Libya: Government Bombs Civilians, Top Sunni Cleric Puts Out a Death Warrant on Gadhafi, Son Warns of Foreign Occupation, Native Tribes Revolt

The news out of Libya is dramatic.
Dictator Moammar Gadhafi is bombing his own people with military jets.
Two senior officers in the Libyan air force have defected to Malta:
A top Sunni cleric says the army should kill Gadhafi.
Gadhafi’s son is warning: “Stop the protest or face civil war & colonialism”. He states that the U.S. and Europe will occupy Libya if the protests are not reined in.
Libya's own diplomat accuses Gadhafi of 'crimes against humanity' and 'crimes of war'. Military officials are reportedly calling for Gadhafi's removal. And diplomats and the justice minister have resigned. See this.
And Al Jazaeera reports:
Unconfirmed reports suggest the Migraha tribe has now abandoned Gaddafi. This follows the Tuareg and Warfela tribes who came out in support of the protests yesterday.

I think the Libyan situation is a consequence of a primitive administration exposed to a high oil price rather then just inflation of food and other basics which is a given.
These juntas or tribally based politics only operate optimally with low revenue streams - once they are exposed to dramatic surpluses the guys on the inside accumulate massive wealth as that is what they have always done - but the difference in wealth becomes exaggerated to the point of absurdity and therefore you get a poltical / violent reaction from the have nots or the people not on the inside.

Yea what I noticed about Libya's oil figures is the very high oil export ratio to internal consumption.
They may have been a deal done with western countries regarding retarding economic growth withen these countries to increase net exports.
A more honest policey from the west if they wanted higher exports would be investments in power stations which in these surplus countries tend to use oil to power electricity when the west has wound up these stations after the oil shocks of the 70s.
We appear to be suffering from blowback effects via short term policey decisions.

If it can be confirmed that Gaddafi is bombing the protesters, should the US or anyone else intervene? We've got aircraft carriers in the area and destroying an conventional air force is the kind of thing the US military is good at (as opposed to occupying a country). So it seems like we could do it. I tend to be isolationist, but a quick couple of days of air strikes from offshore to stop the bombing of civilian populations seems like a small thing. It must be a terrible idea since I've yet to see anybody even suggest it, but I personally don't know why.

Actually, when they are well armed they have no plan or purpose or especially motivation at the indviudual soldier level in directing such arms effectively. Google "arab war west" or "arab israel wars". In short, it sucks to be arab in a war with the west.
Had an Egyptian officer in my Ranger class. He was beyond simply astute as are many of his fellows. It is folly to underestimate and armed person, friend or foe, regardless of past performance.

Therein lies the rub.
Do I like the fact that we show favoritism instead of neutrality through what is essentially bribery which artificially props up foreign economies thus keeping the bloodshed for those people there to a minimus over a given time period?
I have not worked that issue out yet for myself.
Viscerally I don't like it because it is done with my tax dollars (or used to be anyways, now we just print). On a humanitarian level I suppose one could make the case, and apparently has, that it allows time for freedom and the concept of self determination to incubate and grow without the influence (suffocation really) of any other system.
