
My junk was number five if your keeping track.
"and unemployment is shockingly high. Benefits will now be cut off. Great."
99 weeks is not enough time?...two million people have been "off work" for 99 weeks, these are who are effected...what would you suggest?...199 weeks?
All that was asked is that the SPENDING be found to CUT in order for the unemployment checks for these two million 99er's to continue...helluva a deal IMHO.
But no...the majority would rather play politics & protect their "special projects" than to make the hard fiscal choices.
You do realize they spent all of this year in DC and still don't have a budget to present to the president don't you?
Zerohedge can be so fucking dumb. They cry socialism and "permanent entitlement" that makes welfare queens who never work but are sustained for ever. Always the same scapegoat, reductionism that hides the truth of the unemployed or underemployed from view when the only thing you look at is the monitor and TV.
Let's wait till Chrismas comes and consumerist Amerikka don't have nothing with which to consume, and we'll get the crazies rolling out for sure.
At the same time, those with the real permanent entitlements, e.g. THE BANKS, SPECULATORS and other non-working yet millionaire crapulas, laugh at you serfs who have way too many toys and guns but way too little brain.
Tyler definitely has a bent that anyone receiving a benefit is morally inferior.
I'd rather have 'welfare queens' than millions desperate people with nothing to lose, looking for their next meal.
'Are there no jails?; are there no workhouses?'
That's funny; I'd rather have Americans who actually take care of themselves and their families.
Do you favor Labor notes exchanged for work at times like this?
I'd rather live in a country where that's still possible.
Desperation is the mother of invention. At least that's what the old saying should be.
Hmm... let me guess... ZeroHedge here isn't presently hosting any desparate folks at his/her house!

My plan? It would go something like this:
Immediate relief:
1. Get honest about the amount of unemployed people and also the people who are losing their homes.
2. Build public housing in proportion to the numbers in 1. Multiply the answer by 2. Then build that housing in proportion to the numbers as they are geographically.
3. Let people move in and means test them every 3 months to see if they have enough income to afford the average monthly rent for an apartment in their geographic area. If they can afford it, they get bounced. If not, they stay.
4. Create volunteer programs, and give education vouchers of 10,000 for 500 hours of community service, awardable up to 4 times.
5. Put the money back Democrats robbed from food stamps.
Secondary:
5. Take the money back allocated for high speed rail. Take the railways as iminent domain and build the fucking things. No more governor 'derailments'.
6. Create a compounded tax of 15% on all imported finish goods across the board for the next 5 years.
7. End both wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Cut the military budget by 2/3rds. End the war on drugs. Tax marijuana.
8. Change the tax code. Create more brackets for personal income tax. Change the corporate tax code to reflect the real percentage of employees in the united states and how high the employee salary average is. More US based employees earning higher wages: better tax rates.
How's that?

#5 -- (*SNORT*) (*ROLLING MY EYES*) Your mommy and daddy never opened a passport savings account for you when you were little, did they?
5b -- See 4b.
# 5 Secondary -- Umm... setting aside the whole eminent domain issue... exactly WHO is going to build the railroads...???

How is it that most solutions to Govt-caused crises involve adding more Govt? Check your premises.
Thank you...I thought I was going insane...LOL.
So your belief is that more government is always bad? I guess that would also mean any government is bad then?
Well there goes the jobs recovery as Pelosi has often stated that the biggest jobs creator is unemployment benefits. I do feel bad for the folks that are out of luck on this deal. I don't know call me an old softy but maybe they could've been extended through the first of the year. They've gone on this long is a another couple of months going to really kill anyone. Change the policy after the holidays. I'm sure there are plenty of well intentioned folks that could use the benefits and they are not all undeserving miscreants. I don't know about the rest of you but I'm ready for this year to be over with.
"I don't know about the rest of you but I'm ready for this year to be over with."

Then in January, pleeze extend it one more time for the sheeple that vote for me -- I "Promise" this will be the last time (again!)

