LA Times Reports BP Has Succeeded In Blocking Oil Leak
Thad Allen, who is coordinating the government response, says the well still has low pressure, but cement will be used to cap the well permanently as soon as the pressure hits zero.
The "top kill" effort, launched Wednesday afternoon by industry and government engineers, has pumped enough drilling fluid to block all oil and gas from the well, Allen said. The pressure from the well is very low, but persists, he said.
Once engineers have reduced the well pressure to zero, they will begin to pump cement into the hole to entomb the well. To help that effort, he said, engineers are also pumping some debris into the blowout preventer at the top of the well.
Allen said one ship that was pumping fluid into the well has run out of the fluid, or "mud," and that a second ship is on the way. He said he was encouraged by the progress.
"We'll get this under control," he said.
Allen also said that later today, an interagency team will release a revised estimate of how much oil was flowing from the well into the Gulf before the "top kill" effort began. The Coast Guard has estimated the flow at 5,000 barrels a day, but independent estimates suggest that it was much higher ? perhaps tens of thousands of barrels a day.

If true, this is great news. Unfortunately, the damage has been done and BP better get the cleanup effort in high gear. Add to the list of unanwered questions: "Why didn't BP try to top kill the leak a month ago?"
It ain't plugged. It will be though ... eventually.
Wanna see for yourself:

Thanks for posting the video link. I see that it is still gushing. I also read that BP ran out of mud. What. The. F***. Why is there not 5 ships of mud waiting. How do they run out of mud on one of the most crucial workover operations ever? BP's actions have been criminally negligent.
It's 200,000 psi. This is a retarded monkey screwing a football show.
Your goal is to have the pressure of the mud column at depth be greater that the pressure of the oil/gas in the formation trying to escape. When that happens your mud penetrates the formation. That formation can swallow a fuck-ton of fluid as it has spit out a fuck-ton of fluid. But yes, they should of had more ships available.
Thank God.
and BP CEO issues sincere apology and immediately files to sell all his vested stock on price spike.
This would certainly be great news...but wow if it doesn't actually work Thad gonna need a new job.
thank god . . . finally
Across the wires just now: BP spokeman says can't confirm LA Times report.
Premature ejaculation?
Still seems pretty leaky to me, but I'm not an expert. You be the judge:

Doublepost, remove this please.
But....
If Allen's assertion is correct, the "top kill" effort will have stopped an oil leak that went on for five weeks and spewed millions of gallons of oil into fragile gulf waters. BP, which was responsible for the leaking drillbore, also pumped an unknown volume of chemicals into the ocean to disperse the spill.
Ecological damage, and the total volume of spilled oil, remains unknown.

agreed
First he fixes the economy and the mess that Bush left and now through his leadership the Gulf Oil spill has been contained.
Make no mistake, by the time the revisionists get through with this it will be deemed a victory for Obama. His press conference today followed by a visit to the region tomorrow could not have been better scripted.
But the question remains why the hell did they not try Top Kill three weeks ago, this technique has been used in deep water situations in the past with great success.
" Make no mistake, by the time the revisionists get through with this it will be deemed a victory for Obama."
no way......yomama is toast......this disaster is all his.....the man was given an absolutely historic opportunity to produce real, lasting change, and big city machine politician that he is, he responed with a monumental, epic fail.................
Nothing's done until it's done. I truly want them to be successful with this effort. Watching the video, it looks slightly premature to use the word succeeded. But as long as the camera stays real, and not a loop created shot on some movie set, we should find out by the weekend.
This is an ecological catastrophe, but it is a technical problem that can and will be solved. Let the inspections begin. Let this be the offshore oil business' Brown's Ferry. Engineers know how to fix / prevent this, it's the goddamned greedy executives and their allied bean counters who fuck us every time.
Oh, what a surprise they are "revising" (i.e. admitting the lie) AFTER the volcano was stopped.
Just what we'd expect from the USCG which was subordinate, including its descretion in the use of force against CBS reporters, to BP.
The USCG leaders were probably looking at the same porno sites as the SEC and MMS.
Possibility of disinformation leaked (no pun intended) to long BP and then wait for the right moment and short just before the real news hits?
Just like in the film Trading Places?
Stock is up now...wait till the lawsuits and federal investigations hit.
That ongoing buying support I detected has morphed into a rally...
