The "Karate Kid" Market

RobotTrader's picture

The 3-min. bar traders are now getting roundhouse kicked daily by the gyrations in the Euro, periodic utterances from various Fed Heads, and Mr. Blankfein's ability to vaporize both puts and calls by reversing course with various "Risk On" or "Risk Off" chants.

Thanks to Ags Nightmare for this particular idea.  Everyone is dazed and confused as to whether or not we are deflating or inflating, and Goldman's Prop Desk is minesweeping again attempting to blow out all options positions prior to expiration.

Yesterday, it was "Risk On" and everyone was charging into commodity plays:

Today, the dollar soared and the Euro tanked, so the Prop Desks reversed course and put on "Risk Off" trades, selling foreign currencies and piling into the U.S. Nightcrawler:

Then there were some "Hell Squeezes" today in Whole Foods, and La-Z-Boy furniture....

Obviously, Goldman was taking aim at some of its clients which had outsized short positions in retail stocks....

And after hours, we have Priceline going crazy, up $18 on earnings..

And NVDA imploding after it was gunning all day on the back of a SNDK upgrade...

All classic Options Expiration moves, move along, nothing has changed.

The poor Euro is getting no love tonight....

But investors are clamoring for more U.S. Dollars, as Fed officials continue to promise an end to "Quant Sleaze"...

Some thoughts on the Inflation vs. Deflation debate and Investment planning 101:

So...inflation or deflation...how about both?  Inflate things that have value (gold and silver and food) and deflate stupid kids stuff (video games and candy and Brittney Spears).  Honestly, fat people should sell their excess lard now, while there is still a market with botox.  Then the liposucted 'Mericans should purchase gold.  Thats what I would do, if I was obiese.  Now that II think about it, why did I not do this?  Oh yeah, cuz I know what McMasons does to the body...MSG, GMOs, chlorine/fluoride and HFCS, mmmm.  Come on 'Merica!  Come ON!!!!!!!!!!!!  WAKE UP!!!  No one wants your currency, because you are fat, lazy and stupid!  If you have any greenbacks, buy gold now.  Pull your 401k.  Buy gold now.

Reminds me, got to talk to some big guys in the estate planning biz. They all see inflation in the pipe and are advising their clients accordingly. So they see it right or wrong.

Whole Foods wholly bypassed the "Great Recession"
Rasputin - Wed, Feb 17, 2010 - 08:48 AM

Well, it seems the Land-Rover-driving, soy-milk-swilling,
twenty-fiatscos-per-pound-salmon-scarfing DINKS and yuppies didn't get
the memo that the "Great Recession" is gonna scroom us all.

Because these tofu-eaters just helped Whole Foods' stock price reach a new fifty-two week high, with a gain of:

OVER THREE HUNDRED PERCENT
...in the last year. (Ras note): that's more than gold and silver have gone up in the last SEVEN years.

Heh, and to think that over the previous two years every single
Wall Street gambler, the GSEs, pension fund, insurer and bank failed
outright, yet the "real world" has hardly even hiccupped.

It's amazing what twenty trillion fiatscos flung by governments
and central banks can do in terms of overcoming "convulsions, isn't it?

Problem solved. Party resumes. Bears and GHS/SHS types left crying in their organic carrot juice.

Oh, screw Whole Foods.  Seriously.  Is there anything to that company other than that it's a supermarket for hippies?

Are there really that many hippies in the world, and do they really spend enough money at WFMI to justify a PE of 40.62?

I can't wait to short the living crap out of this company.

At least Whole Foods sells produce\meat from local and state farmers (and proudly advertises it in the stores) and the money goes to an American owned company.

Would you really rather buy foreign goods at the local megamart instead?

I dont disagree about the stock. If you buy enough puts you can afford the $25/lb aged steaks they got.

Agreed the PE is out of line, but I have to say that during my occasional visits to the US, Whole Foods has more shoppers than a Virginia gun show...and the shoppers are far more dangerous.  I would rather try to navigate the Bangna Trat highway in Bangkok during rush hour in the rainy season, driving a subcompact rental, when every truck driver from Bangkok to Pattaya is pumped on yaa baa, than try to maneuver a cart through Whole Foods on a Saturday afternoon.  For the former I can at least get insurance.  Whole Foods shoppers might well be ex-hippies, but the LOVE is definitely gone, though the thrill is not.  Warning:  do not attempt to take the last pack of basil unless you've set a line of Claymores on your flank!

I enjoy your travel references.

If a Whole Foods were to open in Bangkok, I wonder if they would use a cane to maintain order.

In Saudi Arabia they'd use a cane.  The Mutawwa, or the Committee for the Preservation of Virtue and the Elimination of Vice (I am not making this up), are a bunch of long-bearded senior citizens whose only remaining reason to walk this Earth is to smack the exposed wrists and ankles of the female "tarts" who dare to expose a postage stamp's area worth of real natural fiber.