I shall become a homeless ex-pat before returning to work for corporate america. Flipping burgers at McShits is for slaves. My money, knowledge, expertise, and taxes are leaving the country. The plutarchy can keep their unemployment check.
a lot of people are thinking like you. In the last month I have talked to staff in our office and clients who have decided to go back to their home countries out of fear of and very little hope for this place. This trend will continue to grow. And your right about these "jobs." They might keep you fed, but barely and those prices are going up.
I am leaving too.
And you know what...? There's NOTHING WRONG with that!
More power to ya if you can flee and prosper! More power to you if you have the skill set and the guts!
Me? I don't. I think about it... but I can't seriously see myself - or my wife - taking the leap of faith.
(And, yeah... I consider that a weakness within myself.)
I'll tell ya, though... our kids... if they're smart... they'll definitely move to Texas or another solid, growing, sane "red" state, and better yet... they'll look for overseas employment as a resume builder and as a foot in the door should they ever come to the conclusion that the time has come for them to raise their children elsewhere but the declining U.S.A.

You do realize the "red states" are funded by the "blue states," right? That's not an opinion; it's a fact. The "red states" take in way more federal revenue than they they pay.

When I was a kid I always heard that Democrats were for the poor people which made me think that I wanted to be a Republican. Wouldn't it behoove Democrats to keep people poor to keep a solid voting base? As I got older I realized both sides were absolutely useless and full of it. If you could bring the best parts of both parties and leave out the garbage we might be able to have a decent form of government.
would that be 'shotgun gay weddings'?
I would never force gay's or straights to get married even if they were knocked up.
Without the garbage, there's very little left!

own hands the education of children, establishing in like manner schools throughout the Union; they may assume the provision of the poor; they may undertake the regulation of all roads other than post-roads; in short, every thing, from the highest object of state legislation down to the most minute object of police, would be thrown under the power of Congress... Cost of bankster bailouts $700 billion and trillions in backstops with zirp, etc. Cost of two unfunded wars one trillion and rising. Cost of unfunded Bush tax cuts are one billion and rising. Cost for extended unemployment benefits for over 15 million people about $250 billion over three years. Bailout of AIG $180 billion or more. Compensation to pariah banksters in 2010 alone $144 billion.
Shadowstats has the underemployment rate at 23%
Only about 2/3 of all those that are laid off receive unemployment benefits: http://www.epi.org/economic_snapshots/entry/snapshot_20100520/
One online job opening for each 8 unemployed/underemployed and the data don't separate full-time from part-time job openings. The "get a job at McDonalds" screed is foolish. 15 million out of work and McDonalds only has 320,000 employees in the US, so if they all quit, you could send 325,000 of the 14.8 million unemployed there to work.
Many of the long-term unemployed have had their credit shot trying to get by, so they find out that 666 is the minimum credit score many companies use to weed out applicants. If you are long-term unemployed and over 50, you are unlikely to find a job.
While perpetually extending benefits is not the answer, where are the jobs going to come from to hire 14.8 million unemployed and another 10 million part-timers that want full-time work? Eliminating extended unemployment won't solve the crisis, but it will keep many families out of the street.
24 million unemployed/underemployed and an average of 2.6 in each American household. That's 62.4 million people directly affected by unemployment/underemployment.
Millions of good paying manufacturing jobs have been outsourced: http://www.prospect.org/cs/articles?article=the_plight_of_american_manufacturing
For American manufacturers, the bad years didn't begin with the banking crisis of 2008. Indeed, the U.S. manufacturing sector never emerged from the 2001 recession, which coincided with China's entry into the World Trade Organization. Since 2001, the country has lost 42,400 factories, including 36 percent of factories that employ more than 1,000 workers (which declined from 1,479 to 947), and 38 percent of factories that employ between 500 and 999 employees (from 3,198 to 1,972). An additional 90,000 manufacturing companies are now at risk of going out of business.
Does extending unemployment benefits lead to abuse? For a small percentage of unemployed it does, but the following fed study shows it's not as widespread as many seem to believe.
Although economists have shown that extended availability of UI benefits will increase unemployment duration, the effect in the latest downturn appears quite small compared with other determinants of the unemployment rate. Our analyses suggest that extended UI benefits account for about 0.4 percentage point of the nearly 6 percentage point increase in the national unemployment rate over the past few years. It is not surprising that the disincentive effects of UI would loom small in the midst of the most severe labor market downturn since the Great Depression.

Throw in a little age discrimination: http://michiganmessenger.com/38874/too-young-not-to-work-but-too-old-to-work
The unemployment rate for over-55s is at the highest level since 1948. Since the recession started, both the number of older people seeking work and the rate of unemployment for over-55s have increased more sharply than for all other demographic groups. And older workers comprise a high share of the long-term unemployed. In May, the average duration of unemployment for older job-seekers climbed to 44.2 weeks, 11 more weeks than the national average. Nearly six in ten older job-seekers have been out of work for more than six months.
I've had conversations with temp agencies who imply that they won't hire the long-term unemployed, or in some cases, anyone who is unemployed. And a touch of "unemployed need not apply"
Some job postings include restrictions such as "unemployed candidates will not be considered" or "must be currently employed." Those explicit limitations have occasionally been removed from listings when an employer or recruiter is questioned by the media though.
That's what happened with numerous listings for grocery store managers throughout the Southeast posted by a South Carolina recruiter, Latro Consulting.
http://money.cnn.com/2010/06/16/news/economy/unemployed_need_not_apply/index.htm
The unemployment system is broken and blaming all unemployed for being unemployed isn't going to fix anything.
Wow, well done.
From one day to the next it's just one bailout to the next. Just one endless game of kick the can. Extend and pretend, this will be the 4th extension and don't forget the last extension gave retro payments to people who had fallen off the roles previously. Just imagine if they had taken all these BILLIONS of dollars and actually created some jobs with it? And no i'm not talking road construction jobs, I'm talking small business tax cuts and .25% loans to Main St. just like the big banks get. What people are missing here is there is no end in sight. They have not dealt with the real issue they have only made it worse. I agree people need support when they are down but not creating an enviornment for them to succeed in is far worse. We all knew this would end this way? How could it not when you have a government living off a credit card to put money on these people's credit card. In the end you have a bankrupt Government and a bankrupt population. This is where we are and it will only get worse as inflation kicks in. The 13.5 TRILLION dollars went to the hands of Wall St. not Main St., there lies the problem. So they can pass a permenent extension at this point because the money will not ever make its way to the people that need it. I'm sure most of the 99'ers would rather be givin an opportunity then a handout. Unfortunately for them, the Government doesn't see it that way, they would rather them be on life support then be working or starting a new business and possibly doing something creative or innovative. Givin the chance, most of these people would probably help change the path America is on and help make us a more productive society. In fact givin the chance, I feel most Americans would prefer to follow Tyler Durden's 8 Rules Of Innovation. Unfortunately the enviornment they face is stacked against them and making an innovative breakthrough only seems to be a dream.
Tyler Durden’s 8 Rules of Innovationhttp://lateralaction.com/articles/tyler-durden-innovation/
This is a test to see if things are really getting better.
its amazing how pasionnate people are about this...
get over it...this is just a sympthom among many; take your pick from a broken postal system to a more than broken financial system etc...
the issue is not about an extra 12 billion, when we are talking about trillions...
the country is toasted - get it?
...hmmmnn...i wonder if the ones losing on this UE battle will sell their guns or begin using them?...hopefully their aim will be worthy of the bullits and can provide food and nourishment for their starving children...and wasn't the collegiate generation rioting a few moments ago because of increased tuition?.."why, yes, moofph"... well, i again wonder, what is this congress expecting at this point? standing ovations? ...or standing armies of destitute, angry, and educated people with nothing to lose and a lifetime to gain? i would not want to be any public official at this time being paid to serve a disenfranchised american population...btw, winter's coming folks...and there is a storm on the way.
One thing you've got absolutely positively right...
Folks like us better get armed and trained (so as to be dangerous).
The first animal who so much as threatens me or my property...

BILL
My what a fearful little twinkie.
What affect will this have on gold said the guy with the heart of stone.
.
Hm. My most recent installment kinda gets to that one:
http://madscienceunlimited.com/fiction/actsOfCharity.html
I'm becoming disillusioned with these stone-cold types, though. Always need to be on the top. Big swinging dicks. But what else is there? Is there anything else that matters?
Heh. However I'm writing one now where a BSD gets it. Feels good too. But still, nothing so dark as darkness could be. I'm juuuust holding them back ... the destroyer or the firebird ... one of them is going to let the lid go. One of these days, some day soon, that lid is coming off. Bitchez.
Because the average joe, already feeling 100 percent of the brunt of the downturn, deserves this, while the banksters deserve 100 cents on the dollar through bailouts.
These people don't have a jobs not because of laziness, it's because of the destroyed system. It's not their fault all their jobs have been outsourced and what they have been working for relied on cheap credit and negatives savings rate spending by the public.
How many people will die from this? > than 0.
People are FUCKING STUPID when they say we need to balance the budget and get rid of entitlements. Especially when the fed at THE SAME TIME is HYPERINFLATING their monetary account.
Time and time again, the only people hurt, are those that don't deserve to be. But there are always dipshits saying THIS is a good thing. If you think that, you're a fascist dumbass who knows shit from shinola. The world doesn't have to be in a crappy monetary system. But everyone wants to play by 'monetarist' rules. Sad, and stupid. To the extreme. I don't know what's stupider. Sarah Palin, Rand Paul, or a dipshit who supports this cut.
How come the only cuts, are on the PEOPLE? Everytime.
Well when your private business goes under, or you get sick...because under depressed conditions is when plagues happen, then maybe you'll change your tune.
It's funny, everybody warned NerObama about Haiti, and cholera, and now we have people in Florida with it. Obama acts like the repbulican ideal, and America has people with Cholera.
Anyone that thinks ALL the munis will get bailouts is nuts. Only SOME will get it. The rest will be told to DIE.
So for all the people telling those people on these benefits TO DIE, which is what you are (in REALITY) doing by cheering it's demise, you will reap what you sow. It will come and bite you. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but at some point a bankster or anyone else with a fistful of dollars and gold bars still won't be able to turn the factories back on to produce the things they used to take for granted, like Air conditioning, or sterile environments, etc.
4-5 million people thrown in the gutter. Only a fascist unamerican idiot would cheer that. So congrats, you know what side YOU'RE REALLY ON.
If you don't think so, you're fooling yourself as much as Bernanke, Palin, Paul, NerObama. Quit believing the sophistry. Quit believing the bs. It's so funny how after all these years, and after balking at being told propaganda NOW, they STILL hold onto the propaganda THESE SAME PEOPLE told them years earlier. Amazing.
So it's just the banksters are wrong NOW, not then too? You realize that right? That you're still upholding their earlier bs, while being against them on other areas now. It's just amazing. I don't trust their cars, but I'll trust their airplanes. Literally that's what these dipshits are doing.
Save the people, so they may make a market.
The banks sure won't do either. But then again, so many people still believe in supply side, trickle down, tax cut, free market, no/low regulation environments. THESE ARE ALL BULLSHIT.
These people are just apologists for the banksters.
Do these people even know the constitution? NO
They never heard of 'general welfare'. WHich means when a bunch of psychophants crash the economy through market bullshit, then yes, the gov't has the OBLIGATION to help meagerly provide for them.
300 million people on unemployment benefits for A LIFETIME, DOES NOT EQUAL ONE Ben Bernanke for a single term. Sorry it's still not 1/1000th the damage.
So many people cry that welfare and entitlements are what will crush us. You're fucking nuts. It's everything else that is crushing the people and the safety nets we have. It's the system forcing problems in states budgets, people's budgets, federal budgets, social security, medicare, food stamps, unemployment benefits, etc, etc, etc.
These programs aren't all having problems because of what they are. They are having problems because of who and what ideologies have been doing their best impression of Joseph Hazelwood. The rammifications of free markets, of tax cuts, of two bogus wars, of stealing everything not nailed down (and stuff that is), of lax regulation, of everything a 2007 republican held belief like scripture, caused the mess. I guess it makes them feel better to blame the unemployed as lazy (WRONG), than at their own ideologies as bankrupt, immoral, and just plain DUMB TO BEGIN WITH. Anybody with a brain saw these ideologies as ASININE from the get-go.
Even now, during the collapse, so many people still can't believe their flawed ideology under a flawed monetary system as a concept was the cause, and still point fingers to entitlements, and lazy unemployed people as the cause.
One thing is also a certain, you CANNOT call yourself a christian and be FOR the failure of passage of unemployment benefits. You can't even call yourself HUMAN. You call yourself, rightfully, and astutely exactly what you are....FASCISTS.
But I'm not covering new ground here, this is all well known to anyone with a brain.
Read the fed minutes about support for bailouts on one hand, then again 'end of unemployment mandate' and 'end of unemployment benefit extensions' on the other. See the two different paths? See which one is needed and which one isn't? See how they got things all ass backwards again?
Not one person in prison for this crime, and only the average joe has paid anything so far for this crisis.
Let's cheer like the banksters for no unemployment benefits. Let's cheer for cuts to actual people, for tangible cheap things that keep them alive.
So the banksters still print, and the dumbasses feel happy because the poor got cut. Whew, now the banksters have some political cover to print more, because the dumbasses feel better about the average joe being made to suffer.
Fuck the fascists. Whether it be the QoE, Ben Bernanke, Sarah Palin, Rand Paul, Barack NerObama, or any blowhard who thinks entitlements and unemployment are bad.
These people have to get a fucking clue. Their whole viewpoint revolves around monetarism. That's why they're fucking clueless. The picture frame of life is a lot bigger than monetarism and it's silly misconceptions like unemployment benefits and entitlements will destroy us. No, it's how you operate that will destroy us not the benefits.
Finally once again I'll let the dumbasses have a chance to get this through their numb skulls. People who hold balanced budgets over everything else, have unbalanced minds.
Thus people against the lifesaving nature of unemployment benefits, have unbalanced minds, unbalanced bullshit viewpoints, and have in essence been made crazy.
Enjoy. I know 4-5 million people won't be, just for starters.
Get a job, ya bum!
....Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat
Please to put a penny in the old man's hat
If you haven't got a penny, a half-penny will do
If you haven't got a half-penny then FUCK YOU and give Goldman Sachs their bonus you deadbeat (since they claim they are doing God's work, then surely their rights to a bonus trumps any rights you have as a human being....after all we all KNOW how they "earned" it) HA HA HA...
That seems about right these days, doesn't it????
See you in the FEMA camps....save me a top bunk, please.....
"A riot is an ugly ting, and I say: 'It's about time we had one!'" -- Magistrate in "Young Frankenstein"
The system (TPTB) isn't gonna change, until the rioting is over and you should KNOW that!
We have been brought up by the Progressives (liberals) that without stealing from our neighbor, there is no way to help the poor and those that need help. That is the biggest lie every put out there...and most of the American people have fallen for it.
Progressive/Socialists and their ideals have repeatedly ignored Moral Hazard (and morals in general) for decades, why now, are you surprised that there is NO morality to be found anywhere?
You have the right to protect your own life, liberty, and justly acquired property from the forceful aggression of others. So you may rightfully ask others to help protect you. But you do NOT have a right to initiate force against the life, liberty, or property of others. Thus, you have NO right to designate some person to initiate force against others on your behalf.
You cannot give Govt. Officials any rights that you do not have yourself!
"Bank fraud and unconstitutional abuse of private federal reserve notes didn't cause this.
Obviously, if it did, we'd be going after the correct party and making them pay their victims.
Since bank profits are at historic highs and the economically whipsnapped are the poorest, the banks did nothing wrong."

BILL
Make sure to work the shaft too.
This is going to be a difficult winter I fear.
If the Government does not have compassion for the 99'ers going into the Holiday and Wintertime, I don't know what to tell you.
We are doing a little extra shopping at the grocery store to donate straight to church who are experiencing a inflow of 99'ers who have finally ran out and are hungry. I think three new families showed up asking for refuge and food this week.
It's not much but it's a little bit that we can do even though times are very challenging for us. I hated parting with the small amount of dollars for the food for we can use it, but frankly if the children dont eat on those families and I knew about it then it will be on me if I did not contribute a little.
Basically we stopped tithing cash and only using that tithes for food to ensure at least someone will eat this weekend. Imagine what can happen if entire groups of churches starting tithing food instead of cash.
We can only help each other. The government won't be there. There is no shame. There is only holding together. Hoping for the sun.
God bless you.
(Now's HERE'S someone talking sense; walking the walk as well!)
Giving is GOOD! But you need to know who you're giving to...!
BILL
And make sure they worship as you do before you do anything even remotely Christian on their behalf, right?
Hell awaits you.
Before there was even a thought towards Christain or Hell, Pioneers and Pilgrims were fed, have given food and managed to learn how to grow food.
That is why we are having Thanksgiving this month, a colony in Plymouth near Boston learned to raise crops from the local natives or else they would have starved. That is the Thanksgiving story.
I hear many grumblings in the area and people are coming out of the woodwork everywhere to make sure whoever is hungry and has no job or money, they will recieve a little something and rest easy for a while.
The best thing for you to consider is freely giving what you are able without hurting your household or bills. There might be a time in the future you may have a need and then your neighbors may remember what you have done for them.
Otherwise what good is it for America? A bunch of tight fisted Scrooges enconsced in thier houses far away from the masses at the gates waving bowls and torches and asking for food.
Worshipping matters not when someone you know is hungry as long you share a plate with them. That alone is enough.
Keep in mind that our Society is held by a thread. If something bad happens to America, first the Gas, then the food runs out. Once that is gone after a time, other problems begin to crop up.
We grew a garden this year. We had some crops that are so bountiful that we cannot possibly eat it all before it spoils. So we mason jar a bunch for next year and give the rest away so that others may enjoy something.
Next year's garden is going to be bigger with some luck and rain.
First, your elementary school narrative about the Plymouth Plantation is quaint, but it leaves out some important details.
Second, I think we're in agreement on the benefits of charity, it's the strings attached to same by many I was trying to call out (the charities I give to don't require membership in a church). I give about 6% of my income on average to secular charities whom I've vetted to actually convey my donations to people in need (instead of say Elizabeth Dole's hairstylist). I also believe that volunteering yourself is more important than writing checks.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yjs_7rdhImA
I agree with you, I completely forgot the Volunteering part being wrapped up in the elementry school story.
Money is good but when you put in your own time, that is priceless.
You're a very good person. I admire your charity.
Republicans don’t want to extend the un-employment benefits for working Americans that are out of work.
The Republican Party did sign off on $700 billion dollars for TARP for the Banks, along with the 0% FED Window used to pay back those funds… as well as QE1 and now QE2…
$700 Billion Dollars for TARP for the Banks?
20% un-employment costs the United States of America $2 Billion a month in benefits coverage.
$700 billion dollars to the Banks equals 350 Months of unemployment coverage for un-employed Americans or ruffly 29 years of coverage.
The Republicans don’t want to help un-employed Americans but LOVE! Helping the Banks and Wall Street FUCK! Main Street un-employed America.
Make no mistake, Obama is Bush part Duex… so there is no difference between the parties really, only what 5th Ave. sells the sheep as differences… the lobby owns all of the whores within the beltway.
The States are already borrowing from Uncle Sam to pay unemployment. Does this new money mean that the States will be made whole again?
If not, this will only accelerate and deepen the debt load on the Government and those of every State.
It is useful to note that if the people go hungry it is the cities that burn, not Washington DC. So there is some indirect incentive for the Feds to offload the problem to the States, who will then have to field police and militia with their own budget nickel to fend off the hungry mobs. The States want to go back to the Feds saying "WFT, why are we giving you Fed taxes again? So you can pay WS bonus?" and the revolt is on.
The risk here is that the Fed Gov becomes useless in a general breakdown into individual states and groups of states cutting off in order to keep the lid on their internal populations.
That's when the South finally secedes from the Union, and nobody will notice nor care.
Yo... IDIOT... if you really believe "Republicans Bad, Democrats Good," then I'm surprised you were able to answer the math question correctly so as to activate posting privileges here.
The Republican Party that "signed off" on TARP was at the time the MINORITY Party in both the House and the Senate.
Bush...?!?! That f--king idiot...?!?! A RINO - not a conservative in the sense that I or the vast majority of my free market loving fellow ZeroHedgers are.
Was it "only" the RINOs who went along with that FRIGG'N IDIOT Bush...? Nope. That said, folks like me are consistent.
Heck... folks like me were the ones who threw the RINOs out of power by refusing to support them in 2006.
Seriously... stop making a damned fool of yourself; either that or go on over to HuffPost or the NYT and mingle with "your own kind."
BILL
So this site is for conservative republicans only? Given that this site is most likely run from NYC, at least that's the impression I get, I would think the people who operate it has=ve or are sympathetic to some fairly liberal views on social matters.
Nope, if I had to hazard a guess, TD is a hardcore libertarian.

Bill, where you speaking to me? I cant tell? but as far as republicans go or democrates... http://www.opensecrets.org/ both are bought and paid for whores... there is exactly no difference between the two... except what 5th Ave. packages up for the ignorant to slurp up in the form of some faux koolaide...
As for you telling someone to go over to huffington post... to mingle with someone... Bill, the fact that you would defend either party here means that you are the one who is lost...
Just pointing out the obvious. So maybe you should get back to whats important... painting up anti-abortion signs and let the grown ups continue talking about how to fix a $700 Trillion dollar securities market... give or take a few hundred Trillion...
Sincerely, JW
